  • XANGA ADS

    We’ve been experimenting with advertising over the last year.  We’ve run some pretty cool promos for movies (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Anchorman, National Treasure),
    and some pretty fun quizzes/sweepstakes too.  We’re gonna continue
    to run these promos – and starting today, we’ll be running more
    traditional banners on the site as well.  Overall, our goal is to
    make enough money to keep Xanga free, while keeping the ads fun and
    relatively unobtrusive.

    But there’s been one ad we’ve heard a
    lot about: the one with roaches!  As one user wrote in, “Bugs
    freak me out enough to make me close the page as soon as I see that
    ad.”  We couldn’t agree more: we’ve been trying to kill that ad
    for quite some time, but like roaches themselves… it has been
    surprisingly hard to get rid of.  But we finally squashed it and
    it should be gone from our ad rotation!

    We’ve also taken out
    some slightly risque ads that we feel are not respectful to
    women.  As we use more banners, there’s a chance that ads like
    these might slip through.  So we’d like to ask for your help in
    helping police our ads!  If you see one that is gross like the
    bugs, or not respectful towards women (or any other group)… please

    Great work out there!

    I’ve found a bug with Events… would i bring them to you? Whenever I post an event, for some reason the time I select in the “When” form field is not the time that shows up when the post is uploaded – what shows up on the “events” page is a time under “when” that is 3 hours earlier than the time I select! However, when I click on the title for each event to view the event alone, I get the original time that I selected. Any chance you guys could look into this? Thanks!

  • I’m very glad that you’re policing the ads; most sites which require banners ads to survive are certainly not this considerate.

    The only ad that’s annoyed me was that one with Sweety the Chick which starts singing loudly when you mouseover it – it took me a while to work out where it was coming from while idly clicking on other stuff, so you can imagine the effect on my nerves of Sweety randomly yelling several times when I had the speakers turned up for music I intended to play myself. Please give Sweety the heave-ho!

  • A little while ago, Xanga had an ad for The Ring 2. Personally, I’m terrified of those kind of movies. Please don’t put ads for horror movies on Xanga that limits my use of it just because of a stupid ad.

    why don’t you use google ads instead? They’re REALLY unobtrusive, and they rarely lead to bad adware ridden sites. Also, they are all relevant to whatever is in the post on a xanga.

She doesn’t know her password anymore so she cant shut her site down. Her mother got involved in our argument and things got worse.     Anyway, can you guys add an option to “view entries?” It seems like the fixed number of entries one can view, whether on private or public display, is 5 entries. Can you also add a “view all entries” or “view 50 entries” option? Or have a text box the surfer can use to select the number of entries he or she wants to view. That would be SO helpful because it takes so long to navigate only 5 entries at a time.

  • Hey, how about if you want good ads, STOP PUTTING ONES WITH SPYWARE ON THE SITE!!! Everyone knows you can’t really get a free PSP by spanking the streaker or get a free iPod by making a free throw. And everytime you win at those stupid games it sends you to some site and then BAM. Your computer has Spyware and everything is down the tubes and guess what; you still don’t have that iPod. Maybe if you put ones that actually helped, like Amazon, IMDB, Fandango, any other sites that help and don’t make your computer go A-Wall. And one last point. One of your new ads where it wants you to “Dodge the rocks and get a free iPod”, you don’t even have to click on the ad to get Spyware you just have to move your mouse over it twice. So please, fix this problem so no one has to suffer the tragedy of Spyware and/or Adware.

    I have found music for my site and it works I have tested it a hundred times but it still won’t play on my site. I have messed with the whole loop and play once thing but still nothing.   • howabout going beyond those ads that objectify women, and simply tossing anything that uses a model of any sort to convince us of product quality or effectiveness, unless it’s like, a little kid holding an ice cream and smiling. ;) I’m pretty sick of being sold software development tools by some picture of a woman sitting in front of a laptop, and i’m sure she is equally tired of trying to convince me to move my application(s) to dotNet. heh.   • Well, I do not know if anyone will read this, because there is no contact for general feedback… (That would be really nice…)  But I would just like to bring it to your attention that many of us think that the featured content thing is getting out of hand.  You should really filter what you put on there – the vast majority of the sites have no content at all.  There are so many people writing about mindless and nasty things, like the very popular x_kiss_my_tan_x, who are incredibly disrespectful to people and who merely post pictures of themselves, advertising their “hotness.”  Do you not see a problem with that?  Featured content needs a major revamping, and only people with interesting, provocative postings should be allowed on the list.  It’s also a contest to see who can get the most comments, and that is NOT what it should be all about.  Am I right?  : )

