  • An Open Letter to IE7

Oh IE7, you wascally wabbit.  You moved every single browser button into your own unique layout.  That was awfully clever!  Now I can’t rely on my years of experience with past browsers to spend time with you.  I especially admire how you hid the Help menu pulldown from my prying eyes.  I know I was probably harassing you, trying to figure out your darkest secrets!  It was so rude of me… please forgive me.

I guess you won’t be surprised to hear that I left you a long time ago for someone new.  Her name is Firefox 2.0, and she’s pretty cool.  Well actually, she’s not perfect.  Her memory management is horrible, so I have crash out of her on a regular basis.  Also when I type an apostrophe, sometimes a search box will randomly appear and not go away, forcing me to consider defenestration.  Also, if one of her browser windows crashes… every single other Firefox window also crashes.  This results in hours of productivity lost on a pretty regular basis.

But despite her many flaws, she’s a better browser than you.  Unfortunately, you and I still have to live together.  We have this Xanga kid together, and a lot of people use you to surf the site.  So I guess we’re stuck with each other.  However I have to warn you, I am starting to hate you with a passion.  You may want to consider getting an update from your boss in Redmond, so you don’t suck so much.

    Love,
    John

  • Everyone’s leaving IE for that Firefoxy lady!

  • I left IE for firefox years ago. I hate the apostrophe thing with a passion though. I have to not use contractions when that happens. Mozilla, fix this!!

  • lol, adorable.
Just stay together for the kids!!!

  • I love Firefox, too. Hmm, you called it a “she,” so I guess I know what that makes me. I don’t care, I still loathe IE. I don’t have as many problems with Firefox as you seem to have. I guess she loves me better than you.

  • firefox stopped working for me for a few days, while i went back to IE. then it fixed itself.

    that’s what i call service.

  • What do we have to do before IE will realize that she needs to change to get our love? I just hope she doesn’t try to kill Firefox, cause she’s hot/fine/other positive description.

  • lol, that’s adorable.

I’m with Lady Firefox currently too! Hmm, I guess IE is looking lonely these days.

  • ROFL

Sounds like my note to Vista that I have not written except in my head.

  • bahahah! very nice.

  • I haaate IE7 tooo! It always crashes on me and I can’t edit html in Xanga posts! It just goes to a blank page. If I change to the old edit settings it let’s me. IE7 is horrible! I recently started using Firefox more as well. I am not sure if I have the latest edition. I am afraid to update that now too!

  • I left IE ofr opera back at IE 4 or 5 and I switched to firefox after opera started crashing. I have a few problems with firefox but it is so much better then IE(which seems to be looking more like the beautifull fox every new incarnation)

  • i like firefox, but i don’t like that some of my pretty stuff don’t show up in it.  and i seem to have issues with it, so i will just stay with ol’ ie…

  • Mozilla Firefox is a slut who sleeps with practically everyone on the ‘net. I hear that she’s a bisexual fox.

  • I’ve been using Firefox for quite awhile but I have one problem with Firefox and Xanga – very often when I am posting a comment on a Xanga post and I hit the enter button, Firefox will crash. I would say this happens on a daily basis. One of my Xanga pals was having this same problem and went back to IE. Some days it is tempting but I abhor the bulbous IE look.

  • ugh yea. ff’s memory management is annonying. but i use it anyway.

    opera, anyone? =)

  • Aw, poor IE. What did it ever do to you? Aside from screw with your computer, life, and even mental health. I mean, just because it’s abusive parent MS created a child that prefers to give ease-of-access to thieves instead of ease-of-use to users, why the harshness? Firefox?? Oh c’mon, surely you don’t expect the hordes to give up their relaxation-free browsing by switching to a more reliable creature like a fox?

Sarcastically yours thru the latest Mozilla animal,
    JAM

  • so THATS the stupid key that sets that annoying search box on firefox >.<

  • I don’t hate IE.

I’ll grant that it was quite frustrating of them to move every single button around when they released IE7.  I’ve tried Firefox, though, and at this point I’d just rather have a clunky, copycat, behind-the-times browser that works consistently than a shiny new so-many-extra-features-I-can’t-even-begin-to-imagine-what-they’re-all-good-for browser that crashes while I’m typing and has issues running add-ons that have been much better streamlined into IE7.

Call me old-fashioned…maybe I just like sticking with the familiar.

  • you can fix the apostrophe issue with firefox under tools—>options–>advanced—>general—> and then uncheck “search for text when i start typing.”

  • IE6, hahaha. XP

    My friend uses Opera.

  • The apostrophe thing is so irritating. However, it’s a small price to pay. Intarwub Exploder is so slowwwwwww. And also, I just don’t like it. I switched to Firefox 2 years ago and never even thought about switching back. I pay most of my bills online and there is one, just one, that makes me use IE. No idea why… But it makes me sad.

  • what a beautiful letter

yayfirefox. i dont have that apostrophe problem.

  • Just FYI, you can get all the normal menu drop-downs from IE if you press the ALT key.

Personally, I like IE7… it’s good enough anyway. I despise Firefox and everything else that started as Netscape – though I hear Opera is ok, but I’ve only used it on my Wii.

  • Oh, another thought… I used IE7 for a short time before they released the new Firefox 2. I couldn’t help but notice that the IE redesign left it looking incredibly like FireFox!

  • If you absolutely *must* use IE7 on a regular basis (for testing sites, etc), try the Maxthon Beta. It’s got the “improved” IE7 rendering engine wrapped in a sane UI. :)

  • I use IE7 and have yet to have a problem.  Tried firefox a few months back, and it drove me nuts….

  • You did the right thing. ;]

  • FF gives AMAZING head. IE… not so much.

