  • FRIENDS LOCK

    Today Adam, Dave, and Janet are launching Friends Lock - a quick and easy way to limit access to your *entire site* with just a few simple clicks:

    Friends Lock is a different approach to privacy.  With Blocking,
    you can prevent certain people from accessing your site.  But as
    some of you have pointed out, they could just create new accounts and
    try again.   Not any more though - now you can stop them cold
    with Friends Lock!  And unlike with Protected Posting, Friends
    Lock gives you quick control over your entire site - so you don't have
    to privatize or protect posts one at a time .

    We considered making a Subscribers Lock instead of a Friends Lock...
    but then we realized that anyone could just subscribe to your site, and
    get access right away .  But you can always take care of everyone you're subbed to and quickly invite them to become friends with just a few clicks!

    One last note: all of our recent privacy features are entirely
    optional, so please don't feel any obligation to use them.  We
    just wanted to make sure that these options were available if you want
    them.  Let us know what you think!

    When someone has their Footprints turned off, you are not supposed to be able to see footprints of those who visit your site, nor have your own footprints show up on others' sites.

    Well, thanks Xanga, there's a bug -- and this bug has occasionally allowed a footprint to show up on my site from others and, most unfortunately, allowed me to show up as a footprint on someone else's site, someone I did not want to know my site name. Now they do because of this glitch.

    Not surprisingly, I am not extremely skeptical about the actual privacy of Xanga's privacy features, this new one included. I say fix the existing bugs before you start implementing new features.

    Either way, if you're looking to keep a username secret... I would recommend not visiting other sites while signed into the secret username. Sorry that you lost your secret username . I hope that Friends Lock and username blocking can help you regain a private place on Xanga...

  • how about instead of making us invite people to be our "friend".. you just alow a sub lock? as in, only the people i am subbed to (since i have a choice on this versus anyone can be a subber).. it's just a hassle having to invite these people to be my "friend".. and i don't know about other users.. but me, personally.. i don't use that "friends" option.. great features though..

  • A Friend's lock... I never thought of that one. Very cool, probably a whole lot easier to implement than my ISP block suggestion, and I know quite a few people who will appreciate it. Thank you John and the rest of the team as well for getting this done.

  • This would be huge if anyone I know actually used friends. I have like 50 or so "real-life" friends that actually use Xanga and I'm subscribed to and everything.. but only like three actually use the friends feature on here. However it definitely helps the creating-a-new-account-to-get-around-blocks technique. Good work. =)

    I'm just kidding. I know exactly what you mean. I may have a use for this, unfortunately.

  • I didn't read all the comments before, but I see that eeleigna has a good solution in allowing only people that we're subscribed to to see the site. It's kind of like picking and choosing who you want to view the site, which is what I think the ultimate goal should've been in the first place. Subscriptions can be added and removed with just a few clicks, and it provides a good way for users to pick who they want to see it.

  • Interesting. I don't think I'll use it, though. Part of the idea behind my site was that my friends only figure out gradually my name. I had a marvelous time and they didn't mind. I suppose, though, that after a while, if they hadn't figured out, they would have considered me a stalker or something.
    This can be a good idea; I just think it should be used with caution.

    any way of making unlisted entries? like the same way you have public and unlisted photos, except it applies to entries..... just wondering. demand for that may not be as great though. i'm thinking of maybe having a few pages i can frequently link to, but not something that would appear as an updated entry.

  • Great job!  This is one of the features from Livejournal that I wish Xanga had.  However, I don't think I'll be using it though, since a lot of the people I know don't use the "friends" feature.

  • If you are going to put this kind of focus on our friends list, it would be nice if it also functioned properly. The date of last update under my friends is usually wrong by months, and yesterday I was supposedly negative 98 friends. I never knew I was hated by so many people! lol.

    i don't know why you guys add in features seen elsewhere, but I certainly know that other sites I use do this because people use the lack of such features as excuses for leaving a site. So if the features are there, then there's less excuse to leave.

