  • NEW LEADER ADS

    Tomorrow morning, we’re going live with the new leaderboard ads. We’re going with the overwhelming favorite: Option 2 (Xanga Tabs), which got 45% of all votes  If you’re a classic member, you can preview what your site on our beta server (just swap in your own username):

    We did extensive beta testing to make sure the new ads won’t break any
    layouts.  That’s when Janet noticed that a bunch of sites were
    actually crashing in IE?!  We dug into the issue, and. it turns
    out that all the crashing sites had ad removers on them . 
    I have to admit, we were really bummed to see how many people are using
    ad remover codes.  We fixed things so those codes won’t crash
    sites anymore.   Please don’t use ad removers,
    guys… 

    Thanks again to everyone who provided feedback on the new leaderboards
    earlier.  If you have any more thoughts after seeing the beta
    leaderboards on your actual site, please leave a comment below!

  • Aww man, I liked the barebones option (#1). The other options just make our sites look bulky.

    Oh well, it’s free I guess. I’m with carrera6, that’d be nice if we can at least change the colors of the tabs and ads.

  • the beta looks great only its too close to the top menu, so its possible to click on the ad banner by mistake. But its ok, i’m glad you chose the option 2. Its the best of the three.

  • Sometimes the ads take away from the layouts we have made.  Is there a way we can put the ads on the side of our page (like where the chatter box goes on those who have it), or at the bottom of the page?

  • It’s a little too big. It would be okay if the colors and such were customizable.

    It was at least possible before to “streamline” the banner. As in, I had a code going that moved the banner in such a way as to integrate it with my layout. The banner was … sleek, almost.

    Is there any way to let users choose which ad layout we want? (From the choices you posted before?) That way everyone gets the one that looks best with their own layout, and would actually hinder a global ad-remover script.

  • Yeah, so I’m not complaining, because this is a free site and all…b-b-but it does make the header kinda overwhelming…Now, I get that you have to place ads to pay for things (like that coffee maker behind you and those nice rolls of soft toilet paper that you use), but still…Wouldn’t you say that it is a little large? Or perhaps a bit bulky? I’m just saying…I know, I know, the soft toilet paper is nice and all…But couldn’t you switch to generic, just so the ads were a liiiitttttttle tiny bit smaller?

  • i understand dat u wanted da adz baq 2 our sites buh its jus alot of the times when were looking for a new layout, we have 2 worry about the banner popping up and when we do splash on out xangaz the banner goes right through and it doesn’t go right with the page at all i really appricate 4 wuh u guyz have done 2 make this site better. if the banners were a lil more smaller or go 2 the bottom of the page or even a pop up it’ll be fine

  • hey i think you should make a little like box thing that says Xanga on it and put it up in the top right hand corners of sites cause this ad is really bulky

    or you could make the ad colors customizable so that they go with people’s layouts

  • Not to bother you or anything… but I’ve noticed that the xanga ad has become much bigger and wider than usual. I don’t mean to sound picky, but I liked it when it was a bit smaller.

    Oh and to let you know, coming up with Xanga was pure brilliance. It’s very addicting, well not to me, because of school work and what not. But yes.

    Ah.. I feel like I’m asking too much, but I have to ask. The code to show only 1-5 entries, or the Display one entry, doesn’t work on my xanga. If you go to my xanga you can only see one entry, but that is because I have made all of my entries private. (It took a while) I was hoping if you would know what is wrong… and if you have the time, if you can fix it.

  • Hey umm… In firefox, your ads seem to be like smack in the middle of my xanga site and thats not cool. Plz try to do sumting :( In IE it works fine.

  • Truth be told, I wasn’t a fan of ANY of the options.. that’s just me, though. I would buy Premium if I had the money, but honestly, a 15yr old with no job and parents with very little money, is not likely to pay for such luxuries.

    Personally, I think the leaders are fine… Ads don’t bother me, because at least on here, they are kept to a minimum, and even the leaders being larger than the standard banner ad doesn’t bother me.

    What does bother me is the giant space at the top of my page. When I went to the beta page, it looked fine. When I look at my regular page, it does not. I’m hoping this is just a transitional glitch and will be fixed.

    It’s happening on every page I visit… So.

    Just letting you know this is happening.

  • Grrrr!!! I do not like the new ads. They are intrusive, and on my website they sit to the left… I would much rather have it centered.

  • So, I just noticed it showing up on mine, and it isn’t centered anymore because I have my site settings to “left align”… The banners always used to center though, and it looks really ugly off to the left. Any way to fix that?

