  • NEW BLOGRING FEATURES


    It’s been 1,256 days since we launched blogrings (wow, that’s a big number).   That whole time, we’ve been wanting to add a much-needed feature: allowing leaders to delete unruly or abusive members.


    Well, that day has finally come: you can finally delete abusive members with a single click.  In addition, you can use our new Member Approval feature to stop unruly members from just joining the blogring again.  This feature gives you a chance to approve new blogring members before they can join.  The combination of Member Deletion and Member Approval should make it a lot easier to manage your blogring.


    You don’t have to turn on Member Approval if you don’t want to!  And if this all sounds like too much responsibility, we’re adding a new Transfer Leadership feature as well.  To see these features in action, just visit any blogring that you’ve joined (or lead).  If you really want to dig in, feel free to visit our revised Blogrings FAQ here:

(e.g. fixing the default Eastern time zone setting for the calendar tag; repeat of entries when you click next 5 as a result, enabling of comments without the option for eprops by the owner; more options such as renaming or subfolders in Picture Files; more extensive blocking option other than just preventing a subscription; unveiling of top sites & blogrings in Top 50; search feature within individual site; and so forth)

  • yay! so now the gurl that has hated me since 4th grade b/c i wouldn’t let her push me around, can block me from joining a school/sporting/college (etc) blogring cuz she hates me and sees me as a threat to her power over me!! ALRIGHT!

    please note the sarcasm. although, i do agree it is a great idea. but there are ppl out there that will take advantage of that power…and that’s what the openin sentences was to give off…but other than that, it’s a good idea.

  • I have one small problem to mention with this new feature: What if the blogring leader is just being a d*ck and kicking people out just for the hell of it? I mean, yes, he/she may be the ring leader, but what if its for a large/general blogring, such as for a university or ethnic group?

    Better yet, what if the blogring member doesn’t even log on anymore? This becomes a big problem if he/she has turned on member approval already prior to discontinued usage.

  • :) . I think it’s a great idea to have this feature, because there are blogrings that friends create just for their friends, and there’s the possibility that these friends don’t want people they don’t know joining their blogring.  Good job :D .

  • But why? The single member hasn’t really got an effect IN the blog ring, but in everybody’s own little blog. A blog ring is far from a comunity, it will still be possible to find other bloggers through blog rings even if you can’t join ‘em, right?

  • I am thrilled the new features are finally added to the attributes of blog rings.  I am however finding your instructions for removal and approval of members is not as stated.  I have been able to turn off the automatic approval. 

    Your directions for management:    Click on “Manage Members”, and you should see a list of all the members in your blogring.  Under each member name is a link labeled “Remove”. 

    But, what I see is this:

  • One other thing, being able to transfer leadership is an absolutely wonderful feature.  Fantastic.

  • What might also be cool is if you post something that’s really on point for that blog you could notify everyone in the ring. Of course, that could be abused too but maybe that’s where the ringleader (heh) can step in and approve.

    Because if I’m the People Who Love XYZ ring and write something about XYZ I’d want everyone to know. Just a thought.

  • These features are awesome.  We could have used them about a year ago.  I still suggest that you somehow implement a way for a leaderless blogring to get a new leader.  We need to delete a ring and we can’t now because it’s totally leaderless.

  • Thank you very much for this feature.  I’ve already taken advantage of the new feature by removing a few hostile and inappropriate members from the dominating blogring of my school (note…the hostile members do not attend the school).  It is now much more appropriate.  Much appreciated.

  • This sounds like a very useful feature. Glad to see it. I think it will help, too, where people join and their site goes lapse – that especially happens in the cancer blogrings.

    On a separate note, I’ve got a problem with someone who I keep blocking from my site and they just keep signing on with a different Xanga account and coming back in. What can I do about this? This person is my husband’s ex-wife. She sweeps in, makes nasty comments, and then comes back as someone else when I block her.

  • By the way.. I second mistressbatty’s opinion.  Some blogs are reallie racist.  Being proud of one’s own race/religion is not-so-bad.  But to belittle/insult others’ race/religion.. tt’s just too much!   Wat a shame tt Xanga is being used to promote these undesirable beliefs.