  • Total User Block should be deleted at all, I never think this function do any good and would not get the intended results.  With the introduction of Friend Lock, the only reason of it existence vanished altogether.

  • I think you should have a block where people you don't want seeing your site can't click and go directly to it, because there are some people that wont stop looking at my page, and it's really irritating.

There are still some of us who don't use the "Friends" function, and mentioning that, I don't ever want to use that actually, and everytime I goto "profile" settings it asks me the same question again, again, and again and it is VERY annoying!! Can't you guys make an option to allow us to decide if that message should pop up for joining or not?

    It is not very useful for those who don't use the "Friends" function.

  • Neat idea, but my only concern with this is how does one "meet" someone new on Xanga? If we keep closing ourselves off to others and not let someone get a glimpse of ourselves, how do we meet like-minded people? It's Xanga where I found other mothers who had similar parenting issues that I have, and vice versa. This would make it hard for people just joining Xanga to meet others that they could find a connection with - especially if nearly everyone on Xanga has the friends lock.

    Surely there must be a balance.

  • OJzz.  I'm not friends with anyone at all and no one is friends with me   Its not that I'm wildly unpopular (Eminem likes me. Isn't that a good reference? ) more that I couldn't be bothered with the feature which I think really appealed more to the myspacey kids rather than their parent-types.  I just wanted to blog and comment, not get terribly involved in all this social networking.  So now I might have to do the friendz thing.

    Good idea though, but it would just as easy to implement a mutual-subbers lock - those you are subbed to who are subbed to you get to read your site. Hmmm, I just realised I don't really have a subbers list either.  Oh well...

  • oh and I'm also a bit confused by this new feature... how does this differ from protected posting?  With protected posting all I have to do is add only the names of people that I want to be reading my site, onto it.  Nobody else can read. 

    Seems like this new feature is the same thing, except more difficult because it requires that all the people you want to be reading you, to actually be using the friends feature?  Just trying to figure out the difference here.

  • This will be perfect for my daughter's xanga.  It allows more people than the non-premium 10-person limit on protected posts does.  Now if only all her friends and relatives used the Friends feature... maybe it's time to do some convincing.  I think it's a great option.  Thanks for all your work to accommodate people's needs in this regard!

    The http://www.xanga.com/robots.txt file would automatically include your entire site so search engines using robot crawlers would quit looking at you.

  • Noticed tat some commentators proposed a feature that sounds like the existing 'Protected List'.  But, I suppose, opening up the premium protected list is bound to upset many premium subscribers.

    What about, overcoming this by adding an 'Approval' feature to subscriptions? ie. I have to approve all subscriptions to my blog. Very much like the 'Add as Friend' feature. Give an option to de-activate the approval feature though. Else the Featured Blogs are gonna have a busy time approving truckloads of subs everyday :)

  • So, I take it that none of the people complaining about this being such a horrible concept use Myspace? I mean, this is there too. I use it. I've had issues with my stepson's bio-family watching my blog site, so I am all for keeping out unknown visitors. As for whether or not you use Friends, who cares? If someone you subscribe to throws on Friend lock and you would still like to read, request to be their friend. they accept, boom, you are now able to read their site again. What part of "using" friends causes a difficulty here? I've sent a request to be on a friend's list so I can continue reading their site, and I still don't plan to use any other friends features. But it's nice that now I don't have to privitize everything. 10 people maximum on free protected isn't enough when you have more than 10 subscriptions. If I'm subscribed to someone, I'm fine with them reading my stuff. The friends lock lets me know which are actually that interested in reading my stuff. Helps the self esteem when there's a shortage of comments ;)

    i was just now lookign for somehting like this because i have someone who has been putting rude and unneccarily mean comments on my site, so i blocked them, so they created another site... so i blocked that one too and then made it so non signed in people cannot go to my site. BUT THEN SHE MADE ANOTHER ONE!!!!!!! but this friends lock should solve the problem

    Right now there's the option of not being included in Weblog, Photo, Video, & Audio Searches but not TAGS. Is there anyway you can add tags to that list?

