  • TROJAN VIRUS ON XANGA?


    Hey you guys over at Chatterbox…  what’s going on?!  We’ve been getting emails like this one:



    Each time I sign on, I get a few popups (though I’m a premium member), which is no problem.  The thing that bothers me is that the popups, from time to time, automatically attempt to download viruses onto my computer.  Luckily, my computer has good virus protection software that catches the viruses before they become effective, but it is still unnerving.  Also, another virus attempted to infect my computer when I clicked on a link on my “chatter box”  – it’s a link that I find often labeled “unlock”. 


    Now, my questions are thus:  Are these infected popups from xanga or from sponsors?  Could these be a result of the “chatter box”, the site (recommended by xanga) that hosts this function, or their sponsors?   And are you aware that the site you are patronizing is sending viruses to your customers?

    Megan – I believe you are right, these “trojan virus” popups seem to be coming from Chatterbox.  That’s because Chatterbox is popup-supported – one of their popups must be triggering some anti-virus software.  Please keep in mind that Chatterbox is an outside service, and has nothing to do with Xanga.  We don’t use popups to support Xanga.  If we did, we could make a bazillion dollars.  But we don’t like popup advertisements, and refuse to inflict them upon our users.


    To the guys at Chatterbox: could you please look into this and let us know what’s up?

  • Just curious.. do you know if the pop-ups contain an actual virus or if it’s just a funky pop-up that our anti-virus programs don’t like? Is there any way to actually tell?

  • texie – i don’t think they are actual viruses… just a funky popup.  but i’m hoping the guys at chatterbox have a better sense for what’s going on…

  • can you reply back to me on xanga i asked a question and here it is. i right clicked on a xanga once and all of a sudden my anti virus opned i was like wtf ! and my anti-virus said that i had a virus and i was so scared but luckily the virus was still dl so i could see who it was ! PLZ REPLY BACK TO ME ON XANGA why did this happen ?

  • I do not have that great of a virus scan at home.  However when I am at work, the McAfee will turn on and go berserk whenever I load my xanga page, which does have a chatterbox.  You would get bombarded with pop-ups from the chatterbox.  That would explain all the complaints from fellow xangans on trying to view or comment on my site. 

    I honestly do not know how to fix this or not.  I just noticed the virus scan recently at work.

  • thanks for the warning. sadly, i think i caught the virus… more than once too. my computer begins to lag out of nowhere sometimes and it gets annoying. i’m hoping this’ll get fixed asap

  • yeah, I really hate the popups. I just wish chatterbox would get rid of them before I write my own chatterbox.

    Anyway, I would recommend that everyone get this program Spy Sweeper. It’s a great program that detects this kinda trash and removes them. While running it, when it detects spyware (tracking cookies and whatnot), it will delete them on the spot. Basic features are free, but subscription services are not. The regular features are probably more than enough for the average user.

  • I think they could be browser hijackers. I had some stuff automatically downloaded right to my desktop. I downloaded a copy of Ad-Aware and although it didn’t get rid of all of them immediately, once I discovered the program that was causing them to duplicate themselves, I was able to get rid of them. I also have Browser Hijack Blaster and a popup blocker. Even though some of the ads bipass the blocker, I think the Hijack Blaster is doing something. I’m not sure, but, I haven’t had any more problems…so far.

  • I’ve been getting a lot of pop-ups on my xanga lately as well. For some reason, it only happens roughly 1 in 5 times after i sign in. I also get two or three notices with “warnings” or something-rather on them. I cant recall what they said but im sort of worried now. I’m running 2004 Norton Anti-Virus software and it still hasn’t caught anything. Does this mean i dont have to worry or should i take down my chatterbox scripts?

  • i suggest xanga make their own chatterbox exactly the same for premium members only, wit’ no text ads or popups yay

  • You know.. I wouldn’t mind maybe 1/2 popups if it means the banner could go away.. Is that feasible? Eh.. I’m not sure if everyone else would like it, though.. =P Actually, it’s not such a good idea because now pop-ups (especially the hidden ones and full screen ones and installing ones) are evil. What happened to that good old classic IMAGE popup huh?! heh..

    i get so much popups. it drives me crazy. is it true about the chatterbox? should i remove it?

