STATE OF THE UNION
Hello! We at Xanga have been hard at work lately, cranking out
new features. And yet looking at the features soon to be
released, I am realizing that I have never been more excited!
We’ve built so many features over the last year… and in the next
month, I think that everything will start to come together. More
on that soon.
A few random thoughts:
- The privacy features we’ve launched have been really well
received overall! I’ve noticed some concern that Xanga is closing
itself off from the world
. We definitely don’t want to do
that, so we will be slotting in some optional features to open Xanga up
a bit
.
- Messages have also been wildly popular, as have comment
alerts. I have to admit, I started out pretty skeptical on both
of these – but now I love both features! - We’ve added multimedia everywhere: Photos, Video, and Audio…
they each have their own blog, and also have their own tab in the new Editor
(and a sweet new Album feature too). We also greatly increased
our upload limits – Video and Audio are unlimited for now, while Photos
offers 1 GB
.
Plus we’re supporting easy uploads through our new downloadable
Uploader. I’ve been surprised that more people aren’t using the
uploader – but the people who use it swear by it! - We’ve basically addded Tags to everything. One surprise:
people who use tags are reporting that their traffic is going
up?! Wouldn’t have guessed that one, but it makes sense.
I’d love to hear about what you think about all these features. How are we doing?

I have been noticing a lot of closed doors here – I opted out of footprints, so I run into a lot of footprint locks. It’ll be interesting to see how you make things more open.
I really like the privacy features.
I think it’s interesting that you didn’t mention the rating system. That’s one feature I’m not really overjoyed about. I still think having to verify your age with a credit card is ridiculous.
You probably don’t really care what older people think, since I am sure your users are, by a vast majority, youger and quite in tune with all these features. But you asked! : ) As a person to whom computer usage in general does not come easily, all these changes can be confusing and overwhelming. Is there a place that provides more explanation that I am overlooking? Honestly, I tend to ignore any features that don’t immediately apply. It’s also a time issue – it takes time to understand and use every new feature, and I don’t always have the time to devote to it. It’s great to see advances; it just seems like it’s changing so quickly that it’s hard to keep up. Just my impression.
I am crazed with joy over the photo uploader. Best invention of 2006!
I’ve been a member since 2001 and I used to be a daily xangan with hits of over 1000 a day…..but i get overwhelming and i decided to take a break from xanga last year. Well, all the new features have honestly brought me back into the fray and I realized wy I missed it so much in the first place. Thank you again for improving xanga and keeping it a living & breathing thing that can grow.
P.S. To this date I still have not signed up for MySpace and am a proud Xangan =)

the uploader is definitely faster and the security features are a dream. But may i suggest a custom public page for all classic users? I know its still possible to change things like background picture and with some scripts change the module bar to the right but more flexiblity please, the banner can stay though. Dont want to sound too greedy

I might have missed it, but is there such thing as blocking one Xanga user? There is this user that keeps going to my Xanga and his footprints are always logged. I want to block him, but I don’t want to turn on friends lock. Is there anything I can do at this moment? Thank you!!

Lots of neat features and yet sometimes we find xanga bugs. If you know how to work the system your ok. Cant wait. My favorite thing is the uploader. I loves it. Will have to check out everyones blog to find out what else is going on. Cant wait.

Suggestions not complaints:I would like to see a link in the side line to Boost and Featured Content.Aalso a way to know if you have been boosted or featured,(footprints do usually alert you to that.).I would also like if you would explain how they work ,as well as all the new features in an easier way to find.I would like to see a higher limit to the blogring we can join.

Xanga has really added a ton of great features. No complaints here. Pete.
The tightrope between privacy of legit users, and abuse by the immoral, unethical, and criminal is always going to be tough. However, about the only response that could legit impact all equally would be to shut down xanga, and I’d prefer that didn’t happen.
I’ve probably a half dozen blog pages. xanga is the ONLY one that gets updated nearly daily. The next most frequently is probably once a month,and after that, the others get updated maybe once or twice a year.
I find xanga easier to use, populated by the people with whom I prefer to communicate, and MUCH MORE FAMILY FRIENDLY (except for the porn that appears in the boost area) than the other sites.

