  • UPDATE ON DASH BETA!

For the last few days, we've been reading your comments on the new dash
(yes, we do read every single one!).  First, a quick
clarification: You are the only one who sees your Dash (and only when
you'e signed in). Your friends will still see your regular public blog,
    which is still fully customizable.

We also made a few tweaks based on your collective feedback... let us know what you think!

    • The Dash will be optional.
A number of people have expressed concern that the Dash will completely
replace the current private Xanga page.  Please don't worry - if
you don't like the Dash, we'll create an opt-out that lets you use your
      old "private" xanga page.

    • We've added a full preview for each entry.
Many Xangans mentioned that it was hard to read posts off the dash, due
to the "truncated entries".  We added a preview and WOW... you
were right! It's so much easier to read and edit posts.

    • We added language encoding support.
A number of users reported that Chinese and other foreign langauges
didn't appear right in the dash.  Now you can just change your
language setting here (note: this won't translate the Xanga interface... it will just impact how we store your weblog posts).

    • We're also looking into the color scheme. We have yet to finalize this one though.  Will post more updates on this as soon as we have 'em.

We're still working out some kinks in the page, but you can check out the Dash tweaks here!

  • It's cool.

    =O

    Real-time = nice.

Optional = good idea.. I don't think EVERYONE will like it.

  • im hot hot hot

  • Sweet. No idea what Dash is, but sweet!

Hope you have a merry Christmas :) ,

    Andie

  • I think it's good...!!
    --Sloves

  • Much better!

  • :) , yay-thanks. much better.

  • w00t!!!!! go xanga!!!!! we luvs ya, xanga!!!!

  • Dude, it freaking rocks.

    -Aaron

  • hey i gots an idea, instead of just sending notices that people got a comment, maybe send the comment with? because i know some people almost never get to check xanga at home but at school they decided to block us!

  • very awesome.
i'm wondering though, why is the year (2005) in big letters (like the day), but the month is in tiny letters? i know its to fill up the space, but the month is more imporant than the year. you could make it like 22 Dec (instead of December)..

  • awesome!

  • Looking fantastic!
I really like the new changes... you guys are doing great!
I hope you and the entire Xanga Team have a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!

  • i love it. i want it!!!!

  • very fly 'jon. I'm pumped to the fact this Dashboard...

...might go applett soon? would you agree? It just seems the next logical step. It'd be a bunch like Google Desktop, with taskbar notification boxes for every new comment, guest book entry, and subscription. I'd download it in a heart beat. HTML is still so.. temporary. Tubular though. Tubey.

    Pj the pirate

  • Hey it looks really cool but I think it would even be better if it would show the backgroud of are site? Also it's a little to much for one page, but maybe you could make it more like web-mail or something, but that's just my opinion.

  • Hooray for optional!

  • It'd be cool if we could pick our own color scheme for it. Thanks! I like the idea!

  • cool =)

  • well I commented on it before, but I'll do it again. It looks cool... just wish that they'd have a lifetime statistic of comments/eprops instead of just the day/week. That'd be nice :) .

  • JOHN, you updated.
thank you, than you so much for this dash.
    THANK YOU

  • It's fugly

  • Yeah. I hate the color...

  • show the first five or so subscriptions when the Subs tab is clicked instead of the subs page, or even show snippets of the latest five updated subs instead of entrys on the subs tab

  • effing awesome, and wo0t for working on a colour scheme! looks kinda... um... green right now o__o;;. very green, in fact. festively green?

  • nice, i see that the 'settings' and 'blogrings' tabs are now properly integrated. 'preview this weblog entry' works and feels as i expect, and i trust that 'edit this weblog entry' and 'email this weblog entry' will soon follow suit--and likewise w/ the 'more info' links in the upper right feedback block, right? meaning that i am expecting all the dash links which currently go to legacy pages to be updated to link to dash-style counterparts.

dhtml does lend itself well to switchable color schemes--it seems to be one of the first things any given dhtml api dev team adds lol. making it skinnable and all would be a nice premium feature for you guys to offer.

    offtopic:
you know, i remember yrs ago when one of your staff came by my doomworld page and pimped xanga to me a little bit. i checked it out, but never did much w/ it since i was already well entrenched in doomworld. but i tired of having to confine my content to doom topics there.

i've been in some discussions abt leaving xanga for blogger/livejournal/et. al., and the trump card which you guys always have is the community here. even though the stuff here has been clunky, and even broken in places, i put up w/ it simply b/c of the way communities are done here.
    /offtopic

  • it's nice, but i'm glad it's optional.  i much prefer my private xanga to this.  and i would hate to see it go.

