  • NOTICE ANYTHING DIFFERENT?


    Remember back in November when we said, "We're almost done testing a new version of the home.asp page - basically converting it into the Microsoft Dot Net framework"?


    *ahem*


    I suppose this stretches the definition of "almost done", but two months later we've finally finished.  Thanks go out to Monsur, Marc, and Dan... as well as to our dozen or so beta testers!  At long last, here it is:



    What's this mean for you?



    We hadn't touched a lot of that code in years, so it was great to go in and clean it up.  While we were in there, we made a few housekeeping nits:



    • Renamed "Current Site Data" to "Feedback Log"

      • Not sure what we were thinking...

    • Removed the Messages link

      • Does anyone remember what that did?

    • Made the code much more CSS-friendly

      • This means that your Xanga Site designs can be much more flexible and powerful!

    We were able to maintain backwards compatibility with all the Xanga sites we checked out (we've done more testing for this than for any other feature).  There's only two things that changed:



    • Ad Stripping Scripts no longer work
    • Left Modules Transparency has changed

      • We'll actually be adding a "look and feel" option soon that makes it much easier to make your left modules (and search bar) transparent.
      • In the meantime, it should be much easier to pull this off using CSS.  As soon as someone pulls this off, I'll link to it in a new post.

    Ok, that's all I can think of.  If your site looks different, please let us know.  And if it loads faster, let us know that too!


    UPDATE: Ok based on the feedback, it looks like more people are using transparent modules/searchbars than we thought!  I'm sorry guys - I feel really bad that we didn't get 100% backwards compatibility...


    A few things we're doing to fix things up:



    • We're making transparent modules point-and-click easy (look for this soon in your Look and Feel settings)
    • If your site looks a little funky, Monsur has written up a quick fix about the CSS tweaks you need to fix it up.

    Thanks for bearing with us!  These changes are going to make a HUGE difference for the site, and make Xanga much, much faster... so we're excited about that.  But I'm really sorry that it's funked up some of your pages.  We're working now to fix up as much of that funkiness as we can...


    UPDATE 2: Some of you have mentioned that counters are missing?  That's actually something I meant to post about: some users have started abusing the javascript flexibility to hack other people's accounts!  So we've had to restrict javascript to three trusted sites: Chatterbox, Moreover, and Sitemeter.  If you'd like us to add your sitie to our list of trusted sites, let us know the URL of your script - if it checks out, we'll add it to the list.

  • Why did you have to take away the ad stripping scripts. Those ads on top are incredibly annoying. Also, I hope the transparent modules come back soon. I was so proud of my xanga site when i learned some html code and fixed it up a week ago. To have it all taken away like this made me feel like sh!t.

  • hi..i really like the change in the faster loading and the fact taht there arent as many ads as there was before, but my page does look really wierd.

    first of all, my chatterbox's comments used to be black, but now they are the same shade as the links.  also, one of my added modules have reversed in its colors, rather than a blue border & black font, its the reverse.

    other wise, i really love the css-friendlier change (o:  thanks for your time and effort.

  • This is horrible. I had my page layout looking nice, even, and complete; but now it looks ridiculous. My fonts somehow changed, I lost my counter, I lost my dashed borders, I lost my transparency codes. Everything on my page is a complete mess. I don't understand why sizing and enabling HTML codes has to be altered, from just adding and removing some other things that was mentioned above.

  • my counter disappeared.  there's a cute anime girl on it that i consistently look forward to seeing, when i scroll to the bottom of my journal.  but now she's gone!  i feel empty inside.

  • I love the fact that you're dedicated to the constant evolution of Xanga, but I feel that we should be able to switch back to the old posting calendar style if we wish...because I hate to say it, but this new admittedly slick style is really quite useless to me.  As someone whose posts are scattered about, using this calendar becomes a frustrating exercise in random guessing. 

    Now, it would be great to use in tandem with the old calendar, or maybe if there would have been an option to select the "posted" month, because having to scroll back month by month was really slow and sluggish.  But this is taking things a bit too far in that direction, and renders the entire concept pointless for me.  If you could maybe give Premium users the chance to be able to switch between the two (please! for the Love of all that is Monkeylike in its Grandiosity!), that would be great.  As it is, I have to give this new posting calendar a really, really big thumbs down.