    I think something’s wrong with Xanga lately. Well, commenting anyway. When a friend of mine posts a comment, it shows on the side that there’s one, but when you scroll down, you can’t see the comment. Yet I see it on my Feedback Log.

    And vice versa. The other day, my friend posted me a comment and I could see it under the entry, but on the side, it says “2 props, 0 comment.” Is there some kind of bug?

  • I added a ‘chatbox’ on my TEST zanga site; within the first few seconds of trying it out McAfee pick up a ‘trojan virus’ (I forget the name of it now) needles to say I deleted the chatbox off my site for that very reason.  But who’s to say it was for real?  The virus I mean. Could be a joke that some ‘GEEK’ added into the program to test the users anti-virus software, returns a ‘cookie’ if it’s activated.  If no ‘cookie’ returns then send Anti-Virus info via a ‘pop-up’ to the users PC! Now that WOULD be a useful idea!  After all, we are but guinea pigs when we forage in the WWW trough//..arn’t we?

  • whoa.. hey i’ve seen that unlock thing.. also, some blogs have music from msealsmusic.com, they have a whole lot of popups there.. a few times i got a virus from the popups too.. but norton got rid of it

    Xanga Admin, please negotiate with Flooble Chatterbox or ban their services from Xanga. They get all their advertising money from Xanga users and their site would collapse without Xanga support. No chatterbox is worth a dangerous virus!

  • Thank You for responding to my e-mail in a timely fasion. I still have pop-ups after getting rid of my beloved chatter box. Hopefull all of these problems that have recently been an issue for xanga, will be resolved a.s.a.p. I’d like to use my html codes on my web page that I pay for. I think it’s only fair that I am able to put whatever I want on in, because it is now MINE. So as for that. *I’m not bieng rude* I love you guys, I’m just aggravated at the situation, not the people who could fix it….. Any how, This is just another complaint that you probably don’t want to read. But I have to agree with paying Xanga witholders. WE WANT OUR NEAT THINGS BACK. THIS IS CRAZY <3333

  • Hey man, i’m just another xanga blogger here to help. I’m just going to let you know, myself, that I found a way to block the xagna add just to give you heads up on it. I’m sure theres more out there that did the same as I did. I know you guys have to go scowering to find the ones that still don’t have the adds, so i’m going to save you that trouble and give you a pointer in the next direction that you have to go. I can always put the ad back on if you don’t find a way to get rid of it, just leave me a comment about that.

  • I’ve been meaning to ask you the same thing. Come to thing of it, I’ve only encountered this problem after I set up a chatterbox on my site.  I’ve removed it.  But, in the past week, my computer has caught 3 trojan virus attempts.  The strange thing is it all take place around 6pm.  Could u just remove the chatterbox option altogether?

  • i dont think anyone who posted previously will actually read this but maybe someone who comes by after.. it doesnt matter so much if YOUR site has a chatter box, you will get pop ups from any site you VISIT that has a chatter box installed on it.

    so, if you remove yours and visit susie-q’s and she has a chatter box, ta-da more pop ups to deal with.

  • I hope that you or someone else catch this comment. 

    In the past two weeks, I’ve been having problems with catching up on reading my subscriptions.  Half of the names do not show up under the updated subscriptions.  I’ve been finding out that people have updated, a day later or so, only after I clicked on their page without the aid of the ‘read your subscriptions” page.  To my knowledge, I have not been placed on  block by the individuals nor deleted.  I am confused as to why I am having such a problem receiving the updated subscriptions. 

    Please let me know.  Thank you.

  • OMG! That is just awful! I dont use Chatterbox anymore cos I hardly use it and so they stopped my service. Good thing I dont use that anymore. and I hate popups!

  • Yah, I noticed that when I had a chatterbox…and when I visit sites that have a chatterbox. I finally got rid of mine, but it still happens when I go to sites that have one. Thank goodness for anti-virus software.