That’s true, traffic does go up when you tag stuff. I think it’s ‘cuz places like Google, etc. look at tags for searches??? Maybe…anway, they’re pretty cool.

I signed up for premium, and I’d really like more flexibility than skins gives me. I personally am a fan of (forgive me for mentioning a competitor’s site) Blogger’s layout features. Something totally flexible would be nice.
All the new features are great… though I must say, a nice addition would be Herman Ng. Look forward to seeing that feature by 2007!

I’d really appreciate it if you could add the tagging option to the old weblog editor. I don’t like the new editor, but that’s the only one that lets you put tags to your posts! Please fix that…

First off, I congratulate you and the team for such frequent updates to Xanga. There are a few things I would like to address though..ever since signing up for Premium, there has been less and less “advantages” of actually being a Premium member. One of the few advantages that we do get, Xanga Skins, is waaaay outdated. The last post on the Xanga Skin site was four years ago!
You all are doing a fantastic job! I just noticed that I can now block people directly from my Footprints log… that’s amazing! Thank you!

Doing great. I’m still a fan of the old-school editor (The plain text-and-HTML one), but I’m digging all the new features. One thing that would be nice: Allowing Xangans to upload some tunes and then set it as a background sound or an embed player.. Just a thought.

I have a problem with the photo module .. I’m not sure why but the pictures are spread out in a line and not rotating in the little nine sqares.
I’ve noticed it’s like that on other photo modules I saw within the past 2 days or so. I’m not sure if it’s a bug on my computer.. or something with xanga. (?) any help would be appreciated..

How about a feature to allow you to remove your coment… say you post something and then really should have thought it out more before posting…. maybe have an option to recall a posting or message for tht matter…. You guys are doing great keep up the good work… I like the message options and being able to clean up your sent mail as well…

I have a question for you. I reported someone recently, as they had a large picture of a man’s penis on their site. I’m wondering. Is this considered okay? That if we put an adult rating on it (they hadn’t), it’s okay? I believe the girl who had the picture up was a minor herself.
How exactly does this work? I’m a composition professor, and I use xanga as a means of journaling for my students. (wonderful tool, eliminates paper, they can protect with just me if they choose). I would be horrified if, as part of my assignment, they stumbled across a site such as this. (I teach at a private university)
My question is, if you allow 13 year olds to have xangas, how do you keep them from stumbling across a penis? In effect xanga is contributing to the delinquincy of minors, providing porn free of charge and without warning (at least in this case).
Xanga is privately owned and has the right to police its content. I realize this is a large job.

I’m not a big fan of receiving email that I didn’t ask for… I realize that the comment alerts that I get wouldn’t exactly be considered SPAM (they’re not), but they’re unwelcome nonetheless. Is there (or could there be) a way of turning this feature off?
The reason I consider it a nuisance, I prefer to read my comments from my blog, as I’m on Xanga for 90% of the time that I’m online anyway. Therefore, I’m a big fan of the delete button on my email… or not, depending upon how you look at it.

That, and could it be possible to change block settings for individual members? Maybe, permissions? Like, one member can be blocked completely, another can be blocked from comments, but not viewing, etc.
Also, like SteveJ mentioned, the editor is giving me issues. I keep getting an information bar that tells me I can’t use ActiveX. The editor then tells me it won’t work. I click “Cancel”, it does some stuff, and then it works fine.

Tags? Traffic? Really?
Deleting comments would be awesome! Sometimes you mess up when writing comments on someones entry.
Well, it probably depends on the tags… I get probably a half dozen or more hits a day from tags, a dozen or more hits from the boost site, several dozen from subscribers, and about 200+ from various spiders (google, msn, yahoo, and others I can’t identify).
I find xanga is up more frequently than myspace, has less offensive advertising than myspace, and in most cases has the set of features I prefer. Two things on Myspace that I miss – please note… I am NOT asking you to implement these, just mentioning two things that i end up using myspace for.
1. this is a trivial thing, but I like being able, on myspace, to see when people on my friend’s list have a birthday coming up. Sometimes a xanga blogger doesn’t mention it, or is self-concious, or is just too busy to comment for a few days. It’s fun to know someone’s birthday is coming up, so you can give them well wishes.
2. This one is the biggest reason I use myspace. There are a lot more music bands on myspace… or at the very least, it has been easier, to date, for me to FIND the bands on MySpace, than it is on Xanga.
Question – I’ve read several times lately that people perceive that xanga usage is going down. I understand that’s not something you want to confirm or deny. But are there plans for addressing membership, in general? I mean, I don’t think I’ve seen an advertisement, or read a positive article mentioning Xanga. Maybe, at the very least, having a page on Xanga where positive press is the highlight (and perhaps even showed up on the boost “news” page) would provide people with material to forward along to their friends, etc.
Lastly, will the xanga dash software be upgraded in the near future? I’d love to see the bug with current comment highlighting fixed.
i have a lot of visitors who aren’t from xanga… it would be great if they could at least leave a comment… just like in blogger.com

