  • The End

When I first watched it, I didn’t really “get” the ending to the Sopranos.  Over time, I found it like the Seinfeld finale where they all go to jail: viscerally disappointing in the moment, but intellectually satisfying over time.

Anyway the final scene ends with a bunch of random people in a diner.  Someone had the brilliant idea of looking up who the actors were that played these random people, and found some incredible results.  If you’re reading this from your subs page, drag your mouse over the new few paragraphs to read the white text (otherwise, be careful b/c there are some mild spoilers):

So here is what I found out. The guy at the bar is also credited as Nikki Leotardo. The same actor played him in the first part of season 6 during a brief sit down concerning the future of Vito. That wasn’t that long ago. Apparently, he is the nephew of Phil. Phil’s brother Nikki Senior was killed in 1976 in a car accident. Absolutely Genius!!!! David Chase is truly rewarding the true fans who pay attention to detail.

So the point would have been that life continues and we may never know the end of the Sopranos. But if you pay attention to the history, you will find that all the answers lie in the characters in the restaurant. The trucker was the brother of the guy who was robbed by Christopher in Season 2. Remember the DVD players? The trucker had to identify the body. The boy scouts were in the train store and the brothas at the end were the ones who tried to kill Tony and only clipped him in the ear (was that season 2 or 3?).

Absolutely incredible!!!! There were three people in the restaurant who had reason to kill Tony and then it just ends. This was Chase’s way of proving that he will not escape his past. It will not go on forever despite that he would like it to “don’t stop”. Not the fans!!! Tony would like it to keep going but just as we have to say goodbye, so does he.

If it weren’t for the internet, I wouldn’t understand 90% of what happens on TV shows these days.

EDIT: Ah ok, maybe not.  That’s the other thing about TV and the Internet – mucho conspiracy theories that amount to nothing.  Either way though, the director is clearly implying that there is more to the scene then meets the eye.  Can’t wait for someone to figure this all out, and post about it in all its geeky detail.

  • i never watched the sopranos

  • I was going to say that perhaps I am the only person in America who doesn’t watch the Sopranos but then I saw the first comment. LOL. Well, even though I never watched the show I did get caught up in the hype and was interested in how it ended.

That was interesting what Chase did but some might say it also left the door open for a movie or mini series.

It really is an interesting phenom how TV and the internet are becoming entwined. My husband and I watch Lost and I couldn’t believe it when he told me he started reading the Lost boards. He is the last person on Earth I would imagine reading boards about a TV show.

Oh and btw anyone coming straight to your site and reading the post will see the whole post because all of the text is in white at your site.

  • You are going to have 40 people comment and they will say they never watched the show but they will feel drawn to comment anyway.

  • Heh, thanks DAN for the complete outting. LOL. I don’t watch the Sopranos either but plenty of my coworkers do. One said that everyone in the diner had some connection to Tony, either him screwing them over or getting them killed. Tony made a comment earlier in the series that when you get whacked you’d never see it coming, which is some people’s theory about why it went black. If anything I think it will lead to different options for the producers and directors to open this up to possible DVD alternate endings and/or movie options. After all this I may end up putting this on Netflix and watching it.

  • I was rolling my eyes at comments one and two and then laughed out loud at theologian. I loved it. My initial thought was, Well, that’s a happy ending, if you don’t mind being nervous and looking at the door all the time, thinking anyone hitting the men’s room is going for a hidden gun a la Godfather One…I kind of took the sudden black-out as the lake words, about not knowing it’s coming. But not as Tony getting killed; more like, the audience didn’t know. We got a taste of it. But…I’ve watched in only once, and I miss a lot. Like, I heard Sil’s finger wiggled in the hospital, but I didn’t notice.

  • whew! i thought you were about to blow a hole through everything i wrote for the last 45 minutes!

  • I’ve been following all the theories closely as well and I like the fact that we can basically write our own ending.  One important thing is to remember the scene with Tony and Bobby a few episodes ago where they are sitting in the boat and Bobby says that you never see a hit coming.  When it does, everything just goes black.

