I thought we'd respond to some comments from the last post!
BOXED XANGAS
The ad wasn't bothering my layout at all, but I guess you moved the position of the ad again? I have a modified xanga ... and the ad is blocking me from adding another entry. ... The ad is also blocking my date. =/

L1lstah - I see you're using a Boxed Xanga look? There was some bad HTML in the codes, so Marc fixed it up for you. Hope it looks better!
To any Xangans with a Boxed Xanga: if you see the ad covering part of your site, odds are that there's some bad HTML somewhere in the Look and Feel? You can generally fix it up by adding a close DIV, SPAN, or TABLE tag to the end of your site.

At first we thought Cbox was related to Chatterbox, but it turns out they're totally unrelated! Phew, all the ChatterBoxes are still working. Anyway we looked into Cbox and it turns out that they requires an IFRAME... but we can't allow iframes, for security reasons. (Remember that lame blogworm that auto-posted itself from site to site? That used an iframe). Anyone know the guys at Cbox? If they can switch to standard JavaScript instead of an IFRAME, then we'll definitely add them to our list of trusted scripts!

Quite a few people made this point. We're not quite yet in a place where we can take out our banner ads, or move them to the bottom of the page. We'll keep looking for alternatives. In the meantime, please don't strip our ads!

If you're premium, then your blinkies and falling objects should still work? But yah definitely, we agree that these should be available for everybody! We're trying to find alternate ways to enable these Script Codes, without re-opening Pandora's Box. It's a tough problem, but we've got some possibilities cookin'.
One last note: we read every single comment, and visit many of your pages to see the impact of any changes on your sites. So keep the comments coming... and rest assured, we do read each and every one!

yea... thanks for all you do. i just deleted all the other stuff that stopped working. i already had a new layout planned.... i guess when the blinky boxes,etc were gone... it was finally time for me to put up my new layout. lol.

hey john! i just wanted to say that xanga is an awesome site, with the changes or without. (i have the free premium trial right now, but i'm losing it in a few days.) you guys do an amazing job keeping up with everyone, i gotta give props to that. it would be really really really nice if you could find some sorta code to keep those spiffy blinky boxes for everyone but ooh well. keep it up & take care! <333
hey, i never used any scripts that messed with my site, so i don't have a problem witht the new security measures, they're gladly welcomed by me, and i jsut wnated to say even though ive ben using xanga less and less lately, its still a great thing that you have going, and i have many a friend who post religously , and would probably have an aneurysm if it went away. so thanks for all the hard work, and i think the creative genius behind xanga is brilliant, espcially the way you respond to ppl's problems as quickly as possible, and you are so courteous. thanks again

RAWRRR THIS WHOMPS!!! I don't understand why some individuals should feel that xanga is a medium to perpetuate acts of malicious evil. I will not deny that humans are not venal by nature because we are.
I will not also deny that I DID try to eliminate the ad remover before... but that was BEFORE I was aware that it is the obstruction of having a "free xanga" and shortly after learning this from http://www.blogring.net and http://www.xanga.com/add_ons. I ceased to look for an add remover javascript since. = Is there not any way that the codes for the status bar/falling objects/blinkies be changed around so that it could show but not compromise the security measures? I miss the writing I had for the status bar.
Another note: every time I "Preview" my page, more than half the box asking, "Save These Changes?" appear hidden behind the banner for some unaccountable reason. I'm not sure whether it is the possibility that I have certain html codes in my xanga or not. It has nothing to do with the code for the words on the status bar still being being there.
I'm still having trouble with my xanga i have a box layout too but im wondering what the bug is in it. It buggin lol well i hope you can help...I deleted some extra boxes i had to make it look better but i want them back though so i can hold many other stuff in Divided boxes. PLEASE HELP!!! John, I was just auto-subscribed to http://www.xanga.com/home.aspx?user=noads. I received an email asking to join this Xangan's blogring which is against blocking scripts. I think you should take a look at that site. You may be interested in what is posted. Thank you for all of your hard work.
You people are okay in my book. All of those comments kept you busy a while I'm sure of that. If you make all those fixes, you will make some people happy and I hope you can but myself, I'm not interested in all the scripting that makes it harder to download and read a page. I like to see what's on the page and try to make sure people don't have any problems when they are visiting. I guess it's age that takes you to that point? After the fact, I love security and appreciate all the work being done in Xanga to make it a safe place to surf.

