  • RELAUNCH 3.0?

    We’re continuing to get great feedback on our Look & Feel relaunch… so we’ve tweaked it again to reflect your thoughts:

    • We increased the amount of time you have to edit Look and Feel before asking you to sign-in again
    • We fixed an issue that crashed some Mac Internet Explorer browsers when they accessed the Look & Feel page
    • We made it easier to find the “Trim” setting
    • We fixed a page width issue that caused bugs in some browsers

  • i guess i was ignored for when i wrote that suggestion awhile ago…let me try it one more time. When choosing a color in look and feel…people tend to forget what color they used. So i suggest that when a person choose a color…the color box would be highlighted so that you know what color you are useing.

  • Hey John I was so excited to see the entry…so I went to try right away. It is still crashing my xanga. Still cannot access look and feel.
    Also the last few days, some of my pictures are not showing up after making a comment, I can not get to all of the pictures.

  • Oh, I was trying to figure out what is wrong with my page that when I use IE on Macs that my look and feel site has a black background. I don’t think it’s my code, but I will check it again, just something that was weird that I had never noticed until these changes came up. I use a Mac at work and it was getting frustrating, so I don’t know if it’s something on my end or what. Just thought I would make a note on it.

  • This afternoon my Xanga site was OK… This evening it’s way too wide, with no changes from me in the meantime. Probably your “fixing” the page width issue… I’m having the problem with a Netscape 7.2 browser on Windows XP SP2, by the way.

  • is it at all possible to make it so that we have the option of displaying a certain number of entries on each page? The default seems to be 5 entries per page but I’d like to be able to customize.

  • i hate to say something that everyone probably knows, but does one have to have premium to have like little popup thingys when  a person goes to and leaves their site, like, “hi, welcome, vote for me,” or “come back soon,” ??

  • yes it is very nice. And I like how you put a hover thing for links now. I think you should add a feature were, you can border your xanga entry’s with like dotted, dashed etc.. And for the whole resizing the xanga on the page, I don’t get what it does it doesn’t resize my xanga? Like if you can add a scrollbar to it so its like you can resize you xanga to whatever you want, and you get a scrollbar that can be optional. Thank You all keep up the good work!

  • with the new set up its easier to know what changes you are makin with out havin to go back and forth, …………but signing into look and feel is just weird because we are already signed in there is no need to sign in again

  • sometimes the saved javascript text will have ampersands and double quotes converted into html character references when i go to re-edit them. i don’t remember it doing that before the whole new l&f came around (which i do like).

    i wouldn’t mind having even wider text boxes on that edit page.

    There’s a xanga that somebody created about me, and it’s really rude and offensive. There seem to be a lot of those xangas but..I don’t know who it is. They don’t have their name on the site. Is there anyway that it could be deleted or shut down? If so could you please because theres no reason for it to be up. Thank you

  • just awesome. if you have comcast, and viewing in internet explorer, you’re set to go.

    one issue. :D

    when you click “save changes”, it shoudl just go to your private xanga. most of the time when people want to see a css code, they want to see if it came out right. having to click “changes saved. click here to preview [something like that]” could get annoying.. if it was just save changes, then redirected to private, i bet it would make it easier for most xangans.

  • my only problem with the “new look and feel” thing is that the color key isnt there any more…. you cant really pick the colors you want unless you know the colors by heart… or you nkow the pattern, which alas, noone has given me that information.

  • The new look and feel is alright, doesn’t make much difference to me. Although, I would very much like to have the “Revert to Default” button back. It just makes things so much easier =).

  • John, this is an ryc on the bloglines cache issue. If Xanga enables RSS feeds, then why aren’t people being told? That’s the real issue…especially when people are thinking they have control over their posts by changing them to private. Other blog services do notify users of what RSS is, and in the case of the one I am switching to, they give people the option to opt out.

    Also, given the wacky selection of posts that wind up on servers like bloglines, I’d say that RSS is not working the way it’s supposed to over here. Food for thought. I’d like to see Xanga users given a bit better information on what they are getting themselves into here.

  • Here’s a test: slightly edit/change one your ‘RSS viewable’ private blogs.  Also change another ‘RSS viewable’ private post by updating the timestamp.  Keep both private.  If any time later (tonight, tomorrow) the one appears with the change or the other one appears with the new timestamp, it’s definitely a security exploit. Otherwise, it would tend to support your ‘caching hypothesis.  I’d do this myself, but I don’t have any ‘RSS viewable’ private posts!

  • i have a quesiton for you that is totally unrelated to your entry–

    what happens to people sites after they don’t use them in a long time? a lot of the user names that are very simple (and envied over) were picked up in 1999 or 2000, and not even used since then. A lot of these are not premium either, just simple trials that they gave up on. Please let me know if any of these become accessible after a long period of no use, because i would be very interested in a few. Please reply with an answer if you can- either on my site OR by email (which you would have if you run the site). Thanks.

