TRY OUT OUR BETA XTOOLS
The new xTools is in beta! You can see for yourself here:
In addition to the smileys and other features we mentioned earlier, you may notice that xtools is no longer a popup! With all these popup blockers out there (including the Google Toolbar), our beloved xTools is getting blocked from use! So, it's no longer a popup. This has saddened all of us at Xanga Headquarters... it is the passing of an era.
And yet, the dawn of a new one! We have much better support for Safari and Mozilla, and a complete xtools FAQ. And also... a whole new cast o' characters of Xanga Smileys:
This new xTools is in beta, so you'll only be able to access it through the beta URL above. Let us know any thoughts or feedback (or heaven forbid, bugs) in the comments below. As we iron out the beta issues that come up, we'll let you know... and hopefully, launch this to everyone soon!

Fabbioso! Was just on my beta site (I think lol) - and saw the new xtools look and feel - GREAT JOB you guys - loved it loved it. Of course we will now have to rewrite our scripts to change them to smileys that match our site - but you've made it that much easier for us hehe. GREAT job and the new look and feel of xtools is awesome. Nice work you guys!!!
P.S. yes that stinks that we're losing the ability to have it pop up - it's nice listening to the music I choose while writing my blog - but you're right - if technology is advancing (aka stopping all blockups) - then you must change the proggy as well. Question though - isn't it up to the user, using a block up stopper, to choose which site he/she wants the pop ups blocked from? I know I have those options via IE and AOL (2 different stoppers).

I love the pop-up-ness though!!!! Live journal stole me from d-land because they popped up and you guys stole me from there because I didn't have to close it everytime I needed to run things on my fairly ancient computer . .

Looks nice but I LIKED that the pop-up feature. When I launch x-tools I hold down the "Ctrl" key to bypass the browser's blocker. (IE 6, Win 2000)
Have no idea what using beta is and I work with simple Xanga....would love the new features...how do I get it to my site?

I'm shocked. No wait, I'm stunned.
it works okay. i did have an instance of the xTools freezing when i was trying to use the color palette. the palette itself gives more choices, i like that the best of the new features.
while changing font faces and sizes, i had to go back several times and keep re-selecting my choices from the dropdown, because it didn't look like the changes i made were showing up... at the end i ended up just doing it manually by inputting the HTML myself. the paragraph/heading dropdown menu, i didn't find very useful, but only because i'm just used to changing the font size and/or colors and indentations individually.
my xangazon settings do not seem to apply to the beta version....(yet?) i want the thumbnail pictures of my music or video, as well as the bold link to show.... but that's not working.
the smiley's are great. it's a lot better than using a Smiley Script.

Hey, I know probably a million other people have asked this, but, is there a way to let protected posts be readable to everyone in xanga, and NOT the outside world? Just so we don't have to type everyone's name in the protected posts list.

How's this for funny? I can get the beta xTools to work just fine in Mozilla (and thank you so much for the improvements... Goodbye IE!), but I keep getting an error message when I try to load the beta xTools in IE. (Like I said, goodbye IE!)
I prefer the pop-up xTools myself, but it's no big deal one way or the other. However, if you are going to kill the pop-up xTools for the reason you state, don't you think you should kill the pop-ups that come from using xTools (e.g. Select Fill Color, Select Border Color, etc.)?

What is the glitch that makes some paragraphs in my posts highlighted in grey even though I never told it to do that? Can you make it go away please? I don't like grey highlight, I think it's satanic.
I think its great, some things I did notice, and it may just be me
-the fonts: they're wonderful but in no order, and some are repeated twice, like comic sans
-colors: I love having more options and shades, but I couldn't view all the colors... like the box wasn't big enough, and had no scroll down option.

I'm running ancient Windows 98 (in case that might be a problem) and every time I click on the URL for the beta it opens up my private site in a new window, and that's it!

More fonts and more colors - vey nice. But the 'pop-up blocker' alibi doesn't hold water. My Google pop-up blocker does not block the old x-tools. Or are you just anticipating that Google/Blogger will find a way to do so?

Ah, I see. You meant the xTools as initiated from the browser's toolbar--not the in-page link. Yes, Google does block that. But how strange that Google doesn't block its own BlogThis! pop-up

i keep getting that. it looked like the thing that sugarspun had, and you just reboot a server. umm, please make it so i can do all the cool stuff.
The beta works pretty good, but it froze when I was using it. Luckily, I was able to copy and paste it before, because it just kept trying to save, but never stopped. Finally I had to just close the screen. Also, it would be helpful if the font were in alphabetical order. The align buttons don’t always work, and also when you change the font and size it doesn’t always work. When you click on color, some colors don’t show on the screen. It is too long…. Otherwise, it worked wonderful! I love that xTools is no longer a popup. I never had problems with my popup blocker blocking it, but now I can add more smileys from smiley central

John - why not let the users decide whether or not they want a popup with some kind of account setting?
Or maybe if you can get a list of the most popular popup blockers, you could make a short FAQ on how to configure the blocker to allow xTools. I'm sure you could find some volunteers to assist with that!

