  • FOOTPRINTS LOCK BETA

    Today we’re putting Footprints Lock into Beta.  Now thanks to Adam, Dave and Janet,
    you can require anyone viewing your site to be both signed in AND not
    be browsing anonymously.  In other words, all visitors are
    guaranteed to show up in your Footprints .

    Please note: Footprints Lock covers all the pages of your Xanga Site (i.e. your weblog, photos, videos, etc.).  If you
    want to also turn off your syndication feeds or opt out of Xanga’s
    search engines, you can do so here.

    Next up: preventing blocked users from viewing your site, per this recent post. 
    Between Footprints Lock and our upcoming Full User Block, we’re hoping
    to push Xanga’s privacy features forward to the next level.  And
    we have more privacy features in the works too, so stay tuned!

  • This is really getting out of hand. I liked it when Xanga was easy and simple. Now it is so complicated with all of this tracking system. It got to the point where I was afraid to even use Xanga anymore because of comments from people who saw that I was on their page. They would leave me comments and ask me why I didn’t comment on their blog entry. Honestly, it’s really annoying.

  • I’m more interested in why my account is repeatedly locked/frozen for 18 or more hours — often after one attempt to sign in!

    Sometimes it’s even been happening every couple of days, as is the case recently.  I sent explanatory notes.

    The error message says I can try in 30 to 45 minutes, but that’s not what’s happening!

  • I tried using a editing code off the internet to customize my page after my premium expired and now I can’t get back to the part of the editing page that would allow me to change the code! The code changed the control page that lets you make new entries and go to xanga skins etc.

    I am freaking out because I have had xanga for over two years! That’s a lot of writing!

  • That’s good you guys are pushing for strong privacy settings. This reminds me of Facebook’s situation when they open their site to the public. Anyone can join on Facebook now and privacy has been a real issue for everyone. I hope to see the full block user in place!

  • At this time, I probably won’t use this feature. It was helpful for me to read some of the more open entries on Xanga before I started mine. So in a way, I’m returning the favor. But I can also understand why some users would want this.

  • Unless, of course, they use something like megaproxy … In that case, stalk away! 

  • Make it possible to block/redirect via IP Address. You wouldn’t even have to display the IP; you could just click a “block” link somewhere under footprints or something.

    It’d be easy for someone to make a second xanga and use that xanga to view the xanga of someone who blocked them. If you blocked via IP Address, or even MAC Address (though that’d probably be too difficult), then you could probably fix that issue.

  •  This isn’t very convienient for people who use their blogs to keep friends & family updated, which includes a lot of non-xangans. How about making this feature optional? That way if people are bothered by creeps they can turn it on, otherwise it’s open like it is now.

  • if people don’t want others viewing their site then they should not use a xanga or at the least avoid posting private stuff.  & there is the protected posting option anyway. i think this is a total invasion of the viewer’s privacy. next thing you know we’re being watched at every web page we visit.

  • Footprints and removal from search engines is good. The rest is too much.

    I liked it better when there were no footprints though. Getting a tracker from a 3rd party was so much better because only the leet knew about it, and no one was concerned about things like “did I look at too many pages?” and “Should I leave a comment?” Plus they 3rd party trackers were easy to block and I was the only one who knew how to block them. I was completely anonymous and knew everything that went on on my site.

  • If you turn on xanga lock and turn on footprints they go hand in hand at defeating the invisible surfers. It is a good combination to find out who exactly is viewing your site, and when they visited it. It is a good idead to have something like this, and even before this wasn’t invented….I had other xanga trackers that I used to find out who was taking a look at my blog. I am just concerned who views it because I am curious…..is it my enemy that is looking at my information? Is it my best friend? I would never know without Xanga Footprints, so I want to thank the inventors of it….it is a VERY great feature, and you guys are always introducing new and improved things for xanga…it just expands your extremely large number of visitors and users!! Awesome…

  • can we have a footprints-lock-type feature that is specific to only particular posts on our Xanga page? What I would like to see is the ability to make certain posts only readable by Xangans who are signed in – this way, we wouldn’t have to create a specific “protected” list (which in many cases isn’t too pratical). Having this feature have footprints tracking would be good, too.

    After much debate, Xanga staff decided to allow everyone to view the times and dates during which their friends used the restroom. Soon we’ll be able to track the volume and weight of all fluids and liquids discharged.

  • This is awesome, def. keeps my entries safe & well hidden so I know who can see it.
    The only problem I have is that I’m constantly worried about how many times I refresh on my friends pages. That’s a small issue though.

    Unrelated suggestion: Perhaps you could make it easier for people to move through their own Xangas by date instead of having to search through every 5 entries. It makes for easier editing, especially for users who have had accounts for a while, and have a lootttttttt of entries to manuver through.

    Question: Is it possible to block my site from the Google Image search, or prevent my photos from coming up in their searches? I have gone to the Privacy Preferences and submitted NO on the “Search Engines: Allow outside search engines to index my site” category but they still show up. Any help would be most appreciated!!!