    The transparency options, on the other hand, are a good idea, and I support it fully.  Plus nixing the Messages option is a nice house-keeping option as well.

    Again, I really appreciate your vigilance in Xanga's upkeep.  Just...please, return the posting calendar, and I won't be forced to eat this ostrich.

  • now that i think about it -- is it such a bad thing for counters to not exist?  i admit that sometimes i hesitate to read a journal, knowing that its owner can track me down.  identification of the readers may also influence what types of entries are written, and i always hate encountering phony writings.  additionally, there's that popularity issue.  so you know what?  SCREW COUNTERS.

    i forgot to mention that i agree with most about the calender "improvement".  revert it, because it SUCKS.  i prefer ease when searching for old, treasured entries.

  • i like it transparent, and it also made some of my posts appear to be the color of my border. it made by border color be my background color and appear that i had no border

  • ok i have a minor complaint about my chatterbox, and i dont think my page is the only page that has this problem. but the chatterbox no longer has its Title Bar anymore. and also the text in the chatterbox does not correspond to the Text Color that i chose in the look and feel section. have any idea what's going on here?

  • hey i dunno what happened to my xanga. i think it's becuz of this... my xanga turned to a free trial premium mode and plus that ate my background and chatterbox up.. vomit it back out!!!!for god's sake.

  • It scared me at first, but I think I have it worked out.  It seems that the font sizes have changed, though, and my "posted at by shelly add comments" font is bigger than the font used to write the actual entry.

I like the old calendar style more (you can click and not scroll through the dates), that allows you to see the whole calendar, and what date we wrote our blogs. => easier navigation!!

    well i dont like the change at all.. I think its a bad change.. my module's background and font changed its color in their owns.. and the module's resize itself.. I have knowledge about HTML but cannot fix it..
    the major reason I dont like this change falls on the calendar.. this current version does NOT allow us to have a good navigation (you cannot see the whole calendar itself, you cannot see if we wrote our blog on specific date or not) and I dont even know if its monday/tue or not anymore..... previous calendar version lets us know if we wrote our blog or not(have a link under that date)...
    well this is just my opinion.. hope you guys reconsider and make BETTER changes.. rather than changing interfaces to the worse ones.. peace

  • i also agree wit the fact that the old calendar was way way better. but i'm having a problem with the rotating profile pictures. i'm trying to rotate 3 (profile.jpg, profile1.jpg, and profile2.jpg) but profile1.jpg is the ONLY one that comes out. is this related with the new changes? and YES i have premium. :P

  • Ok, so for the first time EVER I am NOT IMPRESSED..agh! I had all of my posts bordered so that the solid purple background would show in my posts rather than the designed background.  It made it easier for my readers to be able to read my posts.  Now it's all gone and I actually have to put a border and fill in color for the posts (either that or bold the text) so that they are still readable..agh! and let me just tell you, that purple does not match what I have and I'm not savvy enough to try and figure out how to get my own purple back into my posts.

    Everything else is fine! I'm happy!

  • I like how it's faster - that's great. But my "new and spiffy" calender doesn't work; complains about a Javascript error.

    Also, the dates above my entries (January 4, 2003), which normally separate the entries by day, is black. And my background is black. Is there any way to change the date color? Or do I just have to change my background color?

  • OKay...I will say it's faster, but I'm NOT too happy about having to go back and redo all I did.  My sidebar and searchbars had backgrounds in them, different to the background on the page... and they're gone.  A little warning about this could've been in order, john...

    other than that, I guess the rest is good... i'm just annoyed to come on and find my work gone.

  • There aren't any dates seperating one day's entry from an entry from a previous day. Now all of the entries look too similar, and its difficult to tell when I wrote what.

  • I do not like the new calendar set up...unless there is a way for non-premium users to change the colours. Since my page is relatively dark, the light colours stand out and look awful.