Why not make the choice of editor an option in the settings? If pop-ups are not a problem on our browser for the editing console, it really is nice sometimes to have the page right there behind.

The color box needs a scroll bar so you scroll down into the purples. Right now, the color box only gives me access to about 70% of your available colors.

When using the "Currently Playing" option on the beta xTools, I found that the album picture or the Track title did not show up, only a hyperlink of the album title.
But other than that, i see no problems. Looking good!

Love the new fonts, colours and smilies. I do have a few niggles though:
1. The main input field and the colours pop-up could do with scrollbars.
2. I made a post using the new font "Chiller", and while it looks normal on my comments (and private) pages, the lines are a bit crushed together when the same post is viewed from the front page, where I have a skin. If it's any help to you, click here to see the way it looks on the comments page, and here to see how it looks on the public site with the skin.
3. I sometimes have to select a font name or font size more than once for that choice to be applied.

It worked for me, and the most noticeable novelty was that I could actually post pics. For the first time in weeks, the images uploaded AND appeared in the xTools box without having to write in the "img" HTML. Four out of the five pics I posted actually did that on the first try. The fifth one uploaded but did not appear (got a "page can't be displayed message when the upload box vanished) until I tried again, this time the "image already uploaded" option. It worked.
Maybe others need all those smileys, etc. I just want something that works as advertised.

Not sure if this is a bug, but when I add an album to my "currently playing" option on the beta mode, it doesn't show the album cover like it used to. I checked my Xangazon settings and they're still set to "Bold!" but it's not reflected in the blog. Other than that, cool
Also.. it might just be me, but what's the point of having a setting to make blogs visible to "everyone who has a Xanga site but not the rest of the world"? What's to stop whomever you're trying to stop reading those blogs just signing up to Xanga?

yo, i have a problem. i use several tables in my blogs and give them a class.

this new xTools thing removes all class attibutes that I add in to tables/images/what not once I uncheck Edit HTML. The only way to get those class attributes to work is to Edit HTML again and input each one then submit. Can you fix that please?

Great work guys. The first time using it , it crashed IE 6.0 , but it dosen't take must to do that , LOL . I'll continue to use it in beta, and report any problems that occur.
I am not screaming. Just trying to make some constructive feedback to you admist all the cheering and joyful comments. But here's one tiny suggestion. YOU NEED TO HAVE SOME WAY OF SELECTING WHETHER YOU WANT TO POST THE ENTRY AS "WEBLOG, REVIEW, OR EVENTS".
My other question is: Under the pop-up weblog entry window, why do we have the "publish to:" pull-down menu? Is it there because some of us may have more than one xanga webpage and can publish our entry to anyone we choose?

I'm loving the xtools! I just have two questions. Is this going to work for Mac computers after it leaves the Beta stage? Because that would rock my socks off! Also, I did not have the option to change the font or the font color, but I could change the background color and add a border. Is that another Mac-related problem?

well not sure if it's just my computer but if it's on anyone else's here's a bug for you, when after you select "playing, reading, watching" after I choose whatever it is , it doesn't show a picture with your selection. Other than that, the new setup is cool, okie bye bye

I like this new xtools, and I was just wondering if these features would bleed over into other aspects of xanga--like the look & feel category? I am loving the color pallette, and the expanded fonts, but you can't permanently encorporate it into your page yet (unless you know html code).

The screen is very small in Netcaptor, a bit like the Classic one
Small criticism cos no one much uses NetCaptor. But I like it. I like Xanga too so I'll work on a weeny screen

I had encountered a bug after I added 'Currently Reading' in my entry using beta xTool.
When I clicked the name of book, a webpage titled 'Invalid attempt to read when no data is present:

I do have a problem, though. My background images never show up unless I go to my beta site, and then they're there when I switch back to my regular site (regardless of which one I do "look and feel" on). The ones I'm trying to use are small GIFs, uploaded to a hotlinking-compatible server (Netscape). Help?

Love all the new colours - but I can't see the ones at the bottom - is there a way to have a scroll bar on side? Also, it would be nice if all these colours were accessible for the "look and feel" functions. With the fonts, it would be nice if each font name also showed a sample. It takes forever to check them all out and them remember the nice ones! Keep up the good work, guys!

xTools BETA IS VERY NICE.. However... may the font list be alphabetized? I have fonts scattered and are harder to find. Maybe in the future can the picture-adding feature be somewhat more tightly integrated. OVERALL it is very nice and if i could i'd kiss you guys.

I just love how it prompts before doing anything that would lose text on the box. Like when you accidentally click "XTools not working" it pops up asking for confirm. Normally I hate popup boxes, but you guys definatly used them wisely.

And I noticed that your scroll bar is somewhat off the screen... Other then that, it looks great and it also runs faster on this old Windows95 computer of mine.