  • lol yea I didn't know what dash was either and I like that it's optional, thanks :)

  • you know what I would love....

to see my face on this site.

    whoo i'm pretty

  • oh my thanks you john! your'e my xanga role model
i have to try out this dash thing though, real time updates! now those preteniuos whores will comment first faster on those popular blogs! hahaha and i hate people that comment "first", theres no point

  • Cool. I like it a lot better with the full preview feature.

  • and what does the xanga comparison thing do? does it compare your eprops to the xanga world or something??!?!?!

  • The Dash would be great! But my concern is that it would be slow. And I do like the idea of a customizable color scheme (possibly a selection of a few dif pre designed schemes). I think that the Dash would improve Xanga 10 times over, but, my concern is that it would be too slow. :/

  • the preview on the dash is pretty nifty. i agree, it makes a whole world of difference to see the whole entry.

i changed my language setting to Korean, and tested it on the Dashboard. the truncated preview shows the korean words ("test") written out twice. but if i go to the full preview, the words are still encoded wrong. i left the test blog as the most recent private blog.

  • I have a question i seem to change the colors on my site and i cant get them to change back do u know any color code that i can use i just need the code for white.

  • Keep up the good work, and thanks to listing to the concerns.

  • I have a question i seem to change the colors on my site and i cant get them to change back do u know any color code that i can use i just need the code for white.

  • Not a big fan of the dash...

  • ive got a question .. and this maybe stupid and i just didnt pick this up ... lol

but how do u get this ... or is it not offered to us yet?

...hopefully that wasnt dumb ... but its kool tho

  • lovin' it john.

    lovin' it.

  • Looking forward to the rollout.

  • looks cool but umm yeah sending comments w/ the notice would be nice and i was wondering if you could give us a little more freedom and like have a better way to html code in there other than what already exisist

  • you know something like features on dreamweaver would be great

  • rock on keep it coming.

  • very cool, as long as we still have the option of doing things the old way :)

  • interesting!

  • It looks nice!
    Can we customise the design?
Can we change it back to our own design up to our choice?

  • The ever-flowing ever-changing photo manager rocks! Now I have something to look at while I am waiting for comments. Stupendous idea sailor.

    Sail on… sail on!!!

  • Hey guys, I love the new Dashboard. It's awesome. But I read somewhere that a guy said it would be nice to have something that keeps up with the comments that you leave, and what sites you leave them on.

Like for instance, if I liked someone's page and left a comment, but they never commented back, and I forgot who they were.. so I couldn't just go back and find them easily. I guess that's what the trial subscriptions are for... but I never use those... Ah, I just think it would be awesome to know who you comment, and when you do so.

    Have a great Christmas.

  • Also... just another irrelevant suggestion. I think it would be useful to be able to delete your own comments on someone else's page if you mess them up or say something you didn't mean to say. It's like, they are so final right now.. and sometimes I wish that I could delete my comment if I made a typo, and just retype it. Or maybe even an edit button.

  • Spiffy... now howsabout an API we can use to put stats on other widget systems (Konfab, Google, etc).. pleeeeeze?

  • you should make the whole page skinnier... I've gotta scroll sideways to see the whole thing (even wih my 19-inch monitor) - that's a pain, which would probably keep me away from it.

  • Hey its cool but i agree with runaway6290. with our background, it would be really cool and we could customize it for our taste.

  • Was that always there? Haha... If so, sorryyyyy!

  • Im really digging the new feedback.

  • lYk oMg..i tHiNk i kNoW yOu~hEhE~

    <3 aLySsA

  • very cool. it's always great to see what you guys are doing next!

  • I'm using Firefox 1.5 and the link has worked exactly once, the day you guys first introduced the dash. Now it doesn't work at all, the page loads, but none of my user info (blogs, comment tally, pictures) shows up.

  • I love how you've done the preview option.

  • oh. and I'd just like to say... that True ad, with the picture of a chick's chest and talks about "busting at the seams"... yeah, that's kind of gross.

  • i'm from the IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT school...but since Xanga seems to be prospering, how come y'all still haven't bought http://eminemsrevenge.com ...the only book on the market that has y'all in the dedication, as well as the bibliography

  • it would be really nice if we could customize the color scheme of our personal dash.

