  • USERNAME FOOTPRINTS

    Today at 3 pm EST, Username Footprints will go live! Here’s how Footprints will work. If your visitor is:

    • Not Signed In: you’ll see their Country or State (as before)
    • Signed In and Not Participating: you’ll see their Country or State (same as above)
    • Signed In and Participating in Footprints: you’ll see their username

    We’ve been reluctant to embrace the world of trackers, out of privacy
    concerns. It wasn’t until November of 2005 that we even changed
    our JavaScript policy to officially allow them. But trackers have
    exploded in popularity… so if they’re going to be around, we want to
    make sure they address our privacy concerns. So we’re not showing IP’s,
    we won’t reveal your location if you leave a username footprint and you
    can easily opt-out (as announced several days ago).

    Back to Location Footprints: Mary, Dave,
    and I have been amazed by the overwhelmingly positive feedback so
    far! We did make a few tweaks: improving the accuracy of location
    tracking, adding in Canadian Provinces, and
    taking out your own footprints (based on overwhelming feedback).

  • Hello lvirden! We want to be especially sensitive to privacy concerns, so we’re not displaying any username footprints before our launch (that’s why we also gave a few days head’s up on the opt-out). Sorry for the inconvenience

  • I’ve got nothing to hide, so it really doesn’t bother me that xanga has decided to set up a tracking system. Being able to have an idea of the general readership of a blog is a good thing, and we can always elect to use the java trackers to find out more, such as the IPs of those who harass us, in addition to the footprint service you are providing. I say Cool!

  • John, I understand about the privacy thing; I had just figured that the current code could apply against the database of older info. But that’s fine.

    Okay, next question – if you don’t mind …

    If the new footprint code is working right, I’m seeing a lot of hits in my footprints which seem like they were all coming from a search of the string “icon”. I don’t mean one or two or even 10 – I’m seeing about 30 an hour for the past 2 hours. It’s really weird – I don’t do much of anything with icons, so the fact that these dozens of people are coming through my site from such a search seems… inconceivable.

    Also, does footprints only cover weblogs, or also photoblogs and profiles as well?

  • I’ve done some more checking. The code appears right. BUT, there appears to be something weird going on out on the net. Because as I said earlier, it’s almost like there’s a set of zombie computers out there hammering xanga with the search http://search.xanga.com/searchxanga.aspx?q=icons and then, from there, arriving at least at my site… maybe others.

    I see at least 15 IP addresses all with the same search term and then going to my page.
    I’ve never seen this pattern in over 6 months of usage tracking…

  • All i see is Footprints: and a number for today and the week.. (34, 143) but it keeps saying “It looks like you don’t have any Footprints at this time – Just keep writing new entries, leaving comments on other sites, and participating in the Xanga Community – eventually you’ll start getting some footprints! ”
    Is there something wrong there? Or am i not looking in the right place?

  • I tend to wonder why I am having hits every 15-30 minutes on RSS feeds, for several days now, round the clock. Checking for feeds which I have disabled…almost all are from Va or California. Since the feeds are supposedly blocked, who would keep checking every 15 minutes for days on end? Is it possible that there is a bypass for rss blocked feeds??

  • oh man! you have no idea how insane I find the idea of trackers. I don’t get it really…whats so cool about tracking back as to who’s reading ur page? I mean , if you are so self-conscious/ insecure then why do you need to publish ur thoughts on  the internet in the first place?! Its ridiculous really. I am sorry but thats my honest opinion…

    Anyways, you guys at Xanga have worked pretty hard at making it the way it is …( *sigh* )….so yeah, KUDOS TO YOU FELLAS. :)

  • All these new changes are great, but the one change that would fix a lot of problems would be private commenting. If you want to say something to the other Xanga owner, but not to the rest of the world, I think the option should be available. Just my humble opinion.

  • I’m not seeing usernames yet, and I keep getting footprints from esp. California all the time, and some are listed as “RSS.” So I’m not sure why usernames aren’t working, and I don’t know what an RSS is. ??? But thanks for everything! I love my Xanga! :)

  • as long as the visitor is signed in, you should be able to see their username. this is standard of all third-party trackers. i’d like to get rid of my tracker, but if this function is not implemented, i have no reason to use the less-capable footprints.

