WHAT YOU’VE BEEN TELLING US
I’m wiped out: I’ve been replying to about sixty emails a day in the evenings. We have someone answering most of the questions, but sometimes the questions are kinda tricky (especially after our code change on Friday night), so he forwards those emails onto me.
If you ever want a developer to fix bugs on the site, put them in charge of customer service emails for a few days!
There are a few emails that seem to come up a lot. Some of these are bugs, and some of them are usability issues:
- AOL 8.0:
- There’s something funky going on with AOL 8.0 (maybe 7.0 too?), where it’s hard to post using xTools.
- We’re looking into this, but having trouble reproducing the behaviour. Hopefully we’ll know more soon!
- There’s something funky going on with AOL 8.0 (maybe 7.0 too?), where it’s hard to post using xTools.
- XTOOLS DOESN’T WORK ON SOME BROWSERS
- We’re working on adding one-click access to the text-only version of xTools
- We’re also considering adding a setting that lets you set your comment fields to text, by default.
- We’re working on adding one-click access to the text-only version of xTools
- ARCHIVES AREN’T ALWAYS CURRENT
- Archives are generated all at once, once a month or so. As the number of Premium users has grown (including free trials), the Archiving process started taking longer and longer. This increases the odds that it will crash and none of the archives will make it to your Archive files page!
- We’re working right now on a process that generates your Archives on demand. So rather than generating all the archives at once, it only runs one at a time (or so).
- This should come out in the next week or so… stay tuned!

- SAFE MODE
- It isn’t clear to a lot of people that “Safe Mode” lets you fix your Look and Feel (or HTML in posts) when your site gets messed up with bad HTML
- Working on fixes to make this more clear
- It isn’t clear to a lot of people that “Safe Mode” lets you fix your Look and Feel (or HTML in posts) when your site gets messed up with bad HTML
- BACKGROUNDS AND MUSIC
- There’s a lot of confusion over how to upload Backgrounds and Music. This is probably our most Frequently Asked Question.
- We’ll address this when we clean up the Look and Feel page next month.
- For the record, we can’t host MP3 files on our site because the bandwidth costs would bankrupt us!
- There’s a lot of confusion over how to upload Backgrounds and Music. This is probably our most Frequently Asked Question.
- UPLOADING PROFILE PICS
- Browser caching makes it hard for people to see the new pic when they reupload their Profile Pics
- We’re working on a fix… it’s a bit trickier than it seems to fix this one.
- Browser caching makes it hard for people to see the new pic when they reupload their Profile Pics
- CHATTERBOXES
- People have lots of problems installing ChatterBoxes.
- And when the code mucks up their sites, they’re not sure what to do (see Safe Mode above)
- People have lots of problems installing ChatterBoxes.
- SUBSCRIPTON EMAILS
- Something’s definitely going on with our subscription emails. Even weirder: some people get the feedback emails and not our subscription emails – what’s up with that?!
- We’re a bit stumped here. Maybe we’ll change the email that subscriptions comes from, and that will clear it up?
- Something’s definitely going on with our subscription emails. Even weirder: some people get the feedback emails and not our subscription emails – what’s up with that?!
- IM PROFILES
- More people than you’d think want to link their Xanga blog to their IM profiles… and vice versa.
- More people than you’d think want to link their Xanga blog to their IM profiles… and vice versa.
- ACCOUNT HACKING
- There’s a thin line between love and hate, it seems. When friendships fall apart, the first thing they often do is sign onto their ex-friend’s Xanga account and deface it.
- We’re working on a feature that will let hacked users “reclaim accounts”, even after the account email and password have been compromised.
- There’s a thin line between love and hate, it seems. When friendships fall apart, the first thing they often do is sign onto their ex-friend’s Xanga account and deface it.
- THE EXCHANGE RATE IN CANADA AND AUSTRALIA
- Many people write us to tell us that the exchange rates in Canada and Australia make paying for Xanga Premium prohibitively expensive.
- I feel bad! I’m not sure what we can do about this… maybe if we all exchange currency at the same time on the same day, we could devalue the dollar for a few hours?
- Many people write us to tell us that the exchange rates in Canada and Australia make paying for Xanga Premium prohibitively expensive.
- XANGAZON ON ALTERNATIVE BROWSERS
- By “Alternative Browsers”, I mean Mozilla, Netscape, and all Mac Browsers
- If we’d known that offering Xangazon only on Internet Explorer would generate so much email, we’d never have launched the feature!
- We’re working on a fix. It’s not as high priority as I’d like it to be, since some of these other issues are more urgent for us.
- This is more of a principle thing actually: we really like to be as standards-compliant as possible, so it bothers me that this code doesn’t work.
- Also, hell hath no fury like that of a Mac user who thinks that a site doesn’t support Macs. I try not to take it personally… perhaps it’s displaced aggression that Mac lost out to the PC? I know how you feel - it bums me out too.