  • I'm finding that the True dating ads are really disrespectful to women.  Is there any posibility of removing them?

  • Ehh... I like it but it sorta disappeared before it finished loading... confusing. :-?

  • Maybe it's something to do with FireFox... is it Firefox Friendly??

  • It's good that this thing is optional

  • i love dash!!!!
    it helps me ALOT

  • John:

    I'm using FF 1.0.7.

  • Can we get rich text for the comment boxes?

  • WHAT IS DASH? HEY YALL WATS SUP?

  • Rich text in comment boxes would be nice, and probably more meaningful than the ability to edit comments afer they're posted.  Somehow I'm not sure why the Dash is so much better than Xanga as it is now, except for the real-time comment notification, and I'm not sure how the New Dash is better than the old one, other than the "preview" to read the whole post?  I agree with someone else that it would be nice for the "subscriptions" link page to be formatted like the Dash main page, with truncated entries from all the recently updated sites.  The boxes where the dates are in the regular Dash weblog section could be the profile pics of each newly updated subscription page, with the first couple sentences there to get an idea of what they wrote about but not having to scroll through the whole post in order to read the next subscription's post.  You know what I mean?  Also, another someone else mentioned comparison with Blogspot or Blogger.com, and I have to say that Xanga is INCREDIBLY easier to use than those sites & the others I've tried.  Back to the Dash, though, it'd still be nice to see my own layout/color scheme on the main page.

Thanks!!!  Have a very Merry Christmas & happy holiday season!  Looking forward to what the new year holds...

  • i think you should make it the color of the subscription page. then maybe it won't seem so different and new.

  • I like real time

  • Can I make love to you?

  • how do we add it...it's a good idea

  • subs should be in dash, eh?

  •  hey  i hope you have a merry christmas .

  • whats up i dont know u but im women_slayer05 holla back

  • Thanks for making it optional. I like the classic private page.

  • The DASH seems pretty kuhl. Thanks.

  • I know that you guys have yet to finalize the color of the dash, so I wanted to make a suggestion. Would it be possible for you guys to make the color of the dash customizable? I mean seriously. If it's gonna be our private Xanga, and we will be spending a lot of time on that page, it would make logical sense that we get to choose the color and/or background of it. Thanks.

  • Oh, and I agree with lifesong__x above. That ad is very gross and disturbing.

  • Spiffy! Will Dash be available to all users or only to paying users?

  • very very awesome

  • oh no! you've just made my addiction that much more accessible =( but GREAT JOB haha.

  • good idear.

  • Rich text in comment box would be great.

  • Pretty Bitching.... I like it. Real time is always best!! And having you only see it makes it good too. It would be kinda odd for friends to see not our reg... Dig?

  • I'm very glad that it's optional!  :)

    Happy Holidays to Everyone!

  • I like it lots! I like that it does the real time updating, because I'm one of those obsessive compulsive people who refreshes her screen every ten seconds for half an hour after I write a new entry. And I like the look of the dash--makes things more user friendly.

    Optional is good, too.

I didn't see the truncated entries feature on the tweaked dash, but maybe that's my ineptitude...but it's a good thing, because I was thinking the truncated entries were a bit off-putting...

    ANYWAY. Happy Christmahannukwanzika.

  • Now that I have a choice, I'm fine with it.

    Keep up the good work.

    ~ Lea
(who's really glad her site is no longer in danger of becoming just a feedback log)

  • can i ask a question?

    what's a Dash??

  • definately spiffy beyond belief! when do they come out?

  • Merry Chanukwanzmas

  • I LOVE this for a private page!!

  • The tweaks are much better, thank you. But when are we ever going to be able to comment back to peoples' comments?

  • sounds kool

  • hey my names angela and i just wanted to say hi and yeah so u can visist my site or me and my friends site if u want ok later

                                                                              angela

    http://www.xanga.com/demonzpawn01   or   http://www.xanga.com/sour_chicks_101

  • the dash is really nice. i esp like using it right after i update and put the link to the update in my aim profile... get to see the comments on the spot without waiting for them to tell me they commented and whatnot.

ive had a couple of problems tho...

several times when it went to load up the pictures thumbnails, it didnt load all 3 of the pictures i have on there, instead just showing the grey box. sometimes when i refreshed they loaded up right, other times when i refreshed it kept the grey box.

second... on the settings page... the link to the guestbook... right now its just a standard "yourusername" redirect instead of actually showing my username there. dunno if you're aware of this or not.

other than that... i cant wait til you roll out the next set of updates on it.

have a merry christmas and happy new year everyone!