Though I understand what you mean about the attachment thing, you kinda grew up with IE so it’s hard to just up and leave. Still paying child custody payments? :)

  • srsly firefox. what’s up with your memory.
and that apostrophe problem!!! it WAS so annoying.. but I haven’t encountered it since like v1.5 … I wonder why it even exists. It makes no sense.

but still better than IE anything. especially now they’ve hidden that top bar with file edit view help etc.. wtf

  • so i wasn’t the only one seeing that search box thing. good to know.

  • defenistration is an awesome word!
    …just thought I’d mention that…

  • haha, i m sticking to IE6.

  • Two of your issues can be fixed with Firefox extensions: SessionSaver, magically restores your last browsing sessions after a crash, or just when you close and want to pick up where you left off (there are variations on the name, that’s the good one), and IE Tab which renders IE within a Firefox tab. Not sure if that one is good for IE7 but I haven’t had to open IE for anything or for any site since I installed it.

  • Very well put John

As much as I hate IE and as much as I like Firefox, you describe the two horrible bugs in the FF program that keeps me from using it as a regular.  Plus, I still find too many ecommerce sites I use that do not work with FF.

IE7 is no improvement at all and has horrible problems dealing with sites that rely on javascript.

  • Yes, I have to say it is Firefox for me too. I have also been using Opera, IE7 & Flock. Firefox though is my favourite. I only use the others just to test my own web sites, to make sure that they are compatible with other Browsers otherwise it would be Firefox all the time.I am a great fan of open source, I don’t think I will ever buy another Office Package again, especially now Open Office appears to be so compatible with Word and Excel etc. Only brought that up as I understand Firefox is open source. While discussing these products I would like to say that I have been totally converted to Xanga as far as Blogs are concerned. I am hoping you guys will diversify into general Site hosting as well. You are doing a great job.

  • oh how true this is!  but i get sad because your lady firefox is not xanga friendly.

  • I hated it so much I put IE6 back on. Well OK our son did it while he was visiting one day.

As for Firefox when I visited a friend in Oregon I found that won’t work right in the PSP groups I’m in. All my images posted were links and people want to see the image and not have to click on links.

  • I already abandoned IE7. Firefox all the way! :)

  • I agree with what you said about IE is does suck and fire fox is better but I don’t have as many problems with it as you seem to have.

  • Rofl…when you press ‘ it randomly makes a quick search xD

  • Hear hear! Even with Firefox’s problems, I will never cheat on her.

  • IE7 is nice but,
I use Opera and Firefox. I like the spell checker on firefox and the mouse gestures/nickname (‘x’ for xanga!) for the latter two browsers.

  • The act of polygamy eh?
You might reap consequences later which is why I will always stay true to Firefox.

And wow, finally someone used the word defenestrate in their blog.

  • LOL that’s some funny stuff

  • IE7 also messes with some PCMCIA wireless modems…

But also  the flip side…  IE7  does not hang your laptop after standby.   I’ve noticed Firefox  tends to make me have to do a reboot or wait 3 minutes for the machine to work its swap file.

    No doubt a MS feature..

    Thanks for the good wishes.

  • I once wrote an open letter to the minister of education…  I’d love to dig that up.

  • OPERA is the coolest web browser ever.  You should consider cheating.  I know you’ve only heard this about 5 times, but still, I would trade in Firefox and IE7 for it anyday.

good luck to you on your search for the most perfect web browser.

  • yay for firefox 2.o. dude, IE7 copied a lot of firefox, but it’s still not the same. i especially hate how IE7 remembers pages so it’ll load faster. because of that, i often get old page info. xP

  • I truly love how you give them personalities.
It makes it way more interesting to read. ^_^

  • *blink… blink blink*

Maybe you should get out into the sun more, pal. I’m concerned about your “little conversations” with innanimate objects. We in the biz call this “crazy”.

    Really… see some people sometime…

    :)

  • thanks for the link about the apostrophe thing! i’ve run into that problem so many times.

    yay for firefox =)

  • IE7 actually seems a lot better if you actually have a Vista. I mean, A LOT.
I can’t use the internet on that computer (as of yet), so I have to look at the POS on my XP. But I use Opera though, so it doesn’t matter.

  • IE7…stinks! I have never had so much trouble since downloading it. Well okay, I didn’t voluntarily download it. I hit a button on a toolbar by accident and away we went. I have to say that it is single-handedly responsible for slowing down my computer and causing constant crashing. First free minute I have, I am uninstalling it.

  • I don’t get the whole problem with IE7. I managed to fit eveythign I need up there, and even though I have issues with IE7, it still serves me realllly well, and I never understood Firefox. In fact, I generally dislike it’s design. I also have ALOT of friends who use Firefox.

  • I love my OE7 with a passion.  My help menu isn’t hidden and the new options with tabs made me very happy.  I am a microsoft fan but have used other browsers.  I always come back as I find it so easy to use.  One thing, I still have problems when I am writing a new weblog, I am still unable to access some of the options at the bottom of the weblog for instance the grading options A-E or whatever it is.  Minor flaws to me, I just work around it.

  • I tried to make it with IE7 and IE6 hit me with the frying pan over the head. It was a very unstable romance so I stayed with 6 until the fox came along. Bye bye 6 and 7 for the Fox. I still crash once in a while but then when I go to start back up the Fox gives me a chance to restore where I was or start a new fling. I don’t remember either 6 or 7 giving me that chance. She is pretty foxy alright.

  • Mac OS X – Safari!

  • I completely agree. You never know how much IE sucks until you have to do web design. But I’ve never had the apostrophe problem – maybe that’s just a Windows thing?
