  • Bad Xangan?

I came across an interesting comment:

I’ve noticed that those members of the xanga
team I’m subscribed to almost never update their blogs anymore,
although some of them pulse quite often. That has bothered me because
it sends a message that blogging is no longer very important to the
people who run the blogging community.”

I’m not saying this comment is necessarily about me (and I like the person who wrote it, so please don’t think I am calling them out!).  But it got me thinking.

I am definitely blogging less and pulsing more lately.  I guess it’s been harder to find time to blog since I got married a few years ago!  That said, I still subscribe to tons of blogs, and comment a whole bunch.  I try to be a good Xangan!  But the comment got me thinking, and I think the commenter has a fair point – I have been blogging less.

    Am I a bad Xangan?

  • No,not a bad Xangan….a busy one .

But I do miss your posts!

  • NO! I’m pretty sure that’s not what the commenter meant.

  • If a good Xangan means someone who blogs a lot, then I suppose that would make you a bad Xangan. But, you have a job that takes up your time, and blogging takes time.  The people who blog are generally people who have jobs that don’t take up a lot of their time.

If the Xanga team members are too busy to blog, I guess they’re “bad Xangans,” but they get a pass because they allow people like me to be “good Xangans!”

  • You’re an awful, horrible Xangan!!!  jk.  Anyhow, I haven’t ever pulsed…and I’m just recently getting back to blogging.  So, you’re better than I have been. :D   And since I’m awesome, that makes you super awesome.  I know, I am smoking some good stuff, eh?  Full of myself. ;) haha

  • Of course yuor not a bad Xangan. Being busy and not being able to blog is different than NOT blogging because you don’t want to.

if that really feel guilty about it, im sure u can find SOME time to log on and blog…

  • bad John bad

  • yes.

  • Not bad at all… Just busy…

I also don’t mind seeing your pulses, or everyone elses, it kind of feels like your letting us know you haven’t forgotten us. lol

I do miss your posts though. Maybe you could squeeze one a month in.

  • you are a bad xangan because this wasn’t a real post either.

  • I don’t think so; you’re busy.

  • That comment was made on my site.  I am touched you still read it.

I would imagine you are spending all of your time with xanga related stuff instead of blogging so it doesn’t make you a bad xangan.

I think you update more than any other member of the xanga team.

  • All I will say is that I miss your posts.

  • @TheTheologiansCafe - I read all of your posts, and am a big fan of your site!  I was just on your Xanga because I am writing a post for TheXangaTeam, and I was linking to one of your posts.

  • just be sure to set the tone. and PLEASE, don’t ever let your staff get too partisan political. i’m all for a free exchange of ideas but let them do it elsewhere, not as xanga staff. unless you offer fair representation on both sides… but who is going to monitor that?

part of the reason i’m GLAD for facebook is that it weeded out people who are more into the social networking aspect and less into getting their IDEAS out there via blogging.

so while numbers is great, it’s people who like to blog that have stuck around.

  • Your cool with me…and I know you’ve been posting on datingish too…
    so…it’s all good.

  • No you’re not bad at all. If anything, you’re a cool xangan

  • @slamjoe - Hmm, what do you mean about staff getting partisan?  Feel free to message me with details, if you’d prefer that over a public comment.  Thanks!

  • I think that happens to everyone sooner or later.  We start hot’n heavy . . . then slowly the novelty wears off . . . then life/work gets in the way . . . and we try to stay up w/it . . . some times it’s easier than others.

And those who have a huge following (I’m a fan of seedsower), I imagine it’s hard to stay up on things and constantly apease the crowd.

  • Well in all honesty, I really hate it when people Xangans don’t blog as often as they used to. I hate Xanga breaks so much. But I guess everybody needs a break. I, myself, took some Xanga breaks too. But it’s just sad for me, not seeingmy friends around. It’s just so sad.

  • no. personally i think you guys should take 20 minutes out of a xanga week (paid of course) to throw up a quick blog. it would appease the person in question at least.

