My Eye
I woke up last Wednesday, and my right eye felt slightly weird – like something was in it. I didn’t look at it until after lunch, at which point I noticed that the corner of my eye was pretty bloodshot. You can’t see it too much if you look at me straight-on, so here’s a pic of me looking to the side to demonstrate:
Five days (and a bunch of Visine) later, it still feels like I have something in my eye. So I googled the symptoms, and WrongDiagnosis.com told me there are seven possible reasons my eye could feel like this:
I definitely don’t have “pink eye”, as I’ve had that many times in the past and this feels different. None of the other possible diseases sounds all that bad and since it’s only in one eye, I’m going to wait a few days before seeing the doctor.
I guess I have two questions:
- Is anyone an eye doctor who can tell me if my eye is about to fall out?
- Does anyone else ever diagnose themselves like this using the Internet?

web md?
I’ve had that sort of sensation before, where it feels like there’s a particle there, but there isn’t. I’m no doctor, but it could be that something once got in there that was irritant or caused an allergic reaction, and only needed to be in there for a short time to cause your eye to be bloodshot. That’s merely a guess, though.
However, I might just recommend Visine or Clear-Eyes and hope it goes away. If you don’t think that’ll work, maybe a visit to the doctor is in order after all.
You definitely need to see a doctor, John. Yes, I have researched maladies on the Internet, but I leave the true diagnosing to a medical professional.
I research all my ailments on the internet, but only to sound more knowledgeable when I go to the doctor, not as a replacement for going to the doctor. Do you wear contacts?
This *exact* thing happened to me about three weeks ago. I left it alone, and it cleared up in about 6 days – still, I should have probably seen a doctor, and so should you.
i have searched online – but it usually leads me to go see the doctor.
dude, i suggest you go see a doctor(!!!)
you have nice eye lashes. ^_^
But you should see a doctor.
I haven’t diagnose myself with the internet but I looked up definetions and symoptoms of medical stuff.
That does really look bad. and i’m in agreement with everyone else that you should probably see a doctor some time soon.
you know, i never self diagnose from online material. i may ask friends but never just check stuff out online. lol it worries me or something.
Maybe it is an alien larva.
I believe it’s called stress.
Soo thats what you eye looks like O_O
to address some of the questions above: i have been using visine, and i don’t wear contacts. i did get lasik surgery a few years ago though. also, i breed and raise alien larva at home… good point, should’ve mentioned that.
if it doesn’t get better soon, i will go to the doctor. i am not rubbing my eyes and it doesn’t itch – if the eye wasn’t red, i would barely even notice it. if it’s not better by tomorrow though, i’ll make an appt.
If this does not clear up by next week, go to the doctor.
I think you’re problem is “not enough sleep”.
Mixed with spending hours upon hours on the internet.
:’/
if it was not enough sleep, wouldn’t both my eyes be bloodshot? this is only impacting my right eye…
Yeah, I hear a mixture of ammonia and root beer typically causes larvae to leave their flesh burrow. Or maybe it was dig deeper into the body… Huh – maybe you shouldn’t try that remedy.
i say – if you wake up in the morning – and it’s still there – go to the doctor – the sooner you know what it is – the less stressed out you’ll be and all that stuff… of course, unless you want more sympathy – then wait til you get 100 comments or eprops! haha
I’m not a doctor, however I can diagnose your eye problem as “gross”.
Hope that helps!
Well, if you’re wrong, can you deal with being blind in one eye? GO to the DR!
Somehow maybe you straind your eye? Cough or lift something heavy?
Lol at Mama Dred2.
I’ve had things stuck in my eye before and been able to remove them by flushing the eye under a running faucet for a few minutes while blinking and shifting it in its socket, not terribly comfortable but it did the trick. Of course consult your doctor before trying such a stunt…
nothing to play with! my mother in law is deaf, she was deaf as an infant due to illness, and she just recently lost an eye to a tumor and now has a glass eye. So, she has no hearing and only one eye, that totally blows. GO TO THE DOC.
John, do you also feel tightness in your chest?