- By “Alternative Browsers”, I mean Mozilla, Netscape, and all Mac Browsers
While I’m at it, some of the features that are frequently requested:
- TIMEZONES
- I guess you can only say “Coming Soon!” for a few years before people get suspicious.
- I guess you can only say “Coming Soon!” for a few years before people get suspicious.
- BACKDATING POSTS
- We’re seeing more users move from other systems into Xanga, so this is becoming more of an issue
- We’re seeing more users move from other systems into Xanga, so this is becoming more of an issue
- ANONYMOUS COMMENTS
- In other words, commenting without a Xanga account (especially asked in regard to Guestbooks. Comments and Subscriptions without a Xanga account are a distant second and third here)
- This is a tough one for us, because anonymous comments tend to generate so many abuse complaints (even just off of Chatterboxes). We’re working on a solution though.
- In other words, commenting without a Xanga account (especially asked in regard to Guestbooks. Comments and Subscriptions without a Xanga account are a distant second and third here)
- CHANGING USERNAME
- We’re working on a feature that will let you do this now. We want to discourage it a bit though, because it generates a lot of customer service email from confused users.

- MULITPLE ACCOUNTS ON SAME EMAIL
- This one comes up a lot. We had a good reason we forbid this… I just don’t remember what it was.
- We’ll probably allow this soon, unless someone remembers our Very Good Reason in time.
- This one comes up a lot. We had a good reason we forbid this… I just don’t remember what it was.
- DELETING ACCOUNTS
- This comes up a lot too.
- It’s another one of those “trickier than it seems” features. What do we do with the old comments left under that username? What if the user wants to undelete the account later… and how do we verify that the person who wants to delete the account is the right user?
- These are all solvable problems though, and we’re working on them.
- This comes up a lot too.
A final word: we love you whether you’re Classic or Premium. It’s nice if you upgrade, but we understand that a lot of you can’t afford it. So we try to keep most of our services available for free, and we don’t distinguish between classic and premium users when it comes to answering our help@xanga email.
The only reason I won’t answer your email is if you threaten to kill me – I think that’s a bit over the top? In general, emailing me at my personal address probably increases the amount of time it takes to answer your email (I have to forward it by hand to the appropriate email inbox, and it’s taken care of the next day). Leaving comments on my blog asking for help is hard for me to track… in general, it’s best if you email us using our help page.
But if something is up with the site (Xanga seems slow, you can’t access the site, your left modules are suddenly no longer transparent), definitely email me. I read all of my email – often the first time I hear about an issues is when someone emails me, and it’s always appreciated!
- AOL 8.0:
Comments (29)
This was fab, but one more question. (Sorry) What about search? It only works in a blue moon. Very frustrating.
Also, thanks for close my site… but I would like more info. If you close your site and the come back to xanga, how do you “un-hide” your SIR and so forth?
I am supremely interested in the ability to make posts private in large batchs (a month or so at a time) but “close your site” seems designed for more extreme purpose. Are we ever going to see this?
For the record (in my case) this is what makes the new calendar tough. If I want to take December’s posts private, it is already tedious, but will be much worse when I don’t know which days to go to without clicking around.
Thanks. You sound beat.
Hey Elsa – I have to write a post about the Calendar soon (I’ll do it tomorrow). But a quick comment here – unlike the old Calendar, this one is much smarter!
If you put in “December 31, 2002″ (for example) and hit the button , it’s smart enough to show you more than just the posts on that day. It will show you the posts going backwards from that date.
Check out what I mean:
http://www.xanga.com/private/home.aspx?nextdate=12%2f31%2f2002
That links works for me - I took out the reference to user so I’m hoping it works for everyone else too!
ps if you’re trying to batch-private a bunch of posts, you might like this trick: shift-click on the “public” links, so that it opens in the another window. This way, you can make five posts private quickly, without having to wait for the page to reload. I use to shut down sites this way, before Monsur programmed the close site and dramatically improved the quality of my life.
pps (phew!) for the “close your site” feature, you can turn everything back on just like you would normally (make each post public again, unhide your SIR module just like normal). It doesn’t do anything magical – just makes the process of closing down a site less tedious…
Hooray! Thank John. Great news on the calandar and I am off to try the 5 posts thing now.
Sorry, I back. I don’t get it.
“Shift-click on the public links..” Can you clarify that? Thanks
and while we’re here.. Last few weeks I have been having trouble posting / editing. This is with current IE.
The x-tools box does not open fully. Now the odd thing is, if I try it repeatedly, it will eventually open (without rebooting or anything) but it takes two or three or five tries and is very annoying. Any ideas?
I hate to think of enduring this (having to click each post 4 times) to make them private.
Never mind on the shift-click. I got it.
