  • UPGRADED PROFILES

    Today we’re announcing the public launch of our upgraded profiles!  Now you can:

    • Fill out tons more profile fields
    • Connect with your friends online
    • More easily search and find your friends

    Please keep in mind: you do not have to upgrade your profile.  If
    you do upgrade, your profile will still look and work the same (unless
    you had Codes or Pictures in there)… it’s just that the profile will
    have new Superpowers.  My favorite is Memories – you can leave
    “memories” for your friends.  You can check out the memories of Chris, Dan, Dave, Joel, Jon, Marc, Mary, and Monsur – that’s the team that build this new feature!  Don’t forget to also check out the new Chatboards and Nudges…

    Thanks to everyone who helped out with our earlier beta testing. 
    We incorporated a lot of feedback, and fixed a bunch of bugs. 
    There was some concern that the upgraded profiles might cost money -
    please don’t worry, the profiles are completely free.  Also, some
    people expressed concern that Xanga will become a
    popularity contest.  We are extremely aware of the danger, and
    promise to do everything we can to keep Xanga genuine and real.

BUT, I DO have a problem I can’t leave, and that is the uncredited to me paid one year gift of Premium I have repeatedly written to the appropo help person about. Jan 26th I was given a year’s extension on my already paid Premium…and NOW I supposedly have the original running out in 3-4 days, and no one can find the paid for gift, even thogh I HAVE the mail from ya’ll announcing it. HELP!!

  • It seems to have the same feel as MySpace, but with more options. I’m not liking the single column thing however, it makes the scroll to the bottom a very long journey. I’m hoping in the future we will be able to customize colors, and things like that. I think it is kind of odd that we have a friends list on the profile, and a subscription list on the blog, which seems kind of redundant. However I believe that MySpace does that also.

    I just hope this doesn’t turn into another MySpace, where people just have profiles and the blogging portion is gone, or ignored for the most part.

    I really really don’t want the true meaning of Xanga to be gone. It is supposed to be a BLOG, not a contest to find out who can get more friends, which is exactly what MySpace has become.

  • Seems like “me too” disease has infected Xanga.  I like Xanga because more about pure blogging.  MySpace is a visually polluted mess and for the most part very shallow.  I thought Xanga was different, now it’s going down the exact same road.  I’d much prefer if you spent resources adding serious blogging features like RSS support.  This isn’t really innovation, it’s being a copy cat.

  • Not impressed. I find this to be a sad attempt to add a myspace vibe to xanga. If I want something like myspace, I will go to myspace. I use xanga for the simple fact its not like myspace.

    BTW I like the ‘mood’ selection that LiveJournal has… see mine as example – I’ve been copying some of them to my Xanga… LOL Yeah, I switched to xanga only 1-2 weeks after I started my LJ one. Soon I’ll get rid of it, once I’m tired of some TV addictions. LOL

  • I’ll continue to give it a try.  Had a bad experience reaching out to a couple of folks who didn’t want to be reached out to, but hell, that’s not the first time that’s happened to me.  I’m tough.  Besides, the love that I have found throughout Xanga is infinitely more significant than the snobbish old-guard creeps who won’t let anyone new into their club.  As I said at the blog of just one of my multitude of friends, Xanga is like an infinite number of private clubs, each one more precious than the next.

  • Well, I’ve just finished performing the Beethoven “Spring” violin sonata in front of a croud of 500+! I purchased a new “E” string the day before that provided me with a very strong support in the higher registers. The overtones didn’t quite connect as far as I had anticipated in the chords with the “A” string past the natural harmonic, (7th position), which I needed for the dramatic ending that I had ornamented two octaves above the original score. What happened?, the piece ends with a typical authentic cadence where the top note plays vitality in the resolution. The A string completely dominated the chord, giving the feeling of a deceptive cadential inversion… not what I wanted, but it was ok. It’s really not that big a deal, but it bothers me that I did that. I’m playing the same piece for a radio show on Wednesday, and this performance has been negatively stimulating my nervous system for the past twenty-four hours! Perhaps addressing it via writing in a xanga will aid this.