I did some research online, and that would indeed symptomatic of alien larva, specifically a so-called Facehugger.
As that article notes, if a Facehugger “[grips] its long, bony finger-like legs around [your] head and [wraps] its tail around [your] neck”, watch out! If you gasp for breath, “the facehugger will insert a tube-like proboscis … down [your] throat … inserting an [alien] embryo into the chest cavity.”
So it could be that. If so, just wait a few days, and you will no longer feel pain.
if it’s something important like my eyes, I’d goto the doctor right away. I’d especially go since I had lasik too.
visual health is very fragile . . . I’d see a pro . . . I self diagnosed myself w/carpal tunnel mid last year, but I was wrong (yeeayy me) cuz I’ve found an icky tasting home-made concoction that drinking it daily makes almost all aches’n pains go away and the pain in my arm is about 95% better than it was . . . I’m giving it time to see if it goes away 100% in a month or so.
1. No
2. No – well, I think it works for some things and may help you have an intelligent conversation with your doctor.
Go see your doctor, hopefully it’s just something mild that can be taken care of quickly. Maybe it’s something with your tear duct gland? (that’s just a wild ass guess)
yep… i always diagnose myself on the web, but I think that needs to be checked up on.
Burst blood vessles from stress. I have cronically dry eyes, and this happens quite often. It’s mostly just annoying. Have you gone to a real doctor?
Yes, we diag ourselves (hubby was trained as an EMT), but rarely w/o professional backing. We have a good friend who is a optometrist… do you wear contacts? You could have a bacterial infection in there and that’s nothing to play with… they an cause damage to cause blindness (that happened to our daughter–and it looked similar to yours–but fortunately she didn’t have permanent damage.) Don’t play with that ~ get thee to the eye doc!
Yeah, but Bob, the thing about Facehuggers, is it would be pretty hard for him to not notice it. Though he could have been drunk or someth’. One of its legs could have pricked his eye at some point.
I hate going to the doc’s so if I feel weird I just let it go till I look like your eye…..or it could be a stye??<—spelled wrong
I did have something like that and got some otc meds a goopy mess but it worked
Is it wrong that I came to your site, simply to get a glimpse of the heinous eye?
Ok, ok… it’s really not that bad. (I only involuntarily shuttered for a moment)
I hope it gets better soon!
Look very closely; r all ur fingers there? Aah Visine works best with eyes open! Always wash well after… Or maybe there’s a new girl @ the office; that could do it!;~)
It’s only in one eye, so I guess it isn’t straight fatigue. I’ve never used the internet to diagnose myself – too lazy. And hmm… it sounds to me like you have ocular dystopia mylin, which is something I just made up and doesn’t actually exist. Probably.
I search on the web all the time for medical diagnosis and remedies. And it’s funny that you mentioned it and posted a picture of your eye. I almost did the same thing this weekend!
do you wear contacts? sounds like you scratched your cornea. happened to me once: READ
Web MD, Mayo Clinic Symptoms….etc. Would take care of that eye….sight is a precious gift!
I use the web to diagnose my husband who is affraid of doctors. *Cough baby Cough*
It’s maybe a broken blood vessel, maybe an allergy? if it really feels like there is something in there it might be a cut, or maybe something really is in your eye
Maybe there’s something in your eye.
Cheers!
the exact same thing happened to my dad~! the dr. said a small blood vessel burst and tha tthere wasn’t anything he could do but just wait it out. i’d say go to a dr. though just to make sure it isn’t anything serious. i get worried when things happen to such an important part of your body~ you have to see!!
you’re a goner.
i used webmd when my eye was hurting. turned out i had a stye, and it cleared up once i stopped wearing contacts for a week, and kept the area clean.
just from your photo, it looks very similar to something my dad had once. he was due for an eye checkup with the optometrist anyways, so he asked him if anything looked wrong, and it happened to be just ruptured vessels around just one eye… stress, fatigue, maybe physical as well as psychological. my dad thought something was in his eyes too, felt weird. it could be something, it could be anything, or nothing at all. so maybe you should see a doctor.. or at least an optometrist who could take a closer look, if you happen to need a new pair of glasses or something.
are you stressed?
go to the doctor
allergies?