  • I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again (and again): The fact that you actually use the site and we have unfiltered access to you is pretty cool.  You have to look hard to find another website or online community like that.

  • life happens and sometimes it is eaiser to pulse, as I’ve been doing lately, rather than take the time to write a blog.

  • Well, John… I think you’ve taken the first step in recovery by recognizing that you have a problem…

    Just kidding!

Don’t worry about it, John!  When you have time, you’ll post again!  You’re a busy guy!

  • We blog but on our secret xanga pages.

  • We all get busy. I do miss people actually posting blogs but I understand that time is at a premium and pulsing is a good way to get something quickly out.

  • You’re not a bad Xangan.   What and when you blog is up to you.  I do wish people (including myself) would blog more often.  But I know everyone is probably juggling a lot of stuff.  Even when you don’t blog, I do see your pulses and recommendations.

  • Bad John!  No ice cream for you!

  • No, you just have your priorities straight.  Blogging shouldn’t be an obligation.  It should be a delight.

  • Humm, I don’t know what pulsing is, but it sounds painful. Personally, I’ve been a bad xangian because i haven’t been blogging period.  A few years ago I roped a bunch of friends into this site, and made friends on the site, then left them hanging. Now they’ve moved on to other web pages, but I’m still here.  I feel bad about that, it was a nice connection that got lost.  For that I feel a little guilty.

  • I think a bad Xangan is someone who doesn’t contribute to the good and welfare of Xanga.  I think it doesn’t necessarily have to do with someone who blogs often because (the following is my opinion only) a person can submit an entry everyday and not say anything.  That person has contributed nothing to the community (doesn’t mean that person needs to) and in my opinion, no one worth reading/subscribing.

On the other hand there are people who blog when they can and write awesome reads.  And then there are those who work behind the scenes to allow us to have a better community to blog in.  If those people are considered bad Xangans, then shame on the people who think that.

    -ray leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • the fact you have so much response to this shows you’re not a bad xangan. lol.

  • @TheTheologiansCafe - maybe you should tell John your secrets on how on married man (and in your case, a father of 3too) can still find time to blog a lot. A. LOT.

  • John.  You ARE Xanga.  It doesnt matter if you dont blog so frequently.  Blogging isnt about who can blog the most.  It’s all about the content, baby.  http://www.xanga.com/moshpanda  I’d rather read two blog entries from this guy every year than read shitty “here’s how my day went” blog posts every single day.

  • I really do wish you’d come back, John. We used to have something so special . . .

  • xanga is made of blogs, pulses, commenters, friendships, and those out for the numbers. it’s perfectly fine to explore pulses for a while. it’s fine to quit both blogging AND pulsing for awhile and just cruise through the neighborhood commenting. what counts is you are still here. when it’s time for a blog, it will come out. ~sarina

  • i say its called LIFE.  if you have a full one its often hard to blog =)  but i too have though that blogging in general seems to have lost a little steam everywhere.  but i think its still the future of everything to come =) id die without a blog hhahah its def a gen x and y and so on thing.  blog is so much better too when people have interesting things to say.

  • that’s right start blogging!!! giddy up!  haha

  • Xangan – is that a nationality?

  • you ARE xanga john. how can you be a bad xangan? you set this up for the people. and you are working! on xanga at that! haha..i guess you are in this weird position. blogging is your job, and when you dont blog, you are still working.

  • quality and quantity makes a good xangan.

  • no because you have a community to run and your own life! who has time to blog when they have their own company? :)

  • Your lack of blogging makes me sick! Sick I tell you!

  • you’re working on the best blogging site ever, so i can’t complain… : P

  • I’ve been a bad girl too. HMMMM.

  • No you are not a bad Xangan.

You are too busy trying to make Xanga the number #1 in the Internet blogging community with the rest of the Xanga team.

  • No, you post when you have something to say !