  • this doesn't have to do with the dash, but more along the lines of html. You know how the xanga homepage has three coloms including the updates? Is it possible to do something similar on a regular xanga. I know there is a code for a double module. But that code only works if the left module is not a custom module. I haven't really seen it (what I call a double custom module) on other sites. The only thing that I would consider double custom module is http://www.xanga.com/sherrys_designs . I've tried contacting her about it, but it hasn't worked out.

I've even tried figuring it out myself through trial and error here: http:///www.xanga.com/xangonian7 and as you see, it hasn't worked out. I was trying to have the colomn of Xangonian_Layouts/Links/Rules to be on the left. The entries in the middle. And the colomn of Now it's your part/Props/Programs to be on the right.

Is it even POSSIBLE for this sorta thing to be on a regular xanga?!
Could you please get back to me as soon as possible before I lose my sanity over this lol!

    Thank you

  • Love it, I want it right now for my Christmas present! Looks very easy to use, I'm real excited and can't wait to use it. Thanks hardworking Xanga people!

  • kool

  • I agree on the color theme idea.
    Psst, make purple an option!
And also, I don't know if this exists or not, or if you're planning on doing it, but I think that a link to the Dashboard should go up with the tabs for Blogs, Metros, Blogrings, etc. that are by the search bar.
Or perhaps, put the link on the main page under the "Return to Your Site" that shows after you log in.
    Either way. Ha.
I love Xanga way too much, thanks guys!

  • gimme gimme gimme, ok not very much in the Christmas season, but it looks awesome

  • maybe you can also put the subscriptions page in the same layout. please do make the layouts simple and can prolly put the dash on top just like the "public post" and "protected post" dashes in the subscriptions page.. or can you just make its layout the same with that of the subscriptions page or the xanga front page? the interface is really abominable.x] nobody would want to stay in a page looking like that, especially when they're online for hours... and for those who dont have any photo uploads, i wish there's an option to get rid of the "Photo Manager" module [like an x mark on the top right of the module] and uh, just that. the layout is really ugly. better to have it in blue and white just like the subs page and feedback page...

  • and Merry Christmas! thanks xanga! i love you! teehee.

  • It would be awesome to have assorted color schemes available for it so that we can choose

  • Thanks for making it optional.

  • Have a very merry Christmas!!!

  • Yes, the tweaks were a good idea.

  • I love it! When's it gonna be up and running?

  • Whoa, this sounds like a pretty sweet idea. I think it'd be a nice feature to be able to customize a background color or something like that for it though. Even though other people wouldn't see it, I'd still like to have that feeling of control and constant variety.
If that's not something that can work, I still think it's great. I like change when it's for the better, but some people hate change, so the opt-out idea is great as well.

    Merry Christmas!

             - Will

  • I have a question - throughout this morning, the title of the Dash page has changed to reflect how many new comments and eprops I've received (it reached 14 comments, 28 eprops at one point). But according to the feedback bars, I have only 8 eprops and 4 comments. Do you know what's going on?

    Thanks!

    J.B. Lewis

  • It's cool....I like the new updated look.

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

  • I checked it out and thought it was a cool idea..........but..................when I went to mine and started reading some have pics. I cannot see my pics from the subscriber's site. So I still have to go to their site if I want to see their pics. Some just have pics and small comments to make you laugh. I enjoy laughing so I need to see the pics.

  • Awesum thanks :D Hay, what about an All Time Best! THAT would rock!

  • perhaps a selection of color schemes? not everyone will like the same thing.

  • love the idea.  merry CHRISTmas!

  • Very Nice, but how about something that tells you who has the most comments and eProps out of your blogring? It would be a cool little contest type thing, and could put some use to getting eprops...and have you guys considered audio blogs? You know, dial the (toll-free, please) number and record your entry and people can come and listen to it...even as a premium feature, it would rock. Also, how about a Currently Browsing where instead of music or books we could put in a web site or even another Xanga page? You guys are doing an AWESOME JOB...keep up the good work....

  • I am so happy to hear that it is optional for Dash, haha! I like Dash actually, but I prefer the current setting~

    Merry Christmas!

  • How can we get that? Do we have to upgrade to premum?

  • I have a question- the title bar for the Xanga Dash says "117 Comments, 218 eProps". What does that mean?