After reading the above comment from simplywriting, I had to go see the page. I don't know if he has done all of what he says but I can tell you I was auto-subscribed to his site. I checked it right away and it is in my list. Have fun guys, it's just like fighting terrorists and Xanga has their share.

javascript has such an inherently bad security model, there's no way we can offer perfect security without a much less flexible system
. that's why we're the only blogging/community site out there that supports codes... i'll post more about this later.
Okay, I've taken out the scripts...
I took out the auto-sub, auto-blogring, and of course the ad-stripper. I also removed the ad-at-the-bottom site, since you said you're "not quite yet in a place where we can take out our banner ads, or move them to the bottom of the page".
Did you want me to take out the coolAds script too? It doesn't move or remove the ads, just makes the ads not look so bad on a darker site.
Sorry to whine (oops... that's what I do best. Nevermind.), but my sitemeter isn't working at the moment. I looked at a few other people's, and their's are also out of commission. Is this because of the new changes?

one problem i have is - my css code, does not work with a background, im so sick of it. Live Journal doesnt disable things like this...so why dont i just quit xanga? I have a whole community of friends who joined xanga because of me - whats the point if its not gonna let me make a proper layout? answer that.
i like the ad on the top tho. maybe u should make it an option in Look & Feel of where ppl want their ad placed.

Also - you have probably heard about this before, but I think that if xanga included an ad formatter that people would be much less opposed to the ads and less inclined to go for ad removers. An ad formatter would allow the users to have an ad that wouldn't clash too much with the background or look too out of place. A simple script allowing us to change the background color of the ad would suffice. Thanks
heh... one more thing. would it increase the server load to much to increase the number of comments variable to something greater than an 8 bit variable (1 byte char)? As rare as it is, it does sometimes occur that people get more than 255 comments. The last entry you posted was one of these. haha.
Ah. And as for the blinky boxes and other such scripts that got disabled, perhaps if xanga had external javascript .js files that coded for these scripts they could be reenabled? I'm not 100% clear as to how the new security measures work and if they pertain to external .js files...

cbox actually does have a separate snippet for Xanga.. on the snippet page, you click Using Xanga? but then I have one more comment. would it be possible to put the chatterbox on the left side column? I've seen this but dont know how to do it.

I am proud to be a xanga member because you guys in admin take the time to read so many comments and take into consideration many of the suggestions you guys get, especially when the majority of these suggestions are coming from non-paying users. couldn't u just restrict the ad-remover? it would be a lot easier to just restrict those and leave the other codes that don't do ne harm alone the way they were. it's not fair to penalize everyone for just those people who use ad-remover.

Well John, I hope you can hold true to your word when you say that you read every comment. I'm considering buying a lifetime premium membership, but there is one thing stopping me. Although I've read of the possibility of allowing usernames to be changed, I want to be guarenteed that this will happen sometime in the near future. Then, in pondering about the aftermath of such a change, I wanted to point out that it would be most helpful to make this change in such a way that the username would change accordingly on the subscription list of all of whom are suscribed to a person who changes his or her username. Without this feature, an annoying and eventually all-too-frequently-seen page stating the inexistance of an account will be needed. I just thought of another thing John. Although you may not be the head kahuna for this seemingly large operation, i thought, "Wait... wouldn't it be confusing to a subscriber who see's a brand new name on his or her subscription list?" Then I thought of the perfect fix. Add a small icon (similar to what eBay does) that identifies a username as newly changed, that lasts for a week or so (hey, this can even be used to identify new members)! While you awesome people are at it, why not creating a viewable history of the names that a person has gone through that is optional for public or private view? I hope my suggestions are helping in some way or another, hopefully I can be the proud owner of a lifetime premium account sometime soon while i can afford it.