    IP viewing and matching (for username identification) would be nice, too.

    Can you please take my island off your database and just have it come up “Caribbean” – my island identifies me absolutely just as much as if you published my phone no. My isp is common to a lot of islands anyway.  I really cherish my online anonymity and would like it back on Xanga.

  • Since your Footprints launched, I’ve been getting a lot of hits from referer http://blo.gs/ping.php, as well as a burgeoning readership in California and Virginia, similar to what others are reporting.

    This makes me wonder…have you set up Xanga feeds to automatically ping any blog finder services? I think that those of us who know what pinging is and want to do so are perfectly capable of doing it ourselves. Although, I’ve got to admit that it would be awesome to see you guys post about pining and then read 600 illiterate responses to it.

    On a side note, I finally realized last night what’s been troubling me about the new “Dash.” I’ve been using it for some time, and although I generally only leave four or five comments a week, I like to be able to find them easily, if only to remind myself that I actually did comment. There’s no way to get to a list of my own comments from the Dash like there was from the old Private Xanga. Pretty please…may we have it back?

    Other changes to the Dash that I’d suggest would be moving the Photo Manager section to the left, as the right side of the screen is already pretty link heavy, and also 1) enabling a drop-down box from the Subs and the Profile menus on the top left, as it’s currently impossible to tell who has updated from the Dash, or 2) maybe having the reading window for these two links be incorporated into the Dash the way the Blogrings and Settings sections are. Having the subs and profile links open in a new window is really annoying.

    Of course, I’m keeping the other 4 trackers I have on my site. I like knowing the IP address and that every name is shown whether the person wants to or not. If you’re gonna stop by, I’d at least like to know who you are. (it’s like online caller id…but not).

    count me among the ones who are not fans of the whole online tracking thing. (if i know people track i tend not to browse those sites. not a fan of being watched, time, ip etc.) i understand their privacy concerns, though, so i just don’t read. though, i suspect it’s more ego concerns regarding how many people visit etc.

  • Is there a way from blocking people from reading my site? There’s some person in California that gets locked out of my home page at least five times a day, but sometimes the link reads “/rss.aspx?user=slammie” and they can read my posts that way.   • I’m still getting the rss feeds to Virginia even though I disabled it. Is it not working? And I locked my site but still getting hits from District of Columbia. Also, if my site is locked why are usernames still not showing? It seems to me if it’s locked they would have to sign in to view my site, and then footprints should be showing their usernames. It shows one every now and then, but not all the time.

    This thing has really made me paranoid. I’ve never cared for anyone seeing my site, xangan or not, and it’s always been public, until now. And I still don’t care who reads it. But now I’m paranoid about government spying, as we all know they were caught doing. Is the government spying on our blogs? I don’t know why they’d be interested, but just looks funny to me so many of us are getting these feeds to Virginia and hits from DC.

    You were right all along about the trackers…they’re no good. I’m sure in some instances they’d be useful, if you were being harassed by someone. But in general, it’s just made me paranoid.

    Please try to figure out what is going on with the feeds, Virgina, and DC.

  • There’s a bug regarding the counter in the Feedback Log’s table on the left side of the page. It will continually switch back and forth from including your hits to your own site and not including them.

    E.g. it will show 21 footprints when I look at the Log, but when I click Footprints, the count reverts to 11, which is the actual number of other people that have hit my site. If I click Footprints again, it switches back to 21. Click again, it switches to 11. You get the idea.

  • This new feature is really confusing. I have absolutely no clue on how it’s supposed to work. Personally, I find this and the Xanga Lock feature getting me freaked out a bit on the whole privacy issue. I guess by “Referrer,” it means the person who was checking out my page? But somehow, and I don’t know if it’s because it’s glitchy, but there was either one person or two from California who visited my site and there was no link pinpointing who exactly they are below the Referrer line. I only have two people from my list from that state; no one else. I don’t know anyone else! It is a bit scary, especially if I have Xanga Lock enabled already (even though it’s still showing up still on places like Google; which is stupid already as is because you guys have mentioned our site will not show up on search engines anymore?).

