  • FULL USER BLOCK

    It was a lot of work, but Adam and Mary just finished launching Full User Block!  Now if a blocked user visits
    your site, they will be sent to a page that discreetly says, “Sorry!“  Full User Block currently supports weblogs – and we’ll be adding photos/videos/audio tomorrow.

    We got some great questions about privacy in our last post on blocking:

    • What good is username blocking if users can just sign out and get around the block!  That’s
      where this feature combines nicely with Xanga Lock – you can lock your page so that only Xanga members can check it out.
    • But how will I even know that someone is visiting my site, if they are
      browsing anonymously so as not to leave Footprints!        Great
      question – you can just turn on Footprints Lock, and all users will
      be required to be signed in *and* not browsing anonymously.
    • But what good is a user block, if someone can just access my RSS feed?!  True – so you can turn off your RSS feed here.

    Privacy is hard work, and new loopholes will always emerge.  But
    we’re not going to give up just because it’s tough going!  Now
    that full user block is out, we’ll be working on some site-level
    privacy
    options – as well as some features that should take privacy to the next
    level!

    They set the account to redirect to a page that loads only Google AdSense ads. Then they set a bot to visit xanga accounts logged in as the account above. The visit shows up in the footprints. When you click to find out about your visitor. Your redirected to the ads. Congratulations, you’ve just been Ad raped.

  • Ok, apparently Michelle (HappyDeviant) has been shut down for some kind of cyber crime (child exploitation.)  This is ridiculous because I’m a subscriber of hers for over a year now and she has NEVER posted anything like that before or anything that would warrant the shut down of her site!  I have come across several HORRIBLE sites and yet she is shut off for no reason?!?!  I hope this gets worked out soon!!!

  • good job on this! It’s good to have the various levels of protection – perhaps it would be worthwhile to have a first level of settings that the first time user could set. Something like:

    Let everyone in the world read what I am writing
    Let any xanga user read what I am writing
    Stop a subset of users from reading what I am writing
    Let only a small group of friends read what I am writing
    Don’t let anyone else see what I am writing

    and from that, set the appropriate other settings for the first time user.
    Then, as they want to fine tune things, the other settings can be tweaked to allow this or disallow that…

  • IP blocking only works for people with static IP addresses – and that’s a small number of internet users. most cable users, aol users, etc. use dynamic ip addresses, so blocking ip addresses doesn’t really work in those cases. so, it might work to do with some users and not others.

    Actually, getting sent to the ‘Sorry’ page isn’t discreet at all.  It’s somewhat shocking and rude – but not shocking and rude enough.  How about letting us customize our own ‘Sorry’ pages?!

    If someone has an idea they would like for xanga to consider, how would they go about submitting it?

    I’d love a very simple new feature. On these pages, where one can enter comments, I’d like, as owner of such a page, to have a link to edit the page.

    That way, I can quickly get to enter a tag, correct a fact, add an update, etc.

    Otherwise, I have to fiddle around going to my front page, scrolling to the bottom of the page, selecting a date, then looking through the weblog entries to find the right one and then click the edit.

    It would be so much easier to just click a link on the page – perhaps up there where the “Read or Post comments” links are now – that added Edit. And of course, only the owner of the weblog would be permitted to edit it.

  • I like the idea of getting email updates from people who comment on your posts. But it would be greatly improved if there would be an option to recieve updates from post only after a certain length of time, or maybe just not get updates for comments on your most recent post.

  • That’s a fantastic idea, that Full User Block…but all it takes for someone to get around it is to create a second Xanga account that can be used for “anonymous” browsing of the blocked weblog.

    Any ideas on that loophole?

  • one teensy complaint, tho. xanga users should have the right to not be exposed to objectionable content, correct? at least that seems to be the idea behind the ratings and partly the flagging options. so could xanga not allow slutty ads at the top of every page? i can choose what sites i visit and don’t. i have no choice as to what i see advertised on my own site. which currently includes dorthy and the witch hooker-style for halloween (party city) and some chat thing inviting virtual nast. i know that a lot of people don’t really care, but could you at least consider offering an option where one might choose to have the ads on their page filtered or not? perhaps this isn’t practical or possible, and maybe it won’t happen, but i thought i would at least speak up and suggest we have the choice to not be subjected to suggestive images. thank you.

  • i found that when i locked my xanga,.. people were just signing up with phony usernames like: asdfasdf or lkjdf al and viewing my page…  so even with ful user block.. it doesn’t chang thaat…

  • Hey if you are creating photo-blocking does that include keeping my images from being searcheable on google or at least allowing only people on my protected list to see them, and include blocking people from having access to images that we have deleted from our accounts but still mysteriously show up on google searches??