  • This is good and all, but I think a lot peolpe are wondering if there is a way to post music that are saved in their harddrive and not from a secondary site. I mean lets say you have a favorite song on saved up on your computer  but you can’t upload it cause it does not have an URL. Mabye this is something you guys could work on next.

  • I have a question. HOW do you become an abusive blogring user? What is the definition of that title? Because I really don’t see a point to blogrings except for connecting people with the same interests.. and it’s not really CONNECTING them.. because usually people just join blogrings for joining sake.. or start up a blogring to show how many friends they have. Most times people never talk to other people that are on the same blogring, and most times nobody expects it to happen anyway. So back to the point..

    Please educate me on how I can possibly be an abusive member. Not because I want to be one or anything.. hehe..he.. no .. Just to see if it’s even possible.

  • John, I’m really disappointed. I have written TWO e-mails to the security people on xanga, trying to get them to address my site problem, but I have gotten absolutely no reply.
    The password to my xanga site was changed and I am unable to get back into it. I started a new screen name immediately, so I would not be xanga deprived, and wrote an e-mail to xanga security. A few days later I wrote again. This all started July 28th and I have been on vacation for most of the past month and unable to address the issue further.
    If you cannot tell me what my password has been changed to, due to security, please REMOVE the site. The person who abused my password changed both my e-mail and AIM password (which I have since sorted out), and I don’t like them having access to my personal thoughts. Most of my entries were “protected” so I cannot read them.
    For my own privacy I won’t disclose the other screen name, but please contact me (soon!) through this screen name or I will be writing you again.

      I have an idea for you guys to do.. you know the protected post stuff? You should have a block list (I know you already have one on there.) that blocks a person from actually READING you entries? Maybe by SN or IP? Sound like an idea?

  • That’s a great idea about getting rid of members that don’t belong.

    I wanted to second the ocmment that there are too many blogring names. You can’t even put them in alphabetical order because people use so many symbols to get their blogring name to the top. Plus, most of them are subcategorized really badly or just not subcategorized enough to browse through the list of names.

    However, Xanga IS popular for its many perks!! Keep up the great work!!!!

  • Hey … I noticed some of my deleted entries are saved to the my xanga archive (the archive you can save on a local computer). Any idea why that is happenning? It’s a bit annoying, since I did want them deleted everywhere.

  • Suggestion… you should make an option to organize the people who subscribe to you by recently updated or alphabetic. That way you can see who subscribes to you and is still active.

  • i have a suggestion for eprops:
    instead of keeping eprops for nothing, xanga should have special features that you can buy with eprops for your site.
    such as:
    layouts
    use of different fonts for weblog entries
    etc.

  • Im having trouble with my bandwith on my xanga.  The public preview that everyone see’s is fine, but when I try to go into my private xanga…its all back to my old layout and I can’t get into my Look and Feel Page to change anything because of the exceeded bandwith or something.  Please help if you can.  I didn’t see anything on the front page about emailing someone else for help.

  • Hello! I had some question… some time ago I had to change blog so I left the blogrings on my original journal to join them back on my new one. Even the one I had created. Later on, I rejoined it on my old journal and it seemed I could manage it as before but sometime after that (I guess it happened last time to made changes) I wasnt able to do so anymore. Sooo… my questions are why did it happen, will I be able to regain my ‘leadership’ sometime and will we be able to tranphert leadership in the future?   • Hey! I think it’s great that you guys give Xangans a free trail of Xanga premium when they are new to Xanga, but I think that you guys should let people know that they are getting a free trail or at least ask them if they would like a free trial.

    Why?You may ask, and the reason is because I have been given a free trial without knowing and my site got messed up since all this ‘free trial’ thing began. I had placed my own skin on my site but the skin didn’t work since I didn’t have Xanga premium, now it does and it messed up my site. I fixed the problem but it took me awhile to fix it.

    I do understand that it was sort of my fault for leaving the skin there even though it didn’t work but I do think that someone should be asked if they would like the trial. The trial is quite helpful and I love it but I still don’t like the fact that it does things that we wouldn’t like to be done. It’s like someone coming to your house remodeling everything and putting their own thing or theme in your house. Not many people like change.

