DVD’s
I recently bought a DVD of one of my favorite documentaries: Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedian.
Turns out that my home PC doesn’t have the right codec, my laptop DVD reader is busted, and I got rid of my standalone DVD player years ago. So I can’t really watch the movie.
I remember when not having a functioning DVD player would’ve been a serious crisis. And yet now, it doesn’t seem like that big a deal. I’ll just make a note not to buy any more DVD’s. I can always download movies from iTunes or something.
Technology is moving so fast these days. I can’t believe that I’m already at the point where I don’t care about DVD’s. What’s next?!

Ahh, I know. It’s basically an information overload!
might try searching around for said codec, as i’ve had that problem in the past, even with some downloaded stuff i’d had.
Blu Ray. I do not buy DVDs anymore, just Blu Ray movies. They say Blu Ray is going to be future proof for a while, but we’ll see. Sony likes to be innovative and in the end it fails *ahem*UMD*cough*
I use Movielink or CinemaNow. That is, if I’m just renting. If I want to buy, I still go for the DVD.
you can always download the codecs necessary right?
ryc: lol. how are people supposed to know if i don’t let them know that i have pp?!
-ray leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Not buying DVD’s is a good thing… but seriously, just get the codec!
Darn, all these Xanga theme pages load up with the content almost all the way across the screen — so far over that I can’t see more than an inch of the left side. I’ve gotta figure out how to read your blog! LOL Can’t even see what I’m typing.
sorry, we’re not quite there yet in this house. some of my favorite movies were never even put on DVD; they’re certainly not part of itunes limited offering yet.
REALLY? I can’t imagine getting to that point… but that’s because I don’t know how to down load things yet… maybe if I stop being a technophob… which im woeking on… thanks to Xanga.
Maybe some day I’ll get there too… But i still like my CD’s and DVD’s… I love my liner notes… if I down load a song… where do I get those from? lol Ang
It’s bad enough… that the CD’s don’t have the art that the album covers had… *sigh*
Get the Phillips DVD player. It can be region-free
That movie had the BEST trailer ever!!
“You’re fired!”
“I’m fired…”
O.o
LoL
it is moving faster then we can keep up…
I agree. I am a music fan…and now, getting a song is a click of a mouse. Talking about advanced technology, I backup data on CD and still do so. But, some of my friends already call me an old fashion.
next up: special contact lenses that you can put on when you want to watch a movie. just sit back and watch as the moving images scamper across your retina. stick in accompanying ear plugs and have yourself a good time.
disclaimer: WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT THE CONSUMER STAY SEATED AND SECLUDED DURING THE MOVIE EXPERIENCE. ONE USE ONLY. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR USE BY THOSE WHO GET EASILY NAUSEATED.
i tried those contact lenses, but i didn’t have the right codec installed.
Try this: http://gordianknot.sourceforge.net/
If the codec you need is not in there I’ll be kind of surprised.
What is a DVD?
I still watch (and enjoy) LaserDiscs. Cuz I have a LaserDisc player. And a DVD player. And a rekkid player (the kind you play rekkids on), and I even have a wind-up Edison. No joke.
I’m Mr. Dead Media.
woo hoo..you’re a seinfeld fan? that makes you totally awesome in my book.
remember when DVDs were on that one lonely shelf in the rental place
Even with the advent of bluray and HD-DVD, I think DVDs still have quite a bit of staying power. What are you going to do about your new movie though?
Soon we won’t be buying CDs in stores. We’ll be buying miniature fucking USB drives that connect straight to mp3 players.
whats next? Glass panels that store exabytes of data. And can be wirelessly streamed around the home or office.
Install one now and they’ll add in MsSurface as a complimentary gift. That is if you dont already own one.
The future scares me.
I never thought the VHS would become obsolete, but now DVD’s?
Here’s a question: why are TV’s actually getting smaller?
Maybe I’ll stop carrying about DVD’s [and yes, I still have some VHS cassettes!] someday … maybe.
Cole2K provides a free codec package that includes the codecs for watching DVDs.
Codecs like the “Community Combined Codec” and VLC are good.
My youth pastor just got a hi-def TV for dirt cheap, but he’s really disappointed because all his DVDs look like crap on it with its 8000:1 contrast ratio and impossibly clear image. Haha.
I love the movies I download from iTunes, but it’s a bit disappointing the way they compress the colors to keep the file size small.