    I love using tags - it helps me find old entries faster by categorizing them but it also brings unwanted visitors to my page when they do tag searches.

  • I do have to commend you - the Xanga team does go out of their way to try to make this the best blogging experience possible.  Thank you for your efforts.  And for taking my comment seriously.  I appreciate that this is available for others... but I'm gonna have to deal with buglies visiting (even after being blocked) if I'm going to keep my content available to the general public.  It's a simple choice - are they more important than everyone else?  My answer would be no... so unlocked in all ways I remain.

    But boy, do I *love* having that blocker button.  You guys struck GOLD with that idea.  Have button, have power.  Everything becomes controllable that way.  ((wink!))  Again... thanks so much.

  • hmmmmm, do you ever get the feeling that you can't please anyone MOST of the time? Or that no one is ever satisfied? Maybe it's because I was one of those lucky ones raised to think that if you didn't have something nice to say, you shouldn't say anything...but oops, I just did that, didn't I?

    At any rate, if someone wants to take advantage of this, they can, and its great. Unless, one did as I did, thinking the "friends" option would never mean much of anything as on myspace, etc....and have allowed people to be 'friends' that one would never allow to read a protected post....LOL

  • Okay, I'm not sure who to go to with this, however. It takes an extremely long time to get the site to download when I click a link to go here. I haven't changed the link or whatever in any way. It's not my computer and it's been like this for like 2 weeks. I just have to go to http://www.xanga.com and then walk away from the computer for like 10-15 minutes. Please please please fix it if you can.

  • All these new features sound wonderful and all but with all these "privacy" concerns, maybe its better to not blog at all? Whats the point of blogging if you don't have people from across the world reading it? If people care so much about privacy, maybe they shouldn't bother blogging at all or just create their own password protected list-serv!

  • Can you guys work on something that you can individually make each protected post allowed to certain individuals? From what I've read, the protected posts are visible to someone on one protected list. If you change that list later, people can then go back and read things you didn't allow them to see before. Sometimes I only want to write things that I can allow only certain people to see...and not necessarily everyone on my protected list. Please advise if you have something like this in place already.

  • My friends and I used the block feature to stop a few trouble makers from coming to our sites. As soon as they knew we were using it they began creating other sites just to come to ours. It has been an ongoing problem for some time now. Last count they had 41 sites just to harass us. We were at the point of shutting down our sites and forgetting about it. Thank You So Much for creating the friends lock. We no longer have to worry about those people and can continue using xanga without being harassed. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU~!!!!!!

    Did you ever recreate the ability to protect/privatize all of the posts in a batch?!?!!? I've been asking for that since you removed the backdoor ability to do that. With all of these new features and the ability to now batch edit the photos, can't we have something to do that with our posts as well?

    Does the Friends block mean that someone who isn't on your list can't even get IN to the site or can someone find you and then request access?

  • re: batch editing of blog posts, not just a batch to privatize or protect post, but also one to publicize them as well. Sometimes we actually DO get rid of the banes of our existence. I don't understand why this hasn't been addressed when you've added all of these new features.

    I completely agree.  Because I won't upgrade my profile to use the friend's lock, I now can't view my friend's sites who ARE using this feature.  I'm not a fan, but like I said above- it's a great feature for the basic xanga users.

    Is it possible to make in the future that when u register Xanga, you could only register with 1 email and then if soeone wants to open a new account, they cant use that old email again?

    Or another suggestion:

    I notice most people register over and over again just get a new account once I block their old account, so can you maybe add a email varification process to the overall registeration process? I dont think this is a big hassle or something big which takes time to impliment. At least if you get this email varification thing in place, people would have to register a whole new email account just to create another xanga account. This way, I think it will be much safer for us users as well as reducing the need for us to block people since it is a big hassle for these leechers who comes in and leech my stuff or to nose in to see wot'z happening.