well, top.. bottom.. either way, the ad is still very much noticeable. i think the general consensus of most xangans would say that the ad looks better at the top. the last time you guys experimented with the ad being at the bottom, it pissed off a lot of people. mainly because it messed up the html coding of our sites.. and that's a very effective way of pissing people off (if you ahvem't notcied already). but.. whatever, it's your site, you guys can do whatever you wish with it.

Okay... I don't really know if this is where I should be posting this; however, when I go to change something using the "Look And Feel", there's a slight problem... It's not really anything major but whenever I click the "Preview" button at the bottom, the ad ends up covering up my pop-up block that asks whether or not I want to save the changes. I end up having to scroll way down to the bottom in order to save or cancel the changes. It's not really all that big of a problem but it is rather annoying whenever you're going back and forth trying to check out scripts to see if they'll work. Can you possibly check on this for me? Good day to you! One thing I did notice was that my alphabetize code for the "sites I read" stopped working a few months ago. I remember that it use to alphabetize all the formatted links (in my case the name of the person). Other than that, all systems go. Oh and you guys do a great job! Thanks!

Ive emailed xanga many times about an abuse problem for over half a year now, and they never respond.
A friend of mine is being harassed by these sites. Although they might not have been updated lately, people can still see them, and therefore, harass this person even so.
Please shut these sites down. They are causing great chaos in this person's life. The sites are im_the_real_branden_iwane and im_branden_iwane. Thanks.
I understand perfectly what you are saying about the cbox's thats why i MADe mine work...i only got rid of it because my trial was up because i like them much better than the flooble chatterboxes. If you take the Iframe from the Cbox and make it java script wouldnt that make it like chatterbox, completely defeating the purpose of getting one...Just a question.

I commented the day you posted but am returning with another comment. I reported that I had to be nosy and visit a certain site and that on going there I had been auto subscribed to his pages. Today, I discovered I had also been auto subscribed to his ring. Therefore, I am reporting that he also has a script that auto subscribes you to his webring. That webring I have removed myself from the ring. It's an embarrassment to me that it was listed in my webring module for the length of time that it was.
i'm missing my falling snowflakes. also, my marquees aren't working, it would be great if you can fix the problems/find the alternatives. i absolutely adore my xanga, but now that some of the things are gone, i'm terribly heart-broken.

i have a little problem with my xanga .. its not really THAT big, but it definitely is annoying me. for some reason, it appears that whenever the xanga ad loads on my xanga it resizes my page. there's a left-to-right scrollbar that appears, and im confused because it hasnt happened before.
hmmm there was a funny time when i'd change my look and feel, the little box that says 'save these changes' would hide a bit under the xanga ad. i'm not sure which xanga this was (i have 4 of them). but i believe it was hiddenchibimoon.
and there were times when the xanga ad would be at the bottom of the page of my xanga (this would apply to all of my xangas) but then eventually, it'd be at the top again.

Why dont you make the ad a popup?
Anyone who's having problems with the "Save these changes?" thing on the CLAF preview, I've made a temporary fix!
Also, about that "Save These Changes?" issue, try scrolling to the bottom of your screen. The "Yes" and "No" buttons are repeated down there too.

a popup would be a good idea... But most people hate popups because they're intrusive. Some people prefer the banner over a popup. Also, I bet most people have pop-up blockers installed (the google toolbar is one itself, and mozilla has one built-in!). Lastly, I notice a lot of people in the habit of clicking the "X" on any popup windows before they've even had a chance to load....
What's the proper way to pronounce "Xanga"? Some friends and I were debating this.