  • oh yeah one other thing; it would be nice if you could see WHAT your personal best is.

  • its really cool

  • id prefer it if it was downloadable or something. I like my current private page. its seems all unpersonal!

  • doesn't work for me on safari, as i posted on the other thread. don't enable it until it works for such a popular web browser as it is amongst students!

  • hey i think its awesome i want it as soon as possible! thanks chris

  • kinda kool, i like the truncated entries bit on the frontpage, but could you have an expand/collapse option instead of or in addition to the preview option. i don't like it when i can only see one at a time. just a thought.
i like the green you've got now, but for those who don't like it, maybe you could have optional color schemes....
as for the feedback comparison, personally, i think it's pointless. i don't care how my eprops etc compares with my other posts or with the rest of xanga. although, i do like seeing the list of who said what, when.

overall, good job, looks great, and i like the "optional" feature =)

    Merry Christmas!
    ~LeahJoy~

  • cool feature. that photo manager thing is tight! but the whole thing seems a little too big and blocky, like it could be condensed. It'd be nice if it fit within 800x600 resolution without having to scroll to the right :)

  • sweet! it sounds and looks awesome guys!
thanks for spicin' it up for us xangans!!!
    <3

  • I'm glad you will be allowing us to keep the existing look, as that dash thing is horrible.

  • I LOVE YOU XANGA!!!!!!!!!!!!! (just don't tell my boyfriend)

Neato idea...not sure if I like the current color scheme, but snazzy. Though, I really like the simplicity of the current system with the white and everything.

  • the navigation on the left looks kind of cheesy, you could do better on that. other than that it looks great!

  • dude that is super tight and i think that you should do that. it would like totaly change how we do everythin

  • The new dash is ok.

Things that I would wish for on Xanga....

    1) A place to make private notes to myself...a notepad!

    2) More options

  • nice

  • I like it.

Thanks for all the work you put into xanga. It's so much fun (and addicting!)

    Melissa

  • Thank you for making this optional! Much appreciated!

  • looks good and all, but i was wondering about something ... for some people, they have put effort into creating the site the way they like it aNd now they can't see it as easily??? that doesn't make sense. but that is just me ...

  • Love it! Keep up the good work!

  • it's awsome, when or how do I get it though??? comment me back on this one! thnxs!

  • i love dash with a firey passion?

  • Niceeee! seems real cooL!

  • So does that mean that you can switch back and forth between the two if you want?

  • Awsome Idea!!

  • sweet!

  • Still not impressed it could be a lot nicer than it is but glad we will have the option of having it or not

  • good~ user friendly~! keep it on~ Support you always!

  • I'm so confused....I'm not computery at all. I have so many questions? Like ok, optional is a good thing, but where do I go to choose these "options" And why is it called a dash board? And what "full preview" are you talking about? Do you mean something kinda like a "print preview" would be, except without the printing part, something like a "post preview" maybe? I like need a user manual or something. Anyway, I'm just so out of the loop; you guys are pretty good at dumming stuff down so that the process is easier to do, but my problem is that you guys are metaphorically giving me the blueprints and materials to make a clock but I come from a civilization that has no standardized concept of time like hours or minutes or seconds nor am I familiar with the English numerical system, so all I see are foreign symbols lined up in a circle. Clocks don't help if you can't tell time. (End of metaphor). Another problem I have (I have lot's of problems) is that from viewing some of the comments from the other Xangans, it's starting to look like there are options I didn't know we had in the first place, let alone be able to give you feedback about changing them. I'm just very much at a loss with all this computer stuff. Help me please. And by the way, so is Xanga like your job or whatever, or is this just a hobby or something, because xanga's free and even when it's not, it's doesn't hardly cost anything, so I would think you guys couldn't be making too much money. And do you guys have any freetime, could I get a xanga tutor or something, seriously? I'm not trying to learn to be a computer programmer, I just want to be able to make the most of my xanga page or at least know how toeven if I choose not to utilize all of the resources that you offer. Sorry this comment (more like a novel) was so long. But say, one of you....whatever you are... I don't know, xanga lords or CEO's or something, say one of you gets really bored and has nothing better to do, please feel free to respond back to me at your convenience. Thanks.

  • i it.

PLEASE IF YOU READ THIS can you send me something that says all the smilies that u can put in here that are different than when u post them in a weblog like : instead of

  • how bout a date search thing lfor entries ike before on the left module?