  • Nice feature - I have to be honest and tell you that I have been very absent from Xanga due to starting my own business recently, and I am inundated with trying to learn about all the new features that have popped up!  BUT I'm excited all the same.  However, I personally do not have a need or use for the "friends," feature, or maybe I just don't like it because it's change - and I'm finding I don't like change as much, as I grow older.  Anyway, I digress, I think the suggestion left by eeleigna is GREAT.  I completely agree with her take on the situation, and hope you will find it more desireable for most of your Xangians to tweak this new feature.  Just a second to the motion.

    Thanks for all your hard work, awesome ideas and technological genius.  NOW...if you could just give me a free one-on-one, tutorial for dummies - I'd be in Xanga heaven.

    I also have a complaint. I used the block search engines feature and I'm still getting my footprints spammed by them (mostly google, but there was some other random one as well). I really don't care that search engines are on my site, it's just that i'd rather not have a ton of footprints from them when I'm the one looking thru my past posts. Thank you.

  • I really appreciate the hard work you have put into making xanga a more enjoyable place to be. Lots of creative, new, and USEFUL features. I think that perhaps this new feature using friends will HELP more people to use that feature.

    After all, just because not many people presently USE it, does not mean it is not a GREAT feature (I've checked it out, and if more people DID use it, it'd be great! Lots of potential) So perhaps this will encourage more people to actually try it?

    Don't back off this, keep adding reasons for people to try out friends features- I think it has a lot of potential. People just need to be encouraged to explore the many aspects of xanga.

    Perhaps you should think of ways to encourage people to try many of xanga's various features? I'd imagine a lot of people use xanga and are not aware of ALL the many neat things they could try. People have a way of seeking out what they are looking for, and not noticing other little treasures they didn't think were there.

    there are so many empty accounts that people just reated to flame someone because they just don't like their posts. and yeah using friends lock could prevent it but seriously, I want my friends to be able to read my blog even if they choose not to be a xanga member.

  • I've gotta tell you guys that you never cease to amaze me in coming out on top of every other blog site known to users. I've been on Xanga, under one of a few names on and off for nearly 5 years now - originally followed my young nephew here to spy on him and see what sort of things he was doing on the Net (he was like 12 at the time) - and within days I found the users here to be incredible and far different than any other site I had been on .. on the Net for a decade or more. Not only the users, but the owners, the employees - all of it. The owners and employees truly cared and gave personal attention to each user - it's still that way, although as you've grown the turn around time isn't as instant as it once was, but still very personal and always addressed.

    Over the past few years - as blog sites grew more and more - and more and more people (the spread of the desease will never end) began to be unable to function in life without online access, stalking, trouble makers, bored housewives - people forgetting to take their meds LOL, game players, much worse and much better than those - all came running out of the shadows and unlike any other blog site on the Net, you have not only addressed every single issue, but you have programed your site with the most detailed features and functions that any user could ever possibly want on any site. Your answer to the growing privacy issues online have far surpassed not only every other blog site - but online banking, online bill paying, online everything. You have truly built an extremely secure and safe security lock down for your users and should be truly commended and acknowledged for it. Nowhere else on the Net can you choose from so many different types of security features and functions - or choose to lock it down entirely. You've given us control over every ounce of our presence online, including search engine indexing, rss feeds, blocks, friends, logged in, the right to use trackers, footprints and more. Like many people - I have a myspace (the horror) profile as well - I've never blogged there and never have any intention on blogging there - like Xanga, I now had a 12 year old niece, who as on Myspace, so I followed her there, the same way I followed my nephew to Xanga all those years ago - and with that, like on Xanga, as soon as I saw a white board and markers to play with - I was like a happy little kid, building my pretty presence on the Net again - give me the ability to be unique and creative - and I'm there! But, unlike Xanga, although I could make it pretty (the profile) - I never once, not even once, felt comfortable blogging there - I was sickened to death (still am) about their lack of, and lazy attitutde toward, the tremendous use of porn on their servers and how little they do to ensure that the zillion pre-teens are not able to view those profiles. Myspace is a walking disaster, an out of control entity - who will, only when strongly advised, shut down a 12 year old's profile for being too young, but then does nothing to ensure the 12 year old doesn't come back and make 200 new profiles with each one that gets shut down. User's have to monitor their own security - their own terms of service, children's safety and their own privacy. It's a nightmare - and anyone that has a profile on Myspace knows exactly what I'm talking about - just an out of control entity, sitting out there on the Net with no values, care or perception of controlling the site or looking out for their users. Will I leave? No, I have to follow my 12 year old niece around the Internet and she's addicted to myspace, and, many of my friends have profiles there - but I did strip down my site recently - when stupid people became a problem and there wasn't a darn thing I could do about it - because there is no personal contact there, there is no caring customer support, there are no security measures or lock downs, there are no tracking features able to be used - there's nothing. You can set your entire site to private - lock out people who don't know your last night or email address (moronic - you can get those 2 things on someone by searching them out on the Net) and still - there are ways around it - you can still get into their private pages. John, and all of you that have been here since Xanga was born, as well as the newer employees/staff that joined years later - you guys should be interviewed - you guys should be in the News - Xanga is the most, and has always been the most, innovative, up to date, safe, secure, morally correct, customer supportive, technically advanced and ... most creative site on the Net. No other blogging community site has ever, or now does, come close to even 1/10th of the features, functions and personal caring you guys have put into Xanga. As adults we're free to be ourselves, share our lives with our friends, our hobbies, our anything - privately and appropriately - and as children who come - you are the most child-safe blogging community built on the Net to date. You deserve far more credit and far more acknowledgement than you get ... then again, without receiving as much as you deserve, look at your user lists - you're still huge. I wish there was an easy way to get you guys into the news for all of the positive things you bring to us - as much as myspace and others have been brought into the news for all of the negative things they brought to the Net.