  • Yes, it’s all fine and dandy, but I, along with a few others, are concerned with ninjas.  You see, if a ninja is quiet enough to go around killing government officials and then slipping into the darkness, suddenly disappearing, then how do you know that your xanga tracker will catch THEM?  I think this problem needs to be formally addressed on the front page of Xanga, so that us concerned citizens may be further noticed about Xanga’s security.  That is all for today.

  • I’ve been playing around with this and can’t come up with anything conclusive, but it seems as though when I’m logged in and I click around on my own site, it lists me as “California,” but it doesn’t seem to do it consistantly. I’m officially baffled. I’m pretty sure I don’t know anyone in California.

  • Well, about 3pm today, the constant hits from the icons search seems to have gone from dozens an hour to almost completely gone. I am seeing a few regular hits, from California, that almost look like someone is polling, looking at my reviews.

    What browser is not leaving a Referrer footprint? I’m seeing quite a lot of those…

  • Do people signing on simply to leave racist/offensive/stalker comments violate your terms of service?  I think we should be able to flag such people.  I found one today who has no content on their site, but have clearly been posting on people’s sites to leave those types of messages, so I flagged it as a hatred site anyway and left a guestbook note as to why.

    Alternatively, if you won’t kick such a person out, can you allow blockage of specific commentors? One person was the victim of some 6 or 7 digusting comments for one entry (requesting that the nastiness stop).

  • I think this is great but the footprints on my xanga are a bit wonky>> I’d blame it on the time difference and different countries (I live in Hong Kong) but it’s way too off and I thought xangas follow the times that their users set them…. but some of my footprints have people visiting my site and an entry I wrote today, yesterday.  Which is weird, because logically it wasn’t written at that time. Others footprints are even set all in am when it’s clearly the afternoon here.

    erm…..help?

    I have given up anonimity in my xanga a long time ago. I’m suffering from overload of these “social games” anyways and I’m not sure I really want to know who is reading what I write. The temptation is there, and very strong, but I’m more afraid that I would lose my ease in expressing myself; I would become more self-conscious instead of exploring my ideas freely.

    I don’t care if people track me, in particular I don’t care if they are being paranoid and think that I’m stalking them. Let them stalk me if they wish.

    But do let me say I really appreciate all the work you guys have done on xanga, making it so friendly and responsive to xangan’s needs. If people want to see footprints, in my opinion they shouldn’t hide their own. If I have the choice, I would probably let others see my footprints, while disabling the tracking function on my own site so I don’t see who has visited me. I think that would be best for me.

The only difference is they can only read your posts, but not see images or anything…i know how they do it, but i’d rather not post it where anyone can see on here. i know, me not tellling you HOW they’re getting through cant help you to fix it, but i thought i would let it be common knowledge

    You have some bad mark up on everyone’s personal Xanga when you are referring us to your site concerning footprints. Just thought you might want to know.

    About the footprints, i think this is a step in the right direction, but I wished we had IP addresses to go with them even for people who aren’t logged in. Basically, I’m saying that if you can provide the full functionality of Xanga Tracker the footprint feature will be lacking and therefore usless and slightly redundant to me.

    Again, just thought I’d pass the word.

  • This is pretty awesome, a great idea, but my xanga is showing my own footprints still…of course, it says i’m from california for some reason, which is also weird. But i was testing it, and unless there’s someone from california who’s going to the same pages at the same time as i am, it’s definitely still tracking me.

  • Something about it isn’t quite right….I keep getting “hits” from Hong Kong that I never got before – I don’t know anyone in Hong Kong, and I had a tracker before this, and there were never visitors from Hong Kong before Footprints started.  What’s even stranger is that the Hong Kong person is getting through sometimes, and not other times, because I have an I-ban-you.com  blocker set up for my Xanga, as well, and Hong Kong just began showing up there, as well.  This sounds as strange as all the hits from VA and DC that others are getting. 