  • yeah, and I hate the new profile. I want to not be searched for. Not having this dumb “friends” system is part of why I choose Xnge over the others. I’m not into connectivity and online networking, etc… I’m just into blogging. plain and simple. I like to keep my friends updated. Thats why we subscribe and have a blog ring. Someone tell me why we need to copycat the friend thing too? why sell out to the crowd? in doing so, you force yourself to be compared to the others. If you do that, you might as well go all way, because the differences seperated us from them. Now were’ “them lite”. This sucks. I want the old plain profile back.

  • Yes, I would like to downgrade. The new profiles will turn beloved xanga into *shudders* myspace!!!!

  • As a paying Xanga customer, I have to say that the “upgraded” profiles are a joke. Here’s why:

    1) The ability to include HTML in the Interests box for custom formatting is gone.
    2) Our last name cannot be displayed, even optionally. Paying customers should be able to display their last name.
    3) My birthday is displayed, and it appears that I can’t optionally turn that off

    There is no real “upgrade” in these profiles. The old profiles were more flexible and more robust. Simply adding stock categories, and removing features is not an upgrade.

    Put me back to the old way. THAT would be an upgrade.

    Here on Xanga, the UPGRADED profile eliminates HTML in the Interests box, won’t display anything after a space in the first name.

  • i’m not sure if this happens to anyone else, but i can’t actually edit any of the new profile stuff, because i can’t see it. i have internet explorer 7 beta 2, and for whatever reason the left side panel floats in front of the middle panel. this is the same way on the xanga home page. i’m not sure if this issue is because of the beta 2, or xanga. but this is the only site i’ve had problems with, and i’ve been using beta 2 for about a month now. just thought i’d let you know it could be an issue.

  • with sooooooooooooo many people not liking the new profiles and/or asking to go back, this seems like a major mis-step by xanga.  i think there needs to be a way to go back to the classic profile for those who are not into the who myspace look and feel.  also, perhaps it would be a good idea to get feedback from members on major proposed changes *before* spending all the time, effort and money developing them.  it appears to me the development team is not really in tune with what makes xanga appealing to the users who are here.

  • I have a request for those of us who have 800*600 screens and use the dashboard. Can you make it a little bit more compatable to our resolution? That would be incredible.

    Also, there is a menu in the profiles that is similar to the one in the dash, but the one in the profile is like a bazillion times sexier. Put it into dash too.

  • two things i noticed…

    1. if i type non-English letters in my profile, it displays them correctly (and the edit screen looks much better than the old one, i can actually see what i typed), but on the “View profile” page (the screen with the “Edit” button) they all show up as question marks…

    2. if i press the Enter key twice on the edit screen i get a blank line, but when i view the public profile there’s no new paragraph, so i thought, “oh, i get to enter HTML”. but when i tried that the tags show up.

    i guess these count as things that are confusing

I thought that’s what subscription lists are for… friending is pointless on xanga- as it should be.     I don’t know what happend to Xanga, but I really can’t stand signing in that much anymore. Everytime I visit the site it seems to make me sign in, a few months ago, I used to be signed in all the time.

    It’s a huge hassle for me, because my password is just huge because I don’t want anyone to find out what it is…But…Did you guys change the security or something?? I dunno, Haha.

    I love Xanga though — I’m sick of Myspace, this is so much cooler ((even though they’re 2 different things))

  • It reminds me to much of Myspace. And i dislike myspace very greatly. You need to stick to being xanga, dont try to convert xanga to another type of myspace just because myspace may seam more popular. There are still those that are loyal to xanga.

    the only reason more people like those is cuz of word of mouth.

    the reason i picked xanga is because it is a blog site, no other crap!

    everything on it basic. you make posts, people can comment, sign gb, and subscribe. and then theres blogrings

    everything you do can be undone, anybody can create one(or a thousand), and its easy

    you guys are trying too hard to think up stupid ideas.

    i liked the titles thing, that was good, you guys have had good ideas before

    and the “flag” thing was okay, too

    the optional dash, and optional fancy editor were okay but this profile thing is too far

    the “memories”, the “chatboard”, the “messages”, and the “nudges”, take away from everything else on xanga

    you want ideas? try some simple stuff.