  • Um..okay, to the people complaining about the ads... that's just absurd.  One of the benefits of paying for premium is so that you don't have ads.  The ads are the only way that Xanga can make money (to continue running the site, so you can sit there and complain til your heart's content) off of non-premium users.

    John, I've never defended the stances from the non-premium users who complain about things like this, and I won't begin to start.  I'm GLAD you got rid of the ad-blocker script capability, because no one likes cheaters... especially when they're cheating out a great place like this.

    But I will say again, that I don't like the fact that *I* have to make additional changes in order to get my site to look the way it did before.  It's all more stuff that I have to do, and learn to do, when I was pretty content with things before, and I don't see many people disagreeing with me.  This place is not set up for people who don't know HTML or CSS... it's set up for EVERYONE to be able to write, and decorate to their capabilities.  Premium or not, it shouldn't be made MORE difficult to get your site looking the way you want it to.  Yes, I pay for premium, and I wouldn't change that... but it just seems that you've made it MORE complicated for us...

    I hate to discourage you completely, and I DO like the calendar, and the speed of the pages loading.  It just would have been nice if you'd all have asked us about the CSS stuff first.

    And don't mind me too much, I twisted my back shoveling snow... so I'm bitchy.  But in this case, I feel I have a tiny right to be.

  • I liked my site much more before the update.  Now I can't get my font to be how I liked it with HTML and everything just looks really tacky and separated.  AND I had just spent all this time fixing my xanga the other day. I actually HATE the update.

  • I prefer the old calendar too but the new one is ok.

    What was the problem with the old calendars? IIRC it caused too much of a load, reloading the entire page just for the calendar.

    If you displayed, say, 3 months calendars at a time, it would decrease the load. I don't know if it would be enough, though. Usually (Not every time, but usually) the entries on the first page would be longer (vertically) than the left modules and the three calendars.

    Or, they could be put under the Moreover box.

    *shrug*

    But then again, I've never run a large site like this one so maybe I should just shut up since I don't know what I'm talking about.

    Anyway, great job.

    Oh. Almost forgot. I would like to be able to use the Web Site Traffic Report counter on my blog again. The code points to...

  • Xanga won't let me write or edit any entries! Not to mention that there aren't any dates above my entries for each day. The new calender isn't all that its cracked up to be, since I have to guess the exact date of an entry in order to view it. I don't like this change.

  • I haven't had any complaints... my site was simple, so nothing broke, hehe. I wonder if the new premium features still work though... hmmm... anyway, hope you fixed some of the bugs with the skins and stuff.

    Yeah, the calender is good sometimes, but I think a better version of the old calender would just be better. The "first five posts" seems nice, haven't tried it out yet. My module colors have affected my "private tool box" or whatever it should be called. My counters okay, but I've seen several that, erm, aren't.

    Transparency sounds good. Just get it soon so people will stop complaining. You've got a lot of unhappy customers. And, uh, the comment didn't work the first time I tried to post it? I don't know if that's related at all.

  • i dont want to lie and say that the changes are great because to tell u the truth they're not.. i think it was better when it was transparent and the banner wasnt there.. the calendar is fine because i usually dont search for past entries, but i truly think that it would be great if you put it back to the way it was and left the calendar and speed the way it is now.. i dont think thats too much to ask.. =)

  • wow. no wonder the banners are back. and the transparent bg aint working but why disable the transparent? sometimes we use that to make the xanga look nice lol. the banners are ok cept make it smaller. just suggestions as a user at xanga.

    transparent modules and searchbar, we do that for a purpose, to make the bg not blocked by the color and searchbar cos it was to make the ad dissapear. =/ i dont know but, i thinky ou guys shouldnt have took awya the transparent bg, what harm does it do? not really against it but have some issues =x. owells. thanks for the news

  • Over on my left hand custom module, the one labeled "Random Madness" there is a box for Amazon.com that I put up because I'm part of their affiliate program...that I found out through my Xanga Premium...it is supposed to have a white background and did until all the changes y'all have made. I've done everything I know to do (blessedly little that it is) and cannot get the background for that search box to return to white instead of the current black that it is. The rest of my box is ok, even though I had to tweak the text font color because it started showing up in white instead of the color I chose in the "Look and Feel" options.