    With a blocker, Hong Kong should not be getting in at all.  And why are they suddenly there in the first place?  It almost seems as if Footprints is letting more strangers into lots of peoples’ sites.

  • I love this feature, but would love it if it could recognize when we are signing in. I use a multiperson computer, so therefore I do not stay signed in at all times.

  • now all i need is a daemon that will scan for OS’s and open internet ports automatically. maybe an nmap plugin of some kind. it would be nice to get a trace on the xanga user ip address. maybe even a button that automatically will ping the user so i know if they are online. cheers.

  • Head’s up with footprints. There might be a problem with the footprints code… I have people coming to my blog through their footprints to check me out when I haven’t even been to their blog. I’m not sure what this deal is. I would have thought maybe someone had gotten into my blog, but I haven’t had any problems with code crackers and nobody is messing with my blog content.

  • footprints should show country origin regardless of signed in status. some people go to different countries and log in, this will also help users find out if someone has stolen an account and put in fake comments.

  • Thanks – footprints appear to be working great, and whatever was going on Friday and Saturday appears to be over, for a while.

    I do see a few footprints of mine, depending on what is going on. The most recent thing that shows up appears to be times when I attempt to go to one of my pages, and my login at xanga forces me to login. I don’t know whether that’s a cookie time out on xanga’s part, something on firefox’s part, someone logging me out, or what. Not a big deal for me … only happens occasionally .

    Still haven’t seen any hits on my photo blog, so I don’t know if that’s being footprinted or not…

    It looks like you don’t have any Footprints at this time – Just keep writing new entries, leaving comments on other sites, and participating in the Xanga Community – eventually you’ll start getting some footprints!

    i choose not to post where i live for this very reason. however i do rather like the idea of knowing who has been looking at my site. i suppose you cannot have one without the other, as it would defeat the purpose of the system because the wrong people would use it to their advantage. still . . . :/
    could you perhaps add a feature so that one might be selective? for example, a close friend would see my state and username, but a friend-of-a-friend would see only my state, that sort of thing? if my residence is required, it seems safer not coupled with my username.

    xanga is a service i enjoy very much, thank you xanga team for all you put into it.

  • okay i have found this feature on my private page, and over the past few days have 1 hit from hong kong, several from illinois, 1 from kentucky, several from googlebot (what is that, btw?) and several from california. xanga lock blocks out most of these, but the savvy californian has found a way to read my html. how do i prevent this? also, some “footprints” just say united states. why?

  • It is a very good system. In fact, it tracked people/users that my normal javascript tracker didn’t catch.

    If I could make a suggestion, if there could be some way where you can be more specific on where a person is logging in from. I know you guys wanted to avoid the ip address method, because that is obviously unsafe to the public community. However, if there is a possible way where you can go as far as saying what city non-logged in visitors are from, it would help make the footprint system much more useful and practical.

    This site (being used by the Gottem tracker) can actually pinpoint the city where a person is logging in from, but by use of an ip address. Maybe you can find a way to blend this in with the system?:

  • I have created a blogring which no longer works.  I have tried to delete members, which worked, but only down to the last 2. I remain unable to either delete the other member or leave myself.  I would like to leave this blogring. But xanga has not let me thusfar.  The page is “not found”. 

    The blogring is “gaurdians of the sacred strangeness”.

  • In my footprints, “Googlebot” keeps showing up. It’s not the Xanga member googlebot, because Xangans show up as a link, and non-logged-in people show up in plain black font. This shows up in plain black font, just like a location. What is Googlebot?

    it’s all HTML code, and I have no idea why this is showing up every single hour.  Either I have a stalker who inexplicably chooses to view the source coding, or something’s wrong.

    does anybody else have this problem?

    I  don’t know if this is a real person or a glitch.

  • I think that if you are going to have tracker’s you should just always show the name of the person that is visiting your profile and a link back to theirs. If they were worried about have privacy and xanga, they wouldn’t have a PUBLIC INTERNET site. I don’t see how that’s an issue.