Hi I put friends lock on my site a couple days ago
and I’m signing in xanga with other accounts I have (that are not “friends” to my site) and visiting my page to see if it [Friends Lock] works, but it doesn’t, because I can still see my page
now it was working a couple days ago
but it isn’t now
I’m also noticing some footprints on my site, of people who aren’t “friends” and shouldn’t be able to see my site
I’m pretty good with computers and I think I’m doing everything right

I’ve noticed a lot more add’s around lately from Victoria’s Secret and such types of adds.
I Know that you guys have Lot’s of people that joined Xanga just because they got fed up with myspace having all of their adds of like nature (Fetureing Girls and their clevage)
seriosuly… Lot’s of people just don’t want to see that.
…you guys can control what kinds of adds you use right?…..
Anyways, Just to let you know. I think if those kinds of adds keep increasing….even if they stay at the level they’re at now…You’ll lose lots of people who chose this over myspace, just because you DIDN’T have adds like that.
Personaly, that was one of the clencher things that made me come to you guys and not Myspace.
…and now that I’ve been useing it, I see I like the set up a lot more also =) (So good job!…I Love xanga!!!)
…but the fact that i didn’t have to worry about shirtless girls popping up all over the place was one of the major factors that got me here in the first place.

I downloaded the Xanga Uploader but somehow I just never get around to using it…it’s a great feature, definitely worth having. Much easier to use than a browser uploader.
I think it’s good that kids have the option to “close off” their Xanga from the outside world–just don’t make it the default, as that could get annoying :p.

To be honest, I was very upset over my site being Ex rated….I understand that this rating system serves to protect children. And that’s absolutely fine by me…
On the other hand, I don’t like the idea of the whole site sortI think there should be a better option to confirm the age requirement because 1) a lot of people including myself are not comfortable giving out credit card number online 2) there are a lot of people here and in other countries who are over 18 yet don’t have credit cards.
If my site was rated EX for posting up Halloween pictures, I am sure there are thousands of other sites will go through the same thing. I spent so much time uploading those photos and if I knew about those strict rules on ratings, I would not have uploaded any of those pictures on Xanga but somewhere else.
Don’t get me wrong here – Xanga is still one of the best… But, I would rather wish having a partial restriction on selective entries or pictures than labeling the whole site as sexually explicit, turning all visitors away.
At least, now, I am glad that it’s all resolved so quickly. I will be cautious about posting anything on Xanga from now on, keeping the rating system in mind.

In my privacy settings, I’ve had the “Search Engines” option set at “no” for an extremely long time, and I have never seen a change in my footprints of how often a search engine visits my site. So far, today, I’ve had about 20. One day I even tried setting it to “yes” to see if it would have the opposite effect, but it didn’t. (And yes, I did change it back to “no” afterwards with the same result as before.)
I think this issue has been talked about before, but I’m not sure.
If you could give me a little bit of info on how to stop this, that’d be great.

btw, i don’t know if it’s just me? but i have some compatibility issues with getting the photo/video/audio choosers to work correctly in firefox. i always have to switch over to ie to get it to work. is it just me?
I don’t see why Xanga cannot have blogs for blogrings (like livejournal). I really don’t see what the use of a Xanga blogring is, at the moment, if it can only “link” individuals by a link.
but otherwise, yay!
Footprints Lock blocked me from about half of my Xanga friends. I’m not willing to turn on Footprints because no one needs to know where I’ve been and when.
I would like to see the Messages made easier to use. Deleting messages is a pain. How about some checkboxes and a “Delete All Selected Messages” pushbutton?