  • yeah u are a busy xanagan! ehehe
i try to update as much as i can too, but its a little tough
cuz u know i just graduated college, moved in with my bf and now focused on looking for a job. but i still do read peoples blogs and comment once in awhile when i have time.

  • Nah, you’re not a bad Xangan.  We all get busy and need time to sort things through.  I just came off a month absence from Xanga and I don’t think I’m a bad Xangan!  You’re doing good, come to think of it. I’ve found the number one killer of a person’s blog is relationships.  Someone blogs everyday until they get a boy/girlfriend or married and then nothing.   Like blogging took the place of a bf/gf.  But you got married and still continue to blog.

John….you’re breaking barriers here, setting precidents.

  • When in doubt, post an LOLcat. That would make you a very typical xangan, at least. :P

  • No it doesn’t but you could update your blog a bit more often. They dont have to be terribly involved blogs, even a brief update is good.

  • What is pulse anyway

  • We just miss you!!

  • he/she beat me to my next post! “where have allllll the bloggings gone…” (sung to “where have all the flowers gone”)

  • As long as Xanga is up and running and being updated and whatnot, we shouldn’t complain too much. But it is nice to see what y’all are up to.

  • Terrible. jk

  • I’m a bad Xangan too

  • Some Xangans just want to get the best of your fine writing. but listen, like all good writers, the best writers need pulse breaks. Better to have pulse than nothing at all.

  • I don’t think you are “bad”. I know alot of xangans who really do want to update their xangas, but they can’t find the time. I think if something important came up, they would.

  • me too….sadness. sometimes life takes over and xanga gets put to the side….we all know you still love xanga.

  • you maintain Xanga…isn’t that why we all blog here?

  • yea people dont seem to be blogging as much. maybe cuz they go off on other tangents like facebook. i have been on that more….i’m sure xanga doesnt wanna hear that….it’s unfortunate, huh? i guess with pulses, it’s easier to just say something real quick!

  • nah commenting is important!

  • Sounds like you’re human!

  • I think it’s just the march of technology.  I find myself more prone to just leaving up the anecdotes for the day up as my status in gchat or facebook rather than writing a full blown blog these days.  I don’t know if it’s better or worse, but … it’s what happens more and more now.

  • I have been blogging less, too.

No we are not bad Xangans. We have so many things going on in our life; you and your marriage, me and college.

Sometimes I am away from my computer and think, “I should blog about this later” and never get around to it.

Now that I am here , I should go blog. Glad you brought this issue up.

  • I have no idea because I didn’t really come around to your place till after you started multitasking and making things like Momaroo and Revelife and that dating one…whatever it is called.  And I think I’ve only gotten one or two comments out of you ever.  However, that does not make you a bad xanagan.  That just means we aren’t best buddies.  I read your stuff and comment when I have something to say and if you read mine… well you must be insanely bored because I’ve had nothing much to say lately except I’ve got peaches coming out my ears.  You get a free pass.

  • No, definitely not.  I think that we all get busy, and life get’s crazy; you’re still here and participating.  There’s no set criterion for being a “good” blogger, anyway.

  • I don’t think it makes you a bad Xangan, because you work on Xanga things and fix little problems here and there.  I do enjoy reading your entries but I underdstand you’re married and Xanga is your job,  so you can’t update all the time.

Just don’t quit updating like a few of you have,  we’d miss you.

  • it doesn’t make you a bad xanga, no. you’re at least trying to help the xanga blogging community become a better place. plus, not everyone can dedicate their life to blogging day in and day out. it does take time, and time is precious these days, it can’t be wasted.

being busy does not mean being a bad xangan.

  • If xanga wasn’t so busy adding so much other stuff maybe you would have time to blog?

  • If I had a wife, I wouldn’t even BE blogging period. Blog when you feel like! It’s your Xanga!

  • Not a bad Xangan at all. Blogging doesn’t need to become something you have to do to make people happy. It should be something you do for fun, when you want to.

