  • Dr Xanga

I got sick this weekend.  Here are my symptoms:

    • Sore throat (bad)
    • Fever
    • Headache
    • Congestion (not that bad though)

I took some Tylenol and the fever broke a few hours later.  The other symptoms have continued, but the sore throat is the worst.  Overall, I feel better but still not completely well.

What do I have, and how should I treat it?

  • you have xangaitis. (i bet it’s a cold).

the wiki looks so awesome i might start jumping up and down right now

  • a cold. lots of sleep and medicine!   people think it’s a flu when theres a fever involved, but a real flu puts you out of commission for a week.  (i just learned that!)

  • drink a lot of water and take ecanasia. and lozenges for your throat… if you do these 2 things. you should feel better within a few days. i went to school for this =P

  • You are dying and there is no cure.  Just joking.

I hope you feel better.  My wife has all the same issues.

  • sing your heart out.

(i wanted to give you soup to wish you better but i do not have enough credits….)

  • sounds like you have throad aids.

  • Well, here’s some virtual soup.  Rest if you can!

  • hard to do, but rest is the best thing

  • wow those are some pretty dismal diagnoses… I was just going to say to have lemon tea with honey and take your vitamins.. if it’s not better in a few days maybe go to your doctor.. generally I’m not a fan of taking lots of antibiotics though :/

  • It will be ideal to rest for a bit and to take it easy.

  • You have a cold, get off the computer, eat chicken soup and go to bed for some rest!

  • hot tea and hot soup

  • It could be a cold, the flu, strep throat or tonsillitis. For fever and throat pain, take Tylenol. For congestion, take Mucinex DM. When the sore throat is really bad and accompanied by fever, you should go to the doctor to make sure it’s not one of the contagious infections mentioned above. I also prescribe bed rest and lots of sympathy and pampering by your family and friends. If you’ve got to be sick, you should at least be able to milk it a little.

  • It’s all been said… but when I get a cold, I swear by Tylenol Cold.  It works well.  Get some rest and drink lotsa fluids!  I particularly like hot honey-lemon tea.  ^_^  Cheers!

  • mad props to the guy who said you have throat aids… BWAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!

  • Throat AIDS… *sigh

Treatment – Among other stuff, lots of liquids.

  • i feel like House, M.D.

  • if you are coughing a lot, and your throat hurt a LOT – not just swollen, but actually very painful, then you should get checked for strep.  otherwise, i’m sure its just a normal cold.  drink lots of fluids.  here’s a quick tip – cut up a whole lemon into think slices, put it in a pot and boil it, then mix it in a mug with lots and lots of honey.  its totally natural, and it tastes good, and it will sooth your throat.

    hope you feel better soon!

  • It could be strep throat.  Doctors now have a swab test they can do to check if that’s the case or not, I’m pretty sure.

If you don’t wanna go to the doctor though, just keep doing as others have said– rest, drink plenty of fluids, and see how it goes.

  • Chicken soup and chocolate.  That is my remedy and I’m sticking to it!

Hope you are feeling better soon!

  • when i read this on my subscriptions page i totally was gonna write; “you have xangaitis, daily entries for about a week should just about cure the problem.” you know, thinking i’m all clever and whatnot, but then i see your first comment already says that.

    so much for being original…

that being said, hope you feel better soon.  (lots of liquids and rest should do the trick.)

  • sounds like the flu. i think someone already recommended this – but i’ll say it again: echinacea is great for this kind of thing. Its an immune system booster…it’s actually great as a preventative measure too (like, if you take it when you feel a cold coming on you will find that the cold won’t ever really develop!) but it’s good to take while sick…speeds up the recovery process. you can find it in pill form or as a tea - they sell the pill form everywhere (Duane Reade, Rite Aid, whatever) and the tea form you can probably find in GNC or another health food store. As far as herbs go – goldenseal is also great (another one that’s good for the immune system, and you can find echinacea and goldenseal sold together in pill and tea form) and chamomile is good (it’s stress reducing and soothing). If and when you drink your tea, drink it with honey (pure honey – no imitation stuff) and lemon.  To cut your fever another good thing to do is take tylenol or advil every four hours… it works! And you know – drink PLENTY of water (At least 8 cups) and OJ. and rest rest rest.

