  • One last thing

I am making another video about themes, but this one is gonna be way better.  I’m gonna lay down a musical soundtrack, pan and scan over photos (documentary style!), and dub a voiceover (rather than just narrating a screencast in real time).

Umm… only one problem.  I suck at all this, and the software out there seems really hard to use.  I tried Microsoft Movie Maker – it doesn’t seem powerful enough.  And Pinnacle Studio is impossible to figure out.

I’d love your advice.  Should I persevere with Pinnacle Studio?  Try another program? My needs seem so simple but the software is so hard…

  • Wow, that’s awesome. Ya know, you guys do such great work and I just wanted to say that I truly appreciate it. Thanks.

  • I like to mix audio in a separate program (usually Sonic Foundry Acid 2.0) and then add it into Windows Movie Maker. I use Timeline view with the video expanded so I can delete any audio from the original video file. Once I get the video in the order and length I want, I put together the sound and add it in as the audio track in Windows Movie Maker.

If you want to do everything in Movie Maker, you could bring the audio files into movie maker and break them into clips, and then drag the clips you wanted to the Audio/Music bar. But when I do this, I have troubles with the preview timings working out correctly. Movie Maker usually includes more of the clips than I want in preview mode, so I cut back more, just to find that it was fine the first time cause it’s too short for the finished product.

    Good luck.

  • maybe adobe director?

  • Oh, and Windows Movie Maker isn’t so great at importing audio. And I haven’t yet figured out how to crossfade two tracks. Those two reasons plus the timing problems are why I usually use another program to edit the audio track.

  • I’d listen to DrCarasco…I often have and I’ve not been sorry.

  • use snag-it by tech smith

  • how complicated are you planning on making it? what other bells and whistles are you looking for?

  • I’m a professional video producer. My poison of choice in Final Cut Studio but for your purposes you may look into Sony Vegas. I’ve heard good things for your level of work. Ultimately though…it WILL be a labor of love as every good looking video is.

  • hey, i’ve got a question, why can I be a moderator on a mac :(

this makes me very sad…because I love being a moderator, but it makes me sad that it is not compatable with my computer…just wondering.

    thanks john,

    with much xanga love, thinkpinkpanther

  • Mid-read  I was going to ask you what you’re using . . . cuz I’ve been tasked to look into similar apps . . .  have you used Camtasia Studio or Adobe Captivate?  I’m  just starting to read/learn about’m, I don’t think they do sound tho. . .don’t know

  • I am really out of the loop with software but from what I’ve heard from friends, Adobe/Macromedia is the way to go for video editing.

  • You could ask me for help on the soundtrack; I’m a qualified elitist and I used to be a music critic.

  • if you want something easy to use and yet still powerfull/capable of creating somehting that looks good find a friend with a mac and use imovie.  For ease of use and decent quality it is the best thing out there.  I’ve used windows movie maker, pinnicale studious, adobe Premier, Final Cut, and Final cut express.  You can get something that looks great and is easy to create by using imovie.  For really high end stuff you need final cut or adobe premier but they both require a lot more expertiese to use.

  • I use Movie Maker sometimes to make little movies out of stills and clips, but I can’t compare it with any of the others because Movie Maker is the only one I know. It drives me to distraction, though, cause it freezes up my machine with very little provocation. Good luck with your project.

  • it`s sooo much better.=) thanksss for everything .;)

  • Sounds like a job for a “For Dummies” book.

I use movie maker sometimes, maybe you could figure out how to make what you want work. I’m still finding out how to do more and more things with it every time I use it.

Pinnacle Studio, I know nothing about.

    Anyways, good luck!

  • you must be an admin, because you don’t show up as being subscribed to my xanga but that’s apparently how you got to mine. i’m guessing all the admins have a fair share of subscriptions so that they can keep an eye on people especially flagged xangans or several people who complain about a specific user?

  • hey there

i saw u stopped by my site, thanks…feel free to stop by again

hope u get the video all sorted out

    take care

  • If free, powerful, and weird is your thing, you could try Zwei-Stein.

  • Try one of the ULEAD demos.

  • regarding your IE7 entry, i know exactly how you feel. i’m sure all web developers feel that way. before i only had to test primarily on IE6 and firefox and that gave me enough headaches already. now with IE7, i have 3 primary browsers to test and the headaches have grown, exponentially.

  • also, what screen capture software are you using? i remember i had to use one for one of my research classes when i was in college. we were deciding between two, camstudio and another one that starts with a M, but i can’t think of the name right now. for our experiment, we had to record people coding.

  • Movie Making is the one thing Macs got on PCs.

    I hate windows movie maker.

  • Anything that comes from Adobe requires a BA in Graphic Design and a BS in Computer Science to use effectively…or at least that’s been my experience.

Are you still taking nominations for Featured Posts?  Because This Guy has another fantastic post.