    Hopefully you guys can keep this in mind and work out a way to do this. I’m not hating on Xanga premium and I don’t want mine removed but I would like to be warned!! That’s all I gotta say

  • Hey – I would like to know what amount of space is available in a free weblog on Xanga – what are the guarantees that previous posts will not be deleted? Is it mandatory to make all posts public, in order to use the blog and for the posts not to be deleted, or can I just keep them all private?     But what about a blogring you started, then your membership lasped for one day because of credit card issues, and you were removed from the blogring? Then had to rejoin and apparently lost “leadership”?
    [its sort of sad to see your baby go away... ya know?]

  • Hey there, I don’t know where else to go with these, so here are some suggestions.

    1.  Users be allowed to add themselves to their own protected lists so that they can see the Protected version of their sites when they look at the Public version.  They can always take themselves off if they’d rather not.

    2.  An option be created for Xanga to create a .txt or other very basic transcript of all posts made, comments excluded.  Users can then copy/paste it onto their HDD if they want to back them up or just for their own memories.

          This is Lilminyun.Or Minyun,now.The user known as Funnylink hacked my site and changed a whole bunch a stuff.including my password.He changed the passwords to my AIM screename,my xanga site,and my e-mail.I know you have no reason to believe me so I don’t expect you to just give me my password on my new site so I can do something about all this but do you know of anything else I can do so that I can get my site back????I would greatly appreciate it,thanks!!!

    i think you should really really make it so that a leader can regain leadership status though….someone made me “leave” the blogring i made as hartnettgrl (blogring “TAS 2006″) and now nobody is the leader….i don’t want to make another similar blogring because it took a long time to get all members to join and will take even longer to get everyone to leave….there’s over 100 members in that blogring…help!

  • hi, do you know why i have trouble posting comments all of a sudden?  this nevre happened to me before but in the past month, whenever i write a comment that goes beyond the size of the comment box, in which case the scroll bar will appear, that comment will never submit.  is there something going on with xanga or is it my web browsers?  I can’t submit on Internet Explorer or Firefox or Mozilla.

  •     This is going to sound complainy- but I thought you should know none-the-less. I recieved an e-props from a lastmeasure_homiez claiming that I was chosen to recieve Xanga Premium free because of some updates. Foolishly, I assumed that he – or she – was part of the xanga crew. I clicked the link, as you can imagine. I don’t believe it’s a virus, but It is vexing when more than 11 pop ups parade across your screen. I’m sure there would have been more, but I shut down my computer.

  • first of all, like many others before me, i received a deleted comment message. i would like to know what it was.

    i think you should leave the deleting of comment on our sites up to us.

    secondly. there is a site called “Inmemoryofcraigandtyler” which was used as an emotional outlet for our community after the deaths of two of our close friends. it was open to everyone to sign in and leave their own posts as they felt necessary. the site had the password available so anyone could access it as a user. the password was originally “pass”

    recently someone has taken the page down. noone can access it and we are devastated. it contained over 3 months of entries from the date of the accident when it was created until present.

    if there is anything you can do to make this site available again, please let me know.

  • Hello – You guys need a ‘suggestion’ button on the ‘contact us’ page. My suggestion actually has to do with blogrings – it would be very cool if I could see all the members in common of any two blogrings… say for example, the “over 30″ blogring and the “Freethinkers” blogring, so that I could find all the people who are on both “Over 30 + Freethinkers” . I’d find that very helpful.