I haven't read anyone else's comments, so I hope I'm not reiiterating (although I doubt you read this far down the comments list anyway...!).
The beta of the new xTools looks great. It does exactly what people wanted it to: support more features, offer editing in both rich and plain text, and best of all, a CONFIRMATION BOX when we try to navigate away from the page!
I do have a question that perhaps you could address: xTools loaded all of my computer's fonts as options. Does this mean Xanga is somehow offering users support for all fonts? Or is it one of those "you're-letting-us-choose-cool-awesome-fonts-but-other-users-still-can't-see-'em" deals?

1) when i choose border color and background color on Safari, the background and border don't change in the xTools edit window. they appear in my blog when i hit submit though.
2) ditto on the xangazon settings not being used as booyahman mentioned.
WOO YAY for the new BETA! It rocks and everything! Love all the new smilies, love the easy pic/link/symbol format.
And this is not new, but I love the reading/watching/playing feature!

Um... if I use the beta interface to type in Traditional Taiwanese, it will not display properly on my web. Instead, what I had entered will be changed from the original Big-5 code into Simplified Chinese.
Is it possible to fix the input code problem on beta?
The same problem does not occur if I type in the same web-log entry via the old xTools.
I recently created my Xanga site and tried out the beta xTools with my Premium trial, but when I finished typing up my entry and clicked "submit", nothing happened. I tried clicking it three times to no avail, so I finally just ended up posting the entry with the old xTools. Is this problem just because of my computer, could it be a bug?

I'm having a lot of problems using this beta version - my computer often freezes, and the font I see in the X-tools is often different in size or style from what appears when I hit 'submit'. It looks ok in the x-tools but is completely screwed up on my page. I go back to fix it but it doesn't solve the problem.

I ran into another tiny problem... I can't use the Xangazon feature in the beta test... It tells me there's an error in the application, but if I go to the old pop-up one, Xangazon works fine. Don't know if you need to know this but I have Windows XP and IE 6.0...

Just tried to edit rather than create a post with the new beta tools. Clicked on pic and I get 'are you sure you want to navigate away from this page'. When I tried to link to a pic I just got the same screen endlessly. I use NetCaptor but it was always fine apart from not taking the x-link thing.

I think the idea is great but I don't think it works (as yet) or at least not for me. I'm using IE and Windows ME (old old old).
1) The little composing screen is just too small, its the same size as the classic one and you can't see a whole pic at once.
2) Wow all the fonts!!! Where???? I have the same fonts as ever.
3) The whole new entry page was just that a whole page, it was great. This is just squashed into the middle third of the screen.
I'm glad its in beta so you might change it, but right now I really hate it. I do like to see a bit more than what amounts to only double the size of this little comment screen.
If you are going to roll out with it, PLEASE keep the 'old' alternative.

I had to change a few features in my browser to allow the xTools to pop-up, but since that is being retired, I'll see if I can get used to the new version.
Ok, I love the format of the new x-tools (though I do like the pop-up version better)... but the first time I tried it, it crashed IE when I went to spell-check and I lost my post. Blah.
yeah, the Spell Check freezes and then you lose everything. And when you save something so you don't lose it, it posts it to your site at private and closes your window, which is really really annoying. I thought I had lost my post for the second time that night. So if you can fix those two annoyances, I'm all for it. I love the fonts and the smilies!

Normally, I am fairly happy with Xanga. This week, I am not.
Two reasons.
First reason. I write a comment, click Submit, and it refreshes and acts like it posted the comment. Yet, the comment isn't there. I even hit Refresh. Nada. I search for the comment in my My Comments section. No dice there, either. It just disappears into thin air. This happened several times last week, and again all day today. I have been unable to post comments today.
I consider this a showstopper bug.
Second reason. When I click Edit on an already-posted post to edit it, 5 out of 6 times, it works. The sixth time? It closes the browser window COMPLETELY, and I have to open a new one and log in again, find the post I want to edit, and try it again, crossing my fingers.
Any idea how to fix these two bugs? Normally, I don't holler too much, but right now, I'm very frustrated with Xanga.
I'm going to TRY posting this here. (If it's successful, it'll be the first comment I've been able to post all day. If it's UNsuccessful, I will post this in your Guestbook instead.)

Bug List:
- When I check "Edit HTML" and then uncheck "Edit HTML", I still see the HTML code in the XTools window. If I click "Done" to post the entry, I don't see neatly-formatted text in my blog, I see HTML code! Running Win98SE; never had problems with the old XTools...
- My standard font is Verdana. However, I format quotes in Times New Roman (italicized). Any text that I specifically set to Times-Roman shows up as Verdana in the blog (even though it is formatted correctly in the XTools dialog), but I can't fix it by editing the HTML because of the problem above!!
My Frustration Level: 11 (on a scale of 1-10).
While the new XTools is in Beta, can't we still use the old XTools?

get a paint program directly onto the x-tools so that we can draw lines, shapes, and fill them in with various colors... in essense letting us make our own pictures or graffitti on our own weblogs