  • Only problem that I can see is that if you have your own footprints shut off and you turn the foot print lock on you can’t view any of your own pages besides the home and comments, even signed in.  What about a way to block anybody that isn’t in your friends list?

  • I appreciate you working on security!  I have a freak stalker who set up their Xanga for the sole purpose of stalking me and my sister.  I reported it, but for some reason Xanga didn’t shut down the stalker’s site (as I believe the policy was when I set up my xanga) and it doesn’t seem like Xanga is going to….  So if setting up a Xanga site for the sole purpose of stalking is allowed now, then obviously other security measures are of extreme importance!

    Now how to ban a user from your site????  I tried I-ban-U, but it didn’t work.  My stalker kept showing  up in my footprints anyway.

  • AMRLion states a really good point.  If they don’t make a profile or uses a bogus name….all of this is pointless.  But it does help fight off all of the stalkers dumb enough to use their really info.

  • Considering that I was called a wordy dird for no better reason than browsing someone’s site, I must recommend that others not use this option.  Why?  Because I’m seriously considering browsing anonymously once I figure out how to do such and would greatly enjoy seeing your site and all the naked pictures you see fit to post.  And yes, I’m kidding.  So get over yourself, soxandxso.

    Those Xangans that are apt to leave mean-spirited replies to footprints should definitely consider just making everything protected.  Better yet, how about private?  In fact, why would they not just go back to paper and biro and be done with it?  There are even locking diaries with fancy, floral covers they could use while locked in the lav with the exhaust fan on.

    Nobody around these parts wants to view your site if you’re gonna be all icky about it.  And if someone really wanted to stalk you, they could just get another free username.  Nobody around here or here or here or here can even comment on your site.

    As is probably obvious to anyone that might still be reading this, I’m pi radians from the false-sense-of-security mindset and would really like to see an anonymous comments feature so that the above heres can make comments on Xanga blogs.  I like comments, all comments.  Well, except for mean-spirited responses to my browsing behaviour.  And dissenting opinions, of course.

    But since it does seem like you Xanga staff are doing a great job in trying to appease the masses, I’ll grudgingly give one eProp.

    and that footprints?  basically usless, , , i wanted to check out what was searched for in google to locate me from ukraine i think it was, , , when i clicked on the google thing it went to a page telling me people searching the internet couldnt harm me. , , , that was not the information i was after.

    dont get me wrong, , , footprints keep me intertained, but as far as useful information, , , i cant find much, , , only the country of origin.

  • i don’t like this feature because i prefer to keep footprints turned off, but some of my friends have locked their sites now so if i don’t turn footprints on, i can’t see their pages. i don’t want to turn footprints on just so i can see a few of my friends’ pages. i think this idea of locking the sites is GOOD, but lacking. perhaps there ought to be a loophole where if two users are mutually subscribed, they can see one another’s pages whether or not they have footprints activated? or else maybe xanga classic users should just be able to add an infinite number of users to their protected lists.

    just some thoughts….

  • I am having problems with my footprints. I have enabled the xanga lock on my site so people have to signed in to read my site. My way of knowing who is reading my site. However, there is now some way that they can look at the make up of the site and the html to read my site with out having to be signed in to xanga. It shows up in my footprints as someone from a state California or Idaho and if I click the link that they were looking at, it was the break down of the lay out of the site in html. Please fix this asap!

  • That can be done using the block users script but replacing ‘username’ where it says if(xName == ‘USERNAME’) with the username of whoever you don’t want viewing you site. The only “problem” is that it’s javascript so they can laugh at you by disabling javascript.

    I don’t really see a point in this because they can just get a new username and still view your site until you block that one too.

  • Pleeeeease create an option for us where we can have a list of people who can see our footprints.

    Those of us who’re more comfortable using the anonymous option are now forced to let everyone see our footprints simply because one individual we’re subscribed to is using lock and we want to comment on their entries.

    This would make the footprints lock make more sense, while still letting people have the anonymous option.

  • Ever since Footprints and the evergrowing-snowball-of-crap-options-of-attempting-security that spawned from it, it’s disabled the rest of my HTML that I had that actually WORKED at blocking my “stalkers”. Thanks to this, they’ve all come back to my page. Thanks a lot…. for limiting my choice of security on my own Xanga site and for never responding to any of ur dedicated users’ emails. Nice customer service you got there.

  • And anyone who thinks this is a great feature probably aren’t familiar with people making up user names just to have access into people’s site. I’ve had the same person make up at least 30, literally. Footprints and Xanga lock are crap.

  • I really don’t like the idea of the footprint lock, it is some kind of double standard:

    there is this situation that I activates both xanga and footprint lock, but still browse anonymously. In that way, I could browse others without leaving footprints ( assuming the others did not activate the foorprint lock), while others could not view my site anonymously.

    I really think the footprint lock should go hand in hand with browsing anonmymously, instead of a separate preference.

  • Many, many people use xanga because it’s nothing like myspace (myself included). I think those who want Xanga to be more like myspace should just stick with myspace and stop pestering Xanga’s employees.

    I am very glad for all the protective measures.  I had a myspace for some time and was disturbed by the lack of protection I had. I am grateful for this.

