Today we are launching Ratings for individual Posts.
Some of you asked earlier if an occasionally racy post would force you to raise your overall Site rating. Now that we have Post Ratings in place, the answer is no!
Quick example: say your site is rated C (or lower), and you want to write a one-off D post. Just use the new post-level rating to rate that one post “D”. When we display your post, we’ll just check both your Site and your Post Rating, and use whichever is higher. (Rating posts is totally optional - in fact, if you are using Post Ratings a lot, you might want to just raise your Site Rating).
Personally speaking, I feel much more comfortable with the current direction of Ratings. In the past, if someone reported content that might not be appropriate for all ages, we had to decide whether or not to shut it down. Now with Ratings, we have another option. It's a great feeling not to have to censor our users... I hope you guys feel the same way.
Next up, we'll launch an alternative age verification scheme... and then we'll preview a cross-ratings system. We'll keep you posted. In the meantime, please check out Mary's designs and Patrick's programming by clicking on New Weblog Entry from your private site!

What I'm curious about is the exact motivation of the so recent additions to Xanga.
However, I do see the utility in this, although not the cause. Is it because of complaints from parents? It seems that with the rise of blogs and places like MySpace, parents have gotten all too concerned. A good portion of the time, they're just eating away their time on the computer by posting things that only their friends would even barely give a hell about. And then . . . things become unecessarily tangled and silly. So, that shouldn't matter as much as it does to me.
Censorship, also, would have come to be a problem in one way or another, and so I believe that this was beneficial, but not so much that I sighed with relief or gasped with joy at the news of it.
Anywho.
It's still quite the peachiness that you've been working to make Xanga safer, and more convienient.
Though, what's to happen to reviews and events? They seem to have almost completely disappeared in one way or another. So erm.

How about some way to differentiate between 40 hits a day from one or two 'states' or countries, so one knows if it's one person hitting you 40 times a day or 40 people who make one visit each. That might make some of the 'footprint paranoia' better...since we have NO way to know what is actually happening with the footprints as they are. IE Va 1 Va 2 Va 3 instead of just 3 hits apparently from Va...and we assume whatever from that sparse info.
ALSO, I thought that the Xanga lock was supposed to prevent the search engines from 'finding' your pages. Well, I'm getting hits from Google searches that track my images from Flickr to here. If the 'lock' is working to block search engines, why would my images track to here at all, but instead pull simply from Flickr?

It'd be neat to have a separate Xanga area for people 25 and older or something like that, or another for 40 and older. I have to weed through a lot of teenagers' blogrings when looking for one to join.

Too much work. I will keep all my posts rated "G" or I guess on the Xanga system, "a"="G".
This is good, because I almost always write "a" rated news stories (although some of the current government's acts taking away our freedoms and spying on us etc are more obscene than pornography). But it's good to have the option to go up a rating for just one story, like when I wrote about the "World Naked Bicycle Race".

What I have to say is more of a question... I know I should fill out the question form thing but whenever I fill it out I never get a reply.
My question/concern is that I'm going to be 18 next Monday (that's also my three year xangaersary). Does that mean for 5 days I can't go on to some ones xanga that has an EX content... 'cause I'm not offended by it in the least. I know by the time the comment get a reply (if ever) my it'll most likely be void, but I was just wondering.

You guys are doing an awesome job at updating xanga! The ratings are great! I have a request, though. On myspace (yes, I used the 'm' word) you can have only your selected friends view your posts. Right now, all I can do is set my posts to public or private. Will we ever get an option for preferred friends?

moniet commented waaaaay up there and i think he/she has a point. I get like twenty or more hits from californians every day and I have no clue whether its the same one or different ones. Maybe including an ip address with the footprints would help us know whether or not we all have stalkers from California, or if Californians just happen to be curious people and go around searching blogs. (I'm not being biased against Californians or anything but I seriously do get a ton of hits from them)

Hope you've got that alternative age verification setup going into action FAST - I (along w/ MANY others) do not have a CC nor are planning on bending over for one, since their service charges/interest/terms are atrocious and they encourage irresponsible behaviour; the last thing the world needs is yet another reason to legitimize the bloody things.

Discretion advised
Explicit
If it were up to me, Xanga wouldn't allow the explicit content, but then again, I'm just a humble Xanga poster...