  • I have a boxed xanga, and for some reason whenever the Xanga banner ad loads, it resizes my page and a left-to-right scrollbar appears. I’m really confused because it does not resize other pages like l1lstah_x’s xanga.

    Please help.

  • ooooh i know what a trojan is, it is a software that is force – downloaded onto ur PC and it forces your computer to download other viruses, trojans, worms, etc. very scary thing.. called a trojan horse… I got attacked by one the same way with the chatterbox “unlock” button, but I have norton Antivirus, thankfully, and got rid of it in time…

  • Actually this is an unrelated-to-chatterbox comment, but I wasn’t quite sure where to leave questions (since in the past I’ve tried the various help email address @xanga.com and gotten all my emails bounced back?).

    Two questions…

    Since the time-change for Daylight Savings Time, my entry post times are correct, but my comment times are always off (e.g. it was 8pm on my computer, and the comment came up as 7pm).  The “automatically adjust for DST” checkbox didn’t seem to make a difference.

    Also, I deleted a comment and posted another – but the total number of comments only accounts for the deletion (and not the added comment), even after hitting “refresh” and even clearing the cache.  Is that a bug, or just a busyness-in-updating-the-server problem?

    Thanks for all the work you guys put in.  I’ve really enjoyed the time I’ve spent here on xanga.com.

  • Just a suggestion on your banner ad thing.  Could you possibly make it so that you can choose the color of your ad?  The white totaly makes my xanga look horrible.  I realize that the banner is your only way of making money, but I think a whole bunch of people would appreciate it.  Thanks in advance.

  • What’s up with the underlined phrases within posts?? Anytime I post now, certain words/phrases (i.e. college, virus protection, etc.) are underlined and linked to ad sites of similar nature… This sucks, man.

  • I really don’t know what to say…I join Xanga less than 3 weeks,all my friends had one,I think I better join them…most of them had that Chatta-box too.I am the first one found out that’s a visus & tons of ad-ware and cookies after I put that box things on mine…….Now,everytime I come to Xanga…I will put my firewall software on….but for some of my friends without any firewall….they give-up Xanga…..

    One of my friends told me to let you know about a problem in my page. 

    I have premium and I am experiencing some problems!  When I log into my page it says I have a certain amount of comments.  When I go into my site privately it shows more then what was stated.  Sometimes my comments don’t even show until the next day.

  • Hmm.  Actually I’ve been having trouble with the popup ads too…I have McAfee, and it used to catch the Trojans…but then one day it gave me an error comment and said it couldn’t clean the Trojan, and I haven’t been able to “find” the problem/get rid of it.  I tried installing Ad-Aware, and that deleted a lot of “problem files” but I’m still have problems (and McAfee isn’t catching any of them now).  Any chance you could help me?  (sorry to add to the clamour of requests for help…but I guess I’m not sure who else would know what to do about this…?)

    for some reason when i go to check my ‘sites i read’ it is showing that no one has updated since sunday.  and with it being tuesday now, that has to be a mistake.  and infact i’ve checked other sites and it is a mistake.  and also i cannot get my subscriptions to show on my public site.

  • i keep getting this “connect to xanga” box. is that normal? i don’t want to put in my user name & pw because i have no idea what it is. and when i click on cancel, pictures doesn’t show up (but did before the box came up). confused…

  • Okay…so there is a login that pops up when I go to certain users sites…I’m not sure what it is. So I just figured it was some kind of new thing she added (she has premium and I don’t) so I tried to log in using my name and password….but it froze my computer! Do you know what it is?

  • I am new to Xanga so I really don’t know what is going on. But I like everybody else I see above me has the same problem. I have this pop-up that comes up to ask my log in name and password. What is up with that. When I put in the info it WON’t go away!!!! Please let us know what is going on.

  • Ok I made this comment on your other blog but just in case you don’t get to that blog I will also comment here.  I have been trying to get into my site for about an hour now and I can not get in.  A security box pops up and says i.xanga.com user name password and so on I enter my name and password and it keeps popping up and refuses to allow me access to my own site.  In between the pop up box showing up my pictures refuse to show.  Whats up???  This is frustrating and annoying.  My friend also on xanga finally got thru to  her site but still no pics or anything, I can’t even gain access to my site at all the box will not go away.  I would appreciate any and all help with this problem ! ! !   Thank you!