  • Who do I tell about someone doing vulgar things on xanga?  Do I tell you?  Let me explain, when I got onto my xanga site this morning there was a comment from someone named Bloody_Ressurection.  They said they liked my site and wanted me to come visit theirs.  They seemed nice enough so I did, but when I clicked on the link they gave me to go to their site my computer was bombarded with nasty pornographic pictures and at first I couldn’t get rid of them.  After a while I was able to though.  This makes me want to stop using xanga altogether.  I know you have a lot of comments and stuff, but when you get the chance please tell me what it is I’m supposed to do.  Thanks.

    it would be nice if there could be monitors along with the blogring leader — or can there be more than one leader.

    right now, it sounds as if a person’s only choice is to transfer leadership to another person, not appoint them as co-leader or a monitor under them.

    anyway, xanga is awesome. its a cool concept and lots of ppl love it, including myself.

    this comment has been left on my xanga by one called “a_jew_is_you”, and from visting his site and reading the guestbook, i can tell that he has left is on many other xangas as well. it was graphic, vile, and disgusting. also, when i was linked to the user’s xanga homepage, i was automatically redirected to an adult humor page, which i’m sure none of the parent’s of younger random xangans would want.

    i hope you are someone that can deal with this accordingly.

  • Xanga doesn’t have an option of how to e-mail you guys unless you’re from a business or something along those lines. So I guess I will have to post my idea/suggestion here. :)

    A lot of people do ‘xanga cleanouts’ in which they go through and delete a lot of their old posts. Not only does this keep their xanga a little neater, but it saves on room for the xanga.com server.

    Well, it gets tedious after awhile of having to edit each entry and delete them.

    Is there a possibility for any time in the future for an easier way to do a clean out? It would be GREATLY appreciated if this could happen.

  • I think this is a great step foward.  However, what about the users out there that are completely disregarding the user agreement?  If you don’t start enforcing it, you may start losing paying members.  I’ve seen more than a few complaints.

I have been workin on a site for a while and i have compiled several layouts for fellow xanga mebers to use. These layouts are created by myself and fellow xanga members. My dream of this site is for it to go mainsteam and be known to xanga members so they will have the opertunity to have access to it by knowledge of it. If you could be so kind as to help me in this i would be more then greatful.

  • a really great feature is to have an option like the protected list, but not just for 10 people, but for as many people as you want. so you dont have to cut down to who gets to read your protected posts…i would like all the people on my subscription list to read my protected posts, just so i know that only they are reading it. not some random stranger that got my link somewhere. but yeah, thats my two cents.

  • come on, john. your userbase is a bunch of barely-computer literate morons. they don’t know what to make of this, and silence from the leadership is only going to fuck things up worse for them as they go about making moronic assumptions.

    This is obvious because people are calling it a “virus”. If joe_x’s words are true, it is a phishing attempt. If not, it is some random brute-forcing and/or an exploit on *your* server.

    Regardless, the last entry you’ve made is from over a month ago. Personally, I don’t care, because I can just sit and laugh and go back to hosting things on a linux box running apache.
    But other people, they do care. And you should level with them as to what is going on.

    And anyone who can’t figure out to click “stop” before the meta-refresh from the javascript dialog box: your site loads fully before the other site shows up. what you have to do is simply hit “stop” before the other page loads.

    Give the dumbasses the internet, and you’ll have to clean up the fishing areas for the rest of your life.

  • ok…so problem…There is someone who has a website and is posing as someone who does not have a xanga site.  The person being impersonated does not like the fact that they are doing it so…. is this illegal and if so…TAKE DOWN THE SITE.  it’s  MatthewArnoldThiessen .  I believe they are an obsessed fan and they are screwing with a lot of people.  Let me know.  Thank you so much!

  • I hear many people saying xanga “sucks”. Well, sometimes I feel that too. Xanga has many features but people have been complaining:
    - you have to be a xanga memeber to post a comment on a site
    - unless you have the key word to search a blogring, you can never find people of common interests.
    - there are many blogrings that are very similar to each other.

    and so on… 
    Blog-city (http://www.blog-city.com) is one of many blog communities people could join. Their design and features are fantastic. Yes, they have few problems of their own but I believe there are few things you guys could learn from other blog communities. You guys could have the categories out there for people to join, and then we could get to know people of same interests! I hope you guys could make this blog community a lot better. I like xanga. it’s nice, but there are so much you could inhance on.

    I noticed that when i press “read your subscriptions” from my site….i get a random pop-up advertising some sort of free web space or something.  it asks to change my homepage and never takes me to my subscriptions.  i think it’s been hacked somehow.  you might wanna look into this.  I’m sure other sites have been hit too.
