Thanks to everyone for your feedback on our Premium pictures relaunch!
We’re working to resolve all issues ASAP.Here are the first few changes we’ve made::
- We’ve changed the picture manager so that it’s alphabetically sorted by default, rather than requiring an extra click.
We’ve read comments asking for something similar in the picture
pulldown (in the editor), and we’re looking into that as well.
- We’ve increased the default image width back to 400 pixels wide. When we relaunched, we had set the default image width to 320 pixels. I’m not sure what we
were thinking, because that’s a change from how it worked before. We
reset it so that all new uploaded pictures default to 400 pixels wide. - We’ve enabled 500 pixels image widths.
This was something we didn’t anticipate. It turns out that with
our old image system, if you made your image a certain size and
width… Xanga would create a 500 pixel version of it. We
missed this beforehand, so we enabled a fix which should let you
display a high-quality 500 pixel version of your pictures (instructions here).
On this last point, I’d like to clarify a bit about how the new
pictures system work. Before, when you uploaded a big picture… we
created two versions of the file. One of them was a compressed
version of the file; the other was a thumbnail that we’d store in under
a /t/ subfolder. But now in our new system, when you upload a
file… we store the original file. Then when we serve the image, we can generate images for you at any size and quality level. This means a few things:- Because we have the original file, at some point… photo
printing will become possible! We’re not there yet, but at least
now it will be possible one day. - You can actually fairly easily increase the default size of the image that we display. (instructions here, and we hope to make this much easier in the future).
We’ve also heard some reports that certain browsers (some
Mozilla/Firefox browsers, and possibly a few versions of IE) are not
uploading pictures properly? We checked it out and it looks like
the pictures *are* uploading – but just not appearing in the rich-text
editor, probably due to a JavaScript issue. We’re racing to
investigate further, and hope to have a fix soon.Please report any other issues in the comments below! We will
continue to make changes in response to feedback, so please let us know

unfortunately, i’m still having problems and can’t upload photos…sounds like it’s due to the javascript issue. if i could use IE, i would, but it doesn’t work with my OS currently.
John, I would like to make a complaint against a xanga member, “im_gonna_tell_u_what”. This person has created a xanga name long enough to leave insulting comments and commit slander and libel against its members. I would appreciate if you would review the situation and consider expelling this member for violations in your tems of service. Thank you,

(I usually display either sets of small photos, which sound as if they’ll work well with this system, but I also, VERY OFTEN, display 800 pixel-width photos. If I can no longer do this, I shall be very disappointed.)
I just found your comment. I really, really appreciate that you got back to me on the photo system issues. While unable to upload at this time (I use IE), I’ll stick with it for awhile and ride out the changes.

i wish I have Premium~
So, umm, 500 pixels is to be the maximum size available for posting without quality disintegration?
If this is the case, I shall have to display larger images by linking to them from another site. This also means that I will no longer need Xanga premium. The only upside to having Premium now, for me, is to have the ability to display a wider variety of profile photos and to allow more people on my protected posting list.
I’ll continue to ride it out for a bit.
(i mean 700. d’oh. it looks like i’ll be playing the part of the maniacal xangan today.)

My images are never wider than 400 pixels but now I’ve not been able to even upload one that says it is loading the image. It’s not there!
I cleaned out images in picture files even though I am no where near the limit! Unless your measure is off.
The other picture that did upload won’t show! I don’t like little red x’s thank you.

what’s the use of premuim now? this is not working out for me. ALL of the pictures i’m trying to uplaod now come out so compressed and pixelated – and i’ve even gone to the picture FAQ and read how to change the sizes in the code and what-not. i’m just gonna use my photo hosting from now on and hope that you guys fix this pronto.

The way it used to be, if an image uploaded but didn’t show up in the rich text editor, I could at least find it in my picture files, right-click the link, copy the location and paste that into an IMG tag, and get my pics to show. Now when I try it, instead of the image location that link in the picture files jumps back to the image manager page.
I hope you get the pulldown alphabetized soon. I didn’t pay for premium because I particularly like writing HTML.

i set all my pics as numbers in the drop down Image already uploaded:
bit – so the days of the week were IN ORDER at the top – now i cant even FIND them!!!
Put it back as it was before – if it aint broke - dont fix it!
It WAS fantastic – now – after buying prersents of xanga for friends – i wont waste my money

I hate to say it but you guys just don’t seem to be getting it.
We don’t want compressed files peroid!
If we wanted compressed images to put on our sites we can make them that way
on our own.
It is also very inconvient that you all decided to rename the files in such a way that you are making it so
hard for people like me that decorates sites for FREE for other people not to want to even bother with it
with all the copying and pasting that will have to be done from now on… come on guys…..