    it used to be nothing was complicated, and all the stuff was simple options that affected the basic html for your site. look and feel and public profile are like big code generators

    you want some little improvements so your idea makers can keep jobs?

    how bout adding an option of music being a visible player or not shown.

    all it would do edit one part of the embed tag on everybodys site

    and if you did that, when someone chose visible, they could choose colors.

    blue and white(filter:none)

    black(filter:xray)

    gold and black(filter:invert)

    white(filter:gray)

    i know that idea has flaws, cuz the windows media player thing would be different if someone wasnt using windows.

    heres a big idea: get a few more servers and let people upload files(not just images!) to their site!

    maybe it would be best to make that a premium only feature(and/or premium plus)

    make some stuff better for premium users! they got no reason to stay premium anymore!

    how bout user friendly skin making? now you can make a skin with no html experience.. perhaps drag and drop the modules…(interesting?)

    clean up look and feel a little.

    match website stats with header

    call it footer(which is what it is), and give it the same kind of options as header

    and make input your own header/footer html as easy as your editor

    dont make it rich text, but allow people to add an image or text or link in and the code would appear in the box. most people dont know how to add in a img tag right

    that way custom header and input your own header html wouldnt be seperate things. youd be able to control background color and text colors……

    but maybe you could make it seperate things…one would be you control the colors and you just see the preview, which youd be able to drag to make the boxes bigger and postion text and images….

    then the other would have a preview and youd watch it change as you added html

    now if youi were really smart yo could have those combined, and work vise versa

    like you try to edit the preview part and the html part would change as you do it.(you make it bigger, and you could see the pixels go up)

    in fact…that would make one hell of an editor, too.

    you want account settings? let people control the # of posts on each page. people tried to do that with a code, but the code, can only allow a less amount, and only xanga itself can let people control each page like that

    and one thing i really hate is the banner ad. it shouldnt actually be part peoples sites, it should be above it. what i mean is everything should start after the ad ends, cuz it throws off background images.

    i know, i know youd have to reconfigure everything and probably put it in another iframe(though that might actaully be more convient for the advertisers when you click on it, and it would get rid of the growing ADREMOVER!!! problem)

    a much better idea would be to take away that horrible ad, and put in a module on all classic users sites like you guys have at the main page. or maybe one of the google adsense things you guys recently put on

    oh and what happened to those little sprite orange basketballs? i liked those!

    and add more fonts to look and feel

    heres another idea that sounds kind of stupid, but people would love it…..

    let people decorate their profile pics. just change it to a little flash thing, and allow people from now on to put eyes that follow and halos that shine and horns that go to flames every few seconds and bombs and tails and little glittery jewelery things and doodle and text and make people open peoples mouth and do stuff to them like poke them and feed them…..it would be funny!

    just an idea…

    add some cool stuff to look and feel like options for editing your scrollbar(and what side its on). and let people choose what side their modules are on

    heck, let people choose if they want modules or not. let them put stuff in boxes at the top. you could even have different configurations for your site of where header codes, profile stuff, footer codes, subscriptions, and blogrings will all be located. they would all have the same propeties so someone could easily change back and forth. or maybe that would be part of that user friendly skin thing for premium.

    you wanna do something simple? add some more templates to the setup wizard.

    let people put background images in whatever parts of their site thay want(like dates, entries, header, footer, module body, module title….)

    let people control the color of text for things for dates(along with background color), and bold, and and italic, and titles(h4)! seriously!

    let people control widths and stuff of modules and blog. and scrollbars!(overflow:auto, i think)

    and if you were gonna do that, let people add filters.

    i know some of this would destroy “layouy makers” “jobs”, but theyre the worst, you dont want them

    they steal images, they act official, they harass, they put ads on their sites, they tell people their stuff is copyrighted, they half the time dont know what theyre doing and mess up peoples sites(leading to more questions to you), and give unknowing people THE ADREMOVER!!!!!. they also take off things like the footer links, modules, the message board, and other crap like that. worst of all they give everybody custom modules

    okay you want a xanga with all your cool ideas?

    make another one

    introducing xanga2! requires activeX control

    everything uses a flash player

    things are popup.

