  • NEW EQUIPMENT AND SCHEDULING DOWNTIME

    We’re not sure what it is, but ever since the Great Blizzard last
    week… our traffic has been super, super high.  Maybe everyone
    was trapped indoors like us, and spent their days typing away on the
    computer?

    In any case, we’ve been crushed by traffic -
    especially in the evenings. We’ve been planning on putting some new
    equipment in soon, but now we’re just gonna do it ASAP.  This Friday
    Saturday morning, we’ll be installing new equipment from 6:30-8:00 am
    EST (during which time, the site will be unavailable).  Then on Saturday Sunday morning, we’ll be taking the site down for about 4-5 hours (starting at 4 am) six hours (starting at 6 am – see below for details).

    Just a head’s up that Xanga will be down for maintenance super early on both Friday Saturday and Saturday Sunday morning.  We’ll keep you posted on how the maintenance goes each day!

    FRIDAY MORNING UPDATE: The equipment is taking a bit longer to install,
    so we’re going to move the maintenance down a day to Saturday and
    Sunday morning.  The maintenance should take the same amount of
    time, but just one day later… sorry about the confusion!

    SATURDAY
    UPDATE: All the new equipment is in!  The morning maintenance ended
    up starting later than we had hoped: roughly from 8:30-11:30 am. 
    And as you probably noticed, we’ve had a rough time configuring the
    equipment to handle the evening load .  But we’re making a lot
    of progress!  And the maintenance for tomorrow is still scheduled
    to move forward, although just to be safe we’re going to plan on 6
    hours of maintenance starting at 6 am EST.  If the maintenance
    finishes earlier than that (and we’re hopeful it will!), than we’ll
    bring the site back up as soon as it’s stable.

    SUNDAY UPDATE: The site is back up, and steadily becoming more
    stable.  There are some outstanding issues that we’re addressing
    now, so tonight may be a little bumpy… but we’re ticking the issues
    off one by one, and making steady progress.  We’ll post an update
    tomorrow…

  • I have noticed Xanga slowing down alot in the evenings lately so now I know why. I have also been getting alot of the pages with the its seems you have found a bug when I am trying to access my site or others or page cannot be displayed. Thanks for the advance warning that  Xanga will be down for maintenance I will make sure I let my other xanga friends know also in case they do not pay attention to your notice posted on the sign in page. BTW I am so addicted to xanga that I would wait until the cows came home for my page to load just so I can post. I can’t wait to test drive  Xanga after the maitenance is complete…..Good Luck!

  • Maybe… it’s all the hard core porn sites getting thousands of hits a day and dragging the site down?  Could THAT be it?

    No, of course not.

    I’m a premier member with 5 months left on my account paid but I’m leaving xanga in protest of the porn you do not protect young kids from here.  I have already found another blogging community that strangely enough doesn’t have this problem.  You talk about ratings..  How about doing something? ANYTHING!!!!

    Instead of upping your bandwidth, how about following Xanga’s own rules on abuse by shutting down the porn sites?  Here’s Xangas policy that I’m sure your familiar with:

    Generally, there are three main reasons that we will shut down a site:

    <LI>It exists solely to abuse or stalk another member (or ethnic group)
    <LI>It contains an explicit death threat (or physical threat) to another person
    <LI>It is blatantly pornographic

    But wait a minute.. what you really mean is you’ll take it off Featured Content as if that will prevent minors (which make up over half of your users) from viewing such sites.  Xanga allows porn blogrings, so they are very easy to find or accidentally go to. Which is it, really?

    You will be busted eventually for this, you know that don’t you? You’ve already admitted you know about the porn sites and when you took them off Featured Content. Even yahoo and MSN adults groups make the user at least lie and say they are 18 so they can prepare for what they’re about to see. 

    FFS, these are kids we’re talking about!! KIDS!  Let the adults have their porn just protect the kids from it.

    All week last week, HOT97 aired this song during the Miss Jones morning show and was featured under “FUNNY” on the hot97 website.

    They played these choice words into the theme of “We are the world”

    “All at once you could hear the screaming ch*nks and no one was safe from the wave there were Africans drowning, little chinamen swept away you could hear god laughing, ‘swim you b*tches swim’”
    “So now you’re screwed, it’s the Tsunami, you better run or kiss your ass away, go find your mommy, I just saw her float by, a tree went through her head, and now the children will be sold to child slavery…”

    And up till now, no real punishments have been handed down.

  • Hmmm—since today when xanga was down for maintenance it has been working worse than ever!  What’s going on???  Ever since it came back up today it’s moving at turtle rate and I constantly keep getting those “you’ve found a bug” messages!!!  Hoping you’ll get things back to normal tomorrow????

I have to take this chance to thank you guys for a great site, and a perfect setup. And thanks for letting the poor people stay on for free.   • i think xanga needs a suggestion box, because i want to make a suggestion but i’ve no clue where to make it, so i’m making it here.

    on the feedback log, i think it would be useful to have an option of more continuous logging. like, every day at midnight, take off the eprops, comments, guestbook entries, subscriptions that were given on the day that was 7 days previous instead of resetting feedback to 0 every sunday. it would give a more accurate representation of the amount of feedback a site gets in a week.

    did that make sense?

  • I’m having a lot of trouble with xTools.  I was finally able to post with the basic, but my premium features won’t work, and most of the graphics aren’t showing up either right now.

  • well-done for the fixing, though i don’t really understand what this new equipment stuff means. i was sad when i tried to get on today and couldn’t, but i got over it. as for this blizzard, in chicago we don’t even bat an eyelash at it. yes, i had school all week despite the feet of snow. oh, to live in california…

  • There were some DB problems earlier, but it’s all good now. The Xanga servers run at surprisingly brisk speeds, good job folks. Equipment, as in more server clusters?

    I’m writing this after the “scheduled” maintenance. The “reviews” links work from my own site to my own reviews, but correspondents cannot get the link to work on my site, and I can’t get to other reviews sections on other Xanga blogs. Hopefully, you folks already know this and are working on the problem.

  • wow, i somehow get the feeling you might not actually get to read my comment but it’s all good. i’ve been having problems with editing subscriptions — i try to change from the daily digest thing to email only but it doesn’t work.

  • not to sound like a dick, but whatever you did has totally screwed xanga up. I have barely been able to use the site since last week.. i keep getting bugs, Error 404s, or just plain crashes. it’s intolerable.

  • Just to give you a sense (not to complain): there are timeout issues, “bugs”, and some huge delays since the upgrade. I asked a good friend if it could just be my laptop, my OS, my experience.  “No,” she said, “everyone has noticed a huge amount of dysfunction (since the upgrade).” 

  • I’m sure it will get fixed. My main point of posting here is to that people will visit my site. Come visit.