    Also, I know quite a few Xangan's who use the birthday counter from Jippy, including myself, who have had to take it down because the linking to there is no longer availabe.

    Will you please consider adding Jippy to the list of trusted sites where we can link to, along with Flooble, Moreover, and Sitemeter?

  • John, I can't "middle align" my text" and about one third of my text is off the right side of the screen. The day and time of each posting seem to be in the left margin and take up the space that pushes things to the right. A way to fix that? Does this mean I have to pay Microsoft to upgrade to a higher version of my browser?

  • never thought i'd hear myself saying that rabid squirrel makes a good point, but he does.  this new calendar is a complete shot in the dark.  also, my banner is no longer centered, even though the HTML appears unchanged, and it assumes a different (messed up) appearance on every screen i try.  overall, i'd say the changes just make the page more difficult and less attractive.

  • What about Bravenet counters (http://www.bravenet.com)?  I know a lot of people use those, like I do, and I'd like to be able to keep the counter I had. 

    I'm not sure about the calendar yet, it's going to take some getting used to.  I like the ease of navigation with the new one, but I also really liked seeing an actual *calendar* there too.

  • I can't tell you how many IQ points I lost reading the comments about how you ended the whole "no ad" script.  Do people not realize that you have to pay for premium to get rid of them and when they use that script that makes Xanga lose money?  I'm a blonde and I know that. 

    Anyway.  The changes didn't affect my site in anyway ~ it does load faster and I'm happy about that.  My background pictures tend to be big since I have a larger monitor resolution. 

    Your hard work is appreciated.  Since my skin and scripts still work I'm all happy!

  • Sorry you are having so many negative comments on this one, John. I wanted to ask about my calendar. I use a skin and the old calendar has not changed and still takes a long time to load. I would love to have the new calendar style but without giving up my skin. Is there a way? The old code evidently is not the ticket.

  • you know. i've been using xanga since before there was premium and the whole xangalympics and TAKING AWAY the total eprops display and TAKING AWAY the site data box. i've loved xanga so much for letting me play around with the way i want my site to look. the fact that you've changed everything around has COMPLETELY ANNHILATED this thought. i mean, fine, the site data boxes were taking up too much server power, and the total eprops display thing too, so you give us xanga premium to figure out a way to make some money to GET more server power and whatnot. ok, i'm fine with that. but then what's the point of having the xangalympics? so MORE people could sign up for xanga and then we could have even MORE server power taken away? so that we loyal xanga users can have so many of the lil conveniences taken away from us?

    the whole point of having the look & feel page was for us to mess around with our site and make it how we want it to look. thank you oh so very much for killing that.

  • I'd also like to see a combination of the new calendar and the old calendar - just have a drop-down box for the month, so you don't have to scroll back through the months, but show the calendar thingie so you don't have to guess what dates you posted. Know what I mean?

    I like it. Every thing is running just fine on my site. I'm sure all of the people above with "mAd HtMl SkIlLzzzzz" will have no problem fixing their pages, especially if they read what you and Monsur wrote. Oh wait, you wrote in English using proper grammar and punctuation. That might take a while for them to translate.

    I don't mean to be sounding crabby... ah, fuck it. I do. While there are legitimate complaints mentioned above, I haven't heard this much whining and crying since I worked in a nursery a decade ago. For fuck's sake, if you don't like the damn banner ad, pay the 15 cents a day (at the most!) and get it removed the real way.

    New calendar is cool. I like it better than the old one. Each calendar has it's own "crapshoot" feel to it. At least with the new one, more than one date is displayed when you are searching.

  • I had my site perfectly screwed up and you guys just went ahead and made it all work spiffy good again.  Damn it--I want it screwed up like it was before!!!  I worked so hard to screw it up and what gives you the right to make it work so much better??  Also, could you please place the banner ad back on my page, I know I have Premium, but why should I be penalized and denied important banner ad information just for going Premium?!  Also, this shit is just too damn fast now--I'm bound to get more visitors than I want again.  Truth is, I made my site crawl slow just to discourage hordes of unwanted visitors and now I'll have to figure out more novel ways to slow it down again to compensate for your accelerative streamlining.  I was totally counting on you guys to be so much less masterful and look what it got me...What a life!

