  • XTOOLS FOLLOWUP

Thought I’d post a reply to some questions about Xtools.

    Funky Spacing for some Xtools

Hmm, that only kink I’ve noticed with the new x-tools is that it changes my spacing. If I don’t space twice after the period, it will remove the space entirely.so.my.sentences.look.like.this. Not a big deal, I just have to go back, and endit the entry to add another space.  Otherwise, I love all the new changes!

Hmm, we haven’t been able to reproduce this yet.  It’s a pretty rare bug report, so I’m pretty sure it’s some specific browser/OS combination!  But we have some leads on what might be causing this, so we’re hopeful yet!  Stay tuned…

    Image Upload

image upload isn’t working again… happily informs me that i’ve found a bug.

Or as rache put it more colorfully on her blog: F.U., xanga.  it’s not easy to post a photo blog when image upload tells me “you found a bug!”

Sorry about that!  We’re in the process of load-balancing our premium servers better, so that image uploads are more dependable.  The way things are configured now, image uploads can be disrupted by high loads in certain other parts of our system.  We’re changing that up, along with some other upgrades to our images management tools.  More on that over the next few weeks…

    Safari Rich Text?

No rich text for Safari? :(

As far as I can tell, Safari doesn’t support rich text editing?  As for Mozilla on the Mac – it doesn’t seem to support iframes, which we need for our richtext Xtools.  We’re looking for a workaround there.  In the meantime, we’ll have to hold off on Mac richtext editing until the browsers are more copacetic.

There’s some additional issues around Fonts in Xtools, but I haven’t quite got my arms around that one.  I’ll post again once we have a better sense of that one.

    Hope that answers your questions!

  • I’m first. I win!

  • I’m second, but I still rock! =P

  • the new xtools rock my socks

  • <3 <3 <3 xanga.

  • I have Xanga Premium and use the larger editing box, yet I am still not happy with it.  It’s just too small (compared to the older full-size version).  If I need to adjust the size of a photo (that is too big), it’s nearly impossible.  I can only view one photo at a time and, therefore, can’t compare it to the size of the others.  I can’t see the ‘total effect’ of my editing.

I’m not sure which font problems are still being worked on, but my issue with text is this …

I used to be able to choose my font and text size, and then I could prepare my entry and see the results immediately.  Now, Xtools is so fickle.  I have to repeatedly highlight my text and change the font style.  If I move to another area of the entry that I am editing, the font resets to the default.  It is taking me much longer to write/edit entries and it is quite maddening.

Despite my complaints, I am still a happy Xangan and appreciate your efforts to resolve the Xtools issues.

  • Thanks! There are a few other Xangans that have has the same spacing problems I’ve experienced – you can find them HERE, HERE, and HERE. The only common thread I’ve noticed is that we all cut and paste our entries from Word, but I don’t see how that causes the problem. Thanks again!

  • All Mac users should be applying the same pressure on Apple as they used to do on Microsoft for the failings of Safari: lack of liveconnect support, lack of rich text editing, etc.

  • Heh…I’m going to use the Bug Report in Safari to request rich text editing at least once a day now.

  • I’m experiencing font problems too…

The new default seems to be Times New Roman and I’m wondering if there is a way to change this.

Whenever I change font style and size (to Verdana size 2 for my blog), I have to do this several times before the changes take effect. Oftentimes the formatting doesn’t work on the actual site (only in the x-tools window) and I have to manually alter the HTML tags.

I can imagine that for someone with no HTML knowledge this would be very frustrating…

Hope you guys get this stuff sorted out. Thanks! You rock!

  • XANGA ROCKS MY SOCKSSSSSS =)

  • I think you should give the user the option of removing the automatic linkifying of the current page when loading up xTools from the links. I find it highly annoying and every single time xTools load up, I just delete the link. Anyway, I just fixed it so that it doesn’t do it anymore, but other users who aren’t tech savvy may wanna know how to do that as well.

  • XTools’ handling of the “br” HTML tag still seems to be erratic.  In my last entry, a “br” was added automatically after each “/p” tag.

  • uhhhhhhhhhh son

  • I guess I have a problem silmiar to Sara_Crewe’s.

I usually typed my blog in Word 2000, then cut and paste over to the Xtools. Everything worked out fine in the old Xtools, but the new word 2000 screwed the paragraphing – the paragraphs lumped themselves together automaticially after posting. I have to re-edit the entry and do the paragraphing again. Sometimes it works the second time round, sometimes I have to re-edit it again and again. I am not sure what is the problem though.

Otherwise, the new Xtools is cool.

  • Mozilla supports IFRAMES on all platforms.

There are a couple of open-source, cross-platform editors out there that you could look at to help work out the bugs.

Epoz is a cross-browser editor implemented on Zope. but all of the WYSIWYG stuff happens in JS, so it could be adapted to work on Xanga.

Mozile (Mozilla Inline Editor) is a different kind of implementation that lets you edit directly on the page, without the need of IFRAMES or even seperate windows for editing. If that were implemented, we could edit right from our pages without launching xTools!

  • WHOOHOO!
And wait, I think I forgot to mention WHOOHOO!!!!!

  • I’ve had weird spacing stuff happen with the new fonts, only with me I find that when I use some fonts, everything runs together. Or I’ll get part of the text just vanish. It doesn’t show up when highlighted; all I can do is make more space above it and then type some stuff several lines above in normal font. For reasons best known to Xtools, this fixed the problem when it happened the other day, but I discovered this just by messing about. And it won’t always be practical to do…

  • copacetic???  what does that mean?
thank you for all you do.

i hate to sound like i’m still complaining…. i do appreciate the “supersize xTool” option, yes… but i wish i could make it bigger…resize the actual window where i input text bigger.

anyhoo.  no bellyacher here.  i love the new xanga, and it loves me.

  • hehehe nicee page…check out myne…www.xanga.com/kandiEkidd

  • you know what would be a good idea?? a search for xanga members in your area or country… that even classic members can use cheersxxx

  • Many times Xanga will change the size of my pictures and I have to choose edit html and remove the size tag for it to be proper sized.  Is there a way to not have it do this?  You are all doing an excellent job to improve Xanga.

  • Oh, I remember one more thing.  When I highlight text and change the size it will work but when I highlight other text and try to change it, it does not change until I do it again.  Perhaps it just does not agree with me

  • get me my xTools!! hehehe

  • John, i think you should add a feature that allows peeps to look up other peeps to see if they have a xanga site… by e-mail address…

that way i could find my friends..

  • RYN – It works! Spacing problems are no more! Thanks. :)