    Thank you ... for 5 years of some of the best friendships I've had in my adult life - 5 years of the freedom to be an artist and express my innerself without having to hold a pen or a paint brush - which would result in extremely ugly art lol ... 5 years of personal, first name basis customer support, 5 years of you guys finding a way to stop or control every problem on the Net as it sprung up, 5 years of the most remarkable and unexplainable experiences of my life, as it stands online and lastly ... 5 years of proof that if a company wants to provide a safe Net, privacy, security, features that allow you to express yourself as much as you want, control the content, stand by terms of service and make the Internet a place filled with rules, just as they stand in real life -that it can be done, and can be done as quickly, and as well - as they need to be done. I genuinely congratulate you guys, applaud you and admire you. You have been, and are, the first of your kind to have ever proven that a safe Net is possible, easy and required. Thank you for Xanga.

  • I really enjoy this new feature. It's exactly what I've been looking for. My current Xanga account is relatively new, but I've been a member since 2004, and the only reason I shutdown my old account was because it was getting me into trouble, causing drama and just causing friction with people at my school and even teachers.

    The new lock feature is everything I've been wanting for a while now --the chance to have my journal be readable to my friends only, so that I won't have to hide them from away with private postings (which defeats the purpose of a blog, if you ask me) or protect them (which only goes so far because it's a 10-or-under situation on your protected list, and that in itself causes drama, if you know what I mean) so this is a great compromise. Security without pulling an iron curtain around your blog.

    I love it. =)

    Keep these great ideas coming, guys. At the end of the day, I choose Xanga over LiveJournal, Blogspot and all the other blog networking communities because Xanga is the only community that have these cool features, and a creative team behind it, making sure that Xanga continues to come up with new ideas and offer its users something useful, handy and simple.

    If i'm correct, the people on your protected list can see ALL of your protected posts. But sometimes I'll write a protected post and not want one or two of the people on my protected list to read it.

  • Thanks! This is just what my sisters and nieces were looking for. We were using the protected postings some, but, as you said, we had to be sure we clicked on "protected" each time we posted. That worked, but this will be easier.

    I also think the sub lock idea would perhaps be just as good.

  • friends lock is a great thing for those who want to use it, but before you implement things like this you should look at how some of your existing features are working.

    on the privacy edit screen, on this choice:
    Search Engines: Allow outside search engines to index my site
    i marked the "no" circle, but i still get footprints from google and yahoo daily. can you fix this??