  • I keep getting these views from California and Jersey and a few other states that I don’t know people in. I know they are Xanga users because the referrer shows they came in through Xanga lock but I can’t find out who they are. What do I do?

    Also I have a few blocked users and I thought by using Xanga Lock they when they signed in they would be blocked from my site but that didn’t work. Why is that? They are blocked from commenting and subscribing but why won’t Xanga Lock block them out completely?

    Speaking of which, John, I seem peculiar behavior in the footprint stats on the feedback log page. For instance, just a moment ago, it was showing 64 footprints from about 30 minutes ago. So I refreshed the page – and it showed 58 footprints.

    Since my 13th birthday I had the same Xanga, now Im nearing the age of 14. Ive seen Xanga grow up with many new things. But I must say I am disapointed in you. Your turning into MySpace! Without my Xanga I would go insane. With my Xanga I can write whatever I want about whoever I want and not get cought. But now with some of your new stuff, you seem like MySpace.

    I understand that you may be worried that some Xangans may be getting stalked and raped. But see, people who have MySpace make it so they seem like they WANT to be raped. People who use Xanga use it for so much more. Atleast I and some others do. Im sure that people on Xanga know the dangers of online journals but we are diffrent from MySpace users.

    What Im trying to say, is dont go to far with all these extra stuff. Like for one, who really needs 99 profile pictures? I mean honestly! You’d have to change them a few times a day to use them all. Also you should build in trackers on every Xanga without having to go with Premium.

    Im not even sure if any of you will see this, but alot of people think this.

    Unforunately, the site was misnamed as a socializing services site in the vein of Myspace, tagged, tagworld, bebo, and famoodle.  I thought Xanga strictly saw itself as a Blog hosting site in the likes of livejournal and blogspot?

  • Just wondering…. how often will this log incorrectly? I know you took off our own footprints, but it is still logging my visits, just logging them from the wrong place. For example, it just listed a visitor to my site from Virginia. The visitor is me, I know because of the referring url. The problem is, I am not in Virginia! This has happened more than once. I’ve checked it out and tested it to be sure that it was actually me it was listing, and it is. Can you guys fix that?

  • okay, while this is amusing me endlessly, I thought I’d let you know (or just reinforce your knowlege) about how the footprints are not always in the feedback log for me. I’ve got premium, so the feedback log is on my page, right (non-xanga dash)- well, comments etc all are all there, but footprints make an appearance and then when I refresh it’s gone.

    plus, same sort of thing happens when I’m trying to go from profile to weblog to photoblog. sometimes the ‘photoblog’ button is there, sometimes it’s not. or sometimes that’s there and profile one isn’t. I realise that there must be some tweaks here and there but I thought I’d let you know.

  • On this footprints subject, somebody from california had been on my old site many, many times. and this person had been previewing my site, like you do when your in the look and feel. My friend and I got freaked out so we deleted our sites. I made this new one and blocked all non-xangans, and on the footprints it showed he’d tried to get to my new site, but wasn’t able to.

     I want to know how this california person found my new site, right after i’d made it.

  • There isn’t really a “trying to get into a site”, unless they are trying to log into xanga as you. There is “trying out a lot of links on my public xanga page”. Is that what you mean?
    Because I have seen that as well – just today, from some california site, I saw a series of what seemed, to me, to be clicks down the various links on my front xanga page.

    Shrug – who cares? Either one is writing xanga entries for anyone to read, or they are writing for any Xanga member to read, or they are writing for a very small number to read (by using the protected status) or they are writing for themselves (by using the private status).

Simply because you can see certain people whom of which you might not WANT to know exactly how many times a day they view your page.. hmm im having mixed feelings about this whole thing, i dont know whether to love it or hate it

    I keep having footprints from someone in California, and under the “Page Visited” heading there’s this snippet of URL: “/rss.aspx?user=captkats…”
    Whenever I click it, I see XML that I’m not sure how to decipher.

    I’m slightly concerned, and I would deeply appreciate your help.

