  • GUESTBOOK 3.0 IS LIVE!

Monsur rewrote the guestbook so that it’s FAST… even for our highest-traffic members:

We got a lot of feedback on the idea for anonymous guestbook signing, which is a good reminder to us that an important part of the Xanga experience is feeling “safe”.  Towards that end, we’re prioritizing a feature that Monsur’s been championing for quite some time: Protected Posting.

Sometimes there’s content that you don’t want just anyone to be able to find and read.  With Protected Posting, you could select which of your readers you’d like to be able to read a particular post.  You could even create and manage groups of these readers, like Friends, Family, Classmates, etc.

This way, if you’d like to post pics of your kids but are worried about their safety… you can make sure that only Family members see the pics.  Or if someone is pestering you on your site, you can create a group of readers that doesn’t include them – that way, you’re safe and protected from anyone you don’t explicitly trust to read your site.

The specs get a little tricky, because we need to integrate Protected Posting into the Groups features we’re programming now.  But it’s going pretty well, and we’ll have some mockups to test with users soon.  Then once Groups comes out, this should be our very next feature.

Let me know what you think of the new Guestbooks… as well as your thoughts on Protected Posting.  Thanks!

  • I love ‘em, they work!!!

  • YAY!!! Finally my guestbook works! Looks good! And I am absolutely positively for the Protected Postings…that is wonderful!!! Gives us new things to be thankful for! Happy Thanksgiving to you all.

  • The new guestbook thingies look wonderful ( I noted the addition of profile pic etc.)… and I love that idea of selective postings… now if you could just make it an option to turn off eprops altogether for those that just want comments (some people commenting on my site said they wish there was such an option feature)… That epropping thing is getting to be so divisive and a hot-button topic for some– those sites that get ‘em and those that don’t… maybe you should consider it?

  • ‘Protected Posting’ does seem to fit into the new Homeland Security scheme quite metaphorically, at least.

Wow–the guestbook works–now I get to read all the important, once-in-a-lifetime-type messages that some readers were able to sneak in even though I was unable to read for the last 6 monts.

  • wow, you guys are just gonna make it impossible for me not to give up my lunch money to go premium, aren’t you!?

  • Wow, I’m in a swirl of confusion!  Don’t let me have too many decisions, I’ll never be able to post!  Who gets to read, who doesn’t…  But, it’s a great idea.

  • Checked a couple of guestbooks and didn’t see much different. But, if it is working for VeryModern and NotFor, it’s gotta be good. I am all for the protected posting, but logistically speaking, it sounds like it is going to be a nightmare to put together. Best of luck getting it up and running!

  • Another vote for protected posting.  Could be useful.  Could also knock out the competition….always good in this dog-eat-blog world !

  • i think the protected posting is a great idea!

  • I’d love that protected posting thing! I’ve wanted to do that, y’know. Create things to be read by people who don’t know me IRL, or ones that only those IRL can only see. If you make that a Premium thing, I might have to get Premium.. but, please, if you don’t have to, keep it a Classic feature!

  • the guestbook looks great! i like the addition of the profile picture and message….very nice!! and it works too…what more could one want????

    thanks!

  • Man, the new guestbook is SMOKIN! I noticed some of the CSS is inconsistent with the CLAF settings, but other than that it looks great…

Protected posting sounds interesting… personally, I think that if you need to keep something private, then maybe the web isn’t the place to put it, but different strokes yada yada.. at any rate, nice work!

  • Protected Posting – I’ve been wishing for that for a while…

  • Protective posting??? YAY!!! YES!!! YES!!!

  • sounds like a good idea!!

  • hey well jus droppping by well cya in skool

  • thanks!!! i just emailed about this exact thing!!  it’s great that you guys are already on top of that!!!

  • Protected posting would actually nudge me toward premium if that is the only way it will be offered.  I have a few prying eyes that I’d really like to keep ‘some’ things from.

  • I just have to post in reponce to this all…

I am all for the Protected Posting Policy and I hope that this is an upcoming feature that will be in place soon.

I, for one have someone from my past (real life) that is sub’ing anonymously.  The part that I dislike about this the most is if someone sub’s that way, I can’t block them.  Okay, so even if I could block them they could sign up as a completely different Xanga user just to log in and see what I blog.  I think the this new feature would be JUST what I am looking for.

Please know that this added feature would benefit many of us.  Those in the high schools sound like they need the added protection for sure.  Though, its not just high school students.  Some of us almost 30 somethings can benefit too!!

Thank you for all your hard work.  I look forward to seeing this new feature in use soon!

    Chelle

  • i’m all for it. is there a chance for non premium members to use skins lol. if you really want to private posting – get seanmeister’s CLI skin.

  • Awesome… thanks for the heads up this morning!

  • Yay! Finally I can keep my in-laws from reading my stuff with protected posting.

  • I think protected posting is a wonderful idea!

  • protected posting wud be great since when i post picz on mai page thiz weirdo alwayz stealz them and postz them on their page

  • Definitely a good idea.

It would be nice to be able to block whole domains as well.  Cos on my island we all have to connect through one isp and then I could stop all the RL ppl reading my stuff.