    I am A-Okay with everything except the new calendar. I never realized what a friend that calendar was. I liked being able to see the month at a glance... see where I posted, how long it had been since my last post, look for a posting pattern (which days I tended to blog more often) .. etc. It kinda motivated me to keep up my writing., which I am actually starting to enjoy now.
     
    This place is growin outta it's britches. I understand the need to watch server drag. And you mentioned, the old calendar was a causing some sluggishness. Perhaps if the new, speedier calendar was used by Classic members.. and as Premium members, we might be able to choose which calendar setting works for us? I know that feature alone would motivate me to renew my Premium next month.
     
    I do love the other new features.. anything to make the fancy stuff easier and more user friendly is a positive step. But as it is, I can't help but feel that the new calendar was a down grade.
     
    Just my thoughts, feelings and observations.. and look! I didn't curse once!  Wheeeeeeeee! 
     
    Now.. where do I start begging to get the calendar back?

  • I really appreciate everything that you guys are doing for Xanga. I was upset when I first looked at my site too because I didn't want Xanga to change either... I liked it the way it was, but I know that if not for you guys, there would be no Xanga... And let me tell you, I love Xanga! I know you guys work really hard for us so that Xanga can be available to poor people like me who can't buy premium... and we don't make it any easier, always complaining that this or that doesn't look how we want it to look and we're always jacking around on Xanga, which is hell on your servers... but what you guys do means a lot to people like me. You are all just really wonderful for everything that you do. I wish I could give you more than two eProps, but I can't.

  • Okay, I'm a bit confused...that's all.  A lot of my Xanga had transparency configured such as my modules and my search bar, and now it has come back as color and it ruins the effect of my Xanga.  Now, you said this will be able to be made easier by just clicking something in 'Look and Feel'?  Will that be soon or not?  This is basically my confusion because I don't like that the modules are no longer transparent in my Xanga.  

    About the posting calender; it's interesting.  I liked the old calender a lot better but this one is neat and tidy and is kind of cool in a way.

    And, thanks for trying to make Xangas a lot better.  I know that many of us are unhappy about the new changes but I'm sure that when you guys get around to it, there'll be a way for more fixes and tweaks here and there. (transparency! lol...) Thanks again for both listening and trying to tend to everyone's needs at once.

    I have a small problem on my Mac.... Each time i go to my (or any other) site the background comes up as a different colour. Black, green, red, blue.... bright in your face colours that the text can't be read through.

    I've checked the code on my site and I've got white coded in. And when I go to my site on a PC it comes up white, so I am guessing it is a mac problem.... but it was an issue I didn't have before.

    Any suggestions?

  • Ok, I have to point out something that really bugs me.... I have the "custom header" thing on my page, and now the left part is automatically bolded and there's no way to change it. I don't like that - I specifically want the two halves of the custom header to have equal visual impact. Yeah, I could just do the code myself for the same thing, but that's.. so much work! It would be cool to have the option to bold in the look and feel thing, not have it be automatic.

    To all the people bitching and threatening to leave: fine, leave, less site traffic and makes the server even faster for the rest of us.

  • I have no problems w/ the upgrades. One thing that I would like though: for the calendar to come back. I like what you have now too, but like rabidsquirrel said, some entries are scattered and randomly about and this new thing makes it harder when looking back on old entries. Thanks for the upgrades.

  • Well, when u changed xanga, it screwed up my blog a lot (more than a lot of other ppl's), so I got a web template. (Even tho I hate using those) Then I figure out that there is a way to get back transparency, but that's too late, cuz I already LOST ALL MY HTML!!!! =( *sniff* Oh well, guess I'll just have to start the whole darn thing over.   • i love the new look for my site!  it's so much faster too!  i went through every persons xanga (on my "sites i read" list) in under 2 minutes!  i was just checking to see if they updated. 

    only one... no two suggestions:

    1.) xanga premium should be free

    2.) get a use for eProps!

