Exciting news: Janet and Marc are finishing the last round of testing for our xTools relaunch!
You may be thinking, “Hmm… xTools Relaunch?! What’s he talking about anyway?”
Well we’re revamping xTools to be bigger and better. A partial list of what’s in store:
- MORE SPACE: We’re adding more space to type your posts in, especially for Classic members!
- MORE FONTS: We’re supporting a kajillion more fonts. Dying for Wingdings or Monotype Corsiva? It’s your lucky day.
- MORE SMILEYS: We’re tossing some extra smileys in there. An angry face, for sure. Probably some happy ones too!
- BETTER XANGAZON SUPPORT: This one isn’t confirmed yet, but we’re pretty sure that the “Currently Reading” feature will work in Netscape, Mozilla, and other alternative browsers. So far, the testing has been going very well!
- CONFIRMATION WARNING: You ever write a long post and then accidentally hit Cancel instead of Submit? Never again, my friend. We’re adding a “Are you super-duper sure you want to cancel that?!” confirmation warning whenever you hit Cancel or Delete.
Internal testing is going well, so we’re probably about a week or so away from beta testing. Depending on how that goes, this could be hitting your desktop before you can say “enable eProps and comments”!
We’ll keep you posted as testing progresses…

Thank goodness for that; since many of my posts are written in an angry frame of mind, an angry smiley (seems like a contradiction in terms, but that’s Weblish for you
) could come in very handy. 
Likewise the “do you reaaaaallly want to erase your post” function; I bet that everyone reading this has accidently killed at least two or three posts.

Have you thought of adding an AutoSave feature that automatically saves your work in a temporary file periodically similar to what is used on most word processing software?
I use to the feature that automatically copies to my clipboard when I hit Submit on an entry, but I’ve had it happen to me…as have so many others…that I wasn’t able to get to that point before something happened that caused me to lose my post.
And even a partial save would be better than losing completely a very long post because of something screwing up before I could hit Submit, thusly saving a copy to my clipboard.

Um… is the testing by any chance the reason that my Xtools don’t even work right now? When I submit the post the Xtools pop-up changes to show “We can’t find…” etc.

I can’t access xTools either. This is NOT a new problem. If your testing is causing it this time, find a new goddam way of testing that does not inflict pain on your customers.

How about offline composition support LIKE EVERY OTHER BLOG SITE HAS.
dtc – if you want to write it offline then use wordpad or notepad and cut and paste. It is not that difficult.
Give these guys a break – they work really hard for us.

With the relaunch, will premium xTools be available to non-IE browsers? The only reason I use IE anymore is to write posts (mostly because of that small space you have to write in).
It all sounds good, but will it let me upload images? I hope so. I have a photo blog that’s been on hold for about a week now.

I’d love to have a feature that is, perhaps, a next step to the new “Protected” feature.
How about this: A feature where you can designate a specific post to be readable by only a specific person or a specific group of persons, rather than having a specific group of persons who can access all “protected” posts?
So then you’d have maybe a feature when you edited a specific post or edited a specific post that had a pull-down list of those subscribed to your site, or those in your “sites I read” list, or that you could enter a user into, such that that only person or persons would be able to access only this particular protected post. Get my drift?

What about being able to do Currently Reading and Currently Listening at the same time?
I would very much like to be able to put margins on both sides of the text. At the moment if you put a border around non-centred text its going to be too close on one or other sides. Minor issue. I think Xanga is great. I love all the improvements.
Still haven’t worked out what a guest book is for that comments don’t do.
Would it be possible to extend protected postings to include ALL of Xanga, i.e. only members cos that, with a screen name, would extend anonymity to a much greater degree. But would you want to do that?

Just a suggestion. Not everyone has all of the fonts that you host on their computers. Can you host those fonts so users can download them, or are you not allowed to (copyright deals)? Just wondering, because I had to scour the Internet to find the few fonts that you support which weren’t on my computer.

I like the suggestion someone made of allowing people to have two Xtools windows open at once. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been composing a post, only to notice an error in an older one, click “edit”, and lose the one I’m already working on. That, or a little dialog box to say “editing this will make you lose the post you’re composing – turn back, before it’s too late!!!”… er, or something to that effect.

It’d be so cool if the posts could be cached to avoid problems in those instances. Yes, you can compose your post in Notepad and save as you go to prevent your words being lost, but if your post is going to involve tinkering with a lot of code to get different effects (like if you add a lot of pictures or quizzes and you don’t want them all running together, or need to arrange text around images), you can lose that aspect of your hard work if you click “Submit” and then Xtools whites out or the server goes down again.
As for the images thing, since I don’t remember it ever being spelled out to us by the powers that be, I don’t know for sure why they don’t let us put images into our comments on other peoples’ posts, but I do have one theory:
Images can cause a site to load more slowly, and if we were allowed to use images in that way, it could get like some messageboards where loads of users have a big picture as a signature to every reply they post, thus crippling the loading time on a user’s site.
Essentially, it would mean we’d be making a big change to a person’s site without their permission, and their friends (specially those on dial-up) could have trouble accessing their site. They wouldn’t have any control of it until after the fact when they came to delete any replies containing images, and for those who don’t have net access every day, it could take a while for them to become aware of the problem.
i miss being able to do searches for words, not just members.