I don't like the ads at the bottom. At a certain point in xangatime, they were at the bottom. I didn't like that at all. Also, xanga is really nice and I'm glad that you have this going for us all. Anybody giving you 0 propz deserves to be smacked. Literally. One more note:
Many sites offer music, but they are being punished for helping us and end up shutting down. PLEASE take this into consideration and come up with a place on xanga that the music is given out legally and we can use them for our sites.

Because of these new security measures, I'm forced to use the music slot that you give me instead of using the javascript codes I like to use so people and choose, stop, or play a song. I think it gets annoying when a song is in the background because:
1. you can't stop the music
2. whenever you navigate through their page (past entries, etc.) the song has to start all over again
If in someway you can allow some of the music codes at blogring.net (ie: "Play/Stop Music w/o bar or buttons" and "Music Control Link") I would greatly appreciate it!!!!
Making it a popup is a bad idea. Lots of people have popup blockers now.

another thing.. most of your "good" layouts.. are too fancy. i'd rather have a plain default page than your layouts with the falling pictures and what not. get a sense of dignity and style.. sophistication doesn't have too many scripts..

I was just wondering what was up with all these pop ups around xanga. They're getting really annoying. It's so hard to maneuver around my site anymore that updating and checking things is a hassle. Is there a way to do away with that stuff, at least for premium members if not for everyone?

hey, i just thought i'd let you know that you can still get rid of the banner. i did it on accident, and put it back. i just pretty much did an img {display:none;} kind of thing. you probably won't have much of a problem with that one though... lol, cause then they won't have ANY pictures. but yeah, i just wanted to let you know that you may want to fix that.

Hey john from Xanga, I looked at my Xanga today and noticed that the add covered the top part of my Xanga page. I don't know if it's bad html or if there's something about the add which I don't think there is, but do you think you could fix that on my page? I have only some knowledge of HTML but not enough to fix this. Oh yeah, I was wondering when we will be able to put in rotating pix as our profile pic for example, a GIF image with 3 flashing images.

I have a question. I used to be able to change the color of my font in my posts, but I cannot now (that's not the question). I put the html code in, and it looks great when I uncheck the edit HTML box on my edit page, but when I submit, the colors are gone (that's not the question either). Why is that (that's the question

All the comments page in my xanga got the same problem........the ad on the top went to the right side instead of the centre.......it make my page look much more wider...this really bother me...can u help me to fix it?? thanks a lot

I know that it is difficult working with people that like to stretch the codes for evil purposes, but is there some sort of way that you could just punish the one's that abuse them? I miss the stuff i had in my site...the status bar doesnt work, almost any javascript code i had is useless. Is there any way at all to change stuff so only certain codes are blocked? I just think that if people are going to be retarded, then that is their problem...We all never did anything wrong! I understand how you need your adds up and i agree with the personalizing of them...that way people can have it go with the theme of the site and they won't try to pull it off. I personally don't mind if it is there, but I'm not everyone else. I understand that you are trying to make this site better for everyone, but can we have our codes back?!? John, I thought you said you read every comment? If this way true, I would have thought that http://www.xanga.com/home.aspx?user=HORNYGIRL would have been deleted by now. That xanga is in clear violation of the xanga ToS.

i don't know if the change in the allowance of script codes affected my xanga or what, but it seems as if the ad on top is blocking the "save changes - yes or no" box when i preview any changes i've made for my xanga. maybe it's bad html. either way.. can you guys take a look? :T it's unfortunate that the blinky boxes must go -___- and still i love xanga.. good job guys

I am having a problem. Everytime I try to visit my site private and public, my virus scanner finds a trojan. I know that I never put a trojan on my page. I think it may be coming from the pop-up surrounding my page. I can't do anything because once I delete the trojan, I get a windows error in the program, and the program closes. Is there anything I can do about that?

