  • Because it makes them look uneducated and to me it discredits everything they write about.

In short: i tink dey luk stoopit

  • I’m not sure why it annoys me, but it does.

  • There are a few cases.  If English is their native language (or close enough to – my first language was cantonese but I was born and raised in Canada), they have no real excuse for bad grammar and spelling.  If it is out of laziness, that’s pathetic as well.  How difficult is it to make two extra keystrokes?  There are also some grammatical mistakes that are incredibly common, and I don’t see why.  The difference between “there”, “their” and “they’re” is a big one, but it’s something I learned in grade two.  But bad grammar annoys me more than bad spelling does.

  • they offer spellcheck for a reason.

  • it’s funny how people don’t use grammer correctly.
    or spell incorrectly.

but i don’t understand why people are actually frustrated by this if they already understand what the person is trying to write/type.

  • it USED to be that computers and the internet were for GEEKS. you know, people with an IQ above room temperature. now everyone’s plugged in, and we geeks are pissy about it.

  • I write an advice column and people write long letters with all their I’s not capitalized and I have to go through and fix each one of them. I want to slap them.

  • Xanga should have spelling and grammar checker … hihi

  • it doesn’t bug me!

  • i dun noe lolz! theyre jus jelus i dink~~**

    Ugh.

  • OMG. Ow….my bleeding eyes and aching head! lol

  • this reminds me of flowers for algernon.

  • Ugh, this whole post made me twitch. I’m bugged by spelling errors because I think they make the younger generation look ignorant, whether they are or not. But purposeful “errors”, i.e. ‘net-speak, make me turn into a crotchety old lady. “What is wrong with kids today?” and “What are they teaching them in those schools?” have spewed from my mouth. It’s very sad.

    I’m a self-admitted grammar nazi, too.

  • It bothers me as well… I don’t know why, but it annoys me to no end!! O___O It’s not cool at all, and I have the feeling some people must think it is cool or something.

  • It annoys me because it’s “shortcuts” that aren’t, just laziness. It actually takes more work to dO ThIs tYpE oF tHiNg, so I don’t know why they can’t just spell out two more letters to say “see you” and not “see u”. It just bothers me, because it’s stupid laziness.

In IMs I actually don’t mind, but when it’s a media that is all about words such as message boards and blogs, how you write speaks volumns about yourself.

  • reading this blog made my brain hurt.

It bothers me.  A lot.  It just looks ignorant.  Sometimes I’ll use it as a joke when referring to something/some one but I will not type an entire blog in such dribble.

  • Pretty much without fail, when I meet someone on the internet who talks like that, they are not very intelligent people. I’m not bugged by the grammar and spelling, I’m just biased against idiots. Yeah it might be a stereotype, but it’s based on a wealth of experience.

  • After years of working in an CCU setting, I used shortcuts and medical slang  so often I almost have given up on the spelling. It was not a stong subject for me. Add to that my inability to speed type (mind faster than fingers) and I make some real tragic errors. What really is interesting to me is how many people view this as uneducated…it just shows how shallow minded and truly ignorant they are.

  • oh good lord…. just stop it… haha

  • it don’t frustrate me 2 much as long as i can read it but i’ll be nice to read proper english. its just easiER to read than translating the entire thang just to understand it.

  • It depends on age for me… If they’re still in grade school, I can accept all the foreign ways they type. Hell, I used to type the same way! (Look at my first blog entries if you want proof. =X) I don’t do that anymore, ever since I transitioned to typing normally in my last year of high school. I believe that by the time someone is in college, they better damn well know how to type properly. Shortcuts are okay, but I’m tempted to correct every spelling error my friends make. ><

  • My eyes!!!!!1111oneone111!!!

Nah, I don’t tolerate it much when it’s something like a long post or something similar. No one’s going to want to read it if they can’t take the time to make it easy and appealing to read! If you’re not going to take the time to type something correctly, I shouldn’t take the time to read it ;P If it’s on an IM or a text message, that’s understandable because it gets annoying when you have to say something quickly.

  • Ooohh… it bugs the crap out of me to see bad grammar and spelling. It bothers me even more that people tolerate it. We are teaching our next generation that it’s OK to be uneducated. It’s not OK. I firmly believe that a lack of education will be the downfall of this country.

  • I saw a report on the local news a few weeks ago, about kids’ grammar and text messaging. A teacher they interviewed said something to the effect of “I don’t see a problem with it – at least they’re writing.” o_O

  • Because it’s just irritating. While I understand using it on the cell, there should be a line. When it starts getting submitted into college level papers (no, I am not kidding), it’s just completely ridiculous. Students have turned in papers to me with sentences like this: i guess the reason i liked the book was cuz it reminded my of my family. its hard to find books that speak about ur family.

    W.T.F.?

  • the problem is that depending on what they use/how much they do, it can make it unintelligible, or at least very hard to read. Not everybody knows what “ppl” and such mean…and while I admit most people can figure it out easily enough, I have definitely seen some times where it gets too ridiculous and I have trouble figuring out what they’re trying to say.
So I guess my point is, I don’t mind some…but too much just gets annoying.

  • i purposely misspell some things becuz (because) i’m too lazy.    but if you dont have a real reason for bad grammar, speak in proper English.  I can’t stand ebonics or pseudo-ebonics. mebbe (maybe) i’m too edumacated.  lol…

  • I think it’s a matter of context. I highly doubt that people use correct grammar constantly. However, I think that everyone should KNOW correct grammar and use it when appropriate. If one uses crappy grammar, spelling, and text messagin abbreviations on one’s blog, I am going to think that they don’t really care that much about it, so I’m not going to read it. Simple as that. Anything good takes effort, people just don’t want to put effort into things. We want to be smart and educated, but we don’t want to buckle down and study. We want to be thin and pretty, but we don’t necessarily always want to have healthy diets and exercise. Things are just a matter of cause and effect.