  • I second the suggestion of taking Mucinex.  Mucinex has a mucus thinner which will ease your congestion and lessen the chances of a secondary infection.  Gargling with warm salt water may sound nasty but it is a great way to quickly get rid of a sore throat.  it also reduces the chances of your sore throat progressing into an infected throat or tonsilitus.

I hope you feel better soon.  :)

  • Drink plenty of hot tea with fresh lemon and honey,it will help your throat and gargle with strong salt water. Home remedies that work!

  • oh, i totally missed the part where you said you took tylenol already… and i just remembered this home remedy my mother and i use for sore throats – mix honey, lemon juice, vinegar and black pepper (no particular amounts - i’d say two parts honey one part lemon juice one part vinegar and then just add black pepper) and then gargle a bit with about two tablespoons and swallow. it stings a bit – but it helps with the throat for some reason! I think it’s the honey, which has healing properties. Manuka honey is the best  – a bit expensive, but is known for it’s healing power: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3787867.stm

  • a cold buster a jamba juice always makes me feel mentally better :)

  • NyQuill always works for me. :)

  • That’s been going around here too, daughter has had a sore throat now for weeks-doc said it’s just a viral infection.  Feel better!

  • My mom told me that a cold always starts out with a sore throat.

  • Lots of sleep, lots of liquid.
Also try: honey + lemon + ginger + water of course, to boil. That should help.

  • Sounds like a touch of the flu. An article on treating flu in children recomends fluids, ibuprophen (not asprin), and bedrest.

  • I had exactly the same thing!

  • That sucks, sorry to hear.  When I’m that bad I usually just use Day Quil.

  • lots of fluid and good rest.  by fluid, i’m talking scotch

  • It could be an ear infection or strep.  Then again it could just be a really bad cold.  Tylenol is good.  Ear infection can cause fever and sore throat.

  • get a bowl of hot ginger water!! it helps… and of course take enough rest! =) take care

  • You have something I hope I don’t get.

  • Catarrhal Cynanche

    I suggest an immediate quarantine.

  • Mumps?  I only say that because there have been outbreaks of it lately – enough that Alberta Healthcare gave all us uni students at the U of Alberta free vaccinations.

  • My little guy had something similar.  It lasted only a day or two.  However, it was a tricky bugger and came back for a total of three visits in two weeks.   My advice- do what you need to feel better, but take extra precautions with disinfecting the house (throw out the toothbrush!), office etc…

    Get well soon!

  • You have an upper respiratory virus and need to consume a great deal of Jello.

  • If you have a severe inflammation of the throat, you might have mononucleosis.  Check it up on a medical journal.  I had it recently.. it lasts 4-6 weeks, but the beginning is very subtle.  It starts with a general fatigue-ness and constant sleepiness, and soon leads to headaches and fevers.  After that comes the inflammation of the throat.  There are drugs (a type of steriod) that can be prescribed by your doctor and it quickly (within 1-3 days) fixes the throat problem.

  • sore throat is always the worst for me. I usually take riccola and maybe some kind of OTC throat-remedy syrup. only take medicine if i absolutely need it but usually chug fluids and soups and take all-natural supplements that fight colds (wellness formula).

but riccola is your friend.i recommend honey lemon with echinacea.

  • skip the tea. boil water, put some honey in it & squeeze some lemon juice for more flavor & vitamin c.

throat drops will help your throat.
try not 2 talk as much because during this time, your throat is very sensitive. try to whisper if u can.

water, rest, water, rest, bathroom break, water, rest, water, rest… etc.

was sick just a few weeks ago.

  • I HAD THIS JUST LAST WEEK…IN ABOUT 2 DAYS YOUR THROAT WILL FEEL BETTER THEN THE NEXT DAY YOU WILL FEEL BETTER…THEN THE NEXT DAY IT ALL MOVES TO YOUR NOSE…WHERE I AM AT…GOOD LUCK LOTS OF SLEEP…I’M STILL FIGHTING MY COLD AND ON 2 WEEKS!

  • You have the common viral cold and there is no remedy, so it will have to run its course.  Drink lots of water and hot tea w/ honey and lemon.  Sunshine is good; sleep extra and rest when you can.  Also, in the early stages of a cold (or feel it coming) those zinc discs or Zicam really seem to shorten the virus… works for me, anyway.  Take care that the cold does not go into an ear infection or other secondary illness.  Feel better quickly!