  • It doesn’t make you a bad xangan, but it would be nice to hear from you a bit more.

  • hey it’s your site. so watever floats ur boat. if you like pulse, then thats up to you.

as for me, i rarely pulse. i am too verbose. matter of fact, most of my readers probably wish there was a 3,000 word limit on blogs so i’d be able to control myself….

  • no you’re just more busy now but at least you still do it

  • you’s aight. haha…
it’s not that bloggin is less important. it’s hard to find time.
even I find it harder to blog now that i have a baby.

but when i haven’t blogged in a while i think about my page constantly.

    me = dork

  • some people just get a little bitter when they miss someone.  and sometimes they take it personally and forget that everyone is busy and it’s not because xyz “is unimportant.”

i can believe anyone would ever accuse you of being a bad xangan…. but if i said i didn’t miss your posts too, i’d be lying.

  • You’re a bad Xangan John…

    But a great Kangaroo!

    Thank you.

  • For what it is worth, Pulse makes Xanga just another Facebook kind of site. I prefer a blogger site.  I’ve tried My Space, Facebook,  Plaxo among others.  I cancelled My Space, Facebook and use Plaxo only for  its original intended purpose.  Now Xanga is trying to keep up with the latest trends in social  networking and Pulse is the current hot item.  If I could figure  it out, I would block all Pulse listing on my Xanga home  page. The  only way I can reduce the clutter is to unsubscribe.  I do not want to unsubscribe from John because I’ve enjoyed the thoughts and blogs.  However, I ignore the Pulses and as you say, you are doing more and more of that so I likely will drop my subscription from your Xanga site.

  • @eaglegrafix - Sure, ok.  You are under no obligation to sub to me!

  • @john - Oh I know, John, but I do like your longer musings and provocative questions on your blogs.

  • @eaglegrafix - Feel free to visit my weblog from time to time!  You don’t have to sub to me to see those…

  • i don’t know about this.. i mean i would rather write nothing at all if it meant writing thing horrible.  i think it’s okay if you have nothing to say but most likey you won’t have nothing to say one day maybe two days in a roll but not for a whole month… just saying.

  • I blog when I have something to say.  I also blog with a challenge group which makes it easier as you have a subject to work on.  I can’t do everything and don’t expect anyone else to either.  A good marriage takes time and commitment to either party if it’s to work.  I think a good marriage can’t come after everything else.

A question as I have not found an answer:  I have given up trying to figure out how to have a link in my comments for editing them for 15 minutes. Some sites seem to have the option and others don’t. the xanga help file for comments still reads:

    ——————————————————————————————————————
Can I edit or delete the comments that I’ve left on other Xanga sites?

All comments are final… so be careful!

I think its a great option and would like it but can’t find a setting or any direction.

    Thanks, Becca

  • i kinda hate pulses. it’s like the cheater pussy-out way.

  • @zontiago - Ha ok… heh, are short comments exempt from your hateration?

  • hahaha…. comments always have, and always will be welcome. =)

  • we all slack from time to time its only natural i aggree with what bryan7032103 said above 7-8 comments: “Being busy and not being able to blog is different than NOT blogging because you don’t want to.” dont beat yourself up about it hehe precission is unnatural

  • It’s been a week, John. A week…

  • @wherethefishlives - omg… you nag better than my mom.

    wait, r u my mom?

  • @john - That’s absurd – I’m not your mother! But I did pack your lunch, and it should be FedExed to you by Monday.

  • No, not at all, you are not a bad xangan! If you don’t have time, you don’t have time. This is a hobby, not your life (well for most people lol). You still comment and stuff, and update pulse so we know you are alive, it’s cool!

  • afraid so lol
    but it’s ok
    because you’re too busy

  • hmm. Glad to know you are reading John. I don’t think it makes you a bad xangan if you don’t blog as regularly. The fact that you comment and read other people’s blog means that you still participate in the discussion in some way. I think this is just people’s way of saying they miss your writing.