GO TO THE DR !!!!
DONT MESS WITHT THE EYES>
5 DAYS IS TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LONG!!!
i’ve gotten eye things like that, but the longest was for maybe 3 days. you should definitely go see an eye doctor asap. you might need some kind of antibiotic solution. i’ve used webmd to self diagnose, and it was really helpful to ask the right questions when i’m at the doctors ofc
I’m not an expert, but I did have something similar to that a couple of months ago. My advice: Use lots of Visine and don’t strain your eyes too much. If it doesn’t go away/show signs of improvement in a day or so, go see a doctor.
i diagnosed myself using your selected site amongst others.
I knew a girl whose eye was really bothering her and she ended up pulling one of her hairs out of it.. it was at least a foot and a half long. Gross eh?
If it keeps getting worse I would get there sooner. I wouldn’t put going to the doctors off for too long because it’s your eye and eyes just so happen to be quite handy.
perhaps a blown blood vessel?
hope things clear up!
-jen-
dunno if someone suggested it but maybe you scratched your cornea by mistake and it just needs time to heal. or you should refer to “house” and ask that strange doctor dude.
That looks nasty! If I were you, I’d see a doctor – just in case.
And yes – I’ve tried to diagnose myself using WebMD many times…
Go find a doctor. Probably just a build-up of something.
Don’t compromise on your vision. It’s too important to let it slip by, for gosh sakes if you have insurance go see a doctor! I’m sure working for xanga will get you the health benefits hook up.
gross!~! go to teh eye doctor~!
I just have to say ewwww.
oh geez, i’ve seen that before. dunno what it is but could be a possible artery rupture. i say go see a doc NOW! what is it with Asians and always “waiting it out”? .. cuz i do that too =X
you have pretty eyes hahah! jp i hope you eye gets well soon! and yah see the doctor soon if it doesnt clear up!
It could be anything from you rubbing it to your blood pressure.
You really should make an appointment.
(I used to work for an optician.)
most of the doctors i know don’t like people researching symptoms online cause it scares the crap out of their patients. but i’m with sorjai, don’t mess with your eyes, go see a doctor…it’s been 5 days already.
anyhow…when i had something similar, i itched the crap out of it until my eye got blistered and the white part of my eye puffed up so bad my pupils looked like they were sinking in. The doc told me in the end that the cause was a scratch on my eye (caused by whatever), and i just made it worse buy rubbing it with my hand.
Hec yes man. Xanga rules! Hmm, that theme looks familiar…lol ~Josh
you might have allergies. once i had goop coming out of my eye and i thought i had pink eye. but it turned out to just be allergies. went away with allergy medication!
could be a busted blood vessel. I think a doctor visit should be made as well.
Daft man get to the Doctor…pronto!
google is my #1 source for diagnosis of anything and everything. i NEVER go to the doctors. i probably should start using them more often though.
Fungus.
A friend of mine once had that same problem in his right eye. After five days of waiting it out, he died.
You’re screwed.
“feels like there’s something in it”
That sounds a lot like a stye.
Wow you should definately see a doctor my mom had that problem and it was like some sort of skin growing in the eye…she needed a bunch of drops and stuff to get rid of it….don’t mess with your eyes!
Greetings from the Sticks,
Hey John, well first off people’s eyes don’t just usually fall out without a little help. I’m not a doctor but I know this from personal experience. If I were that concerned with it I’d drag out my yellow pages and call up the first optometrist I found, or do what we do in Ohio…go to Walmart. At least here in Ohio our Walmart have Optometrists in them.
I’ve diagnosed myself this way many times, and am usually correct. My body and I are on pretty good speaking terms. It knows when to listen to me. So it does. But seriously though, go see a doctor it could just be allergies or hay fever or something. Hopefully there’s nothing in it.
Ruth Ann.
You eye is going to fall out…
89.com
No I do not use the internet to diagnose. Interpret findings maybe.