  • I really hate the ads for the free Ipods. The ones with the boxer and the baseball game are fun, but I vehemently hate the “SHoot the Bunny” and “Stand Over the Gopher Holes and Shoot Them as They Pop Up” games are absolutely sick. What kind of society do we live in where we equate shooting an animal with winning prizes and having fun? For someone who loves animals and is an ardent animal activist, these stupid, pointless, and ignorant ads are very, VERY disturbing. How am I supposed to talk in my blog about vegetarianism, or animal rights, while some cartoon jerk is walking back and forth across the ad at the top of my page, sticking a shotgun into gopher holes. I hate these ads. I hate them to such a degree that you could not possibly imagine. You have already removed ads that have bugs on them, or that are offensive to women, are the beliefs of animal lovers less important. I have these beliefs because of the strong ethical/moral arguments against killing animals for sport or entertainment. I believe these arguments to be at least as legitimate as those of the woman whose fear of bugs made her want the bug ad removed.

    They are plenty of other advertisers out there that don’t use ads that are offensive to people, so why do you have to use these ones? The company themselves is kind of sketchy, as its just some kind of advertising front to get you to buy things or services and get your friends to do the same. I sincerely hope you will remove these ads in the near future. I truly hope you will consider this seriously. I know that I am not alone in these feelings.

  • Here’s my question… why, all of a sudden, do I have links in the middle of my blog post?  I didn’t put them there, and they are all links to advertisements.  This is highly obtrusive.  I do not advocate the advertisements being placed in my blog, and I don’t want them there.  Am I the only one who has noticed this, and feels this way?!  I’ve always been more than satisfied with xanga, and I don’t want to leave.  However, if this keeps up, I’m afraid I’ll have to, which is sad… I love my xanga, and have many memories in it…

  • Wow. I’m really glad you guys actually care about the quality of the ads. But I’ve not been bothered so much by the content of the ads as I’ve been by some of them being too taxing on computer resources, especially seeing the rising (technical) sophistication of interactive/flashy ad banners.

    For example, there was a Flash ad for Walla’s email service which really badly lagged up my other computer (which was, to be fair, an old Intel Celeron – but it’s faster than the comps at school, so I can only imagine how badly that must mess up people viewing Xanga sites from the library!). That particular ad was of an aquarium with a “wavy” distortion effect. No objectionable content there, but it was just amazingly annoying, and I found myself refreshing the page to get another ad whenever that one came up, just so I could type a proper blog post without waiting 3 seconds for each character to show up. Quite annoying, and no one should ever have to go through that.

    So while I’m not saying you should necessarily remove ads that are big resource-hoggers, could you please put in place some standards for advertisers so their media is actually viewable by users? I’d hate to see Xanga lose users just because of some bloated ads which make the pages impossible to even load!

    I have had Xanga for over 2 years now, with 2 different accounts. My account right now, sullen_onyx, is being sabatoged by people using my comment line as an online chat room. It is very annoying. They keep saying that they are going to tell more people about the “cool chatline”, and they repeatedly say things about me and my appearance which are not respectable. Not that the rude comments bother me, and not that I can’t stand up for myself, but I was wondering how these people got my site name, and how I can stop it from getting out.

    It’s really starting to aggrivate me. Every time I try to leave a blog ring, and the extra security sign-in comes up, it always tries to sign me in as my old name. It won’t let me sign in as my current name, it won’t recognize my name PICKupthePHONE, it tells me that my password is wrong, when it’s the right password. My old name (fast_as_you_can) hasn’t been used in a long time, so I don’t understand why that’s coming up. HELP.