2. I am “with it” enough with photoshop to size the photographs to the size I WANT THEM TO BE. I don’t need someone else to decide what size “they think” my photos should be.

Thanks for all your hard work. I pay for Premium and am not the least bit disappointed. My only suggestion is to change the renaming of the photos (like pixie_taker mentioned). I like to make my own headers for my xanga, and when I uploaded a new one, I didn’t yet know about all these changes, and the different file name was incredibly confusing. Now that I somewhat understand what has gone on, the new crazy names for our pictures is just inconvenient. But anyway, I don’t want to sound like a complainer, I just want to let you know my suggestion, even though others have previously stated it. I really do appreciate you guys continually trying to make xanga even more awesome. I wouldn’t use any other online journal site.
If you’re going to do online photo printing, you’ll need to resolve the glaring color management issues.

why do you rename the pictures when they’re uploaded?
Anxiously awaiting a fix for the Firefox-related glitch. I see where the files go, and can work around the glitch, but it’s frustrating after such a long glitch-free period.
Also, the images are not displaying alphabetically in the pulldown menu. Another javascript issue?

so far all i’ve managed to do is tell the photo upload popup window which image to upload, and then it goes completely blank.
the new file naming system, as much as i hate to be so blunt, sucks my hole. i’ve suffered through frustration of varying levels with photo uploading for three years now, and this makes it the worst so far.
i appreciate all the work you guys put in, but sometimes stuff is okay the way it is, you know?
…and having said that, now i can’t even get into the new weblog area. “service unavailable”…sigh.
man, wish I could use the image space for other stuff, like my scripts =P.

just too complicated, the way it is right now. i bet if i were crazy with posting photos, i’d be bitchin’ and moaning like some of the other xangans, but for now i’m just “okay” with it.
i’ll give out a full verdict once you’ve got everything fixed. but one question: why all the re-naming? it just makes it so much more complicated and messy. and another thing: all the tags that come along with uploading a photo now… like style and border and everything… why not just go simple with width, height, border the way it used to be…. instead of automatically putting in a style tag? again, i think simpler is better. i appreciate the photo manager being sortable, but again, i don’t like all the apparently random names you assign to the uploaded pics because it’s not simple.

The ‘new’ sizing options are a great relief. I really would have outsourced many pics otherwise.
IE, for me, is now working to upload just fine. Yesterday, I was getting a ‘moz5′ error with it, but it cleared up-nothing on my end. Yet the other day, I was having the a similar problem with Firefox. Both are working for picture upload tests this morning.
I genuinely appreciate you efforts and your responsive here.

this appears to resolve the issue of picture size, and perhaps a simple way to allow us to choose the size we wish to display would be to include some radio buttons in the upload dialog with those default width choices. Instead of having to edit the HTML. While that is a simple HTML edit, it’s an extra step that many of us premium users may not want to take.
Besided that, I don’t know about other users of firefox and mozilla, but I have a particular issue with the HTML editing:
While in “edit HTML” mode in firefox or mozilla, the typing system breaks down completely. Instead of spending a few moments editing some simple HTML, it becomes a guessing game as to which characters are going to be erased relative to the position of the cursor when I use the backspace or delete key (regardless of highlighting of specific characters for deletion) and where the new characters I type are actually going to appear relative to the cursor when I try to type them.
This does not happen when I am in the xtools mode doing my general posting. It only plagues me in the Edit HTML mode. I have no other typing issues across this computer and the many programs I use, leading me to believe it is an issue within the xanga system.
I do appreciate all the hard work you guys put into xanga, which is why I never really complained about the editing problem before (it has persisted for about a year now) since it didn’t really bother me, but if that issue could be resolved as well, it would go a long way towards making my xanga experience better. Thanks for all the hard work you guys do.
i’ve noticed the edit html bug in firefox, too … pictures do upload in firefox … but trying to figure out what the url is for the picture is impossible in firefox without actually using internet explorer to put it in a web log entry … in the picture list, firefox doesn’t display the full directory … worse yet, you can’t copy and paste the directory url from the pop-up window in ie … even worse, the filename is a bunch of random numbers … and the directory and server is never the same and also is a bunch of random numbers
this makes editing skins a time consuming pain in the butt … i have to go through all this every time i change my background … i used to just have to type in the name of the picture that i gave it … if i had a graphics intensive site here, it would drive me crazy
How about leaving our damn pictures to the size they are, and not resizing them and making them look like crap? I’m about an inch from asking for my lifetime premium back. We have limited store for pictures, let us have our picture the damn size and quality they already are! What does that hurt you?

