  • Google Talk

I’m kinda stunned at the number of people who spend all day chatting on Google Talk!

Because it’s built into Gmail, a lot of corporations can’t block it without causing an uproar.  So it’s one of the first major chat programs that people are free to spend all day on.

I think one of the most important strategies for websites these days is how to sneak past the corporate firewall.  It’s kinda amazing that any work gets done at “work”!

How many hours a day would you say you spend chatting online?

  • yes! first comment!!

    I’d say….. 0 minutes 0 hours.

I used to chat a lot, but that was when I was younger. We can always just text or call, right?

  • all day long. hahahaha….thank goodness for gchat!

  • at work, I chat with my friend all day. we leave to do work but it’s a pretty constant part of the day.

  • I spend maybe between 30 minutes to an hour chatting online everyday.  It’s addicting.

  • far less than an hour… In High School I would chat all night if I wasn’t out with my friends.

  • i think i spend about 2 hours a day chatting…that’s if the wireless i’m “borrowing” works hehe

  • hmmm… i mostly only chat with mr. bee.

  • Does going back and forth on Xanga or Facebook count as chatting?  As for actual instant messaging programs, probably 30 minutes a day at the most.  Kinda useless now with text messaging.

  • They blocked the gtalk on my computer….I use my blackberry instead..if it’s a slow work day, prob about an hour of my work day goes to chatting and personal emails. if i’m busy, then i stay away from it all.

fyi – everytime i go to see the latest photos, when reading my subscriptions (the photo tab), i can only go back so far – like today, i keep clicking on next and it only goes back 4 pages worth and it’s still on Monday, October 29! Have I missed something cause I remember being able to view back a few more days..

  • I chat with the boy and the pops in the mornings just to say what’s up – all the bells and whistles that AIM has now are way more than I need and I far prefer GChat.

  • regarding caromsage’s comment, the same thing happens to me! hahaha.

i loveee gmail and i can’t live without it. winsor’s company blocks gmail, xanga, facebook and overheard in ny. i feel bad for him, but at least he has engadget?

i dont get anything blocked at work. dont know if it’s good or bad.

  • Although it’s not a job, I feel like being at the library “studying” with all my friends also there is pretty similar, at least in this way, to an office situation.  We all mean to do work, but with gchat just right there, and all your friends in the area, we rarely get any work done.

  • There aren’t all that many people who would chat with me, the most I have ever spent was probably about four hours.  Averaged out over a week the most I have spent was probably 1 hour a day tops.  Now total time I spend online is much much higher than that just no one talks to me.

  • is that a problem at Xanga headquarters? ;p

  • hardly any.  don’t you use meebo?

  • Oh my goodness!! SO true!! i’d say of my 8 hour work day, i prolly spend a solid two to three hours of unaccountable time… either reading on Xanga, playing on Myspace, reading whatever on the web… or… chatting. It’s a wonder I still HAVE a job!

  • I used to spend a lot of time online, bt now I am lucky if I spend 1 hour a day at my computer! there is a whole world out there I and I want to go enjoy it!

  • All day at work, but I use IM to speak to my network admin and finance dept all the time.

  • Minutes, not hours are spent — and only if IM is more convenient than email.
Google Talk is what I use.

  • I Google Talk.   And I am the most productive one in my department.   I get more work done when I have GT going than not because it helps me vent.

  • I chat all the time. But I do it when I’m waiting for builds and whatnot or taking a break. It keeps me relaxed and I can do better work. But that’s just me.

Oh, and I don’t have just google talk. Got aim, yahoo messenger, msn messenger, etc. all installed. Why settle for just google talk? =D.

  • For me, IM *is* work… I couldn’t do my job without it.

My IM is on 24/7… got all of the major services set up in Pidgin, plus Skype on the side.

  • not even 1 hour…. ugh.

