Fire Island
Someone suggested I check out Fire Island, off the coast of Long Island. You can take the LIRR out there, and a one night stay on Saturday wouldn’t be too expensive? At least, I hope not.
Does anyone have advice for a trip out to Fire Island? It’d be awesome if there was a nice bed and breakfast that someone knew about or had stayed at… I know it’s pretty cold out, so it shouldn’t be too busy over there (I hope).
Also, any thoughts/advice on what to do on Fire Island on a cold winter day? I’m hoping to find a place with a fireplace and maybe a hot tub. This could be wishful thinking on my budget. Please advise!

That looks like a great place John. Good luck with the rest of your quest.
it used to be a huge destination for the gay community- i dont know if it still is.
Well, Fire Island is extremely expensive I’ve heard… don’t go without a gourmet recipe to share!
I took Albert to New Hope, PA one year. We stayed at a Bed and Breakfast with a jacuzzi in our room. It wasn’t expensive. We went bike riding, hit some wineries, visited all the cute shops down the strip, painted stuff at a pottery studio, ate at great restaurants and went to an apple festival. You can also take a short scenic trolley train ride through town. It’s less than an hour away. Sounds like it would be perfect for you. Let me know if you want more info.
@sandelion23 - sounds intriguing! is there public transportation to around there? cuz we’z gots no ride.
I don’t know if I’d like to be associated with a place that has a possible etymology of poison ivy rashes…
I need to take a vacation too..
i never knew ny had that thing, long island!
@john - i know buses go from port authority. the room we got had a jacuzzi facing a working fireplace.
camping or birdwatching could be fun.
or boating/fishing.

try that?
ps also check out the “accomodations” section. =)
oh, and if you go through Travelocity or Expedia or something like that, you could find a great deal. shop around. you could save big. i must warn you, though, that it’s surfing season in Fire Island, so the beaches and seaside hotels might be pretty packed.
good luck!
I’m sorry, John, but I just can’t get past the idea of a small island with a live volcano and lava flowing into the water. Sounds scary.
I’m from the West Coast and know nothing about Fire Island, but really, with a name like that, how can you go wrong? They probably have dragons and/or tribes of cannibals there.
fire…
Hmmm..sorry I have never been there.
Fire Island…
Get a bucket of water.
@JonasApproved - heh, long island is where queens and brooklyn are! or at least, they make up part of long island…
funny u mentioned fire island because i met someone at one of my weekly project yesterday who goes there every summer and almost bought a place there. it’s a small isoloated island. she loved it. apparently there’s a strip of the island that’s pretty tourissy with shops and restaurants. forgot the name though. but it’s really small, quaint, and a perfect get away spot. not sure how if it’s winter friendly though. i think there is a ferry (30 mins) that takes u there.
@sandelion23 - hook us up with the name of that b&b, and it sounds perfect!
@john - http://www.1833umplebyhouse.com/accommodations.htm we stayed in the gazebo room. more info on the town here: http://www.newhopepennsylvania.com/

wheres That..Iwant to come hahaha
I was there this past summer. There are part of the island that are insanely gay and then there are parts that aren’t at all.
It’s actually a pretty expensive weekend destination and not meant for the winter at all. I’d suggest looking elsewhere.
the lirr rocks! i wish we had that in san diego…
hehe… bring lots of gay friends!
what about a day trip to montauk? “THE END”
@sandelion23 - new hope is great!
fire island is great. it has to be, it’s were a lot of gay people go!
wait until spring and go camping in the federal wilderness area.
It’s Fire Island. Make it live up to its name. Light the Island on Fire.
I’ve never been out to that area….but I was thinking you should come to Illinois and TALK to my husband about what romance really is! lol
i’ve never heard of fire island! looks very interesting. but sandelion’s suggestion sounds great too.
sound like a deserted island lol, r u going aloen or something? man that would be bored want to get me a ticket hahaha jk jk
I have never heard of Fire Island until today.
Lose the icecream…………………… Opt for string mittens…
that seems fun. :]
Well geez! Fire Island sound alot better than the Bronx or Port Authority… In Port Authority, you’d have a bunch of black guys in fur coats and holding canes coming up to you and saying stuff like “You just got off the bus from Ohio?? Oh fine! I can make you famous, no really. I’ll take you to Starbucks and we can talk about it. You gonna pay for the coffie right?”
LOL, good luck on finding a place, dude.
@sandelion23 -
New Hope is a lot like Laguna Beach in California. I recommend both.
@john -
John
you might just like it there- it’s a sleepy artist colony with lot’s of interesting and funky shops on the main drag. It’s right on the delaware river and you can eat and watch the water roll by at some of the restaurants there and there’s a canal as well. we took the kids there and fed some ducks and shopped for unique old toy’s like those antique banks and corgi cars etc.
Fire Island is not the gay community destination it once was, just like Saugatuck, MI. People outside of the gay community discovered the charm of these communities and they became more blended. One idea is to check the weather sites for the forecast 10 days out and try to plan your trip for a weekend where it might be a little warmer. Now that we are approaching the Vernal Equinox the likelihood of a warmer weekend is increasing.