  • Look John I try my best, sometimes I’m in a hurry, it’s not frikin English glass

  • !!!!!!!!!
i could barely finish reading this post!

  • lmfao dat shiiet bugz me out 2!
i def dink u got ur point straight.

needless to say i actually read through your post in a breeze, that’s not so
cool. i guess it doesn’t really matter how it’s spelled since it’s online… but
it definitely would tick me off if people spelled like that continuously in an
academic environment. which i guess is only bound to happen because our youth has
such a habit to tYpe LyKe dis nd speLL lyke morons. yay for america’s education
system being flushed down the toilet. & people wonder why our children
    can’t compete with foreign countries.

  • its annoying really, and the best part is if you’re boosting and something like that comes up in the creative category.

  • I didnt realize how much it bothered me until I read this blog!!  Aaagh! Very annoying.

  • Most of my friends type like that, so if I annihilated all of the people that I know that do that, I’d only have two friends left. That would be a very sad world considering I only speak to one of those people on a regular basis.

I find it more amusing than annoying. I used to do it pretty often, but then I read an article a few years ago. It convinced me decide that I didn’t want to contribute to the massive destruction of the English language.

[Gotta love the FireFox 2.0 spell checker. <3]

  • oh man.. don’t even get me started, john.

Why I hate is when people spell “cum” for “come”.. not only is “cum” vulgar, but why can’t you just put ONE extra letter to the word and make it correct? Is it that hard?

I’m going to blog about this tomorrow…

    –rich

  • AwWwW, DaT DA truf rite der.

  • What’s funnier is that most of the time they CAN spell. My 12 y.o. types like that and it drives me NUTS because I know she can spell but apparently that kind of bad grammar is msn speak because they are too lazy to type out the entire word!

  • Firefox has spell checker built in. Opera has it as an add-on.
I’ve started picking up poor grammer habits over IM convos because i’m busy. It’s bad because it makes it difficult for the recipient to read what i’m writing. Then again some poor grammer phrases are socially very “internet.” Does that make it acceptable? Hmm.

  • iT REALLY DOESNT MATTER AS LONG AS YOU KNOW WHAT THEY’RE SAYiN – iF YOU DONT LiKE THE WAY THE WRiTiNG LOOKS OR WHATEVER – DON’T READ iT. SiMPLE AS THAT……….

  • Because it takes longer to read.

At the same time, txtspk was only born in the first place from when there were (and sometimes still are) limited numbers of characters on a phone, and thus is cheaper to write shorter words. In IM or general posting though, it’s just laziness…

  • Perhaps it is bothersome because we wonder how in the world they have either 1. graduated high school or 2. made it this far in school. It drives me crazy when one of my students asks me how to spell something simple–especially if it is a monosyllabic word! (example: “Mrs. W how do you spell reality?”–That one is not monosyllabic, but it is EASY!)

  • It doesn’t bother me but very little does.

  • Eh, I was so good in English my English teachers in HS wanted me to be one. But I didn’t. Me with a class of kids who don’t want to be there? Heh, no thanks.

I do notice the typos and such, but I just figure these guys are probably a lot better at math than I am. I think when it bugs people, it’s just an ego thing – makes them feel all warm and smug inside about their own ability.

  • hahaha!  I love the way you put that post

  • It does annoy me if you’re trying to be serious on your blog and you’re typing like a 12-year old or something, you know? But I do admit, with all these cell-phones and internet capable whatchamacallits [you know you can even get online using your Nintendo Wii?! and Sidekicks too!], it’s a little hard when you want to spell everything out.

  • That is a simply fantastic entry.

  • =( you make me cry.

  • it bugs me only if it they can’t get back to the correct spelling when they need to do so. that’s the crux.

  • It pisses me off because it’s NOT how words are spelled. Maybe is not “mebbe.” That is not “dat.” WTF! It’s not spelling mistakes that bother me, like grammar as grammer, but it’s when people are just too lazy to type out the whole word. Maybe we’re not in class right now, and maybe we’re in a hurry, but I still don’t a see a good reason why people can’t just type the whole thing out instead of using ridiculous abbreviations that are only- what, one or two letters less? To me, it just reflects stupidity and laziness.

  • Lack of intelligence isn’t cool, even for teens like myself. However, I hella use slang and abbreviations when permitting, and as long as it isn’t hard to understand I am generally content.

  • I kind of want to punch you in the face right now.

  • I read somewhere if you can understand the hard consonants and either the begging or end of word, your brain can still figure it out. Crap wish I remember how that whole thing goes….

  • OMG – LOVE IT!!!

  • Ahhhhh! I can’t even look at this post!

  • Having learned Latin, it is most interesting to note the steady progression through time to modern day Italian, and English. I’ve always wondered how languages change. Living in this time, it’s become quite apparent. You know it’s gotten bad when they make movies about it, and businesspeople use the lingo too!

  • yeah meh two :)

  • I’m 13 and perfectly capable of typing.

When used in IM or in texting, sure, it’s much more efficient and therefore encouraged. Nothing pisses me off more when people use correct capitalization on IM. Still, while I recognize people’s right to type as they wish, this is a blogging site, which means I’m a little ticked off when I see people typing as if they have a cell phone keyboard.

  • I may have to unsubscribe to you if you continue to post in this manner.

    *giggles*

  • It just bothers me, it makes then look stupid. I agree with LHBC_Andy’s point…

  • man, oh man!  That stuff drives me nuts!  I can tolerate it a bit, but usually I don’t read things with poor spelling, text, or grammer.  It gives me the impression that the author is either immature or a true idiot!
