Top Xangans
Someone wrote me and asked if anyone on Xanga had ever done a “Top Xangans” contest before, showing the best writers or the “hottest” Xangans or whatever.
I’ve seen a bunch over the years, but none of them are coming to mind now. Anyone remember any contests like these, or have any links to them lying around?

I wrote an entry on my favourite xangans and suggested this a featured question a while ago. It would be nice to have a top xanga contest (you at xanga can organise it).

It would be too difficult since there are so many types of blog–what do you think?
I wouldn’t win it, either–most of my posts are, as I’ve said, hemorrhoid-inducing.

i remember a Mr & Mrs Xanga contest…
I’ve never heard of such a thing.
Maybe that’s an idea. Make it like vf and give everyone the ability to rate each other, from 1 to 10 (10 being hottest). It’d just be another fun little thing to do here on Xanga.
TheTheologiansCafe has had contests like that in the past. I can’t remember all the categories, though.
I think its rude and it sets ones above others…
I would not want to be in the middle of “Best” anything.

Whonose used to have a Mr and Mrs Xanga. But he didn’t do one last year.
I know Mr Xanga 2006 was Ibizajb.

isn’t that the point of featured/stars? I mean, shouldn’t these “contests” just sort of happen automatically because of those features?

Yup. There were a few going on – the problem with them is that they are usually within cliques to some degree: only so many people knew about them. And then the more popular blogs won because they’d ask their readers to vote for them….and since they had more readers….
Nonetheless, I won “best commentor” or something like that…because I used to comment ALL the time on all blogs/comments. Unfortunately, I just don’t have the time or energy to do that now.
No idea, I think there’s many good bloggers.
Didn’t read all the comments so you may already know, but Dan, the theologian’s cafe had a few a while back. But damned if I’m digging through that stack to find ‘em. He’d know. He did a few and had categories of all sorts. I don’t know about now, but then the corner on nook. I don’t know how inclusive it was but back then with the old front page he had multiple top 50 entries running simultaneously. Must have had some decent sized cross section. I mean I even met a Brit friend by reading comments on that page. He was/is an atheist with a huge heart and a bigger brain for logic. Gotta love it on that page eh? Anyway, it was likely more than a year ago.

I do not remember any contest like this on Xanga. I doubt I would win if it was bought back.

the rational side of me shudders from the thought of it, but the bikini-wearing-side-of-me is titillated by the idea.
of course, if such a pageant were to bare light there would be a bikini segment, right?

there’ve been a ton of contests over the years i’ve been here. usually resulting in people getting ticked off over something or other as i recall. i stay as far away from them as possible. truly. they’re not pretty at all.
would be ok to do one, if someone who did the judging realized that there are a lot of us who are actually older than 18.

Didn’t Xanga used to have something like this? Top Xangans? I do remember too one time, a long time ago, where Xanga was considering a list of the top 50 most blocked users.
But you’re tipping the server, busser, and bartender really. 1% of our tips go to the busser, and 1.5% go to the bartender. You are tipping on how good the server is to you, and how hard he/she has worked to make your night. Lowering our tip for a mistake we didn’t make is wrong. It is beyond our control and is something you should take up with the manager or head chef. We get punished for something beyond our control.
also, the kitchen gets paid an hourly rate, so them messing up doesn’t hurt their income (unless the circumstances get them fired). You are our source of income. If the kitchen messes up, our income suffers, because people refuse to acknowledge the fact that we are not the ones at fault. Our life and income, our ability to pay rent, to get by, depends on how much you, the clientèle, tip us. It’s unfair to lose some of our income for a kitchen’s mistake.
The theologian used to do those types of polls. Like everything else they got gamed. I don’t think that an be avoided. Ok I gamed one of his myself. Anyway he can help you with that

I think “top Xangan” contests are for attention whores.
I do not remember seeing any contest at the time on Xanga on people sites. I never understood Xanga when I first started blogging.
I would not wantto take part in any contest as I do not want to be seen as attention whore/seeker.
nah, it wasn’t like that.. it was just a link to a place on xanga where you could see how you were ranked amongst xanga’s top users. i’m not sure what it was based on. i’ll see if i can find a screen shot. i sat at #13 on this list at some point, and i wasn’t even sure for what.
Does the fight to be on the front page of Xanga (due to the largest number of eprops) way back when count? In this post, I refer to “the Hot Site list”, and in this one, I refer to “Top eProps”. Posts from Jan 2001. No screenshots of the old Xanga frontpage, though.
There was a Most Engaging Xanga that TheTheologiansCafe sponsored last March. I remember it because I won. The last day for voting was on April 1, 2007, but the link for the voting doesn’t work anymore. I don’t remember all the people in it, but I know JuliePersons and Randy777 were two others. I believe there was someone with redtomato in the name. Um…there were about 12 people. Maybe Dan remembers?
Also, he had a contest for video categories right after that.
Oh, and Dan and friends picked the entrants based on their own opinions, I believe.
I remember like… a list of the most visited Xangas… that was back in 2005, so naturally, all the layout sites were at the top.

There have been many, many contests–some with more participation than others.
I searched my past posts and found…
I won my share in ‘my time’ (heh): “Emperor of Xanga” contest, “Most Provacative Blog of the Year” (2001? 2002?…don’t remember!) contest, “Who’s the ‘Real’ Bianca Broussard, Spamstress of Xanga?” contest. And maybe even some I wasn’t even aware of.