Whenever I go to either my xanga or my friends, I’m getting pop-up after pop-up after pop-up, and it’s getting really annoying. I’m using Firefox, but even that doesn’t stop all the popups. And no, it’s not my computer…just scanned it yesterday for all spyware and viruses; the pop-ups only “arrive” when I visit Xanga sites :( .

  • I don’t think it matters what you advertise, except for your own cause of targeting/bringing in money.  If someone doesn’t like what is being advertised, they don’t have to click on it.  The only exception is advertsiements with loud noises, or any noises, or advertisements that make the entire page flash or slow down loading…   in other words ads that use too much bandwith/space/etc.

  • A lot of these ads are visually very annoying to see. I think a lot of us are getting sick of the “Punch the monkey and win a PSP!” type stuff, because not only is it insulting/misleading advertising (it’s not that simple) but visually very distracting from other things that are on the page. Is there any chance that Xanga could employ more “unanimated” banners that aren’t Flash-based and distracting, and possibly not based on completing offers and wading through pages and pages of other advertising? We understand the legitimate need for revenue to be there to support the cost of hosting free sites, but isn’t there anything that can be done? (Google Style ads are wonderful!) Thank you!

  • Another one that really annoys me ( I’m not sure if it’s ever been on xanga though) is that one where you’re supposed to take a picture of Brad Pitt, and it keeps making photo snapping sounds. That sound drives me crazy! So if you don’t mind, watch for sounds (and spyware too- I tried to use xanga on a proxy server a couple months ago, and the ads were nearly all blocked out due to spyware)

    they’re ads for a dating service and claim to help you find your true match, and the pictures suggest that that match includes a DD cup. and i don’t like being visually assulted by those images when i visit xanga.   • You guys really need to get some better ads.  I’d love it if you used a technology like Gmail that chooses ads based on the content of the individual page.  There are no privacy threats, since these are publicly available sites, and it would generate many more page clicks.

  • Sorry to bother you, but I have been harrassed as of lately by some extremist Christian fanatics, one even threatened my son, Bear, by posting in their comment “Be careful now, Bear is in season, hunting season”.  That particular idiot, “The Hammer_Falls” shut down their site, but we’re left with “The Unstained” and “do_not_ever_go_here_again”.  These folks showed up at my site spewing their venom, and commenting things like “The Burning NEVER ends-EVER”.  I did nothing to deserve that, I was posting a birthday message to my son.  I understand this is a public site, but that kind of harrassment is unwelcome, particularly when it threatens my son.  Unfortunately, I deleted their comments, but they were dumb enough to prop me while they left their comments.  I hope thereis something you can do to resolve this matter, this is the first of such problems I’ve had to deal with-I’m not even in featured content or anything like that…
    I don’t take threats against a seven year old lightly, I hope you don’t either.

    There is a person named cecil carlyle. He has a xanga site called DaCubs4u2c. I have had a problem with him and another xanga member, Booyankees and yanceyhater. Well I have had problems with them like I said. Both of them live in my neighborhood and somehow they had hacked my other xanga called jared hater. They changed it so much to make me look like an idiot. I was wondering if you could terminate theyre xanga sites for hacking one of mine. Its just the problem is they changed the password so I  cant get back in to change it back. if you cant terminate them what do you think I should do? please help

I understand that keeping xanga free is the best thing you can do, because eventually people will get premium. but this new VERIZON ad is the most annoying thing ever. they better be paying you billions to have it be like that.   • Hello John, LittleEgypt on this side of the monitor.  I have lost a very good Xanga friend to Cancer.  He was an extremely popular man in our circle.  I have worked in quite a few of his sites during the past couple of years fixing graphics for him as well as fixes on his entries when he needed them.  He had quite a few sites and a lot of us are in hopes of keeping some of them alive.  Two are paid sites and have time on them and others are free sites.  One site he closed down and I am kind of in hopes the files may still be there and it might be possible to retreive the site.  I am thinking about paying for some of the sites as lifetime.  I have passwords to work in those I want to save but in actuallity, I don’t want to add anything or delete anything, I just want them to remain and those were his wishes and his dream as well.  Is it possible to actually speak with you to learn what can or can not be done.  I would appreciate your input and advice.