  • Quick note, the in-dash time is independent of the timezone I selected. It's weird - it says I posted something at 0:11AM, when I'd just posted it at 11:11PM.

It's not earthshattering, but it is a bug.

  • yay I am excited.. when do we get it?

  • Nice idea. I don't mind the colors, since this is just for the user and not public viewing. It does not appear to work in Safari, however, while my private page works fine. Will this dashboard support Mac browsers?

  • Can always give it a try

  • The timestamps of the posts on dash are not being offsetted to the local time zone... :(

  • i like it!!

  • hoping this will get through to the BIG people at Xanga, cos I couldn't figure out any other way of getting in contact with them.

Something that I know a few Xangans want... the ability for anonymous comments on posts to be left.
Some of my friends have been wanting to leave comments on some of my blog entries, but haven't been able to because they have to register to do it. People are lazy, they don't want to have to register just to write a single line comment!

Please, could this be in the works for 2006?

  • cool =)

  • I like it! I think it is going to make things more interesting for us xanga users.

  • I think it's pretty cool.

  • me no like......too confusing....well.... stay ~fReSh~!

                                           ~Sydney!

  • right after you introed Dash, I went and it worked for me, but now everytiem i put in the URL, it just sits there and says it's "loading entries" but it never does...I'll stick to my "old" xanga.

  • Wow very nice. I've been using it for a couple of days now. I bookmrked it for my convenience until its fully operational. This help me out to the extreme for now I dont need to worry about my left module!

Oh and it has a very nice design and I have seen no flaws in it yet.

  • thats sweet how do we get it

  • Suggestion.  You should increase the limit on "other image" sizes for profile pics.  All the animated gif's are like lame AIM icons.  Let's upgrade and try to catch up to Evil MySpacers!

  • Love it, want it, do it.

  • its really neat....I like it. The colors could be changed to something less bright.....:]

and yes...if I had this many comments I would read every one too. :]

  • I'll probably opt out but I do appreciate all the work you put in!!!

  • I love it lots-

    lots-

    lots-

    lots-

    I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-

  • when this is actually implemented, will the comment and eprop records be retrospective? by that I mean, right now it says my record for comments in a day is 3 (the number I got today) instead of whatever my real record might be. will the record only reflect the most comments received after the dash starts?

  • ooh, very nice! can you add the ability to search your own posts? this is the main thing I miss about blogger. how about a dropdown beside the search box with the option of searching all of xanga, your own xanga, or someone else's xanga (with a search code, like friend_xanga: search term). you also had the option of picking how many entries showed up on the dashboard at once, so you could view 20 or all and glance by the title of each entry, but titles are new anyway. you probably don't want to just copy blogger, but those are nice features. the main thing is searching your own posts. keep up the good work!

  • also, feedback and photomanager could be tabs, since they're not as important. feedback could have (new) so you know it's updated, like subs.

  • when you do color schemes can you keep our scheme and layout?

  • This is becoming more and more a geek's paradise

  • Hey waz up????my name is Jarrett sims but everybody calls me blacky!!!!!! I was wondering......if it would be at all possible to put one of those "beta dash" thingies on my site???????? If so....e-mail me back and tell me what kind of information you would need to get it on there such as my password or som'n. THANX!!!!!!!!!

    RIDE OR DIE!!!!!!!

  • yes being optional is the best way, i like it but i dont know! it doesn't have the great feeling of when we get to personalize them ourselves! but i love the photo manager, that kicks ass!

  • will this be only a premium option or will it be a free xanga option too? Simply out of curiosity and my poorness X_X
Over all I think it looks good, but I'm not sure it really surves a purpose, I mean navigation could be easier but it's not as awful as some sites are.

  • this is sweeeeet.
when is it going to go into effect?

  • ..................................mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyybbbbbbbbbeeeeeeeeeeeee.

    dusa 4 ever !!!

  • THANK YOU for making that optional.

  • pretty 1337, but the "no title" thing for all past posts (when titles weren't available) is sorta annoying. could you fix that?

  • I think I'm too oldschool xanga for this...but that's just me

  • i know this is totally off topic but

    http://www.xanga.com/somethingcool2345

they've been spamming up a bunch of sites, leave a weird message on each of them. something like ".exe//.(extension)" and stuff like that. it's on my site and surely you can find it somewhere.

confusing message on the actual site itself though

  • What on earth is going on John? Xangas been nearly Virus Free! Now what? What is this virus going around? Dont know what it is? Check your subscriptions.