    I do realize you guys are really busy and all but can you please at least respond to the messages I sent you and let me know what’s going on, if you know how to fix it, or at least delete that one particular image I told you about, from your system??  pretty please???

  • Why dont you just instituite IP blocking. Yes there are ways around that. Yet the average annoyance can’t figure that out. Just keep the IP’s server side, and when we choose to block a person, the option to block the IP should be there.

    With regards to all the people who have problems with people making more than one account, the people going to all this effort obviously really want to read your personal information. I would suggest that people with this *stalker* problem, maybe shouldn’t be blogging. There really is no way to stop people from making than one account…IP address or otherwise, and if they are going to use your site to exploit you, then you might want to consider finding another hobby?

    cause what if that person just uses a different account? thats the problem i hads for a while, someone kept harassing me. id get home from school and one post would have 63400 new comments, all the same words, all from the same person. so id block that account and then thed just use a friends account, or some alt account, or even just a new account that they created to do this!

  • oh yeah, i have a couple more questions to ask. #1. why is it everytime i go to my girlfriends xanga site and i click on the comments, it always freezes up on me. and i have to do the Ctrl, Alt, Delete thing. and #2. when i put a music video or a song on there, on my computer it never plays. but on everbody elses computer it plays. why is that? My computer is kind of slow, i dont know if that is the reason why or not. please comment back. l8a.

  • So far it’s a great asset to have since there’s so many childish people out there who create pages to stalk xangas and also create pages to hate on other people.  Perhaps your team could look into a feature where the members we’re subscribed to can only read our page?  It seems extremely advanced and is a high level of security but there are many of us out there who needs it!  Thank you for the job done so far <3 I agree with Angel42077′s comment.

  • hmm does this block IP addresses? now THAT would be a foolproof USER block.

    i get a LOT of ppl who view my site…Xanga sites with no posts (and it looks like ppl just SIGN up on Xanga in order to view certain ppl’s sites). What ive seen some sites do is that if u have been somewaht inactive (not posting actively within 6 months) then ur acct is deleted (after three emails warning u about this). I know a lot of ppl who are annoyed about weird Xangans just looking at their site (trackable by Footprints)…we ask who they are, and they NEVER respond.

  • there is a problem… my mom and I use xanga to communicate. both of us have the “sign in block” and both of us have “footprints lock”. neither of us have footprints turned on. we’d like to keep it that way to keep the rest of the internet off our personal sites. however, i can’t see her site, and she can’t see mine!

    do you think you could develop a “safe list” so that those of us with tight security can still keep in touch with each other?

  • I don’t know, I feel like when I started a xanga, it was for me to say something to the world, maybe not directly to them, but something that I knew that the world could hear. I understand protecting posts because I’ve done it in the past, but I thought that a blog was something that the world should see. Maybe more people should just pick up diaries or something… But hey, props on getting it all to work, I can only imagine how much work you put in. So thanks for the effort to give xangans what they want : )

  • I have my xanga set to block out non-Xanga members, and yet i found out today that *someone* has been reading them. Since then i’ve had to make all my entries private, and it really annoys me to have to restrict everyone’s access. How is this *someone* able to read my xanga?

    Would I be asking to much to just do an IP ban? I have an old school friend who talks to me through my cbox, she can’t get a xanga. If I use the user block or the “for xanga users only” option, she can’t view the site. Then, I’ve got a user who just bugs me through comments,but if I block ‘em they can just sign out and view the site/use the cbox. You guys are doing great so far though!

  • I would really appreciate it if someone got back to me on how to deal with crazies who create a million screennames with the purpose of harrassing you on your own site. I’ve written to Xanga abuse, as well as to John, and have received no response back. If there is nothing I can do about it, at least let me hear it from some individual. Right now I can’t say I think much of Xanga’s customer service on my site, for which I recently paid good money to upgrade to premium.

  • Well, full user block is good, but it still doesn’t address what happens when someone just keeps signing up with new usernames – I’ve just had one stalker that signed up with a different username 6 times when I blocked his first username…..in the end, I turned on friends lock just to be rid of him.

    However, in my case, I want my blog to be accessible by anybody *apart* from a small subset of people – using a combination of footprint, user & friend blocks achieves this but goes OTT – my blog is now only *available* to a small subset of people.

  • LOL FAIL! All one has to do is logoff and create an alternate account that can be used to view xangas of blocked users. There is no such thing as privacy on the internet. If you don’t want people to read your Xanga then don’t post anything you don’t want scrutinized or don’t post personal stuff on the internet.

  • All of this is pointless as the those people who are not welcome just make a new blog, visit your site and then never use that blogname again.  So that leaves posting only to a protected or friends list which we could have done before the new (well not so new now, but I’m often behind the times) measures.  I don’t see any way round it though.