The thing is, Cycle 2 is premiering December 6 and we are freaking out about casting.
We have a few applicants, but we need 10 finalists.

perhaps you can consider letting users stick the a song onto the page directly instead of or on top of a separate audio blog? that will be so cool
one of the other sites i’d tested (mutiply.com) has tweaked alot of their features and its looking alot neater (and hell lot faster!) than what it used to be. no harm checking out what other sites had been doing to upgrade their features

Is there any chance of having the option for non-xanga users to be able to comment? I know this is leaning towards the exact opposite of all the recent new features (friends only, xanga lock, etc) but I WANT random people to be able to comment. Maybe a feature similar to what blogger offers, where people who comment can choose xanga, other, or anonymous? I get the feeling xanga is trying to compete with myspace, but I just want an easily accessible blog because I’m too lazy to switch to typepad or wordpress!
I think the comment alerts are really cool, but I turned them off because they double up with my xanga feedback. I would turn the feedback off instead and know about stuff when it happens, but there isn’t a subscriber alert, and if new people find me I would like to subscribe back if I know them.

i’ve noticed that the footprints counter on the left side of the screen has been counting up, even though the names of the “footprinters” does not change. so for example, if i check it at a certain time during the day, there are 4 footprints and four people who have viewed the site; however, at another time, the footprints do not log more users who have viewed the site, but the footprint counter has changed to 8. i’ve noticed this a couple times now, so i’m wondering if there are any possible ways some particularly wily users have devised to circumvent the footprints lock. it’s almost as if there is a xanga ghost that viewed my site without leaving a footprint, but left some xanga protoplasm…
or, is it possible that you log a footprint whenever you click back into your own site via a comment on someone else’s blog, but the footprint log does not log your user name (since you are yourself)?
anyhoo, i’m hoping that friends lock will shut it off completely from xanga ghosts! btw, THANKS for all the awesome features you are putting on the site!
well i have a problem. I have all these jackasses reading my xanga despite the xanga lock and all that shows up for their userid is “Great Britain”. Wtf is up with that?
you should make it so you can view your own pics and videos on your own site while you are logged in even if you have enabled the footprints lock……i cant view parts of my own site without turning off my footprints lock

The new features are great, especially for the Friends Lock. And I’ve got 3 suggestions here, 2 of them concerning the friends lock…
I was overjoyed when I knew about Friends Lock, which I have long awaited, and decided to start using the Friends function (I haven’t used Friends before). I invited all my 80 subscribions as my friends, and planned to turn on Friends Lock when ppl accept the invitations. The problem is, after a few weeks, only about 20 of them noticed the invitation and accepted. The others didn’t even know there is a function called “Friends”. Maybe you can add a Subscription Lock, so that only those we subscribe to can visit our site.
Another thing is that, can I customize what ppl see when they are blocked by Friends Lock? Thus I can tell them why I enable the lock, who do I accept as my Friend, or just a sorry message. And I think that Guestbook becomes useful in communication between me and those who I haven’t friended but is actually sb I know. Can you guys allow access to the Guestbook while we have Friends Lock enabled? Or even better – let us select who can visit our Weblog, Multimedia,
Profile, Guestbook seperately? Just like Windows Live Space.
The last thing is about the newest editor (Rich Text – default). I usually use Dreamweaver MX to compose blog posts, and copy the source code to the editor (of course I check the Edit HTML box). But Dreamweaver gengerates space-indented source code, and the xanga editor change these spaces into “ ”. It turns my post into a mess. Can you solve this problem?
And some bad news – a loophole. My friend and I have tried a method to get around the Friends Lock. At first my friend is not subscribed to me and I have enabled Friends Lock. Then my friend subscribed to me without visiting my site (she typed http://www.xanga.com/private/SubscribeTo.aspx?user=kkid1991 into the URL.) And we found that she can view my blog posts in her subscription page. (though she cannot view the comments on the posts) This is really a problem and hope you will fix it soon.

Here’s a good idea I think that could make alot of deals. Copy livejournal and have it so there are 3 options, FREE, BASIC, and PREMIUM. Free does not have any ad’s but has ALOT less features. Basic is ad supported on the websites. Premium is ad free but is $20 a year. I like this feature.