  • Can you PLEASE make a subscriptions lock?!? Or someway to make all previous entries private without having to go through each one. I can't figure out how to set up friends' lock and my friends don't use it anyway. And I've had to block 9 different profiles within the last week (and these profiles that I blocked are causing other people trouble too).   • I disagree in some case. It’s against a freedom of comment. There has to be freedom to comment suppose the information bloged in the weblog is wrong. I had a situation where one of my very closest friend bloged a wrong information and I commented afterwards and she said I should not do that and she said she goanna block me from comment. Also she said that her blog is particularly to her X-Boy Friend. That situation was that she helped by a person but in her blog it has been mentioned as that her X-Boy Friend helped her. So in these cases we need to have freedom to comment about such situation.

  • although i like the fact that the technology and upgrades on xanga are getting better and more advanced each day, this totally beats the idea on an online journal. if you're willing to make a blog viewed by thousands of people each day, then you're taking the risk to having some strangers view an entry about your day, which is totally safe and harmless if you don't expose any personal info (ie: address, school, town, phone number, last names, etc.). if you're going to block so many people, enable xanga lock, and use this new feature, then an online journal is not for you. you might as well stick to a handwritten journal that you hide from your mommies and daddies.

  • my problem with some of these things is don't write stuff on here that you don't want people to see. if there's something you don't want someone to read and you're writing it online, maybe you should consider writing in a paper journal. or even typing in in word or something if you're a typing kinda person. otherwise, you're typing about you on an online site. for example, i write on this sometimes cause i like to type, i try not to make it too personal though. anything i wouldn't feel comfortable having anyone read, i won't type about it. i do have a journal too though. now, that's where you should write about private and personal things you don't want others to see. otherwise, realize that you are most definitely posting something on the web. i'm not upset or saying anything bad about anyone, just a thought that i figured i'd share. peace

    So, we should be able to set up a group and name it like Friend Group, Work Group, Social Group, Significant Other Group, Family Group, etc.

    Then be able to add people onto each group. Hopefully more than 10! in each group!

    Then besides being able to select public, private, protected. It can have buttons for each protected group we have set up so a post can be read by anyone in a selected group.

    That would definitely be the bomb...

  • It would be better if we could just block problematic IP's directly. Those of us who are trying to build readership for our blogs may be limited by Friends only posting. For example, to get rid of one spammer, I've had to invite as friend everyone who's ever come to my site. it is cumbersome and I am sure that a good number of them will not accept the invite.

  • My child's site has been hacked.

    Around noon, November 7, 2006, I notified Xanga that my child's (a minor) Xanga blog had been 'hacked into'. An unauthorized user (hacker, intruder, etc) posted derogatory information. Apparently, the unauthorized user also changed the login password and associated email address such that the rightful 'blogger' wasn't able to delete the entry.

    To attempt to resolve the problem, I took the following actions:

    <LI>I click on a link titled "My account has been hacked - please delete it right away!" and was directed to this URL: http://help.xanga.com/sitehackeddelete.htm. The instructions on that page were to click on another link - http://help.xanga.com/contact/delete-hacked.htm, which I followed, filled out the form and requested that the hacked site be taken down. Xanga response was nil. They didn't even send an autoresponse confirming that my request had been made, so I made a number of subsequent requests to take the blog down (delete the website and contents).
    <LI>I sent a number of emails to safety@xanga.com requesting that the hacked site be deleted. Those requests were also unanswered.
    <LI>I phoned the Xanga.com registrant at (212) 695-4940, 555 8th Avenue, Fl21, New York, NY 10018-4308 and was unable to reach a live person. A recording instructed to send email to safety@xanga.com
    <LI>I faxed a request to close the site using a Parental Request to Delete Information Form, as suggested by Xanga at this url: http://help.xanga.com/parentalrequest.htm
    <LI>I've asked other authorities to send independent confirmation to Xanga in order to confirm the legitimacy of my request.

    Xanga has failed to take down the blog and has failed to recognize the receipt of any of my numerous communication attempts with them.