  • My weblog boxes used to automatically have a black background or fill.  Now they are the same as My site background.  I can easily fill each time....but there should be a way to maintain the fill colour.  I also lost a weather button on My site.  I reinstalled it, but it is not visible on My site.  And some of the fonts on the page simply change size when I make changes, or simply post anything.

Also, if you really need to put the banner on the page, can you at least put it on the bottom of the page? they'll see it either way. the banner on the top of the page is just really annoying. Please change it back to the old xanga. It was soo much better.

And I liked it so I sent a check to the address they gave me. 6 months on Premium for $15. I live in Miami, Florida and that has 2 go all the way to NewYork. After my Premium Trial expires will I THEN be notified if my check arrived?

  • i don't really notice a difference in speed.. but i do notice a difference in appearance. i used to be able to see the text in my banner, but since the changes were made, the text blended in with the color of the banner. is there any way to fix that?

  • Sorry, but this is not an improvement. I have a mac - not an outdated one either. Netscape worked much better for me for writing blogs and uploading pictures. Now I cannot use Netscape at all. I have always had to use Explorer for site visits. Now I cannot scroll down on some sites and some sites are painfully slow. There are mac users, you know. Not everyone has or wants a PC.

  • this comment will surely be lost among the masses, but I figured I'd attempt to get attention anyways. At the risk of repeating what 200 people already said...I agree with most. The calendar was so much more user friendly before. I didn't use many of the other features, so that's all i can actually complain about. Other than that, it's awesome, runs perfect and I haven't lost any more posts. Good job!

    I have a suggestion for a feature that nobody has come up with thus far though. It's possible to block a user from commenting on your site, but it should ALSO be possible to block a user from SUBSCRIBING to your site. (READ: i hate that damn Lube bastard). I don't appreciate being on his list...he offends me and many other people. I think if you object to being added to a person's site, you should be able to remove them. A feature like this would be much appreciated :)

    sorry, but i really really REALLY don't like this "new format" i don't notice a difference in speed, all i see is ugliness. and if fast=ugly, then i'd rather have slow but pretty. the old one was MUCH better. feeling madd jipped... -_-

  • damn this. my xanga is not speeding up .. its slowing down so much and its not my computer thats lagging. and the html codes i've been using for a while arent working now. could you just change back whatever you did to "fix" xangas?

  • Great job on the faster web page loading!  I didn't have anything transparent on my site, so I'm not sure about those problems, but the loading is much better :P

  • grrrrrrrr...you should just leave the xanga shit ALONE. it doesnt go any faster and yu FREAKED up the css codes. now everyones xanga looks funky. no one understands that new *css* fix.

  • How do I change the calendar back to the old way? I don't like this calendar, it's pretty annoying, if there is no posting on that date then it doesn't take you anywhere, and u can't see what days you have postings. i think a better calendar would have the months and years as a drag down but the days as links within the calendar... is there anyway i can change it back? thanks

  • I have already sent one email about this.  My pictures on the left hand side are missing, my special module is gone, and all my pictures in my photo section no longer are available to me.  why?

  • Hmmm, only thing changed on my site is that I now have black text where I had white before---in only one place.  No problem.  I can fix that.  But the big plus is that my site loads so much faster---yeah.

    My music is not working but that my be my danged computer.

    And to those who are complaining it seems most of them are non-paying users.  They got rid of the ads?  Where do they think the money comes fomr so they can havea  free site ---sheesh bet they steal cable too.

  • the new calendar looks cool and eveything but, i liked the old calendar better for the fact that not all people post every day, most people people posts are scattered and having the new type of calendar just doesn't make sense for some people, the old one allowed the readers and even the writers the go to a specific day and (re-)read posts... also, i definitely think that xanga needs some more stylish font options... but thanx for trying to make Xanga better

  • this is absolutely HORRIBLE.  Borders on my left modules would NOT go transparent.  I CAN'T change my left module font colors, can't change my link fonts, and it does NOT work faster!! ARG!  somebody HELP!

  • i think the old calendar was better. for the new option, they should do the MONTH only. and i emailed the xanga peoples and they said that they're working on the TIME STAMPS stuff. since it is eastern time, so simmer down yalls ;]
