POISONED CASHEWS?
Did you know that the cashew nut comes from a family of trees related to poison ivy?
I didn’t know this, but the oil on cashew nut shells contains urushiol – the same chemical that’s coated on the surface of poison ivy leaves. So eating cashew nuts that have been improperly processed can cause your entire body to break out in poison ivy.
Which is my scientific way of saying: !%#%#$%, I will never eat cashews again for the rest of my life!!

ha! That is a bit of knowledge I didn’t need to know… *looks mournfully at the cashew can on my printer table* Ignorance is bliss man… well it was…
Oh, NOOOOO, of course cashews are – were- my favorites. Now I’m looking with raised eyebrow, maybe if I feed a few to my husband first . . .
I hope you feel better soon.
Aw, nuts!!
I dont understand why you shut some sites down for abuse…yet I can name off about 10 that continue to seriously harrass and abuse others that you have done absolutely NOTHING about!! I know you know who some of them are because youve been mailed by numerous people about them. Doesnt matter though…Im sure they’ll all just make up new names anyhow.
Isnt whats good for the goose…good for the gander too??
Im not really trying to rant here…I just honestly dont understand why some get preferential treatment.
Macadamia nuts. Didja know Dr. Atkins Diet suggests eating macadamia nuts to ward off cravings for carbohydrates? And did you know that macadamia nuts are the most frking expensive type of legumes there are?!?
Thanks for the heads up on cashews– i always liked that little bitty kernel thing it sometimes had on the top (on whole cashews, anyway).
Icky. But that’s only if the body can’t process it right, or doesn’t, right?
I see that yet again people are commenting on your site and going on and on about your procedure for closing sites down
I wish people had more sense…
EW! I will never eat another cashew! The things you don’t know…….
Hmm…well, I’ve been eating them for years…and nothings happened so far…so, I think I’ll just keep taking my chance with them…yep – I’m feeling brave today…besides, they are the only “nuts” I like..well, that’s not completely true…LMAO…RoseMary
you can forget the mangos too
An interesting tidbit of information. I never really liked cashews and now I have even more of an excuse.
I’ve been thinking…..if you REALLY like cashews, who cares if you break out (on the very small chance). I mean…isn’t life too short to worry about that?
Case in point…I grew up in Louisiana and I LOVE oysters. Any way you can make them…I love them. About 7 or 8 years ago, I developed an allergy to all bi-valves (of which oysters are). My mouth stings a little and itches when I ate them. It wasn’t necessarily painful….just VERY irritating.
You know what? I still eat them. All the time. My doctor friends say “Take a Benedryl” and I tell them to “take a flying leap” (not really) because I can deal with a little discomfort for having something I love a LOT. So, I say Cashews for Everyone! (except Dilbert up there who apparently never liked them)
hmm perhaps i was a bit too subtle.
i am covered in poison ivy right now. apparently i ate a bad batch…
Nuts! would be the proper term.
*shoves cashews in her mouth like there’s no tomorrow*
What,me worry?
Cool! Thanks for the info. Can’t wait to tell hubby, he loves cashews.
FYI, the “poison ivy” rash is nothing more than contact dermititis. Many things can cause it for many people (spoken by one who has skin that is irritated by many chemical concoctions.)
All in all, nuts are quite good for you, unless they have been processed a way to make them bad for you, or you consume in excess.
Covered in poison ivy!? OUCH.. I wonder.. what are the chances for a nice lil law suit? I mean.. if someone can sure McDonalds cause their coffee is hot.. surely you can sue for a painfully itchy rash over your entire person.. *shudders at exactly what entire person means* eeps! Soak in a bath with a good amount of baking soda poured in.. that can help alleviate the itchies.. Get well soon! And DON’T scratch!
Geez John….I didn’t realize you were actually afflicted with said condition! Sorry to hear that.
I’d like to make a motion that the title of this blog be removed and changed to “Itchy Nuts”. That is all.
the interesting thing with cashew nuts are, the chemical doesn’t cause a rash until it leaves your body. basically, you get poison ivy everywhere that you sweat.
anyway, i’ve done a bit more research and the danger lies mostly in roasted cashew nuts. that’s because they are roasted in their own oil, which can sometimes get corrupted with the urushiol chemical.
*scratching sympathetically*
well, obviously the problem here is not cashews, but sweat. Don’t sweat!
hahahaha oh GOD William! Itchy Nuts!!! that along with Sean’s suggestion of not sweating.. reminds me of the S-N-L skit.. Shweddy Balls, the one with the Christmas treats. That was probably one of the funniest skits I have seen..well both Delicious Dish skits featuring Pete Schweddy.. the 2nd one was about his Schweddy Weiner! hahaha Good times..
WOW! Thanks for the much NOT needed info. I love cashews. Is that my self-distructive nature showing through??
I am very allergic to poison ivy (even english ivy) but I’ve eaten cashews for many years without any problem. I don’t think there is a problem with them being inproperly processed very often. I know I will continue to enjoy them.
Poor John! I just bought a bag of cashews today (non-roasted…Whew!!!) and ate them all. It’s a small bag. They are my favorite. So, maybe, since I don’t sweat unless it’s hot where I am or I’m doing something physical to make myself sweat, then I should be o.k.??? I don’t know if I can give them up totally. Well, maybe only in the summer. Macadamian nuts are good…I love them in cookies. Yum! Yeah, to bad they are so expensive. Hope you feel better soon. {{{John}}}
Oh gosh! Sorry to hear that, John. Hope you feel better soon!
I’m not a big cashew fan myself, but I like nuts in general.
I am a premium-paying member and I feel you have shut down some sites in a very unfair way….just because you are a owner does not mean you can do anything according to your whims…plse do some investigations likes what some good americans do unless you are not one….I am disappointed in you, man….
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! oh well … macadamias r betta hehe … nice profile pic
Lucky me for not liking cashew (or any other kind of) nuts…
If you try hard enough, I’m sure you could come up with both a good and bad reason for eating/not eating any and everything. The ultimate goody-goodies have a tendency toward obesity while the ultimate baddy-baddies tend toward anorexia.
john, here’s hope: I’m working on a sweat-abatement pill that will prevent you from sweating until the cashews are metabolically inert. If successful, I will come out with a whole new line of “No Sweat Cashews”
~Looking at notforprophet’s comment….and rolling my eyes~…. He scares me….. John, hope you feel better…Have a itch free weekend…
RoseMary
~lol~ . I personally love cashews .. never had a bad batch ~knocks on wood~ … they are some of my favorite nuts … they coincide with some people I know ~evil grin~ … enjoy the weekend John
~waves~
*stifled snort*
I’m sorry John, I really am……….hope your nuts and stuff cease to itch soon.
*louder snort*
yowch!
John, I’m sorry I got angry about taking Someone off of here, it’s just he was a pretty close online friend, and it hurt me to see he wasn’t getting fair treatment. Or rather, he didn’t tell me why he wasn’t getting fair treatment… I thought you were just being unfair I guess. But I understand now… I do still miss him though.
Julia
Oh my!! I wonder if that could be a cause for swelling hands on my youngest for no apparent reason?
hang in there, man. Hope you feel better today.
*Guzentheit!