  • before my company totally blocked AIM, yahoo messenger and ICQ, i was logged in all day long. but i rarely IMed during work til i joined xanga, and that whole xanga whore bunch. hahahaha… then the IMing was non-stop. it finally came to a head one day when my boss snuck around behind me and caught me with about 8 chat windows open. =X

needless to say, i un-installed all my IM programs that day for fear i’d get canned. a few months later, the block was company-wide. i still log into meebo whenever i need it, but google chat with friggin awesome. haha, i’ve reverted back to the days when i’m logged in all day long, but rarely chatted with anyone. i’ll IM someone if it’s an especially slow day, or i needed a quick answer from someone. in all, i probably IM about 30 to 45 minutes a day, if at all.

  • Too Much. But I’m trying to get a life you see. xD

  • I don’t chat.  Ever.  I’d rather talk on the phone or use email.  I don’t text either.   :P

  • How do you know how many people are using G-chat?  And are you really stunned?  Like, you can’t move or anything?  JK.

  • I’m actually at work as I’m typing this.  The last half hour of the day is usually down-time, which is nice, so I go on the compies and check my site.

  • Depends on my job, I’ve had a job where we would communicate with other branches/head office via MSN, saves on the LD charges for the company, and you can use your personal ID if you want. It was win win for employee and employer.

  • not really.. i worked for the state and they blocked it and they also blocked meebo.. so that totally sucked for me.. made work suck.. haha.. so they can do it..

  • None, but I spend a lot of time on xanga and google search and You tube.  Not at work though, we have no internet.

RYC:  Good point about the tax payer thing, I didn’t think of that.  But yeah, I want to hear how NOT having a moment of silence hurts anyone. Except the teachers ears ( ha ha ) okay that was dumb.

  • gmail is supposed to be blocked at work … but there’s those that can get around that.

  • 8 hours, +/- 2 hours

  • gmail, yahoo, aim, facebook and xanga are all blocked at work.  we have internal instant messenger which is a pretty big time waster as well as efficiency gainer.   but my big time waster is still the good ol’ fashioned coffee break.

  • i do very little real-time chatting on any media other than my phone.

  • what?? when i logged into gmail at work it worked initially and then got blocked eventually

  • i used to work at macys west and they blocked google, but of course i had to find a way in and was gchatting all the time. it’s still my choice of instant messaging today when at work because only the elite, few important people will be able to im me.

  • To those who do I say. ‘for God sake…get a life.’

  • If blog commenting counts two. But we have a 100% filter at work so no service like that gets through. Oh wit, one does. Things that end with .org seem to get through the filter and messaging can happen that way. But no time for it in a school environment.

  • I’m loged in by phone. but only cheack it when I have a spare min. In some ways a lot b/c I’m a Survayor or I have so time here and there..

  • None.  Some companies do have decent firewall systems… besides, who wants to get paid for not doing what they should.  There’s plenty of satisfaction in doing a good job well.

  • Speaking of IM…. sure would be nice if we could send and receive Pulse via instant messaging

  • anywhere from 10 mins to 5 hours.

During work: 7 hours 55 mins.

  • somehow, my company figured it out right off the bat. i had to turn google chat off in order to get to my google mail. damn them anyway….cutting into my talk time and expecting me to work!?

  • my company blocked it pretty quickly. Their blocking software even blocks xanga some times…

  • im on it all day…i love how i dont have to DL anything to use it.  perfect for sneaky at work chatting!!  i figure it should be ok’d as long as work gets done…i mean whats the big deal?  shouldnt ur employees be held accountable for themselves?

  • I quit my job because people slack off in ways like that. Well, not just those ways. But getting on the computers and doing nothing, yes.

I spend an hour or so a day chatting I’d say, but at work, if it became addicting, I think others will end up noticing and it’ll become a big problem. In all fairness, of course a little would be okay (who wouldn’t do it here and there when it’s slow and there’s nothing to do) but those who chat all day at work – that’s just ludicrous! It’s exactly like you said . . no work is really getting done at all, probably. They’d be just as good sitting at home eating potato chips, so why not? Other hard workers will likely suffer, if not the whole business.

Moderation is like, the key to everything.

  • i hardly sign on. maybe once a month or two?