  • Yeah, thanks John. This will negatively affect reading of posts, ultimately. Because I for one, do not wish to participate in the “Footprints” scheme, of Xanga – and will sacrifice subscriptions of users who enforce it. You should simply leave the enforcement off…it’s like flag football. Some people want to play, others just want to sit and watch.

  • Note to someone else’s comment (I’m not reading them all, I just noticed one) – I have Xanga (and non-Xanga) stalkers… and the irony here is that I don’t turn on any of these features (except footprints, which I just left on default, and occasionally glance at and then freak out and then swear not to look anymore…).  The even bigger irony is that I’m waiting for Xanga to become more open to other people- I LOVE Xanga, don’t get me wrong, but one of the reasons I moved my food blogs to Blogger is because I want other people to be able to comment without being a member, to see things without being a member or signed in and all of that good stuff.  To increase the traffic to my page and increase the feedback.  I appreciate that you’re making Xanga a safer place, particularly for our younger members (even though personally who wants to go to a page screaming with colors, moving, flashing things and lots of music that clashes with my own music… but to each his/her own!), but my point is just that- keep up the good work, and this is my personal opinion (which other people may or may not share) about the whole thing.  Thanks again

  • Just curious how focing other people information in footprints in privacy. I can see its privacy for the person with the account but not the person viewing other sites.  I don’t care that I’m being logged but I’m sure some of us here don’t want to be.  Thats why I though users had the browse anonymously option, to keep their viewing private and protected.  Wouldn’t it work better to blocked an IP address rather than a profile, then unwanted/blocked people could never view your page.

  • No, I can’t say I’m impressed.  I’ve turned my Footprints off, not because I want to be anonymous, but because I don’t really care about viewing my own footprints.  In all honestly, it’s not my business to know who visits my site.  Hit counters give a general idea, but I really don’t care about the specific accounts.

    So when you put in Footprint Lock, I was dismayed.  Not because I can no longer surf Xanga- I can’t comment my friends.

    A few of my friends have put up the F-Lock, and I can no longer access their site to leave comments on their posts.  Shouldn’t a mutual subscription override a privacy measure?  If they didn’t want me on their site, why would they be subscribed to me, and allow me to be subscribed to them?  Keeping out random people is one thing, but keeping out subscribers is entirely different, and rather stupid.

Since you can basically lock down your site completely. -_- I dont like this foot print thing, and now im going to have to look into modifing my header to fake foot print, if thats possiable, ill just have to do some looking.

  • This certainly does not increase privacy. It increases paranoia. If you really want privacy, add a real protected posting system like Livejournal does! The protected posts feed is too out-of-the-way to be much use. Really, your privacy system needs to be much more fine-grained. I want to block (or politely shoo; that works well enough) search engines without locking out everyone else.

    You know, Facebook had a full-out revolt when they added even the slightest privacy-intrusive tracking (technically you could do the same thing yourself if you were really bored), and this goes beyond that in a different way. I guess the people here only value their own privacy, and nobody else’s.

  • I think there’s something faulty with the footprints lately, especially this week. The numbers keep changing everytime I look at my feedback log. On Wednesday it said I have 57 for the week, but an hour later it said I have only 48. And then when it says I have 20 in one day, the footprints only show 8 footprints in the “Today”. Then, on Friday, it said I have 0 for the week…

    What’s going on?

  • Something is really weird. I went to check my footprints and it showed 141 for the week. And then it had “United States” like two dozen times in a row.   • Personally, I think this is a little ridiculous. You can’t xanga surf anymore clicking link to link. If someone is that paranoid about their site to the point where they need to know who is visiting their site all the time, they should be on a different network, with different blog rings, commenting only on sites that are locked.

  • Hi, John. My site — FiNGERPAiNT_LAYS — has been frozen over almost 2 hours & it says, sorry, incorrect login . And i`m typing it slowing & i`m doing it right. Do you know by any chance to make it UNfrozen because it does say 30-45 minutes & it`s been over an 1 & a half already or unless SOMEONE like a hacker changed my password, which i doubt.   • There are too many comments here for me to try to find the answer to my question…my footprint shows a total of more visits then the day by day added together adds up to.  Who are the other visitors?  Are they my visits to my site or something secret?  I have a stalker and I want to make sure they haven’t found some way around…

  • Hi there.  I recently activated the Footprints lock because someone was rifling through my site via one of the search engines (google, yahoo, etc).  I just really wanted to know who was doing this.  But now even though I have this in place my footprints log shows alot of weekly footprints, but few that show up with names.  How can this be? Are people still hitting my site anonymously? Or are these extra footprints from when I log in? Is there any way to trace the footprints? Maybe I just don’t understand the system.  Pls contact me so I can understand.  Thanks!

    but what really ticks me off is that the feedback log says that in the past week ive had “x” amount of footprints…
    and then when i go to view the footprints… and look through the “today” “yesterday” “2 days ago” etc… and i can not find those “x” amount of footprints just becuase it was more than “4 days ago”.
    if the log says ive had “x” footprints over the past week… i should be able to view them.
    i hope you consider my suggestion.
