  • AOL PICS ON XANGA


    AOL has started to block “remote linking” of pictures by Xanga users.  Our first clue was a batch of emails like this one:



    To: Xanga Help
    Subject: AOL Pics not showing up


    I have an AOL account, and I store images on my FTP account. The images from AOL are not showing up on Xanga even though they show up [from other sites like] EZBOARD.


    It seems, so far, that only pics from AOL are affected this way on your site.  However, since the same images do appear on other sites (non-Xanga), it is likely a Xanga problem.  … I am getting red X-boxes for AOL ftp images posted to Xanga.


    We looked into this and it’s true!  Except this isn’t something on our end…  AOL is blocking all “remote linking” by Xanga users.  In other words, you can no longer host images and music on your AOL account and use them on your Xanga account.  You can still use these images and music files on other sites - just not on Xanga.com.


    Conspiracy or Coincidence?  We don’t know… but we’re appealing the decision to the AOL webmaster, if we can get ahold of them.  We’ll keep you posted.

  • that is so lame… then again, it’s probably because you guys generate so much traffic that it bogs down their server. So even though it sux being blocked by AOL, it’s somewhat flattering, knowing that you’re getting enough traffic to be blocked, isn’t it? :)

  • This sucks, I mean, AOL has problems with outside companies/sites like Trillian, and now Xanga. I had lots of problem with AIM on Trillian. I suggest any AOL users to place pictures on Tripod, Angelfire, or any other web hosting service.

    on the upside, for some reason the music clip i have over on aol still works on my blog. . .or at least *i* can still hear it. i don’t know if that’s because i’m logged onto AOL when i access xanga, or what. . .

  • I have a really big problem…I know people who have a Xanga account and all they care about are eProps.  That’s is so annoying.  They put up entries to get some really big number right next to “eprops”.  You should consider removing it…I know it’s what Xanga is famous for but it’s so annoying.  I rather have a ton of comments because you get feedback from readers and that really satisfies you.  And a lot of my friends do too

  • One reason for their remote blocking of pictures I think is because AOL is releasing sometime soon an AOL version of a weblog/online journal…possibly cause of that.

  • Can you really blame AOL?

    hosting pictures costs money. websites and such are businesses.  why should they be expected to spend money hopsting pictures that dont bring traffic into their own site, that in fact help bring traffic to another site?

    do you expect hy-vee to let bakers hand out free samples of bakers product in their stores? what sense is there in that, letting the competition advertise in your store?

    so quit whinning. it’s only like $20 to get hosted, or jsut dont have pictures.

  • This happened to me like 3 weeks ago. I posted a new background and it wouldnt appear at all. my Xanga was all effed up but I’m hosting my pics at fortunecity.com now. But I LOVED my aol server. lol.

  • I have AOL because we’re in the middle of nowhere and can’t get DSL. But even so, it’s easy for my kids to use and easy for me to set up blocking for them and monitor their computer use. It just sucks that they’re blocking picture sharing. But why would you do that anyway when you can upload your pics right to Xanga?

  • AOL totally sucks for doing that…

    Aol members space doesnt work as was stated, but if u use “you got pictures” space, it works fine. Only drawback is u cant use animations (actually u can, but they wont move) and you have to view source in the album on the picture u want to use to find the url address for bandwidthing. Might be more trouble than its worth to some peeps. Just thot Id give out the tip.

    Dear WINDOWS user,

    Have you taken the necessary steps to help ensure that your computer is clean and protected from the second phase MSBLAST.exe virus or Lov San Web Worm? if not we reccommend that you that you immediatly follow our suggested steps below.

    If your using the following Microsoft operating systems we recommend that you follow the instructions below to remove or safegguard your computer from the MSBLAST.exe virus or lovsan Web Worm. Even if your computer isnt affected now, it could be in the future.

    Microsoft Windows Nt 4.0

    Microsoft Windows Nt 4.0 terminal services Edition

    Microsoft Windows 2000

    Microsoft Windows XP

    Microsoft Windows Server 2003

    Please take the time to follow the steps outlined below to help ensure that your computer is safe and clear of the MSBLAST.exe virus or Lov San Web Worm. [ This and other related info can be also be found on our website at http://www.microsoft.com]

    1. Close all open programs and press and hold down the following keys simultaneosly: Ctrl (Control), ALt and Delete

    2. Click the Task Manager button (if a pop-up box appears with a options list)

    3. Select the Process tab

    4.Click the IMAGE NAME column to sort the list into alphabetical order

    5.Slete the msblast.exe file by clicking on it once. then clikc the End Process button. If you do not see the msblast.exe in th list of running tasks please proceed to step 6 as you should still check your system for the worm and apply the Microsoft patch.(Some operating system require that you log in as the onwer/administrator in order to install this patch)

    6. Now you can close the windows task manager screen by clicking the X in the upper right hand corner.

    7. Next determine which operating system you are using. Microsoft has different patches to protect each operating system , you will need to know which operating system you have on your computer.

    8. click on the start button, go up to  RUN. Type winver and press the enter key. the window display will indicate wich operating system is being used( windows 2000, windows xp ect.)

    9.Once you have determined your operatinging system got http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp and click on the link for your operating system.

    10. Click download on the right side of the page

    11. Choose Run or Open from the pop-up box that appears.

    12. Confirm secruity warning pop-up by clicking yes.

    13.Follow pop-up instructions.

    14.Once your computer has finished go to http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/fixblast.exe , when prompted click open.

    15.When it has finished you will have sucessfully checked your system for the MSBlast Worm and install the patch

    Please Note: If done incorrectly some steps in this FAQ can cause problems with your operating system You should carefully review all terms , policies, and the instructions on anywebsite that you visit while following these steps. Please note that while I am provided you with this information about how to protect your computer from the LovSan Web Worm or MSBlast.exe Virus  i am not responseable for any damage that may accure to your computer.

  • I really don’t think it’s just Aol…because I don’t have aol, and my pics are gone too. My profile pic and the pics I posted of my family, among others, that I took with my pc cam and saved them to my computer, so it can’t be because the page has exspired, like  Xanga told me….Please Help Me. figure this thing out…soon. I payed good money to scare pics with everyone.

  • Is there any possible way to delete eprops that someone gave you? Maybe you deleted their comment because it was mean, but you still see their eprops. How do I get rid of those?