  • that mustve sucked thank goodness i dont use fooble, when i used to use chatterboxes i used bluebox, it was more efficient anyway, i could block up to five isps, have words censored and a great color choice to make it look nice..yep, the only thing that sucked about it though is that ads would post in the chatterbox but there were no popups so i was happy..or at least i dont think there were popups…i dont know why im typing about bluebox blah, i was just wondering about the xanga ad, im a classic user and i dont hide the ad anymore but there was a code which would change the colors of the ad to what you wanted so that it would match my layout, well now because of the changes it doesnt work anymore, is there anyway you could make it an option to change the colors of the xanga ad? most people on xanga dont like them because they dont match the xanga.

  • Does this involved a pup.exe file? I think it would be kind of xanga to post a solution to the problem. Some xanga members might have contracted this virus and may not know it…

  • I was just wondering if there’s any way to fix Xanga for Daylight Savings Time?  Because the time says the right time as the link under the entry on the front page of my xanga, but when you go to comment, the time’s an hour earlier (looks like it wasn’t adjusted for Daylight Savings) and all the comments’ times are an hour earlier . . . any way at all I can fix this?

  • one thing you could do to protect yourself is download Mozilla Firefox. its an internet program that blocks popups and stuff like that. youll have no problem worryign about the chatterbox virus.

  • Hi I have a question regarding the Featured Content…I received 84 eprops on one entry on Sunday, April 11. I was surprised to find out that I was not on featured…I tried asking other people and they told me that I should have been on featured, but I wasn’t…so I was wondering whether there was anything else that I needed to do in order to be on featured??     but one thing is…..you know all the codes we get from…godknowswhere? all the fancy ones where people can’t copy your source n’ use different colors fer differnt things etc? this is already my third site ( see? this is what make xanga cool, it doens’t limit you) and whatever i try to do, i always..i mean ALWAYS get an error sing thingy at the bottom left of my window…what’s wrong?

  • Sorry, don’t mean to offend here, but the best way to avoid viruses via e-mail, downloads and/or etc., is to own a Mac. In the couple of times that my system has crashed, in the last 6 years, been able to re-install ALL of the system in about 45 – 60 minutes. [dodging everyone's PCs] -k

  • Thanks John.  Have u heard anything more about possible trojan virus from chatterbox?  I’m still wary about visiting a few of my friends’ pages that i know have chatterbox.

    my xanga’s totally messed up right now..i put some code into it but i can’t even access the main page of it anymore to delete it..so basically my xanga is…STUCK!

    is there anyway to get into it so i cant delete all the junk?!

  • Man people are dumb. I’ve always told them to take those stupid chatterbox and millions of other java script crap off their sites that are linked from other sites. I can’t stand getting a hundred pop ups when I visit a xanga site. In fact I usually stop going to their site all together. Certain site meters do it too. A lot of that junk people put on their site does it.

    Xanga should just ban half that stuff.

  • The new GAY hack targets the javascript for sitemeter. I have deleted mine for now until this is solved, but it’s apparently taking over quite a few blogs I read. Notagoose has info to remove it on her site. I posted on another infected site and found myself the target so I had to delete all scripts and cleared out offline content, cookies, history, etc and ran ad-aware.

    the featured content’s been boiling my ass.
    that are a TON of REALLY great xangas out there,
    with posts that mean a lot

    but i’ve noticed that the featured content usually features complete . crap .
    i visited a featured site.

    &all those one line meaningless posts.
    how do you pick out featured content?

  • there is a hacker that has hacked a couple of my friends xanga’s, changed their info, e-mail address, password, and posts. One example is my friend Fallinsnow55 or something lyk that.Another friend tried to track him but he was off before it finsihed (less then 2min!). please tell me the name of a good program to help stop such a problem. i want to stop code decyphers from revealing my password.