    people can promote music, upload files, sell their music and images(money added to your Xanga2 bill, and taken out of theirs)

    you have a blog, but like your fierce competors, thats not the best part.

    interconnected chatboards, its the first blog to be completely flash player…

    the private version of your site is the dash, which includes:

    1. options for your chatboard…..

    chatboard contains the option of a regualr message, add a memory, add a nudge

    2. your blogmaker

    3.. your site editor, which allows people to shape color, size and arranment of all parts to their site. the editor is completely flash, drag and drop, no html at all!

    all images and files are uploaded or transloadedto the flash in the file, no urls people can use, no one stealing your bandwisth, no xangan stealing another xangans photo or song

    4. blogrings youre in and have made

    blogrings can be edited by the owners; the way the look, what category…

    5. your friends list.

    whos attempted to friend you, with options to deny or allow

    when you friend someone, you get information on when theyve updated and their bulletins

    friend is a mutual thing, so everybody whos “your friend, your “their friend”

    6. whos been viewing your blog, profile, and actual site itself.

    7. blocked users. you can block people from emailing you, from giving you any kind of message, or from going to your site all together

    8. account settings: all the basics including disabling profile

    9. your email address! all xangans get one and its how they recieve information

    you can attach files and the editor for your email address is flash, and email is how people recieve bulletins

    this flash thing will cost 30$ a month, but theres unlimited bandwidth and you can buy more file storage

    with your xanga flash you can add and make things for your xanga. put together videos and icons(all only working on xanga), and even make simple games, menus for guides or whatever the heck you want to put on your xanga

    you can make blogs in videos and/or audio. you can also attach video or audio to your messages and bulletins and personal email

    this xanga will contain awesome emoticons and smileys.

    it will contain a billion different options

    you can setup things like a dreamjournal, stories with images, play games with other xangans created by other xangans

    you can add to the drawing board, have pets and monsters on your site

    you can interact liveaction with people

    talk with people without refreshing

    use eprops as epoints to do cool stuff and trade them at the game center

    you can use tools to use your xanga to become a publicist, dj, singer, promoter, artist, and a whole buncha crap

    this dream xanga is not for here.

  • I would REALLY like to downgrade.

    I find it rather unfair that you’re all advertising this new profile upgrade, saying how great it is and all, but………. it’s rather like a trap. Once you get in, you can’t get out. The downgrade option would be a really good idea. I don’t like the friends system (I mean, isn’t that just what subscriptions are for anyway?), and I think the memories and “friend”ing people are kind of lame. It’s a ripoff of all the other sites that came on later than Xanga, and it’s kind of…… sad that you’d have to take their ideas. I find it distressing that Xanga is becoming more and more like those other sites.

    I think that many people, including myself, would appreciate it if you added a downgrade option.

    With the upgraded profiles, can you please make the “About Me” portion respect line breaks? For instance, if I were to input two paragraphs:

    “Paragraph 1.

    Paragraph 2.”

    They are displayed as I wish them to be when I edit the profile, but they are smashed together in the public view. Is there a way you all can fix that?

  • Here’s another vote for the downgrade option. Like several other people on this page of comments, I don’t like how Xanga seems to be turning into Myspace or the like with “friends” or Livejournal with the “memories” and “nudges.” I also don’t like how my username appears if I don’t fill in my own name, like someone above me said. I really hate how now that I touched the new profile settings, I can’t get back the old stuff. I especially miss the option to show/hide stuff in the profile module on your blog page. Well, I mean, I acutally don’t know if all the new information will also show up on the blog page–because I’m now too afraid to try and find out for myself, for fear that I’ll make irreparable changes to my blog modules. Please let us downgrade!

  • I just amde my account and I didn’t have to upgrade. It was already upgraded. I don’t like the upgraded profile.

    The old one is better and I never had any issues with it like I do with the new one!

    The username instead of a blank space when I don’t enter a first name is really annoying.

    I don’t like that I HAVE to enter a Metro instead of just putting my country. That makes the new profiles a lot like MySpace is sometimes, but even MySpace lets you just put a country!

    I don’t like that I have to go over the river and through the woods just to edit my profile.

    I liked it when everything was downgraded!