Guess I’ll have to find a scripting hack for the exchange rate issue. I’m gonna be rich!!!
to me, changing usernames is a nice idea that will confuse all the little xangans around cause the xanga world war I
I LIKE the new calendar! It has made navigating through old posts much easier. You guys are doing a great job. Do you ever do anything other than worry about Xanga? The next time you’re all in Indiana, I’d love to take you out for dinner, and a movie.
My biggest feature request for 2003 is this: do away with anonymous subscribing. Period.
My, you work hard, John….and regarding your other post…switch to ham slices
…. RoseMary
Sounds like y’all stay busy for a while… Looking forward to all of the new features!
MULITPLE ACCOUNTS ON SAME EMAIL
<LI>This one comes up a lot. We had a good reason we forbid this… I just don’t remember what it was.
<LI>We’ll probably allow this soon, unless someone remembers our Very Good Reason in time.
well, if someone signs someone else up for a few accounts, that one person would get quite a few daily junk emails from xanga (2 per account).
oops, I’m sorry I sent that big huge file in the email. I hope you have room?
It wasn’t *that* big, though.
You guys must be so busy. Y’all are cool
Ah, excellent. As always, the updates are appreciated, sir. Now, if you could somehow deliver liberal amounts of free turkey and/or mashed potatoes as part of the deal, we’d be all set. Gravy, of course, is optional.
Oops! I guess I should have checked here first before I shot off that feedback about anonymous comments…. anyhow, thanks for the update on the situation. For me, being able to change the timezone would be nice as would backdating posts, and my sis would like to change her username. But no pressure!
Hey John, if you need help answering email, let me know. I could use the extra cash and I’m a quick learner.
The changing username thing could be a bit of a pain in some ways, though I can understand people wanting to do so.I once modded on a messageboard where one of the admins changed his username there without even saying anything:cue much confusion. It made me think that any site (not just forums, other kinds too including weblogs) which allows changing of usernames should have some feature which logs old names in a way that other users can see.
Perhaps there could be a small footnote in the public profile (“this user previously known as “abc123″ and “xyz789″“ or whatever) of anyone who’d changed their name? That way you’d avoid a deluge of emails from people confused that one of the sites they read was now called something different or worrying about why their Xanga friends seemed to have suddenly vanished.
Having it in the profile as well as the other categories of info would prevent your having to put it anywhere else on the page which might not work with the user’s overall design or skin.
I guess it’d have to be mentioned in the FAQ and maybe in any email updates which are sent out just to get people into the habit of checking profiles for this information once name changes become possible…
thanks again for all your hard work. happy thursday
thanks for the updates John!…and thanks for working on the Mac stuff!.. it’ll make my life easier… bah.. crazy mass PC users.. they just don’t konw what they’re missing
… mmm, could you not make anonomyous posting an option in the look and feel section or something? i know Livejournal does… but seeing as i’m completely non-technology friendly * i swear, i could look at a computer and it would blow up*, so i don’t know how complicated that would be, but i would REALLY enjoy having that option…
=m=
Very weird that you are generating HTML that is operating system specific. Would be nice if you generated clean HTML, and told us what you actually support, rather than supporting IE specific stuff (or so it seems… for instance using Netscape I can only do italics in comment boxes, not bold or underline. If I click on the Preview HTML link they show, but not after I do a submit.
(you watch, they will work this time!!!
)
Ah, underline did.. but not bold. That’s an improvement
It’s kinda frustrating how IE/Windows focused you are – and that if you don’t run that combo so many thing either don’t work or are funky.
I’m not complaining about the lack of the xtools editor mind you… If you provided it I’d be asking for some way to disable it. What I would like is if you could make the new weblog/edit weblog editing widget to be closer to the size of window that opens rather then the 11 lines of 33 charactors that you give us.
Oh, and archive on demand would be so cool!
I guess if I knew what Xangazon was I might care that it didn’t work.
Remember that Apple is a profitable computer company, one of very few last year.. and is one of the top three brands manufactured.. I think only outstripped by Dell. That’s millions of machines out there, not a small market.
All i want is somewhere i can write my thoughts..but thank you for so much more.
Yes, I am for the annoymous users being able to post. I think that would be an awesome tool.
can anyone please give me a site that have music codes please
Hi John, thanks for constantly improving xanga’s features! this is much appreciated.
I’m also all for anonymous commenting – this would be great.
Also noticed a bug (or i THINK it’s a bug) – when you go to an archive, the “previous” and “next” buttons don’t work. You get taken directly to the front page (most current entry). this makes it near impossible to find a previous entry if the reader doesn’t remember the exact date it was posted.
And on the Private site… how does one view/download all weblog archives? This doesn’t seem to be working either. would love to be able to save all my entries offline without having to set up a new e-mail address and subscribe.