  • Looks good =)  Quick question though: I see a lot of someone in california continually accessing my site at 2 minute to 2 hour intervals.  Do a lot of other users see this as well?  I temporarily had xanga lock on so this person was actually constantly just clicking and seeing the “sorry this page has a xanga lock” message.  I just thought I’d ask because although I did see other footprints from across North America, a really large number were from California [where I don't know anyone].  Thanks in advance, and keep up the good work.

    Well, that probably came out formatted badly. What it is is a copy/paste from my footprints page. I was logged on, and went from my dash.xanga.com page to follow a new comment link… and got a footprint entry because of it. Personal accesses of pages isn’t supposed to show up…

  • The idea of leaving footprints is kinda funny to me. I think of ”leaving footprints” and it feels like I left evidence at a crime scene and some Sherlock Holmes or Columbo with a magnifying glass found them . Kinda like discovering fingerprints in an episode of CSI. Nonetheless, I like it.

  • I really like these footprints (now I can see when viewers outside of Xanga are reading my site, and I get a better feel for how many actually read my blogs). But I don’t think mine’s working correctly. The number shown on my blog page under “Feedback Log” never matches the number when I click on Footprints.

    Right now, for example, I have “23″ footprints under “Today”. I click on Footprints and it says there are “13″. Oops, I refreshed and it changed to “23″, but the list didn’t change. Hmmm… refreshed a couple more times and it went back to 13.

    And in the morning I often see 2 or 3 new footprints, but when I go to feedbackfootprints.aspx it says none new. So I check yesterday to see if they were there, but the list was the same as the night before.

    Something definitely screwy here.

    there childern better as we were once children some parents are not able to understand there child as well as other do. its depending who you have for families or friends that who are close to you. when your by your self one wants to look for some one and fall in love with hoping she is the right women or the right man that has settled with one of the other. then children come in. how many plan for children and how many did not expect to plan for children?

    children are the importance that we teach other to be loving kind moral and to teach them the rights and wrongs. and there are other children that who are special needs who are not book learners as others are does who don’t progress as well as others do who are the ones we need to pay more attention too if we can except them. sociaty has changed a lot since we were kids in the 60′s and 70′s there are more issues now then before how one raises there children. there are who were special needs children who are now adults that have speacial need children there self some times are not able to except them untill one see’s the other side of the light. as I was my self a special needs child growing up in a world. that had has two boys my self that is living with there cousins.

    social workers don’t check each other parents back grounds but label ppl as cases in there files for exsample. and they keep going back to you if t here a another call made
    I feel there should be some kind of change in the social welfare Dept of human services
    on mild cases. there was a case that a family was reported on constantly for small things that was said about them when ppl from families United came to there house and once a case was made against them there ppl worked with them once the 90 days was done and this family did what they wanted to do untill there was a case made upon them once again after it was over the family moved where they was not to be continiously reported
    some other ppl call to make a cases upon the family with more purely lies to get social workers to come back.

    this why I feel the system of social work should be changed not to breath down your back and have ppl being scared what might happen to there children once they are in there house. I agree on extreme csaes if there is something much worse or a child getting hurt twice but children are at times accident prone as well. can any one out there see the problems of what social worker do to some one family that have a mild case? I want to hear discusion

We are witnessing a record number of hurricanes, cyclones, typhoons, and storms that are ravaging parts of Europe. Due to the radical changes in weather, millions of people in countries around the world are facing starvation and extinction. but those are just words: starvation and extinction. Stop thinking about them as just words. Think of their meaning – men, women, and children, hungry and homeless and facing death. This past summer, more than twenty thousand people died in a heat wave in Europe. And what have we done about it? … absolutley nothing. The message is that we dont give a damn what happens to the rest of the world. We’ll just go ahead and do what suits us. Are we so dense, so self-absorbed that we cant see what were doing to our environment? As all of us are aware, the greenhouse effect is cause by the burning of fossil fuels and other related factors completley under our control, and yet those emissions have reached their highest point in half a million years They are polluting the air that our children and grandchildren breathe. The pollution can be stopped. And why isnt it? because it would cost big business money. MONEY! How much is a breath of fresh air worth compared to the life of a human beeing? A gallon of gas? Two gallons of gas? As far as we know, this Earth is the only place that habitable for us, yet we’re polluting the land and the oceans and the air we breathe as fast as we can.