Xanga used to be simple. Now, it's becoming needlessly complicated. There are too many unnecessary features and paranoid people.
All this new stuff is becoming annoying. The constant addition of new features used to be a good thing. But things like this don't really benefit any of the users.
so, if u don't rate a post does that mean any1 can c it if u didn't rate ur site? in that case, how is not rateing differenet then just rateing an "a"? and if ur site is rated higher than 1 or 2 postings then an u make it so u can see those few postings?

On the left side of my private site, a feedback log just appeared. It tells me all the comments, eprops, etc.,that I've gotten for the week. I don't want this there. How do I get rid of it?

Just wondering why that happens.... You can sign in as me and check it out...... I don't think it's a buggie thing so much as a danged overload on the flagman.....

What's with not supporting Netscape anymore? I still use that, have always used it, and prefer it far more than other browsers. Xanga tells me to upgrade my Netscape when I try to post a picture, but I am already using 8.1 (the most recent version!).
Oh, and nah... I don't think I'll have any use for this ratings system. My site is also almost always "A" anyway.

well its not always good....some people cant visit their friend site cuz they rated it a rating. also some may not rate it right. how you gonna prevent that?also people lie about their age in profiles they make.its not that hard. i dont do it but i know some people who do. people or little kids more likely can get by this stuff. but it may help some.

Interesting Concept! BTW... Could someone from the Xanga team please post instructions on how to activate the Reviews and Events links (make them public) in the Reviews and Events section of Xanga help? Only instructions there now is how to add or delete a post to either link. I believe there was an update post awhile back that had the instructions, but it can't be found now. FYI... I tried sending 'contact us' form post to xanga team in the Reviews and Events category about this and the error msg comes up or a page not found screen appears upon sending. Pete

I think ratings are a great idea. However, as an underage user, the 18+ restriction is driving me nuts! I think each user should be able to decide what level of content they wish to view based on their personal preference, not their age.

I don't know if they're a registration manager or not, but by the looks of their site, I don't think so. They've left me comments saying that I was doing illegal and inappropriate things, yet I wasn't. And they say that they'll shut down anyone's site who jocks things, etc. I'll tell you what's really going on:
I make layouts here on Xanga, and I have over 1,000 subscribers who know that my layouts are made 100% by me. But for the past several months, I've been getting jocked, despite the fact that I have a code on my site that disables right-clicking and hi-lighting. I believe they're going under View, Source in the browser window. Is there any way to turn that off on here? And is there a way to block certain users from seeing your site altogether instead of just certain posts?
I was also accused by this registration manager of making hatred sites. I didn't start any hatred sites. In fact, cherry_cherry_cola is the one who did. I have proof of that. If you don't believe me, look at these sites that were shut down for hating me:

Also, the owners of the sitse cherry_cherry_cola and Ilovesccr18 are the REAL jockers. Not to mention they also called me a slut and bitch on this site:

Hey, when I tried to set mine so that I could view all posts and I went to save it didn't save... it gave me some pop up about how it was going to an insecure page or whatever and when I clicked "yes" to continue to it anyway it still didn't save... so I'm a little confused, lol. Personally writing however, who's 2 say what one user's site rating site is or should be and how it should be rated over another users site [...] one religion over another is offensive 2 some [...] one lifestyle over another user might be offensive to someone else? And then try combining the two and look out, both sides of the fence there start hating. So far, everything I've seen written here in Xanga is an (A) by my standards of living and understanding, while whoever creates this system of explicit content or (ex), I have yet seen on any users site and anywhere else besides other users and non-users searches found in my footprints.
For myself, other users that just defines themselves in words as a he or she in there daily postings is already rated an (ex) in my minds eye and I know that's not the same feeling for the populace here and shouldn’t be [...] however, if I had the choice of reading all peoples sites when I was younger, outside of what the church raised me up 2 believe and before I went out into the real world, regardless of what someone thinks is right or wrong for me 2 read, then I might have stopped making some stupid choices in my life a lot sooner and would have found help a lot quicker.
This is why I’m here now, because there are other’s like me out there and by reading ways 2 improve my life, through reading how other users improved theirs, then I can learn that we’re all just a little crazy [...] but there is hope!

Site ratings are horrible. Now I can't view some of my friend's sites without giving out my credit card information (!) and even after I did this, I still wasn't able to view their sites. This is absurd. What the hell happened with you guys on this one?

I think it is a good idea. However, I don't know how it will help. People will always find a reason to be offended.