Why can't i be able to have messages scroll in the status bar. And why can't i have falling images, these restrictions are a pain. Your taking away the uniqueness of our xanga's. Now everyone's is going to be the same.
I don't have the time to read all of the comments so I apologize if this is redundant. Regarding the ad boxes, I think that I'd prefer it to be on the bottom of the site, but that's irrelevant. Would it be possible to make a feature where one can choose where on the website he or she wants the ad to appear? (top, bottom..) I'm probably not the first one to suggest this, and it's a possibility that this just isn't practical, but I figured that it would be worth a try.
i cant get the profile pic.... i pressed the link for the profile pic... but it goes to a page that says "youve found a bug" and says" the page you selected does not EXIST on xanga" how do i fix this?

Thank you for the link you left on my page for the hot bar site. I never realised they were recoring what I search for and where I go. It is such a cool program to add backgrounds and animations to your emails, but you obviously pay for it by getting 10 spam mails an hour from it.
Also, its nice to read that you are going to be trying to work a way around adding the scripts for blinkie boxes, image slide shows and the others that got deleted. You do try hard to keep your users happy and that shows in the time you take to personally read each comment left and to reply to them where appropriate. It takes alot of time to maintain a site as large as xanga, i hope you get paid for it

i was trying to find a way to contact someone about this.. but I can't email under any of the right cateogories listed.. so i figured i'd just post a comment on 2 ideas:
*Do you think there's an easy way to print out blogs? Or perhaps maybe there should be a print blog feature or something where you could chose which dates to print?... or print one by one? I've been wanting to print blogs for a while and i've found that it would take me much too long to copy and paste every 5 entries into Word or something when i've got about 50 pages worth......
*AaAnd... i can't figure out how to get access to all my blogs at once. for example if i wanted to go back and make all my blogs private except for the current date... i would have to go through them all manually and click the private/public link on each separate blog, correct? But Maybe there should be some kind of way to get a macro view of one's blogs and control the private/public thing from there? that way privatizing and publiscizing (i wouldn't know how to spell that) blogs would be easier (for people who want to mass privatize/publicsize). I really don't like clicking the private button... waiting for the page to load... then going down to the next blog n doing the same.. actually.. i could live with it. but i'm sure there are a few others with this problem.

I was wondering....is there a code that you add to your web statics to let you know WHO exactly visits your page each day? For example: AsianAvenue's personal "page log."
i dont know if your doing this already, but just a suggestion.. maybe you should limit how many xangas one can make to a certain email, because 1. people are constantly making new xangas to get a trial for premium. 2. its incredibly annoying to have people change xangas over and over again. and 3. its taking up usernames.

The main thing I have with the ad is that it's very rarely an actual ad...it's a thing about how to work Xanga, like a link to the FAQ. Sometimes it's for Amazon, but it's always a Xanga related thing. And I like that.

I have a problem with this because when i try to modify my xanga, it blocks the top 'save these changes' thing. I cant do that anymore, and i cant see some of my date. or some of my other stuff. If you could help any that would be great..

i found a bug in xanga... there are 2 comments on an entry in my xanga... i added a comment and then deleted it and then it said there was 1 comment, but it still showed the two comments... i tried it again and now it says 'no comments'...
could you possible have the profile picture posted on the 'read my profile' part of the site? because i have removed the sidebar, and still want to have my picture somewhere on the site. thanks
Umm . . . just thought I'd point this out. When previewing the "look and feel" changes, and I'm on the preview with the little box that asks if I like the preview or not, the box itself is underneath the xanga ad! Glitch? Who knows . . .