  • Footprints are useful – especially the country and referrer. I’m not concerned about ppl seeing me or vice versa. In fact this function gets me to check out who’s checking my blogs out.

    I originally locked out non-xanga users but then asked…what for? So now it’s public again.

  • Hey, John, I was just noticing that my own visits to my site are being logged as anonymous footprints, some of which are tagged “California” (I’m from Maryland, and IP locators always tag my location as somewhere in the MD/DC/Northern VA area.). The rest are just tagged “United States.” Should this be happening?

  • I like that you’re giving what the people want, and it’s awesome. However…I think most people want more though. Don’t want to sound ungrateful or anything. But the reason we have trackers is so we know who is visiting our sites and if anyone is leaving bad comments or harrassing us we know exactly who that person is. It’s not really “lack of privacy” with these trackers because ALL users have the option to NOT visit any Xanga. I think Xanga owners should have more control of their Xanga than visitors since visitors are always free to leave the site and never visit again. Any friends of the Xanga owner wouldn’t be afraid of leaving their name on a tracker…only someone looking to cause trouble would be afraid.

  • One of the best ideas I’ve ever heard, I just found out last night at a party that almost everybody I had ever talked to in school read my xanga, something I assumed that almost nobody did!

    So thank you, it’s actually a huge confidence boost to see that a lot of people read who never stick around long enough to leave comments!

For example, i love writting down everything that happens to me but there are certain people i dont want on my xanga but then again i dont want to privsate them cause then nobody could see it, so you should make ways of blocking certain users from looking at your xanga

  • I have protected entries and Xanga lock on, and it keeps saying that the Cali person visits my Xanga lock page. Note: this is not the referring page, as there is none. Most common times are 1am and 1pm EST. I tried visting this same Xanga lock page, and it turns out to be the one saying that you must be signed in to view this person’s Xanga. I wish we could at least clear the footprints history of certain viewers.

  • I think I agree with several of the posters here – I have no problem that xanga has made the anonymous xanga surfing feature available. But users on the other side of things should be able to “xanga lock” those users out, just as you’ve given them the ability to lock out people who are not logged into xanga. That’s probably the most important of the missing pieces in the protection setup.

    The other social problem that seems to be more thorny is what feature to provide to protect people from stalkers who keep getting new xanga ids when they are blocked. I think that one solution to this would be an option that says that only subscribers to a xanga page can read the entries.

    Just to let you know the footprints arent working right for me.
    They keep saying I live in 1) the UK
    2) New york and 3) Australia ……. when I live in California.And no. no one from australia, new york or the uk visit my site. I have a tracker from fingerprintx.com and the ONLY person that visits my site is from Georgia and it wont even log him.
    And somtimes it wont “catch” visitors. When I have a comment from someone, their footprint wont show up.

  • The feeble attempts you and the rest of the admin team have put in place in order to “protect” our posts between our PCs and your servers is a failure.  The whole idea, in fact, is an admission that your service is unreliable.

    Stop trying to reinvent the wheel and fight convention.  Offer up a client side application where construct our posts, if you cannot ensure the integrity of your website/webservice/database.

  • at what point will we be able to categorize our posts? i think it’d be helpful to order my posts by topic. i blog about several different things but often times my posts are about similar subjects, ie: music, technology, faith. i think it’d be even more helpful & forward thinking of xanga to install a breadcrumb finder which routes users to the topic they want to tag their post as.

    ex: i blog about my eating disorder (a very common subject on xanga), i can tag that as personal issue > health & beauty > anorexia

    then other anorexics can find all posts about anorexia & learn from one another.

    this isn’t same thing as blogrings, this enables users to ordering & classify their content much like tagging photos. this data-aggregation would be great for any blog site, but i’ve yet to see it. also, think of the advertising opportunities that show up when you have advertisers buy keywords.

    people blogging & tagging about cellphones? new banner opportunties for nokia, cingular, sprint, verizon. hey…why don’t i work for you guys?