I like the concept, however, the age verification system is really useless. I'm sorry. I'm 18, but I have no intentions of getting a credit card, and I won't be for some time. I think it's not proper to use that as a form of verification, either. People will lie, reguardless. It's never going to change. I don't know what else you guys can do, use drivers liscense' or something...no idea... but the credit card stuff is not going to work.
I disagree with all these 'making it safe' actions. What you are doing is backdoor censorship; and you're giving tools to bowdlerize to strangers with unknown agendas. If children are logging on and reading adult entries, that is the responsibility of the parents to monitor and allow/disallow such activity. This responsibility is not yours, not mine. I have met intelligent, thoughtful teens and adults alike here and what you are doing is stirring the pot for no good reason and destroying the heterogeneity of this community.

There was one rating you missed!!!!! I wrote a post today on removing b*dy hair from d*licate places and had to write a title: MEN SHOULD NOT READ THIS. Now why couldn't there have been a rating for that too... you have everything else covered! (Also why did so many men come to my site, is it the wet paint thing? You have to touch it?)
Are posts and blogs with X-ratings going to become more desirable? There is a way to test this: if you build into the search engine a search for (drop-down list) only a/b/c/ex-rated blogs, you could see if the ratings were working to keep kiddies "safe" or if it was just providing a faster route to xanga-porn. Which I hardly ever see. I wonder why?

Personally though, I think Xanga should be kept PG-13, plain and simple. There are places for kids under 13, and there are places for people to post nudie pictures. Xanga should be neither. Nothing obscene (strong D or Ex-rated) should be posted, and if a kid under 13 reads someone's blog and sees something PG-13, that's not anyone's fault but theirs-use at your own risk.
Why should we mess with all this ratings stuff in the first place?
And also, where do you see what someone has rated their site?

i don't understand something. we can rate our posts, our site, but when we want to see someones page who has theirs explicit we have to enter a credit card number. i can see this if you have not paid for xanga, but i pay for mine, obviously i am over 18. am i just too paranoid? i don't like putting in my card number thus the reason for paypal... i dunno.. i'm silly i guess.
Can someone PLEASE fix the list of 5 people on Featured Content on the main xanga page? I've been stuck on there for 2 days and while most people would love the attention showering of eprops, the traffic to my site is slowing down my tracker and I don't like the mass visits.

Well, that is completely inaccurate. I mean I post things constantly, and few people comment on it. This is because, in my opinion, they are waaay more interested in the secular world, and not in things of God. Why, I don't know-because to me this world has nothing to offer.

Does this affect the HTML of a site? When, for that short period of time, the feedback log was displayed on the home site a few of the codes (such as subscriptions toolbar and dimmed entries) stopped working. They went back to working as soon as the feedback log disappeared. BUT they're gone again, shortly after your ratings announcement. Coincidence, anyone?
You are probably aware of this, and someone else may have even commented on it, but I'm not going to sift through hundreds of other comments ... Anyhow, setting an individual post to "ex" does not keep a reader who sets his or her viewable content rating at "D" (or lower) from reading the post on the subscription page.
My example: My viewable content is set at "D". While browsing my subscriptions, I read a post written by a friend of mine. It didn't have explicit content. I clicked on the entry so that I could leave a comment, but was unable to do so because, for whatever reason, she chose to set the rating at "EX". If I'd wanted, I could have clicked on the pictures from my subscription page to see them, so nothing in the post was unviewable to me except for going to the page itself.
This, to me, makes the individual post rating system rather, ummm, worthless.
Rate me first, then I will join.

Well, I couldn't because the link that you click wasn't there, because they had a personal layout that they put up that eliminates the link. I was wondering if there is a place I can go to report her site to since I can't flag it, unless....there's another way to get it flagged. Oh and same goes for rating a site. Why are you taking up responsibilities that aren't your own? Parents should be keeping their kids off "offensive" sites if they're so concerned about it... it's their job to control what their kids look at on the web, not yours.

As a Premium user, I would like the ability to Protect my entries to specific people. After implementation I would be able to select, "User Specific Protection." Then I would pick the users from my friends list that I would like to allow access to. This could work in reverse as well. Selecting users that I do not want to see it. I feel this feature would have more utility than the current and generic protected posting.