  • I tend to live on Dayquil when that happens. Or you could move to Florida, like I finally did. No winter here.

  • better hope u don’t have strept!! it’s horrible.. until u take antibiotics.. go see a doc!

  • One thing to say… yearly flu shot.

  • (glad someone mentioned mono…)

  • If it’s not an eye infection, I have no idea.  You might have the flu, though.  Get well soon!

  • COLD-FX. have you ever tried it? i live by it and it’s never failed me since… especially when i have the symptoms you’re showing now. it’s pretty much ginseng in a pill, but that’s why it’s brilliant! (and a tad on the pricier side compared to other drugstore meds).

  • No idea what it is.  But keep hydrated.  Can hardly go wrong doing that.

  • Sounds like the flu. Just sleep it off, you’ll be alright.

  • i would go see a doctor just to be sure.

  • chicken soup + homeopathic remedies + zinc lozenges + vitamin c + gargle with salt water.
    ftw.

  • “homeopathic remedies” could probably include Zicam, as well.

i had similar symtoms not long ago.

  • only one more thing… i used lukewarm salt water. it was more soothing than i thought it would be.

  • yup take echinacea and whatever you do, do not take lozanges. yeah it feels great as it melts and mellows in your mouth but they dry out your mouth and throat and make the sore throat worse. if you still have congestion my professor (i’m a nursing student) told me a new ‘trick’ – grab the humidifier and stick your face in it and lightly tap with your fingers the sinus areas on your face – the areas that feel congested basically near the nose and around the eyes, she said if you get it right, you’ll feel drainage so be prepared with a bucket maybe? haha idk haven’t tried it out myself as of yet. hope it helps and get well soon!

  • definitely get checked for strepp throat!

  • if your throat hurts really bad, try some lozenges or chloraseptic spray to numb it if its really painful.  if your symptoms persist for a week or so (especially the fever) , see a real doc!

  • I’ve got a hacking cough that keeps me up all night. It looks like we’re both sick.

  • a small case of herpes? always delicious.

  • Hope you are feeling better

  • ryc: definitely the mexican cryer w/the boob implants… when she kissed Sylar i was like “that’s it, she’s gotta go”

  • Seems like most people here know what they are talking about, so I suggest taking their advice if you are still sick and in need of it.

Hope you feel better soon. :]

  • ryc: Well, that makes me happy, lol.  ^_^  I hope you’re feeling better, incidentally.

  • it sounds like you are worn out. Make sure to eat, rest, and drink lots.

  • a tendency towards moaning.

  • i have the same thing!! lol i hope you get to feeling better soon!!

  • ry(pulse)c: no, i’m a flat-fingered typer – i never had the “pretend that you’ve got racquetballs under your hands for proper typing/piano playing/trumpet playing” thing down and i think being close to the keyboard helps keep up my supa-speed

  • ryc: I’m not sure about the OS itself, but Gates has been ripping off the Mac GUI forever, hehe

  • Thanks John!  I’ll be sure to take pictures and maybe some video to show everyone!

ps:  I didn’t even know about the new private page until I came over here to post a comment.  I like it!!

  • we miss you, john. well, i dunno bout “we,” but i miss ya! update!

  • Try to get some sleep have some hot soup..

  • ryc: Yep.  Wrote it, drew it, etc.  Happens once in a while that something somewhat witty comes outta me, heh.  Thanks.  ^_^

  • Are you ok??? It’s been awhile since you posted……that’s not like you. Take care.

  • You need rest! Sounds like the common cold to me but if it lingers much longer you might want to see a doctor.

  • ummmm actually my icons are on my bottom post.!! – beachyicons

  • here’s some more soup! :)

  • zycam usually works for me.

    ryc: yes, yes, and yes.

  • I have a question. Why did you all change the “Rich Text – Old Text” editor?? It has caused a lot of problems for layout makers, even though I don’t know if you all support layout making. Personally, I think you should fix the editor back to the way it was before. Please & thanks.

  • Feeling better yet? You had the seasonal crud. Yes, that’s the official name.

  • Sounds like a bad cold. Get well soon^_^

  • probably viral, and so gargling with salt water, taking a decongestant (sore throat was probably because of post nasal drip), and lots of fluids will help…if you had a fever…now that’s puzzling…so it could have been strep…did you look at your throat? Was it red? swollen? have white spots? if so…go to a doctor!