  • I think it’s so great that people seem to understand the way a business is run and that you have to do what you have to do in order to bring in revenue….*sarcasm*
    If you don’t like the slightly larger adds, get premium so you don’t have to deal with it. If your parents won’t pay for it, suck it up. The developers run the show, and they were nice enough to ask your opinion and actually take a majority vote. For those of you who are complaining about crashing, you’re the ones with code that is conflicting with the actual hard coding of xanga.

    People make me laugh. If you would understand design it actually looks ok propotionaly to a regular page, and if you wouldn’t get those pieced together xanga layouts from those xangaspam sites then you might have a chance of things working right.

    You know….maybe the ones complaining actually will leave and then xanga won’t be over run by little kids with pointless posts, propwhoring themselves. Myspace is just as bad if not worse with ads, and facebook doesn’t even have an actual journaling feature. All in all xanga is probably one of the best options for journaling and if you don’t like it you can go find something else, stop complaining it’s free.

How do I get each link to start on a new line though? For some reason, some of the links start on a new line and others just run together instead of each link starting on a new line.   • im not sure if there was a race between myspace or xanga at first but the huge ad-banner is the reason i didnt want to go to myspace. have something run along with the scrollbar or something instead of swallow the firstlook of the page.

    and for the premium users complaining, eat it. we are users just as you as. our opinion does mean something. xanga is open to the public, not just the premium. we are complaining about them being so huge (or atleast i am), not the fact that they are on there.

    Honestly, I think you should all be grateful for the people in charge of Xanga. Contrary to popular belief, running a large blogging service is not an easy task. They can’t make everything perfect. If a messed up layout is your ONLY problem… make a friggen’ new one. It’s not THAT big of a deal… like I said, YOU ALL HAD THE CHANCE TO INFLUENCE.

    It’s like politics: I think the only ones who should be allowed to gripe are the ones who actually voted.

    Anyway, I like how things are with the banners at the bottom of the pages, when do the xanga tabs banners start? I have a kitten on my page that chases your mouse when you click on it and when I go to the beta page with my username it doesn’t chase my mouse like it does on my regular xanga. Is this something that will be fixed because it is just beta right now, or will I not be able to use that code any more?

    I do want to say thanks for all the excellent site upgrades lately too! I love my cool text editor even though I don’t have premium. That is the MAIN thing I missed when I had to downgrade my site, but once I get a little extra cash I’m definately gonna upgrade again! 1GB of picture storage o_o awesome!

  • uh, just keep the normal ads. they seem to be quite too large. the buttons take up too much space on my screen. you should just leave them on the main page. if some one needs to see the buttons that bad they could just click “xanga” and then click the tabs.

    My personal preference is only that I be allowed to change the scheme of the advertisement. Since it’s big, white, and blocky, it completely contrasts with the rest of my site. All I’m asking is that I can change it, just as I can change any other part of my “look and feel.”

    It has an unwanted gray-ish color that ruin our layout’s color.
     I mean, it doesn’t even match our own taste and layout. .
     There are people who dislike it. .
     The new banners format has become a bit more disturbing than the previous ads. .
     Do you think it would be much better and creative if you lend us an option to change the gray-ish border around the ad? .
     If you look in Xanga skin preview selection, you’ll notice the banner’s gray border is actually distracting the layout.

    If you will take my minor suggestion, I would deeply appreciate even more and support it. It’s going to benefit the entire Xanga designers, us, and our taste too!
     This comment might make you think that the banner format is really horrible to me.
      To be honest, it’s a creative neat idea! .

  • Sorry about this post but im really picky about my xanga and stuff… personally… i think barebones would make peoples xanga look much better… Xanga tabs is nice alone, but barebones fits in with most peoples xangas… sorry that i am using an ad removal… i just used it because the xanga tabs ads were COMPLETELY ruining my xanga which i want to look good… Most people want good-looking xangas… am i right here??  so for good-looking xangas heres my advice…

    -Switch ads to barebones because barebones are sleek and more simple and less bulky for peoples xangas… they make the xanga look nicer!!

    - put the ads on the bottom of the xanga… when you go to a xanga.. some people want those nice banners that people spend a lot of time on to make and people want those banners at the top so when u go to a xanga u see a nice banner but then it gets cut off at the bottom b/c of the xanga ads!!!

    no one cares about the xanga “sections” … they only care about where their friends are at, and the links to those places are already on their friends’ xangas. besides… metros, blogrings, etc. are too bloated from the root perspective (as in, if you start at the top and work your way into the directories)… there’s too much crap to get lost in to care about them as a whole.