    I did not find this appropriate, and I think some sort of action should be taken against him.  Yes, I did call him names, but I never threatened him.  I can take being called names, but I think he crossed the line when he threatened me.  I just wanted to know if there is anything that can be done.  If not, I guess I’ll just be pissed off and live with it.

  • I just wanted to let you guys know that xanga rocks so freakin hardcore. If I didn’t have xanga…I’d die. Seriously… I would stab myself in the hand with a freakin fork… Dang forks…always causing problems.

  • I have an idea. Make a popup “Xanga Radio” that stores the URLs of visited blogs. I had this idea because sometimes it’s really annoying that a song gets cut off when you are jamming and you have you comment ready and POOF silence. Then you forget what your comment was. If you get tired of the song it could have a skip feature. It would also need to display the song URL and the username of the person who has chosen this song.
    Hope this idea helps in some odd way.

  • when i want to preview or save changes on LOOK&FEEL i cant. it says cant find page or theres a bug. i also cant post any weblogs. is there anyway to fix this?

  • Firefox seems to have a problem with blogging, under “edit HTML”. If you press a key, say “M”, the “m” appears a few characters before where the cursor actually is. It doesn’t happen in IE, just Firefox.

    It’s not essential to fix or anything, it’s just annoying.

    Noted today that linking to Slashdot on Xanga does not work.
    It automatically tacks on a /index.shtml and makes the load fail, because /. does not like that.
    The code I am using: < a href=”http://slashdot.org/”>Slashdot< /a> (Without the spaces of course.)
    I’ve tried it on several other mainstream sites with no problems.
    This problem revealed itself when I tried the link both in a post and elsewhere on my Xanga page.
    Haven’t noticed this with any other sites, even other sites in OSDN, the network that Slashdot is part of.
    Because this snippet works on many other sites, I must conclude it’s an error in Xanga.

  • Hey John, I have a suggestion. You know what would be really cool? If there was some button that could be used to automatically link selected words to a Google search (or some other search engine, but Google is preferrable).   • As I said about the previous change…  Great job, Xanga Team!  In my personal, humble opinion, I believe that most people who use Xanga use the “freebie” Xanga.  I am included in that majority, and I think that it’s OK for us to make suggestions, but to just say that the changes suck isn’t fair.  You guys work VERY hard to give many people a free place to blog, and I think they should just be thankful it’s available.  It continually gets better, and your team does an incredible job…  Thanks for giving me a place to vent, to leave messages for my kids, and to just be me.  Those of us (myself included) who don’t pay for the Premium Xanga should be thankful they have a place to blog and have fun. 

  • I’ve been away from Xanga since February 11th-ish, so I came back to a great and wonderful surprise!  It was exactly what I was wishing Xanga had!  Great job!!

  • The photos are also loading slowly on my other site (sonotcool), which are all protected posts with no smiley script. A few others, such as deliad, have mentioned slow loads as well. I appreciate you attempt at improving the photo system overall, but am I going to be able to post full size (no larger than 800 pixels wise) photos on my site again. I can’t figure out this odd coding. So far, I am uploading to other blog hosts and linking my photos from there.

    I speak for just myself but i do believe that most of the girls on xanga would agree with me. There is a user harrasing mostly just the girl user. She is leaving rude comments and subscribing to the sites. Just wondering if you can do anything about it. The user is nicoledasexxyfish.

    I have a huge problem….when I try to add a picture…it tells me to wait 3 minutes and it attempts to download it…then the screen disappears and I cant download anything.  Its been going on for the past 2 days now.  What do I do?   The images are small so I dont know why it wont…and I do have Premium.  PLEASE HELP!

  • Also, another way to implement Look & Feel is to encase every different type of… stuff… in a div tag and then allow users to just change the CSS, for lazy users like me ;) . You can see this applied at csszengarden.com. Then, people could upload external .CSS files, and trade them around, kinda like skins.

  • i should have wrote earlier, but it is very convenient this way. so i don’t have to use a skin or html all the time. thanks for all your hard work, i do like the old software better, but this new color instant design thing is quite convenient. i guess people didn’t really care to have so many colors and ways to design. lol. but it is very convenient and thanks for all you guys’ hard work in this new xanga design system.

  • i have a question how come now when i got xanga the music things never work and they never work on mine now to

  • i hate the added security. it takes up more time, and just aggrivates me when i have to re-enter my name & password again. most of the time, i only have time to just quickly get my xanga fixed up, and then i’m on the go. adding that stupid little feature was not a good idea in my book. just letting you know.