  • Yes, it's a lot better now!! =D And it would be even better with different color schemes!!! lol

  • it's pretty... amazing change, guys.
xanga never fails to deliver. :)

  • amazing.

    does everyone get one?

    that would be way cool.

  • I have a few concerns with the new dash:

    1. The dash doesn't reveal a post's formatting, and if you use mostly protected posting (as I do), you can't see what your entries look like in the public preview, either. For those of us who care what our Xanga looks like, this is a frustrating and serious handicap.

    2. The dash navigation has actually added more layers. Rather than simply click on the name of a blogring I've subscribed to, as I can currently do with my blogrings module, now I have to click on the "blogrings" tab and THEN click on the name of the blogring. The goal should be to simplify--not to add steps or complexity. Frankly, this is poor navigational design.

    3. While the color schemes you've added have improved the look of dash, it still isn't very stylish. Skin users, like myself, would much prefer to be able to control the look of our dash, as we could control the look of our private pages. I always coordinated my private and public pages, as the look of my Xanga is as much for my own enjoyment as my users'. Others have asked to simply have a choice of colors in dash; this is not nearly enough. I would want control over fonts, spacing, layout--essentially, the ability to apply my own stylesheet.

I'm sorry to say it, but I really don't see the point of dash. Why not simply add a module to the private pages which would give "best ever" statistics and automatically update with new comments? Why change the whole look of Xanga? Why unnecessarily complicate things?

I am glad that we will still be able to access our private site page, but for how long? Realistically, supporting both is more work for the Xanga team, and I would be seriously disappointed to have to use dash instead.

  • More things I've noticed:

    4. To use preview and see my formatting, I have to go to another page and then come back; I can't even simply click the back button in my browser, I apparently have to click the "Back to Dash" button. (I use an older version of Firefox, so perhaps this is me?) Either way, this is again an unnecessary layer of navigational complexity. Moreover, I don't want to just see a preview of the individual entry, I want to see how the entry looks with the rest of my site--whether the colors match, how the images and placement look with my skin, etc. So far as I can tell thus far, I can't do this in dash.

    5. All of my posts show up as "no title." Many people do not use the recently-added title feature of Xanga. Personally, I don't use it because just typing the title in my post is easier and allows me to apply my own formatting, rather than having Xanga apply title formatting. (I prefer my titles to line up with my posts, which I have indented via skins.) I would suggest (a) making the title text box automatically appear on the new weblog page, rather than having to click "add" and (b) allowing Xangans to completely control the title's appearance and placement via both skins and look-and-feel.

    6. As others have suggested, retrospective feedback would be better.

    7. Perhaps this is because dash is still a trial, but I've paid for premium and there are ads on my dash. One reason I pay for premium is to get rid of ads on both my public and private pages.

    8. The time zone on my dash is EST, not my local time zone. (Perhaps also because it's a trial version?) My dash also continuously reads "last updated less than a minute ago," when my last update was nearly two hours ago.

  • sounds freakin awesome to me!!!

  • god, i love you guys. <3

    courtney<3

  • is the color scheme going to be customizable? that would be cool. maybe more people would use it if they could make it look more like their old private page.

  • DOOO ITTTT!!!!!!

    >please

  • i LOVE this idea! i would like it set for my private homepage!

  • im cunfuzzeld........

so like thats how its gonna apear to us ?

    not the public?

cuz its not really my vibe...

    SUM1 EXPLAIN THIS!!!

  • DEFINITELY add this to all the xanganess

  • yeah its cool but an customizable 1 would be better i like the green 1 but I'm not too crazy about squares. i'm more of a circle guy.

    good job

    david

  • I agree with espoir ... why not just make it a side module and keep everything else the same? I really like the idea of the dash itself, but I don't like the different private page at all.

  • this is great! so much better than before. yeah, customizing my dash color scheme would be nice, also being able to choose what i want on my dash would be nice, like portlets in columns. for example, i'd like to choose between 1-3 columns, where the portlets i choose go...portlets=photo manager box, feedback box, your weblog box, weather box, news box, subs box, blogring box, settings box, etc. also reloading within the same window would be nice instead of opening up new windows for subs, blogring, setting, etc. Thanks for all of your hard work!

  • looks interesting =]

  • Very cool and awesome work on the new dash... really sweet... will it be available to basic members or to the premium members? And also, I reccomend adding something to where we can custom color it and also pick from a list of schemes.. still very cool though, niiice work!