hey john, quick question: ever since I started to use Mozilla, my pictures don’t become “click-able” to its larger size in another window automatically anymore. (Previously, I used IE and when i would insert a picture, it would automatically add in the html). I have to go back into the Edit Html mode and actually put in the A href tag to make it “click-able.” Is this just an issue with my comp or with mozilla specifically? Is there a faster way to make sure the pictures are linked with their larger versions?
I just read your post, unfortunately I’m a 49 year old, visual artist and don’t understand half of what you just said…I was VERY happy with the former system cause it worked and I enjoy posting photo diaries…you know “pictures are worth a 1,000 words”. Hope xanga premium becomes user friendly again. Thanks

hey John, i prolly have a really dumb question but is there a way to get someone band from Xanga. There are some people putting very offensive comments on my site, and i block but they just come back with a different name, or sign my guestbook since blocking doesnt block them from that. They are also leaving rude comments to the people on my sub list. Please let me know what or if anything can be done. Thanks bunches!! And i LOVE xanga!

I think you have the potential here to accomodate everyone, well, at least up to a max optimum dimension of 800 pixels-and that’s pretty generous. I suppose your challenge is to 1) make it more user-friendly for the more code-challenged, and 2) make it clear that no one is losing anything.
I tested. And if I upload a pic with dimensions of 720 by 368 pixels, displaying with the swtich from ‘z’ to ‘b’ does, indeed, display it at 720 by 368 with full quality. But, in addition to changing the ‘z’ to ‘b’ as you mention in your FAQ, I also had to change the width=”400″ (the default for ‘z’) to width=”720″ (the actual width of my pic). In other words, just changing the img src-url from ‘z’ to ‘b’ is not enough. It’s really a two-step process.
But the fact remains that I CAN display my pic with full quality at whatever dimensions I choose to upload it with (up to a max of 800 px) IF I do the two-step shuffle.
I’m sure it’s the poor people who can’t shuffle that will remain befuddled. Unless you come up with a shuffle-wizard.
But I’m okay with it. And knowing how, in the long-run, you guys always come through, I expect things will get better, easier, and less buggy somewhere upon the blog horizon.
I just realized that another way to shuffle-it is to change the ‘z’ to ‘b’ as you mention in your FAQ AND then just delete the width= ‘ ‘ tag (or height = ‘ ‘, whichever). That’s a bit easier and furnishes the same result – that is, displaying the pic with its original dimensions and full quality.

Dear John,
I have always found 450pixels to be the optimum size for the images I feature on my blog posts. Is there any way that you could insert a “letter” code for 450. I used 400 (default) for my April 13th entry, and the photos “look” fabulous, and I appreciate the increased size of the “clicked” photos, but would really like to use 450 on my entries. By typing “450″ in the upload tool, the photos were a tad grainy, but that was a few days ago. I understand that you guys have been correcting the problems as they arrive. Good work.

hi! bit of trouble here ~ thought maybe you could help me out? earlier today i uploaded a photo, and everything was fine, but then later in the post when i went to upload more pictures, they weren’t loading. i thought maybe i had too many pictures in the photo manager, so i deleted a bunch of them, and my new pictures posted. last time i deleted pictures from the manager, all of my photos remained visible on my site, but now they are all empty boxes. are my pictures really gone, or is this some other kind of problem? any info you have would be greatly appreciated! thanks ~ justyn

letters that everyone hates. This one has been going since 1863 and if you
break this chain, you will pay!!!!!! Remember that after hearing these
stories.
First Example:
Take Barbra Wallace.. She was a pretty lucky girl,
up till she got this same chain letter. She had a crush on the same kid
since kindergarden. when she got this mail she didn’t pay any attention to
it. She just thought, no big deal. And deleted it. The next day her dad
got fired and her mom dies in a car crash. If she would have sent the
letter none of that would have happened and her mom would be alive.
Second Example:
Try Freddie D. Now Freddie D. was your average
nerd. Had glasses, was short and chubby, was in gifted. All the signs of
your total dork. He also received this letter and sent it to 51 people in
the hour. Now, like Barbra, he had a crush on a girl since 3rd grade. The
next day after sending the chain the girl confessed her love for him ever
since 3rd grade. Freddie D. finally had the courage to ask her out, and of
course, she had been waiting to yes to that for years. They grew up and
married each other to live happily forever.
Third Example:
Now if you couldn’t relate to the others, this’ll
get ya hooked. Listen to this. A kid named Jordan Johnson was just
getting on AOL to check his mail. He was a quiet kid, not that popular but
not a geek either. he was just normal. He saw he had mail from his
friend. It was this exact letter. Now Jordan Johnsen was a smart kid and
he knew what could happen if he didnt pass it on. He simply pulled a few
friends from his buddy list and sent it along. The next day, about that
same time, he got a phone call. It said he had won the lottery! then his
dad came home and bought him a new bike! His mom bought him Nintendo64 and
play station! His grandmother sent him a new computer, and his best friend
gave him tickets to the concert he wanted to go to, Kid Rock and Limp
Bizkit! Then he inherited a brand-new tv from his aunt! He was goin’ wild!
the next day his secret crush asked him out, and they have been going out
ever since.
Now, you heard the stories. I know which person i’d rather
be, but thats up to you. I wouldn’t wanna end up like Barbra but thats
only me. We all want what we cant have but now’s ur chance to go out with