You may have scratched your eyeball some way. Visine isn’t what you need, an optician or opthamalogist is. Eyes are too precious to mess with!
My diagnosis is allergies!! I have had a feeling of something in my eye and it is annoying. Hope it feels better soon.
RYC: No it’s not better ~falls over in frustration~ LOL. When I log on I see my old ugly green page. Maybe I’m loggin on from the wrong spot? Where is everyone else logging on from? Is this page only visible in public view? If I’m on my private site do I see the old layout?
I have it all the time, it’s probably just allergy eye– it is spring, and maybe you got some pollen or something in there. You could have scratched your eye in your sleep or something, i have done that as well. I wouldn’t see a doctor unless you notice it getting worse, usually things like that heal on their own, unless your a firm believer in taking meds for every possible ache and pain. lol.
I have no clue, but I do think your eye is a nice one despite the, uh… bloodshotness.
My friend Colleen nearly saved her own life by googling her symptoms because she was losing an absurd amount of weight even though she was eating… it turned out to be Celiac disease, and her demanding the test saved her a lot of hassle.
I hope you’re feeling better now, which I highly doubt, because I had that once and I personally had to wait 2 months before it turned back to normal… Good luck!!
looks like you burst a blood vessel in your eye, should clear up in a few days.
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001616.htm
he’s a photographer. does fashion photography and some porn stuff too, hahaha
Ew. Maybe it’s just allergies? i dunno. I am not a doctor, obviously. My elbow has been hurting for 2 weeks now and I haven’t gone to the doctor nor checked online. :shrugs: Hopefully, my arm won’t fall off.
that just looks like a blood vessel that burst
sorry about ur eye. i hope it’s better. i know i can totally relate i have had probs w/ eyes. when i was a baby i had a tumor in my eye but u can’t tell it was ever there now.
Maybe you do have something in it?
I bet your eye would get better if you stopped letting all those ninjas kick you in it. I mean, geez, come on John! Common sense here, common sense.
web diagnosis is a college students best friend .. our school nurse is stupid sometimes god bless her lol…
i give health issues some time to heal then, go to an actual doctor (which I end up rarely needing to do)
Wouldn’t you just love to walk around tell people you have Map-dot-fingerprint dystrophy?
Yeah, I usually use the net to diagnos something because I can’t be asked to make an appointment and see a doctor who would look at me for 5 minutes, prescribe me something I’ve never heard of and would have to purchase and boot me out the door. I figured out I had sinusitis once just by looking online. I should have gone to the doctor for that as it was an infection that required antibiotics, but I was in a foreign country and couldn’t afford such medication. Fortunately, it went away on it’s own.
Three words–Doctor…SEE ONE. The truth is you can’t diagnose from the internet or WebMD. That requires an examination. I’ve had pink eye too and you could still have it. Or it could be an allergy. You won’t know until you see a doctor.
is it better??
I’m more likely to diagnose (and treat) myself than I am to go to a doctor, and did that before I ever had access to the internet.
I’m not an eye doctor, but my eyes have looked like yours before (one at a time, as with yours) due to allergies.
I think that a lot of hypochondriacs use the internet to find out what they have.
You are correct – that is not pink eye. My diagnosis is allergies. I love the internet – with a little time, and a basic understanding of the human body, the average person can diagnose him/herself relatively accurately.
If the irritation does not go away by Wednesday or Thursday, see a doctor. It does not have to be an opthamologist – though you may get sent there. The other possibility is that you have scratched your cornea. It truly doesn’t look like an infection – allergies or a scratched cornea are much more likely.
An untreated scratched cornea could lead to an infection or pink eye, which you will not want to mess with.
maybe you just had a blood vessel burst or something.. =.. but i dont’ think you can feel it if that’s all that happenened…
I have about 6 bulking medical books that I like to use, but if I need a quick something, yes, I use the internet
you may have irritated the outer layer of your eye (kind of like your skin), or torn it a little, depending on how bad it is.
I diagnose myself all the time…then I end up going to the doctor. so…go on!
is your eye any better??