    <LI>What else should I be doing to get the hacked site removed?
    <LI>Why is it taking so long for an action that only requires seconds on Xanga's behalf to implement?
    <LI>Is it unreasonable to expect for the site to be suspended or put into a quarantine area while Xanga is investigating my concerns?

    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • That's a good feature to add another dimension to the protected list thing, but it's not a good feature for people like me who are interested in broadening their reader base beyond Xanga.  What about nonXanga commenting?

  • How about only allowing YOUR personal subscribers list, as in only the people that you yourself are subscribed to, to view your page. That way, no one can just subscribe to you and see your page, you have to be subscribed to them, and in that way, they are your friends for sure. I just think that would be better because it's kind of a hassle to send emails to all of your friends or acquaintances just so that they can see your site.

  • I think it should make you like, create your own certain list just like you do for protected posting.. like I have the lock on right now and when I tried to view it i had to log in first and as soon as I did I could see my page, I think it shoudl be that you have to log in and if you're not ont he person's "list to see it" then you can't.... that's what I thought this feature was in the first place, but now that I see it's not, I don't see what the point is, just that you have to have an Xanga to see another person's site.. that doesn't really limit who can see it in my opinion....

  • I have a question for you.  I have a layout site, and I just recently changed my password.  I had a habit of typing in my old password, and I keep forgetting to use the new one instead, so I always have to sign in twice.  But now it won't let me on it.  Even with the right password, it says I can try again in the next 30-45 minutes.  I think that's a good security thing.....a good idea.  But my question for you is, how can I get it to remember my password.  I mark that little check box all the time, and it never remembers it.  In the next half hour or so, I might not be available, but could you try to get back to me anyway?  I don't want to have to wait an hour every time I try to sign in.  Thanks.

  • ummm, friends lock is still letting people access my events and reveiws. people who aren't logged on to xanga. and i definately activated the *hide my site from search engines and don't allow access to nonxangans* features a looong time ago. (and they have worked great for the most part.)

  • Hey John, I just wanted to suggest making an option to show Profile Pics in the Subscriptions page. That would be really cool, because sometimes I don't know someone by their username, but by their pic. Perhaps something to consider!

  • Well....I have decided not to post any more videos hosted by Xanga. Reason being that it links to other videos that aren't mine, and that are trashy. Even when I make everything "Jesus" it will still bring up some links to "related" videos that are of the devil, but named "Jesus" also. I honestly have no desire to be "related" to demonic videos that are anti-Christ in nature. Xanga has been pretty clean, but if it gets trashy like "My Space" did then I'll be saying adios to Xanga totally after all of these years. If the people who run Xanga won't keep it clean then it will eventually be over-run by the perverted minds of demon-possessed people who want me to support their vomitting defilement of people all over the world. Does anyone know of a "moral" weblog site? A place with order and decency that is safe for my friends to view?! People need to think. If this garbage was in your face when you were a kid how would you have turned out?

  • Instead of a "Friends Lock" or a "Subscribers Lock", why not a "Subscriptions Lock"? That way, as soon as User A subscribes to User B, User B has access to User A's site. It's really only fair, and that way, no one has to go through the time-consuming hassle of adding a million Friends. Tons of my friends who subscribe to me (and to whom I've subscribed) have activated Footprints Lock, and I can't see a thing on their sites, and I really do not want to activate the Footprints feature -- not because I want to browse anonymously, but because I really don't want to know who has been on my site. The fact that User A has subscribed to User B already indicates that User B is a friend, no? And if at any time User B poses a safety threat, User A has only to unsubscribe.

    Just a thought.

    On my xanga site I tried to uplaod a pic (there were no more pictures on my page) and it just brought me the same page I was just one (the one where you can see all your uplaoded profile pics)

  • It has been a while since you guys updated the front page...

    Idea for xanga:  Make deleting post easier.  I clear my xanga out completely every so often and you have to go into edit, then delete and that gets really annoying when your deleteing 50 more more post (deleting my post now).  How about making a check list if you will, so that we can delete multiple post at the same time?