For some odd reason, I’m not able to display or upload my pictures properly. Instead, I get the white box with a red X. Strangely enough, the picture I have right now works… Please look into this when you get the chance!

It was awesome. But now it’s not.
The damn server keeps making my pictures disappear, whether they are recent as in the past week, or two years old or however old. I am getting really annoyed and pissed off, as the server continues to lose my images, especially the ones that were originals on xanga’s server. I am wondering why I renewed my premium this year, as my main reason for having it is for the PICTURE FILES!

Hi, um, I was wondering how to get a blog archive.
i am not a happy camper with all of these changes. now nothing works. my pictures wont load, i have to create links to my pictures. i didnt pay for premium to have to do this. also, everytime i try to add color to my blog it wont let me, i have to click the edit box not working link and changing the border and the background is all it will let me do, then i have to save my entry and edit it to get the font the way i need it to be. i didnt pay for premium to have to deal with this either. these are the reasons why i havent paid for a lifetime membership, because yall keep messing around with stuff. please fix it soon, or im not gonna renew my premium cuz right now it isnt worth it.

So why – When i link to a pic elsewhere – or even my own previously uploaded pic – And i say to say – size it to 100 pixels wide – does it NOT do it – and just does what it likes? It will only resize a pic I am only uploading at that instant – And I wanna be able to link to other pics and resize them as i could before…

Gah…Is there any way possible that you can stop people from viewing your xanga period without using protected posting? I have 2 people who have left nasty comments on my site and I am sick and tired of it, all I want is to be able to write weblogs and let my friends comment without any hassles. If there is no way to fix this problem I am afraid I’m going to have to make it so my posts cannot be commented on.
If you could help me on this, that would be great. Xanga is awesome and I would love to stay here with my friends instead of leaving.

I don’t know if you’re the proper person to take this idea to, but I have been thinking for a while that it’d be killer to be able to leave comments on people’s entries from the “Read Your Subscriptions” page so you didn’t have to go to other people’s sites…

I have a question unrelated to your entry.
Recently,within the past few weeks codes ending in .mp3 stopped playing on my xanga.Codes that are playing on other people’s xangas wont play on mine.They all happen to end in .mp3. I read FAQ about music and none of it seems to apply.
I’ve even gone through my look and feel and erased some codes thinking they were effecting the music codes I’ve put.But nothing changed.

I have a suggestion. I think it would be a good idea if when a xanga user shuts down their site, that they are able to reactivate it within a certain number of days. THis happened to me last year. I accidentally deleted my site and then I had to make a new one. It’s a pain.

I’ve just discovered today that my javascript music player isn’t working anymore, as well as a few others, but some are working. Have you changed anything that might affect this? and how can I fix it?

Not sure if this is where to post it, but I’m having problems with the replace links code (I know it’s probably not your problem… but,) if I put in too many things for the links to replace, then the code doesn’t work at all. i.e. I used to have the code set up to change the names of all the people on my subscriptions list, but now that wont work because I have too many people there to replace all the links for names. If you can help that would be great if not, that’s fine, cause like I said I’m sure this isn’t your problem or something that concerns you.

I keep getting the message that my pics have to be less than 3mb. All the pics taken with my camera are less than 300kb. I can post some and not others…although the number I can post seems to be fewer and fewer. I didn’t have a problem before the changes.

Could you guys try and do some sort of setting where a person could set their Xanga to have the entries automatically go protected or private after a certain number of days (like after a month), mostly for privacy issues so that people can’t read back on everything that you have done for the past year and a half? Or something along those lines?

Hey, ummm, I am having super problems with the ‘looks and feel’ part of my xanga. Eveytime I try to get in to fix everything I get caught in this never ending loop and perpetually sent to a sign in page. I tryed to investigate myself but there wasn’t any information under the title of “Why am I being asked to sign in everytime I try to get into my ‘looks and feel’”.