The two endings that I like the most are …

    a)  Tony got whacked at the restaurant.  Because Meadow was parking, and reparking, her car, she wasn’t in the way (sitting next to Tony in the booth).

    OR

    b)  The audience, basically, got whacked.  We are the ones who are unable to continue, to see what happens in the lives of the Sopranos, because we are gone.

  • I hate people who ‘lol’, first off. Idiots.

And I thought the ending was good, frankly. I like things ending with ambiguity. A closed-off series, that’s no goddamn fun, that takes all the speculation out of it.

  • I’m wondering if this isn’t a little more time and thought then a television show deserves. lol Ang

  • wow, these are great findings. thanks!  and yeah, i’ve been comparing this finale to seinfeld’s.  everyone was disappointed but it clearly made sense afterwards.

  • “If it weren’t for the internet, I wouldn’t understand 90% of what happens on TV shows these days.”

    haha love it

  • the radio explained it. **spoiler**
he died. it was his perspective. you don’t hear the bell cuz he’s not alive. it’s back to that conversation about what bobby said. **spoiler**
The only thing on par with this ending was that of six feet under.

  • check out my post and let me know what your opinion is

  • wow i watch the supranos once in a blue moon love shelly.

  • heres what i think. phils nephew killed tony and he is now dead. when tony was talking to bobby at the lake and theyre talking about what it must be like to die, he says. ‘you probably dont hear it coming, everything just goes BLACK’

this is the best i could come up with but i wish cahse would just tell us for the sake of closure

  • I don’t watch the show but came across this site.
    Link

  • I wasn’t that upset with the actual ending, what upset me is that I think Tony was killed.  That upset me because I had a mild crush on the guy.  Sure he was really fat and bald, and a killer, but I still found him attractive.

AJ is going to be even more messed up.

I think I get too emotionaly attached to these shows.  But thanks for the info, because although I was emotionally attached and watched all episodes from day one, I would have NEVER known those fun facts.

  • hahaha nahh, pool-stick boy is one of my good guy friends..

  • I’m waiting for the DVD.  Mostly what I heard (up until this) has been disappointment, but I know enough not to trust anyone else’s opinion.  I’ll let you know what I think in 6 months or whenever the DVD’s come out.

  • I still have to see it but I think people who hated the ending are coming around to it being better then they thought…

  • i was kind of hoping for a typical mobscene slaughterfest.

  • I never watched the show but I feel drawn to comment anyway.

  • Lol, I’ve never watched that show but I felt drawn to comment anyway.

  • I did not wach the sopranos

  • HACKER ALERT???

Went to http://www.xanga.com/candyyoyo1314 and HER site remained stuck in my address bar…or whatever you call that thing that has http://www.xanga.com/john/597182461/the-end.html up there right now.  Had to shut down IE to get it out of there, because it stuck in no matter where i went on the internet

You know i’m a total SCHMUCK when it comes to computers…is that site some kind of phishing/etc. site  And you still ain’t answered how i get my REVEIWS tab back up top

  • ryc: i say NO, NO, NO!

  • I never watched it either, but figured that he got killed or could have been. The three guys walking thru the restaurant seemed suspicious to me. Plus it opens the way for a movie later on..I actually like endings like that which keep you guessing.

  • John, I understand that you are having a hard time finding interesting things to feature, but I get tired of coming to the Xanga home page and seeing the same people featured two and three times.  It makes one feel like you are only reading your friend’s posts.  I know I’ve talked about it to some other friends and they feel the same way.  Just thought I’d let you know.

  • I’ve never seen the Sopranos.  Maybe I should check out that website you linked to.  I might start watching more TV. lol

RYC:  I got the entry from an email.  I don’t know where it started from, lol.

  • hello john.  Nobody stops by my site and comments on my posts.  I am a tad concerned; please fix this problem for me.

  • Hey, I know that you dont know me and I dont know you, but I just felt I should comment. Have a great day, and God bless you!
