  • Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh….  Featured Content is actually useful again!

Monsur made Featured Content only show posts made by Premium Members, at least for the default view.  I was a bit skeptical on how effective this would be, but wow: check it out!  No more social propping – just stories, musings, pictures, fiction…

We’ll see if it holds up over time.  But for now, Featured Content is once again a great place to find new sites and great posts… can you believe it?!

  • excellent! now if only we could get their profile images to show up there… that’d be wonderful!

  • awesome! good job, xanga dudes!

  • Aww. I think I truly love you guys. Heh.

  • Take back the night!

  • Quite a few there I finally recognize again…..

  • Not to be argumentative here, but isn’t it possible that classic users might have some interesting content also?  I don’t think paying money for your site makes you a better writer by default.  In fact, I can think of several people who cancel out that theory.

  • Yay!!!!!!!!  Totally solved the social propping problem!!!  Also those who want to be on the featured content list might upgrade if it is so very important to them.

  • Whooooo Hoooooo!  Thank you, thank you!

  • Hey, that seems like a good solution!  Good job!

  • THAT’s what happened!  I noticed all those kis were gone, I thought maybe they all went back to school.

Interesting trick.  I used to use featured content to find good sites, and I’m a bit concerned they may be non-premium sites I want to read, but it wasn’t usefule to me the other way anyway.  And it might get some premium sales for you, as much as people like to get on there.  I hope it doesn’t upset the masses too much (classic users).  Eprops are the foundation of xanga’s appeal in many ways.  I’m wondering if you can choose the view that includes classic?  I’ll have to go check that out.

  • tandis (and dave), you can see all of the featured content entries here…

yeah, i was very reluctant to make such an clearly plutocratic move, but featured content had really become quite unusable.  this is a nice short term solution…

  • Hurray! and woo-hoo! on the current changes!!! I’m beginning to think that if ever I’m asked to fill out my address on anything– I can in all honesty list Xanga. Because, in my mind, this is where I’ve been constantly for the last month.

I’ve tried the rest, and Xanga’s the best! You can quote me.

  • 12:44:44  (Time you posted this )

  • HURRAY!!!!  YEAH!!!! GO JOHN!!!!  (Can you tell I am happy at this latest development??!! )

  • hey john, it looks like the featured links from the front page are still “all sites”. Yes/no?

  • ah good point elsa, i’ll let monsur know.

  • thank you, thank you, thank you! about time the worthless “2 epillz 4 u” sites are out of that slot!

  • this is GREAT – thanks!

  • Just realized I commented under my brother’s site before.  But that was supposed to be me, I was just logged in as him to update his itinerary.

  • okay I know I speak for the minority here.. because I’m not a premium user and I’m not wildly popular but in a sense, it seems thats what Xanga has become.. a popularity contest. who has the right to judge what counts as valuable content? Isn’t that more relative to each person? Just because certain users have many readers doesn’t mean their sites are any more valuable than users who have less than 10 readers yet write quality posts..

I don’t really care who’s on the “featured sites” list.. its not an important issue to me and I realize that the creators of this site have taken into account the differing points of view that will arise eventually.

I just hope that people remember that this site is about expression, the freedom to express our differing views.. to celebrate them and contribute as a community. Its easy to say that sites with writing SuCh aS DiS are not worth recognition but at the same time, hasn’t everyone in their lives been searching for their voice? Its not as if the people on the featured sites list have always written the way they do.. its a continuing and growing process that we should embrace. I got long winded here.. sorry

  • Im a bit unhappy….email coming your way John…see if you can help me out here….

  • hmm… I swear I commented on this?

I am a little torn. The one time I have checked on Featured since this post was up, the list looked a lot “nicer” (to me, anyway). On the other hand, there are classic users who post good content.

There also seems to be a growing amount of discontent in the classic field regarding all of the features premium users have. I see their point… There should definitely be a distinction between what is premium and what is not. It’s a tricky balance finding the amount of features to give classic users to keep them here and have them upgrade….

Keep walking that tightrope… And listen to both sides of the fence to make sure you don’t run off new users.

  • Thanks.  I appreciate that.

  • That’s a pretty good solution except that some of my favorite writers have not yet bought Premium. But still. It’s an interesting way to weed people out.

Also, I saw the film “Satin Rouge” over the weekend. THANK YOU for recommending it. I wrote about it today.

  • sorry, but i think that’s kinda crap. just because i don’t want to shell out money right now for the service for reasons beyond my control i don’t get recognized by xanga? i am relegated to the back bench with the rest of the slang kiddies? thanks. i’m also one of the older users here, and will continue to be a respectful and supportive member of the community. but hereby unrecognized. disappointed, sorry.

  • yeah, I think that’s crap too. I know you guys need money and all, but it’s like you’re saying that only people who pay money deserve any recognition and only people who pay money produce any worthwhile content. You already have the premium member featuring on the front page (which doesn’t bother me).

Yes, I realize it takes money to run this site, but when you treat people who don’t pay like they don’t deserve to be here, it doesn’t exactly make me want to run out and buy premium.

And really, the only way to solve the “problem” with the FC list is to get rid of it altogether. I haven’t used it in a very long time, but I still manage to find good sites – imagine that.

  • Not being a premium user, I will never be on the featured content list, not that I would anyway…. Even so, the featured content does look much better and is useful once again. I think it was a good move.