Chop up some onions and cry the mofo out. I’m being serious here. Let the eye do its natural cleansing thing to flush it out. Afterwards, if you have to, definitely go to someone who knows what he’s talking about.
a crazy bug flew into one of my eyes and i thought i was going to be blind but it turned out to be nothing and my eyes cleared after a few days.
Hey John, hope your eye is doing better. I have an idea for a featured content weblog entry: ImportedKokoPuffs’ April 11th post is pretty cool.
http://www.xanga.com/ImportedKokoPuffs/583121131/item.html
I would go to an eye doctor. I suspect a sty, and I would suggest getting a wash cloth soaking wet with the hottest water you can stand, and soaking your closed eye with it several times a day. Please wash the towels with bleachy water.
Rawr, i had the problem too and if u rubbed ure eye alittle to hard or to long, you probably just scratched it…they can do a test where they put some kind of yello dye in ure eye and then shine like a black light over it and if there are like lines, then its scratched, but other than that, maybe something is there and u cant feel it…
I do hope its nothing serious and you get better!
After reading bunches of comments telling you to go to the doctor, I knew you had probably heard that enough, so I didn’t post that comment. But being a mom type of person, I was just wondering how you are doing and if it is getting any better?
might be maggots ready to hatch from BENEATH THE REALM OF IRIS’!
Yes to question 2
Internet stuff is likely gonna be way out there or contradictory or just plain scary. No, your eye will not explode, implode or detach and take over the world. Corneal abrasions, allergies, infections, whatever… If it still hurts, see a doctor! Don’t mess around with yr eyes. Pirate-style eye patches are so not in right now.
i’m not an optometrist but i have had eye problems.. and everytime i do i got o urgent care. Its really cheap there.
I almost always do that…I am not a fan of medicine or spending a crapload on the doctor and only go in when I know it’s necessary. Funny thing…I had a sty in my eye the other night…it healed up eventually on its own.
OK John,
(Yep some medical experience BUT not a doctor) with that disclaimer behind me, I think you might of scratched the sclera (white and clear covering of the eye) or you might have a stye. Can you flip your eyelid to see if there is a small bump (can look as small as a pimple or larger) They do make stye medicine but the best thing is to see a doctor and let him lance this (if neded) or get the drops you need for the scratch (to find out if that is what it is they put in some drops and touch a small paper to the eye, then the doc looks thru a scope to see it he can see the scratch. The drops and the coloring on the paper allow him to see this)
Let us know what you find out. Don’t mess with those pertty brown eyes of yours, get in a see a doc.
i’m sorry to hear that, hope you fell better!
if you have time, you’d better go to see a doctor, and have a rest!
I am not a doctor, but I’m pretty sure you’re eye has a definite probability of falling out.
I say this because I am a recovering hypochondriac. I was never a really good one… I never diagnosed to the point of hospital visits and such. I do have a habit of noticing a “symptom” and running with it.
My most common diagnoses include, but are not limited to:
Multiple sclerosis
Cancer, all types, though never multiple cases at once
Early on-set alzheimers (I’ve just turned 29)
Brain tumors (see above under “cancer”)
Heart attack/stroke
Diabetes
Pregnancy, unexpected (though happily after I picking myself up off the floor)
So far, only one of these has ever come to fruition, so I am, as I said, a very poor hypochondriac. If I someday die of a disease because I assumed the strange pains were just my hypochondrosis, I plan to return to haunt many people who told me I was imagining things. AND … it will be terribly ironic, and I’ll want to be an example in a high school English class as such.
Good luck on not dying… or going blind.
Allergies? Itchy eyes, and you rubbed the eye too hard..Sometimes, when my eyes are itching during allergy season, it feels as though there is sand under the eyelid. In actuality there are little water blisters under there. If you have allergies, see your dr and he might be able to prescribe something that will help. Because that looks like something where you might have irritated it by rubbing, not burst the blood vessels..Burst blood vessels usually end up looking like a blood clot in the eye.
Sorry so late in responding..busy busy busy..