Talking of footprint paranoia, wow, what a blow out!
Someone got so het up about this she mentioned one person from Germany who kept visiting her blog and not commenting. 'Who the heck are you?' she wailed. She SEEMED to indicate from the rest of her post that she was worried about the country someone came from. Now, that is NOT what she meant, but it sure came over that way.
So, the aforementioned German visitor (who I happen to know) was upset, and if one takes a moment to THINK, one can see why, with the possibility of antisemitism and other cultural difficulties being prevalent.
The episode ended unhappily, with husband of poster telling poster her relationship with me (?) was damaging to poster, and thus ended a short friendship. Poster did not apologise nor fully realise how belittling her possibly racist comments were, she blamed the German person for misunderstanding. And the whole situation came about because visitors were regarded as stalkers, who proved it by not commenting, but only reading.
The Footprints idea is not really a very useful or helpful one.

This would be a great idea if it actually worked... I keep getting "We could not verify your age. Your credit card information is not valid." whenever I put any of my card's info into the system. Is this going to be corrected? I'm sure i'm not the only one with this problem.

I have emailed the xanga "help" email team four times in regards to an ongoing problem with not only my site, but several others. In order to see protected posts, subscribers have to choose the "protected" tab from their subscriptions page. They are unable to see protected posts when they go straight to my xanga, even though they are logged in.
Also, I am getting complaints from Firefox users that they cannot leave comments on my site. I'm assuming it's because of the browser, because each of the people who noted it to me were using Firefox.
Finally, I'm a little curious as to why there is never any response/action from the xanga team. Normally, customer service is, well, for...customers. There is no doubt in my mind that if the link for the Classmates.com, Verizon, or Snapple contest ads was not working, the problem would be repaired almost immediately. Is it an issue of the monetary amount lowly premium subscribers are paying for the service? Is the only way to get service, hypothetically, through xanga, to be an advertiser? Is there a reason why there is not even a form email that is sent in response to a request for assistance, that lets me as a user know that the issue is being looked into? Shouldn't there be some kind of follow up from a customer service team? Granted, I realize you are working hard on ratings, footprints, flag system, and other new features, but doesn't it seem as if you would fix a problem like the protected posting (because as I said, I'm certainly not the only one) first, or at least in the meantime?

I don't understand why people want the Xanga lock feature - why not join a discussion group or forum if they only want to let certain people see their stuff - why not just use the protected posts feature? Why make such a fuss? If you don't want people to see what you are writing on the net don't post it! Email it around or use the protected posts?
I can understand the rating feature for people who want their children to have a xanga but don't want them to see explicit content but I think your verification system is very very annoying. There are a lot of adults all over the world that don't use credit cards (because they don't want to get into debt) and if they want to read something explicit, cannot use your verification system because they don't have a credit card. You need to come up with something else and fast because I forsee a lot of disgruntled people. It's very annoying when I post something and I can't see it when I turn up at my site again even if I have the "remember me" option on just because I rated it D instead of C because I didn't think kids should be able to see it. I understand it's a work in progress but I don't think you have thought of all the consequences of such a system and it seems like you are working with blinkers on in certain situations.
This really needs to be thought out more carefully:
If I don't have a credit card, I can't get verified whether I want to or not.
If I can't get verified I can't see explicit posts.
I can rate a post explicit but I cannot see it to edit it.
Therefore I may as well not rate it explicit even if the content is explicit.
If I have an explicit post that's not rated as such on my site, any kid could turn up and see it.
This then means that your entire system has failed in it's purpose and you cannot blame me for it, because your verification system does not take everyone into account.

Since the courts already approve this, let's go the whole nine yards and add this to another attack on free speech. Did anyone ever consider placing the computer in a public area of the home? I've been a member of this community since February of 2002, but now I can't even check on an old friend (from pre-Xanga days) because she has rated her site EX. I don't have a credit card... Yes, there are actually adults in this world who choose not to be burdened with credit card debt.
Though I guess I don't really have the right to complain, since I am no longer a premium member.
Ratings is a bad idea, but not as bad as the flags. Censorship is wrong, especially on something as built upon freedom as the internet. Can we stop with the useless features, please? How about allowing everyone to join more blogrings, or maybe a higher number of people can be added onto a protected post list?

hi john. i want my xanga site to be famous. im feeling a bit starved for attention today. ive been reading popular sites and they are all pretty much crap that i have seen so far. mine is crap too i guess, but, if it is then i guess it is just as deserving of heaps of comments and props. so heap away.
why not create a comment box that allows non Xangians to comment? I realize through the new feedback log feature that many viewers from around the world have been accessing my site through searches.
If the idea not to allow nonXangians to comment is to encourage them to sign on, why not give them a preview on it by letting them comment. I get it all the time from people that they don't want to sign on to Xanga because it's basically only for Xanga's community to interact with.
Can i suggest a proposal to widen viewership and membership? I think it'd be a good marketing tool too, in order to bring some Bloggers from other sites, like BlogSpot, which isn't that userfriendly but allows universal commenting.