  • how do you get it??

  • it doesn't update automatically every now and then. to get the real "real-time" you have to click something, which gets annoying if you just want to minimize the window and glance at it every now and then. also, the links are arbitrary. some open in the same window and others open in a new window.

  • ooh cool~ it would be cool if dash could be customizable to a certain extent..

  • That's pretty cool-nice job!!

  • Thats pretty cool!

  • i like it!!

  • That shit is awesome

  • hey!! i like the idea !!!!

  • MMM... very nice. i like it...

  • why does xanga rock so hard?

  • thanks for making it optional.  I kinda like my old xanga...*glomps old xanga*

  • always busy :)

  • Totally like the dash. It's so much clearer than having to scroll through all the long posts and much nicer with the controls accessible through the tabs on the left. Very nice! I'm looking forward to the launch of the dash.

  • I think it's good...!!

  • my only complaint is the ad on top.  what's the point of paying for premium and using this dash option when i have to see an ad?

    -ray leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • Could I suggest the new dash include the weekly totals, as the old one did? I found this helpful. I also hope we will be able to use trackers on the new dash.

  • Alright. Some changes. But still...

Users should have the option to make their Xanga Dash to look like their old private Xanga --- the links to Xanga Look and feel, settings, etc. Should be organized into an options link, and so on with all the others; or, if they want to, make it so that the links appear right on the page. I would also like it if the private Xanga Dash were customizable. (Others would also like that too...)

Also, I know some people who like using HTML to customize their private Dash Xanga. Maybe that would benefit those who do.

I don't really know what else to say. Sorry!

  • So how do I get this? Thanks for the great upgrade!

  • I really hate the new color scheme.. I liked the green a lot better.

  • Descent....now all we need is a Real-Time informer.

Dont know what that is? hmm...maybe i should give you the info and HTML for one

  • wow thats very cooooooooolllllllllllllllllllllllllllll:)):))

  • I can't wait for it. O.o

  • Sorry, I'm not sure if anyone else has asked/mentioned this yet, but I noticed the "title" of the dash window will say something like "X Comments, Y eProps" but it doesn't seem to have any correlation to my own Xanga posts. And the numbers change periodically. What are those numbers?

Also, sometimes when I refresh the dash, some of my posts will be highlighted and then fade away. Why does that happen?

Finally, picking our own color scheme = good idea. Thanks for all your work!

  • It is totally awesome, no no wait YOU guys are totally awesome :]

  • today when it came up while i signed in i was like what the heck? but after messing around with it i saw that it pretty much rocks

  • when will you make it an option to use the dash or not!?!?!?

  • I don't like it. You are trying to make Xanga more like blogger. But they are two different things. But as long as the dash is optional, I'm ok with it.

  • When is it going to be up and running so we can use it?

  • it'd be nice if it worked in konqueror instead of just sitting there saying "Loading posts..." forever...

  • It is off da hook FOSH aIght>>>>>>>>>

  • This thing is awesome. However, it would be nice if the "new entry" button would link to your new editor.

Also, are you planning on making new interfaces for look & feel, subscriptions, and all the other things you can edit too?

  • dude, i love it, get it on asap

    (not trying to sound bossy)

    rock on!!

    theskaboss

  • I'm glad its optional because I hate it.  I just like to decorate my private little corner of the net how I like.

  • Concerning the language encoding support, Chinese characters still don't appear correctly in dash.

I do like the new interface though.

  • i like it a lot!

  • Take it off. please?

  • First off, I want to say that I like the color scheme, although customization would be nice.
Customization all around actually, I.E. maybe I don't care if someone made a guest book entry, etc.

The real purpose of this comment is the problem I am having with dash, which I have been using for about a week.
The problem is in it notifiying you off new comments/subscription posts. The feature works just fine, the problem is that they just won't go away. Occasionally the subs have this problem, but more often it is the comments to my posts. They stay marked as new for days even as I check them. The "mark as read" button hasn't done anything either. As a last note, I use Firefox.

Thanks, I love seeing your hard work coming towards improvement. For a number of months I feared that Xanga was starting to stagnate.

  • would u guys consider allowing nonxangian access to comment too? Not everyone's blog is that limited to 16-20ish gurls n boys...ranting about what "who" and "who" said to "who". no offense to others, jez realize from footprints, my viewers are from overseas, n hav no access to comment. thanks.

  • How do you go back to your regular private page?