That’s great, but speaking of the Confirmation Warning, sometimes on wanting to check on a past entry while currently typing a new entry, I end up click on “edit” rather than “# comments” and lose all the things that I typed.. I wish there’s a confirmation for that too…
I xanga in my sleep, and I dreamed a wonderful dream. Could we do something like enabling voice posting? for people with mics, ya know. under the date of the post, have a little display with a play & stop button……. voice posting……. yeah…… that would be groovy.

Personally I find it easy to compose using a text editor of some kind, though no matter how many times I reccomend this to other people they don’t do it and end up whining when they lose a post, so some kind of autosave would be nice. i also found out recently while travelling that the use of a text editor is not always possible. It would be great if new entries got autosaved as private, or even posts got saved as private by default so people don’t end up posting public something that wasn’t meant for public. I don’t know how the email subscription works but if it’s sent out immedietly then changing that mistaken public post to private won’t stop subscribers from seeing it.
Be nice to have access to Xangazon via Mozilla too.

Non-IE browsers need XTools support!!
I use mozilla firebird on linux, and I know the code / browser technicalites behind not having the WYSIWYG editor on non-IE browsers. I’d like to be able to update my posts with Mozilla without having to type in all of the
tags. It grows tiresome after a while.
I built a blog system for personal use a while ago that automatically added in
tags when it read “vbcrlf” hits in a non-edior submission.
Just a thought.

hey: i wrote you earlier about the xangazon not working in mozilla. i just checked again today, and it still wasn’t working. to illustrate: a screenie
and the “pick a person who can view this post” feature sounds good, so that it’s not just a bunch of people on a list. like you could write an entry for just one person, and then another entry for 2 people, and you could just allow names like you were addressing an email (except usernames instead of email addies) anyway, xanga’s great as always. is there any way to check your guys’ bandwidth. i can only imagine how MUCH you guys use.

I’d like to know why doesn’t my counter work? No, I’m not using sitemeter because it’s not for free except on a certain free trial period. I’ve used this kind of counter in my other sites and it works just fine. But on xanga, it hasn’t picked any stats yet although my site has been checked by friends after I’v inserted the code in the stas box.
I wouldn’t want to reveal the name of my counter here but Xanga management can check it in my site.
Another thing, why does the xtools editing page does not readily accept our own html codes. For example, is not among the options in the xtools, but of course I would like to align justify my entries so I’m inserting that code in “Edit HTML”. But Whenever I come back to edit a particularly justified entry, the quotation marks in “Edit HTML” for justify is deleted by Xtools, that if you assume that your codes are not changed, you’d end up with another unjustified alignment of texts. Nobody told me that editing with xtools can be such an agony.

Question – how come sometimes when I put in an entry my font stays the same color (pink), but the letter background turns white? Nobody loves you guys more than I do, but hey I’m having bugs. It’s probably complicated by the fact that I only recently signed up for Xanga Premium. The messages at the top of my screen rotate. One offers me that new beta.xanga.com/private site that you seem to be talking about. But usually I get a message asking me to sign up for Premium. Even assuming this glitch gets fixed in the next day or week or so, I’m still wondering why I don’t see these font choices that you say we have. A variety of smileys, yes. But no fonts at all, no boldface/italics/underline options. There’s a bug someplace, and you asked for us to test and report. Which is what I’m doing.
You guys are way cool. I have confidence in you. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have signed up for lifetime Premium in the first place.

I have an observation to make about Xanga, in that there are all these little smileys that you can add to your blogs…but they all have MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES…if you highlight them, they change their faces…and if I move around the room, they keep on watching me…
Ok…they don’t watch me, but seriously, highlight a winking smiley, and it stops smiling, and I tried it with a few others…and had different results as well.
This could provide hours of entertainment to a group of high people…so enjoy.

regarding the fonts, could we have more and more fonts like tahoma ? i realised that there are sum fonts which you have provided did not work in my computer, cause i dun haf that font. why not provide more common fonts which are available in most computers? hehe.

I write, edit, save and more in my Outlook Express then grab the html file and slap it in the html of the entry box. I am on cable but I do have freeze ups at times and a save feature would be a good thing for all members. I haven’t been a member long and am on retirement so no money to spend but I think the Xanga site is very special with or without the extra frills.

I love using Xanga. I plan to continue using it for a long time, but i would like to cancel the accounts I currently have.
I’ve accumulated 5 accounts within the past year because of problems I have with a certain member. I know this is beyond your control, but I would appreciate very much if you could tell me how to cancel my accounts.
My accounts are Sweet_stefny, Sweetstefnie, Sweetstefny, AdamsChickieChic, and Silversprinkles … Please let me know if I can erase them.
I know Sweet_Stefny has premium service for a year, and i would like it to remain as I have it until it runs out … but the other names I would like to erase.