This "age verification" thing is horrible!
Some of us are 18 (and even a few years older) and *don't* own credit cards, ya know...
So then there are limits because of a lack of credit?
Plus, there are people under 18 with credit cards, or have parents let them use their credit cards on online forms whenever they want.

I can't find a way to complain in any other venue, so here goes...
We have to give our credit card number in order to change the veiwer discretion to the highest level and I think that is F**ked up.
You need to change this, seriously. I don't have a credit card and I will never get one! Even if I had one, I wouldn't just give it out to sites, not even yours. No offence. Credit card numbers are pretty private, I would think. I know I'm not the only one who can't stand that part of the feature. So change it! Or you're going to get a lot more complaints. I'm sure there's some other way you can verify age and identity.

Recently I had to change the password because I thought someone was tampering with it, and now that I changed it, sometimes it is odd to sign in.

since you're tweaking the ratings thing, why not make it that things that are high rated can't be received in email and that we can put people that we know in for high rated posts/blog site so that when THOSE people (like our current subscribers) try to look at our sites they don't get the credit card verification screen. That way, it only affects new readers (ie. the cc verification) and not people who have been subbed to us for years. If new readers want to be screened for age in order to be able to see rated material then they can be age verified.

Not related to ratings but I didn't know how to say this - did you know that more than 50% of the time I log onto my xanga, I get an advert about protecting my computer from viruses. It's a pop up and a lot of the time it actually REPLACES my xanga and I have to close my browser and try all over again. It's REALLY frustrating. Is that some deal that xanga did or something?

un-related: is there anything in the works for us to have the ability for people without a xanga account to post comments on our blogs? I understand the whole "we want everybody to do xanga" philosophy and how preventing non members permission to post comments "aids" in that... but I also think it's one of the most ghetto things that some blog sites do. i was just thinking about something.
what you should do is have it where everyones profile is private(you could give them a choice of having a private or un-private profile) and a person could only view the profile unless they subscribed.
i dont know, it would probably be a big help with safety issues and such. because you can make it where you can unsubscribe a person and things, so if you have some scary wack-o then they can't view your profile and bug you.
it'd probably also be a big help to all those layout, icons, music, ect. sites. so no one can steal their things that easily.

Matters of principle, even of the smallest sort, set teh precedent for all future encounters. If I don't make astand on this now, It'll come back and bite me later. Please consider deleting accounts of this sort.
My account was hacked into by "Hairyblackbeetch". She has nude pictures of me that she has already posted on my Myspace (after hacking into that also). I've closed my Myspace and I changed my password on Xanga and tried to close my account (I'm a paying premium user). When I go through the account shut down process and type my password at the end it says it's wrong, no matter how many times I change it. I went to the help page and checked all of that and nothing worked. I don't know what she's done, but it's keeping me from closing my account. My Xanga username is "S0methingS0Secret" should you need it for anything.
I'd also like to add that I've sent numerous emails in the past about the same user harrassing me (and many of my friends also). I didn't get a reply and nothing was done about it. I am not impressed with the lack of concern Xanga has for the safety of its users.

Hey, I'm not sure if you're in charge of this section of Xanga, but since Xanga Team doesn't have a link for customer service or complaints/comments, I was hoping you could get this message to whomever in charge of photos. Thank you.
"I'm a lifetime premium member, and I really don't care for all the new bells and whistles that have been added to xanga, especially since it's really compromised the integrity of something as simple as showing photos. Is somebody on that? My pictures aren't showing, and those that do take forever to download and show. My connection is lightning fast and my photos aren't big. I'd like to know that Xanga isn't selling out their real supporters just so they can compete with the myspace revolution. Please get someone on this problem. Thanks."
Hey, I think you should know that for quite some time, the Currently Watching thing that you can put on your site has not been working. No matter what you type in, it just shows a little box with a red X in it when you go to Currently Watching and shows no results. But the same thing you type in shows things in other categories. Can the Xanga staff please fix that? Thanks!!!
