  • Weekend Getaway

I need some suggestions for a one day weekend getaway – somewhere relaxing near NYC I can go with my wife.  I’m trying to save money, so I don’t want to spend a ton of cash.

An example: in the past, we’ve taken a bus about an hour and a half upstate to a bed and breakfast called Inn at Lake Joseph.  It’s really nice and relaxing, and there are boats, hiking trails, and indoor ping pong tables.  But we’ve been there twice, and it’s also fairly expensive.

I’d consider a day trip with no night stay, if there’s somewhere fun nearby to relax.  We did some research into hot springs in NY, but couldn’t find any.  I’ve been to the Russian Baths in the city, and they are pretty dodgy (plus I don’t know if they are coed).

    Any ideas?

  • Ask Luke, I’m sure he could come up with some interesting options! (LukeNYC).

  • Oh how nice, ive got tons of ideas but none that would work in NYC. I am from Denver CO, and have never been to new york, but cant wait to go. Hope you find something amazing to do together!

  • Aww. how cute. :)

maybe you should just go to a his/her spa? and relax! (i’m not in NY, so i can’t suggest a specific location…sorry!)

  • I am sure whatever you pick to go to your wife will love it.

  • How bout taking the train somewhere? CT or LI ocean front?
or Poconos or Vermont is cool too, maybe a snowboarding session?

  • camping is good. don’t know if it’s too cold up there right now, but in texas it’d be perfect for the weekend. in fact, what made me think of it is a xanga friend is headed out right now for just that. open campfire, beer, hotdogs, and some beautiful woods.

hope you find something you both enjoy to do.

  • How about Saratoga Springs?  There’s a lot there–horses, a spa, and an old writer’s community called Yaddo (Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath were once residents there)–fo name a few.  Here’s a link: http://www.escapemaker.com/ny/saratoga/saratoga.html

  • One thing I’d suggest is instead of a “getaway”, maybe a day where she is pampered where you send her to a day spa (by herself or with a friend) and you do things around the house (whether you already do them or not) and then have a nice dinner waiting for her when she gets home……end it with some wine and a bubble bath….  just a thought…..*shrugs*

  • Sorry I am no help but i hope you find a nice place..getaways are important

  • Bronx Zoo? Come to NJ for a day! We have awesome parks… although they are nicer in the spring time, really…

  • Why go anywhere………..spend a couple bucks on some tropical decorations…….maybe a string of lights……grass skirts…….drinks with with fruit and cheese or whatever makes you feel sunny and warm…..unplug the phones….and relax……….hugs.

  • Oh and make sure you get some funky sunglasses to set the mood……….LOL

  • Depending on travel time, pop over to PA and go camping for the weekend.  Near Milford there’s some nice affordable places to stay.

  • I say go to Saratoga Springs as well.  Cozy little town… I am on a two week vacation from MInnesota and just don’t want to leave.

  • I look forward to hearing what you come up with.

what about just a really nice htel in the city? Sometimes  its nice just to be somewhere that isn’t your home.

    Good luck.

  • If renting a car is OK, you could go to the Hamptons. That’s what we did two weeks ago. We stayed at a B&B at Sag Harbor, had a nice breakfast at a cute cafe. Then we drove around the area and walked on the beach. After that we went to a vineyard, tasted a few kinds of wine with cheese. We drove to the tip of the island at Montauk and saw the lighthouse. It was a pretty cool trip. Then I got sick and paid for all the fun I had So, you should be careful.

  • I’ve got a ton of ideas…for weekend getaways here…in California.  Since I’ve never been to NYC, I’ve got no ideas for you.  :(   Sorry.  Of course, if you decide to make an expensive week-long trip to the Bay, let me know. ;)

  • local hotels especialy in the city have great spas in them and package deals during the off season

I would look at priceline andother sites like that  for last minute hotel deals, with spas.

  • i hear those MK parties are pretty relaxing

  • forget NYC! Chicago is the place to be.

    but…definitely a longer drive…dang.