    One more suggestion, I saw that now when you search for users that if the user shut down the site it is no longer showing up.  That's awesome, but when you do a blog search you still find all the content from shut down sites.  It would be great if you'd make it so that doesn't come up in the search.

  • Wo, I discovered today in my footprints that google is publishing RSS feeds of my pages in 'edit' mode, with little working buttons available that say yes and no to the question 'save these changes?'  I've never seen this happen in my footprints before, and I'm worried those pages will be cached on search engines.  I turned off my RSS feed for now, but I'd rather not have to do that, and it won't stop what has already been cached.  I'd like to get hold of someone about this but don't see a way to do this privately via xanga message or email.

  • i agree with some that we can keep this as a subscriber's lock .. and that whenever someone subscribes us, they should need approval from the owner of the xanga they're subbing to ... this way, we'll know who's subscribing us, and it won't be as easy as a click...

  • it sounds like a good idea, but i'm not liking it so far.  i'll see that ppl have viewed my blog from my footprints and when i try to look at theirs, they have friend lock activated.  how about allowing ppl who use friend lock to view only their friend's pages?  i would think you have to give up a little privacy if you want access to other people's blogs.

  • I think it's a great feature, one that one of my best friends will love, and one that I don't need but appreciate anyways...and as a disabled programmer, I want to say that there is no pre-launch testing that can catch all potential "bugs." Hence, beta testing. However, I think John and the crew trust us enough to let us beta test everything, and that's what this forum is for: so we can tell him the bugs. And even after beta testing, things happen. Don't flame; just inform. Geez.

    I have two premium accounts. Two. One I barely even use. I have other free ones, but I want to support Xanga, because of the great job they do, so I pay for two of them because that's all I can afford. Thanks Xanga folks!

    I am doing a project, 'jumpin around the world' project. Basically you take a picture of yourself jump indivudually or in group, in whatever ways you want. I collect them, and make a book out of it (coffeetable book) and if it interest you, you can buy the book, and part of the money will be donated for charity.

    So since I've been a longtime member with Xanga, I'd like to ask the Xanga team to be involved on this project of mine. This book will also be 'advertising' your skills, talents, or whatever you guys have to bring. And this would be a great way for you guys to get more 'recognition'.

I've been slowly losing my patience with these new "cyber bully/ lablers" some of the most acknolaged being: Dr_Funkinstien , MonsieurCheap ,  MrCheap, Prince_of_SpaceII , Yulon , and Mr_Thunder_Cheese among others. Apperantly they've started blogrings and have been recruting members to begin an anti emo/goth/punk/ diffrent movement. I just thought that you might want to look into them since they are very annoying.

  • John, since the last upgrade I cannot use my internet explorer 6 although it is on the list of browsers. I can only use firefox or opera and those browsers do not work right at other things. When ever I try and use Internet Explorer 6 to upload pictures I get taken to the error page that says update your browser. Now I do not want to use those other browsers.   • dude, can you help with the email posting problem?  I've been writing help for weeks and no response.  i paid for the service and it's not working..  any ideas??  if xanga can't provide what i signed up for then should i not get my funds back??  see if you can help me out man...  it's very frustrating...

  • John, my posts are spreading all over the page the last couple of days. It makes people scroll back and forth to read them. Why does this happen sometimes? Is there a way to put a line length in the editor? Judi

  • Friends Lock is not a viable security measure.  Any ol' body can click the "Invite ___ to be your friend" and up pops a nice little page with the option to "Subscribe to ____."  Sure, they can't see your profile picture, and they can't see your site colors, but they can read all your posts.

    Please offer an option to disable the "Subscribe" option on http://www.xanga.com/connect.aspx?friend=true&user=____ -- and I'd appreciate an announcement when it's fixed.  Thanks.

  • friends lock doesn't show up under my privacy settings. It only shows footprints lock and xanga lock. Help??

    I would like to active my "Friends Lock" option in my Xanga.  However there's only Xanga Lock and Footprints Lock in my Account Information page.  I failed to find any solution on the web.  Please kindly help.