    Life happens though.

  • John,

I’m having alot of problems with my Xanga site. I think it might be due to the newest version of IE i uploaded. I cannot write messages, see my picture file, ext.

  • i am sure you have a good amount of ppl subscribed to you and there is a reason for that… and that reason is not because a majority of us still believe that the word “xanga” is actually an alien word bestowed upon humankind that will unlock superhuman abilities in the not so distant future, and we are just waiting for you to tell when when that day is, but because its so read your blog entries when it happens!

  • You’re horrible.  Blaming it on your marriage!!? Horrible… horrible man.

  • RYC: John, thanks for the rec! You’re the best and your comment made me blush!
    Thanks again :)

  • I pulse more too, its easier for the busy Xangan.

  • John,
I don’t think you are a bad Xangan.  Personally I am surprised that you all still maintain a personal blog at all.
I could imagine how many blog messages you get in one day wanting trivial things.  I know I have asked you questions and you have been prompt about answering them.
I think I miss the “hello” mails though.  Does that make you a bad person?? No. You have a job, and it is critical for you to focus on that job for us to have a great place to blog and express ourselves.
I miss the personal part of xanga but I am happy just being on here.
I hope you and the entire team have a great weekend and thank you.
Thank you to all the team for being here for us, to help us and keep this place going.
Be well and God bless you

  • what do you mainly use your computer for?
this is a follow up to your pulse regarding you getting mad at vista.
i don’t know anything about linux except that it’s programmer and open source based, so u can change a lot of things if u know about it.
i’ve been using a mac for about a year now and i love the audio/video software navigation and set up.  i can see all the open windows and programs  behind the editing software.  say if i’m editing a 250 x 250 JPG file, only that picture and the toolbars are taking up screen space.  behind the pic and toolbars i can simplly click on my open browser or mp3 player behind it whereas [last i remember] with pc based photoshop, i have to minimize photoshop… but it mite’ve changed?

and another essential feature is the comfortness of keyboard shortcuts.  i’m heavy on the shortcuts so i realized that after using a mac, using pc’s ctrl shortcuts actually felt painful because i had to reach with my pinky finger to hit ctrl whereas the mac, i just use my thumb to press the apple button [beside the space bar].

that’s just my two cents on two mac pluses.  you’ll totally get shafted on some of the software and games tho, but you’ll get used to it once u buy the software to switch between OS’s.

  • maybe you have just become a unregistered 527 ?

  • I just wanted to comment and say thanks for all you do!  Xanga is great, and without it the internet would be pretty sad!  Thanks again!

  • MAYBE the real reason people stopped blogging is because all the biblehumping xanganazis running around BANNING people for no reason whatsoever

  • no man, not bad.  The creator can not be bad, right?

  • people have alot of stuff going on. unless you carry a laptop around with you 24/7 your bound to slow down or even quit for a while. i’ve had it happen at times. no big whoop.

  • Ha ha ha, The only bad xangan out there, is the one that decided “Revelife” needs to be constantly on the front page, and the “My addiction to porn: one christian womans struggle” was allowed to be taken seriously! She wasn’t even addicted. That whole post was rubbish. I am so glad I dont think people go to hell for masturbating, because that post alludes to that… WOW!

  • john you are not a bad xangan you just have a lot going on with ur life right now i hope everything is good with you right now.

  • hi john. i am inviting you to check out my current blog. it’s more of an experiment than a post.

  • John I have emailed tech support several times with no answer as usual. First I could not read my comments for the last few days now no one using ie can read my site. Please help. Judi

  • Definitely.  Not blogging on a blogging site is like not drinking yourself into a coma at an open bar.  Its un-American!

  • this is an ancient post. bad xangan, you.

  • xanga team should at least use their own product, no?

  • If you don’t have a true badge you’re not a good Xangan.

  • noooo

  • this is silly.