  • There are lots of hotels with spas attached, or you could just check into a hotel that has an indoor pool, a jacuzzi, etc.
I actually have a list of them in the area, message me if you are interested.

  • I hope you can fiind something.

  • Cape May, New Jersey. Lots of beauty, the ocean and amazing restaurants. You can’t go wrong. I go there almost every summer myself.

the web site is kind of bunk, but seriously… check it out.

  • You should come to my home town…

    Clovis, CA

You’ll find nothing to do here.

    lol

  • You might try something in the Poconos (around Stroudsburg, PA I believe).  There’s a lot to do there, and it’s probably less than 2 hours from nyc.

  • Hmmm how about going south? Virgina is for lovers or so ssays the old ad hook for the state. North Carolina is nice too and cheaper than new england. I don’t know if the train ride makes it do-able for a weekend getaway.
I thought there were hot springs in the finger lakes area…

  • If you care about the city life, how about Philly, NYC’s smaller
sibling? We have stuff to show that’s good for about a weekend.
Chinatown bus is 20 bux roundtrip, so it’s pretty cheap. Heck, I’ll
personally give you a tour of the city and what we have to offer.

  • oops sorry I glossed over the one day part..

  • New Hampshire can be pretty relaxing…maybe Conway?

  • Ringing Rocks State Park maybe? Haven’t been there myself, but if you’re a nature buff, it might be fun…

  • funny… i was just thinking i wanted to go on a weekend getaway sometime soon too.  sorry i don’t have any suggestions for you since i’m in cali… :(

  • what about the botanical gardens? and a picnic in the park?

or a boat ride? is the Met out of the price range? what about a smaller museum and dinner at a 3-star retaurant that you’ve never been to? maybe a sporting event?

you know, there’s this website that might help you decide:

    http://www.iloveny.com/search/events_index.asp

you can either go to “See and Do” or “Events” to find something that fits your interests (and your budget).

Hope i was of some help. Have Fun! =)

  • @iamthebella -  ha ha. i am in Fresno, Ca. so i know what you mean. ^.-

  • Not trying to rag on you here, but a “one-day weekend getaway” is pretty much an oxymoron.

  • I don’t know how far you are from wine country and the finger lakes, but that’s not pricey at all and it is a fun trip. If its more than a two hour drive it wouldn’t be worth it though. Unless you like wine. Then it’s a great way to hit several wnieries. In four hours I leisurely hit at least ten wineries there (there are over 133 so they are just about every half mile) and they all hve tastings and all will ship wine to you.

  • Hey John,

Thanks for the comment on the race to 100K.  I did not realize I was rated D until ilsurvive pointed it out.  Even then it took me a few minutes to figure out how to change it.  I guess the punishment for being new and not understanding exactly how things work around here is not being featured.  My loss.  Any chance I will be featured now that I am rated more appropriately, or at the least, have I eraned my ‘True’ Badge.  ..:: dante

  • When I leave the house again, I’ll get back to you.

  • wow. i had no idea you were married.

  • and the winner is….

VON TRAPP FAMILY LODGE IN STOWE, VERMONT!

    second place: Glen Falls, NY.

  • How bout going to Junior’s for some cheesecake? The one in Brooklyn has really good cheeseburgers!

  • This doesn’t at all fit what you’re looking for but it’s just an idea to keep in mind for the summer.

There’s this place on the coast called Ocean Grove, NJ and it’s just south Asbury Park.  It’s a B&B town and it’s gorgeous. My boyfriend and I stay there a few days every year before we head into NYC.  There are great restaurants and stores and the boardwalk takes you into Asbury Park where there’s a lot in the works to rebuild and restore.

I recommend the Bellevue Stratford for a place to stay there.  It’s one of the less expensive B&Bs and the owners are so great.

  • out of topic: what is the purpose of having “personal url” in site address at account setting??? who use it??
