Looks like people like the new Weblog Archives:
People also almost universally like the idea behind Recommendations:
It’s kind of a shock. There are certain users who are really nice to other Xangans on their blog, but they are so brutally cruel when I post in my Xanga capacity… it’s really kinda shocking. It’s really burned me out lately to be on the receiving end of such venom.
Anyway, even those users have been nice to me lately. It’s a nice change of pace

The archives are really neat! I realized how… addicted I am to Xanga. >__<
Anyway, well, I think most people just want things to be better… hope people would be more polite though. Either way, it’s because people care about Xanga, and they get all worked up about it…
Well I am certainly glad that they are being nice to you now. I hope it continues.
Exercise your right to delete mean comments. Take control.
I think it is because you are a “big wig” and they think that by being mean and spiteful they will get your attention. It looks like it may be working.
I try to treat everyone as I would like to be treated.

Hang in there John. Remember you are Mr Xanga, therefore “the man”. Everyone loves sticking it to the man. Considering that, you are really well loved. Have you even noticed what people say about “Tom”.
I really do think you and all the staff i have noticed at xanga, are exceptionally nice people.
i mean, if its the name of fun that they are dissing each other, well sometimes it’s ok. makes entertaining reading. but it can get really nasty. so that’s not cool at all.

The archives look cool.
You know, I don’t understand why people put down Xanga and complain. I was fine with Xanga basic. It’s free and you do get a lot of features. I didn’t mind the ads. I thought it was a fair trade off and I understood that was part of the deal.
Yeah, I use Premium now but only because I thought I could use the extra storage for my pics. Although I haven’t posted a lot of pics, it’s still a pretty good deal.

Some people are just angling for attention. They’ll never be featured with ‘tudes like that…
Some guy came into my teahouse today during the lunch rush and demanded an application. When the server told him he’d have to wait, he started pounding on the table, making the whole restaurant go quiet and awkward-like. ‘Cause, that’s the best way to get a job – throw a temper tantrum. On his way out the door, he told an incoming customer, “They deal cocaine in this place”. Awesome. Maybe I’ll hire him to be my marketing director…
A big hug to you John..and kudos and all of that stuff…you do great work here..I can’t believe some of the comments I see …I don’t understand it….really…you give everyone a chance to opine about whatever you do…give imput…opt out..everything anyone could want…Please don’t think negative comments are the ‘general rule’..at least not with me and my friends..* We love it or we wouldn’t be here..*
I think some people just like to complain to the ‘big guy’ in charge..:) Try not to let it get to you…So far all of you that I have met..are all fantastic people…talented, and nice and caring about this great place that we all post and share and vent and just plain enjoy…remember…most of us I know it..most of us like you and Xanga and the ‘team’….hang in there..and darn..if I can help in any way..let me know..take good care..and I am glad most like the new things you mentioned..see**

the weblog archive really is great, it just made the whole post calendar truly useful!
this is great. u should bold the date at the calendar where there’s an entry…
anyway, i dont get it, what makes someone’s page able to get “true” badge, one of the reason,is it because he/she gets a lot of comments..i stumbled upon few xanga’s page that got the true badge but i see he/she doesn’t even have comments on their lastest 5 entries.

but seriously…I suppose when you’re one of the top dogs around here, and when you are as public and as accessible as you are (which endears you to most people, btw!) then it also puts you in the firing line….especially if replies from the helpdesk are slow…people know that they can just come over here and moan at you…they don’t tend to think that you are a person, but rather look at you more like an entity…..you are the corporation..you are xanga…and so if they are mad at xanga, then it’s very easy to take it out on you, unfortunately….the main thing is to be able to seperate yourself from it enough to not take the insults personally…..change the things you can change, and ignore the personal attacks! anyways, most of us here love you just fine!

I totally agree with what you just said to John. When I’ve felt the need, I’ve been critical (but I hope never cruel or venomous), but when I see something I like, I let Xanga people know. Cheers John!
I like the recommended option better than the stars. I would probably recommend lots of blogs that way rather than blogging about it. Very neat idea.
I’m sorry people have been mean to you. They probably don’t realize it and just using you as a sounding board for their rant. Don’t take it personally. You’re such a great guy I can’t see why anyone would not like you.

I had read about the recommendations but not the archives. I’m stoked at the archives page. Thanks so much. One thing that seemed to “disappear” from themes was the “oldest” link. I read a lot of new bloggers, and I love to go back and see what they posted at the beginning, then peruse selected entries from the past, so the archive feature is welcome.
Sorry about people talkin’ bad to you and being cruel when you are in your “official Xanga capacity” Some of us go out of our way to be equal, fair, personal, and forgiving in our comments, and others are filled with vitriol and can’t seem to find a nice thing to say.
But asking what’s up with that is like asking why mankind as a whole seems to be filled with vitriol and can’t find a nice thing to say.
Rock on, John. Perhaps the ones who appreciate you just don’t speak up as much.

IMO I think that some think that they will be perceived as sucking up to you if they are nice, and so they overcompensate that on the other end. I just try to comment only if I have something pertinent to say.

I hope you know that I appreciate all you do and if people can’t be polite then they should try to do the job that you and the rest of the xanga team do. Most would fail miserably. So here’s to you and the gang!

oh, and the Recommendations thing is kinda neat. I haven’t used it personally yet, but, it’s a really unique and snazzy idea. Very creative. It brings a holistic dynamic to the site, making it seem more rounded and interactive. A real community.

I can’t imagine anyone act brutally cruel to you since all you do is make Xanga a better place.
The archives are a nice feature, one I had long wished for but never really realized I was missing. “Oh, I wish there was an archive…” I’d think, before turning my attention elsewhere.
Recommendations are a really good feature. When I read something thoughtful or thought-provoking, or even just downright interesting, I’d like to be able to easily share it with others.
The star feature, on the other hand, I’m not so keen on. People blog for different reasons. Whether or not I like their post is irrelevant. If I really like it, I’d like to share it with others (see “recommendations” above) but if I don’t, what’s the point of me giving them a low number of stars? What are they going to do, try better in the future to write posts that appeal to me?
I don’t want bloggers trying to win their readers’ approval. I want people to blog for their own reasons. If I like what they write, that’s great, but it is a totally irrelevant side benefit to their reason for posting.

I started coming directly to you with problems at the recommendation of notforprophet, because he told me you were always willing to listen, and could get things done. People are mean to you? That is really crappy. You’re definitely more hands on, accessible and nicer than other “top guys” at other sites. There is no need for them to be mean. I think the Recommend feature is actually a really good idea. And hopefully, it will make your job easier.