    In brief, the addition of the Xanga Tabs to every top-banner ad is not a worthwhile venture and only adds to the clutter!!!

    quite frankly, if my foundation wasn’t so rooted in Xanga, I’d up and move to Blogger. Maybe one of these days, when I have enough time, I’ll transfer all of my entries over… in fact, I did this once, but got lazy and stopped. (http://ki85squared.blogspot.com/) My main audience comes in through Xanga, as reported by my stats counter… I don’t want to risk loss of audience either.

    Those who use ad-removers deserve to crash. They are kind of stealing. And I do agree it is a bit big and all but if it helps Xanga then I don’t really care. I have xanga set as my home page, and I would like to just be able to type in my screen name and tab to the password instead of having to click in the screen name field. Can you not make it to where that is the default field (i.e when going to google, the cursor is already blinking and ready to be typed in when the site pops up)?

  • Yeah, the new leaderboards aren’t too bad. So far I haven’t noticed any problems with them screwing up skins. Thank you for avoiding pop ups, pop unders, and spyware! We all appreciate it!

  • I am very disapointed at how the shrunken version of my profile pic looks. It is all blotchy. The 170×170 (34.4kb) version looks excellent and is a small size. The 60×60 (6.35kb) pixel version I made myself looks great too. Unfortunatly the xanga algorithm for resizing image appears to be terrible.

    It’s too bad I can’t upload my 60×60 version for the comment images because it looks so much better what is automatically generated by Xanga.

  • Wow, after so many comments and almost a month, I don’t know if this comment will be noticed or not.  I might as well give it a shot.

    I noticed the banner (or rather, leaderboard now) had changed because it’s wider than the one before.  I designed my current layout before this so it doesn’t look so good at the top.  My question to use is if it would be possible to change the width (offer users the ability to modify the style of the ad at the top)?  If not (which I’m expecting), my second question would be if there’s a way I could change the border colour of the leaderboard, just so it won’t blend so much with my layout background.

    I hope that I get an answer, but if not, I understand completely.  Not that this statement matters, because it might never be read!

    i was unable to edit my xanga skin. they kept prompting for my userID and password in order to access.   • Hi John, I just popped in to tell you that Xanga and it’s machinery are and have been working very well for me.  All glitches seem to be under control.

    Every day that I come in to play or to write I am amazed at your software and all of you and what you have done to and for this community.  I get tired and aggravated at times not at the workings of xanga but at my own shortcomings and lack of stamina as I am not the bloggingest blogger you have and never will be.  But, I know quality when I see it and hard work when I see it and all of you in this group are hard workers and are darn well shooting for quality.  You have done a great job.  I wish I were younger and smarter.  I would have loved to have had the opportunity to work in the medium and with a group like yours.

    I hope you don’t mind my popping in to tell you.  I thought you might like a compliment just because I felt like it.

    An idea for you if you care for one.  A spell check on the comment box or the ability to use our editors to write the comments so we could spell check them.

    Was almost gone from here then remembered there is one issue I wanted to ask about.  I purchased two lifetime accounts for my friend’s sites and posted memorials there (my friend  from England who died).  I paid for LordPineapple and The Clowne from Clown.  I have not received any word from Xanga that they were recognized as Lifetime Paid (my email address is plugged into both of them and is a working email address).  I paid for them both via Visa on this date, October 8, 2005.  Any information on that would be appreciated.

  • Just wondering. Did you help make Xanga? Dont you feel bad that this site used to be so popular and everyone left it because myspace is so much more popular? Does that get you mad. A lot of people say xanga is gay. But I still like it. Even though I dont ever update my xanga anymore.

    I’ve been a premium member for over 2 years now.  I don’t mind paying the fee to have pictures/rich text, but now everyone has it?  What am I paying for?  Also, why is there a limit on my pictures per month now?  I feel like I should almost cancel my premium status.  Also, if we delete our photo manager pics, is that just backup storage or does it delete the pics off the site completely?  THANKS FOR YOUR TIME!

  • your damn blinking ads screw up my site, clash with my colors, and make my layouts look hideous. they’re incredibly irritating and slow down page load time. especially on my home site which has alot of codes running on it. if all of us wanted the ‘xanga tabs’ on our sites, we would’ve created a code to stick them there. my site is a piece of art, not your own personal billboard.

  • Hey john, just as a suggestion for xanga —

    could you make it so that images are visible in the subscriptions preview (so that you don’t have to visit a user’s xanga to see them)? It’s just that people put emoticons into their entries, and you can’t see them unless you actually go there.

  • Theres an exodus worm about. It seeminly deletes all entries and whatnnot. Please tell the Xangans of this solution I came up with.

    Delete people you’ve subscribed to that has been infected. Log into safe mode, click “Blog entries” and delete the entries with long lines of code in it. That solves the problem.