  • How does xanga figure out what state people are from?  People from Ohio are showing up as being from California and Wisconsin… I don’t know if there’s a way to fix that, but I just wanted to let you know! Otherwise I really like the feature!

  • i also saw an earlier comment about some random person from CA making repeated visits to their site.  i have the same issue, so i added the lock feature.  they still come multiple times per day, but all they get to is the lock page.

    my question is with the footprints counter… i think it may have a bug, because mine rarely matches the actual total listing shown.  for example, it will say i have 3 footprints today, but 4-5 different usernames will show up in the listing.   what’s up with that?

  • Ummmm, I went to go check my FootPrints and there are people from Vietnam, Hong kong, UK, California, and many other places. I don’t recall knowing anyone from these places. This is pretty much the same thing happening with other Xangans according to their comments, and I want to know why this is happening.

  • Thanks for adding this feature!  Now could someone from the Xanga team post instructions on how to activate the Reviews and Events links in the Reviews and Events section in Xanga help?  Only help there is how to add or delete a post to either link.  I believe there was an update post awhile back that had the instructions, but can’t be found now.  FYI… tried sending ‘contact us’ form post to xanga team in the Reviews and Events category and the error msg comes up or page not found upon sending.   Pete

  • well you cant see everyone who visits your site still so people should still use trackers.i went to see mine and couldnt see all the usernames.not a good idea cuz everyone should use it.

    i have found out through footprints that someone in cali has been looking at my xanga sevral times a day, on today 6/14/06, this person has looked at my site 8 times as of 620 om EST. its kinda worrying me becuse i dont know anyone in cali and this is not just like once a month or even week. this is every day thier looking at my site a minimum of 4 times. i would rather like to know whats going on.

  • hi this foot print idea is a good idea but when it comes to showing IP address of the users then it’s not a privacy after all please check this site

  • Question – how does tracking work if you are looking at your subscriptions through your xanga site? (IE you hit the Subscriptions button but don’t actually go to their site?)

  •   You need to make the featured content based on unique hits to web pages.Currently they are based on comments.Problem with comments is as people comment back and forth (the same two people) it appears there is a lot of activity on that web page when it may be only several people posting multiple comments driving up the comment rating. Downside of this is there are quite of few really neat sites I have stumbled across but never have made it to featured content because they are recieving these exagerated amounts of repeat comments made by only several people. Just a thought.

  • heres a suggestion: you should put a delete link at the end part of a blog entry on the main site instead of in the xtools, it would be a lot more convenient.

    I was just sitting here looking at my footprints from today and then I clicked to view yesterday’s and it said I didn’t have any. Then from that point on, all of my tabs said that I didn’t have any.

  • Hi, I really hope someone in charge of xanga stuff reads this. You’ve probably got alot of complaints already, but there’s this group of girls who all have similar pages, no extra work put into them, short, simple, impersonal names, and only one entry that sometimes has pretty poor English in it, and they go around visiting people’s sites and sometimes posting inappropriate webpages and comments, mostly on the guys sites. It’s really creeping me out, and I guess there’s no solid way to prove that all the sites are connected, but here is a list of all the ones who have visited my site so far:

  • Is referrer the person who visited your site – right?

  • Today I got somewhere on the order of 400 footprints from what Xanga Footprints terms Pennsylvania. The only referrer at all was http://www.domain.com. From a quick scan, it would seem like a bot was just clicking on all the links on my homepage, but not clicking any links on the linked pages. Was someone trying an attack on your servers, or is this just some fluke? If it is an attack, I wish you the best of luck.

    I’ve read what you wrote about the FOOTPRINTS feature but it doesn’t seem to be working on my site.  I can never tell who visited.  For example, I currently have 72 footprints, and I’m told that I have none?  I had 0 footprints last night so I know they are new.  Could they all be from AOL, YAHOO, and the like?  Thanks.  And Happy New Year!  MagdaleneEugene