Suggestion: Visiting a lot of xangas, I noticed that at least 60% of the xanga I viewed played music, which is on a loop and cannot be stopped. I was wondering if there was some way of xanga creating a player module. There is no standard code for it yet (although historically, I think IE and Netscape use to allow some kind of universal code…I forget); Flash, QT, or Real based scripts need to be used (I use QT on my xanga skin). Unfortunately, to the common user, using these scripts is just as hard as speaking in Latin. I use xanga because it is so easy to use and fun. Other users probably use it for the same reasons, but I over generalize…Anyway, there must be some way of integrating a proper music script for users that allows for playback, stop, and forward of some kind...So yeah, what I’m asking xanga to do is…Revolutionize the way we play music on websites!

uuuuh...hi xanga-man....i was just wondering, i'm SURE you've gotten like 2764298347102497 comments about this and here's another one: i KNOW this must be a lot of trouble for you but would it be possible if you could move the xanga banner to the SIDE? like the right side? or the left side? and when you position your xanga, why is there no 'right side'? i have a div layer xanga and it is positioned to the right side, and the banner is at the top, and if it was just positioned on the right side that would be GREAT!!! ok i'm done.

Ok i have been a member for sometime, I have to admit that I use a banner remover script at one point but I only used it for a day or so just to see how my layout would look with premuim (it isnt the layout that is on my xanga right now). Instead of striping it I decided to change the opacity of it to 85% so you could still see the ad very easily but you could also faintly see the background behind it. I have been involved in writing a few codes to do thing like move the banner by removing it but have the link of the banner still there. I am sorry if I have broken the rules and caused the removal of javascript but the fact that we have this banner across the top is very unatractive. I really do love xanga and am a supporter, and have beem for a long time. Unfortunitly due to the fact that you have indeed disabled majority of the javascript I have started to think of using some other host, maybe some other paid host. Part of the reason i would choose a paid host over xanga's paid hosting is because you have it set up so that you cant just have a html site your forced to over write what xanga has already programed. Xanga is really falling behind in the paid hosting aspect, thus the reason that I have not become a premium member. I know you guys are real strict about the xanga banner ads and I know this guy who I have told several times its against the rules to make up codes to remove the banner ads and he refuses to listen, so here is his site for you:

Wait. How does that block ads? My codes never blocked them... and why can't you just punish the people that DID block the ads? It's their fault. Why take out the priveledge of being able to use these codes when a lot of people didn't even do anything??? I think its unfair. VERY.

As a rebuttal to Sv2, I have found many ways to work around Xanga parameters and my xanga looks just fine. Where there is a will, there is a way. One in awhile I do come across scripts that don’t work, (i.e. chatterbox), but I guess that never really has been something that bother me. I just keep my guestmap around for people to chat on. But my point is…I don’t think xanga is such a terribly unmoving system/service.
Is there any way to rename people on my subscriptions list? (i.e. Changing "XXjohnny_46XX" to appear as just "john")... Do I need xanga premium to be able to do this?

i was thinking that you should add more options to the free xanga sites because they all get boring and look the same and not everyone has the time or money to buy a premium...i understand that you need people to buy and use premium for the site to remain in operation but it would be nice to be able to have more options on a free xanga.

Maybe it's just me, but when I go to preview-mode in the CLAF, the top "save these changes" box is 95% blocked by the top ad.

hey man i give you MAJOR props for disabling SOME codes but not all of them. my rainbow link mouseover doesn't work. but on a better note I have a question: would it be okay if I put a program that I am going to write to find the distance from the sun to any given point on the earth (using the information, e.g.address and city, that people give me)and put in a module on my site?e-mail me back if you want more info on this program or visit my website and ask your question in my chatterbox(e-mail would be more private though)thank you though for disabling the auto-sub script.

and i used to have a problem with it. the ad used to be in the box.
But then i took your advice and added a close tag, heck even for all 3 different kinds of tags.
so, the ad is out of the box, but not it's in the middle of my page.
I don't know how that happened.
Anyway, it would be awesome if you could help me out and make the ad at the top of the page again.
Also, i just took out the bottom header because it isn't aligned right, it keeps tilting to the left....But if you need it to be there, i'd be happy to restore it, I just wanna know how to center it...>.<

Are stat counter counters in violation of Xanga rules are something. Whenever i use them this part of the script
is replaced with . Please give me a heads up of what's going on. Sitemeter is okay, but statcounter is better.
