XANGA IS BACK
The site is back up! Our ISP melted down during this week’s hacker attacks, so we moved all of our equipment into a new world-class ISP. It was a backbreaking seventeen-hour move that we’ll describe later… glad to have that behind us.
Our original plan was to just upgrade our bandwidth & hardware. Then another big attack on Tuesday knocked out our ISP’s network… and then our ISP admin went on vacation?? It was a bad week.
But we are coming out of it a-swinging. DDOS attacks are hard to defend against, but we are investing heavily in hardware infrastructure where it can help. And we’ve learned just how important it is to work with an ISP with great customer service support. We’ve chosen Above.net, the company that hosts About.com, Electronic Arts, and the New York Mercantile Exchange. It’s a big step up for us, and should help us defend against future attacks.
Our whole team has been up all night (especially Dan, our server guru), so we’re going to crash out now. But one last thought: we will make this right with all of you – both our Classic and our Premium users. More on that after some zzz’s…

Way to go XANGA! I was never so happy to see anything in my life. This has made me realize I use my computer for e-mail and xanga. I read my e-mail and then sit there wondering what to so since I had no Xanga to go to. It was very sad.

Yay for being back up!! My premium runs out this month, and I really don’t have the money to keep it going.. but since the site was down, I didn’t have any way to get the email address I needed to cancel it, and now my 14 days before being charged for Premium automatically are up, and I’ll be charged anyways. So…. with all that’s happened over the past bit, having free Premium this time around would be PERFECT for me.

I’m going to have to respectfully disagree with BabalonTheBride.
Undoubtedly, obviously, clearly, and blatantly we are grateful to you, the Xanga Gods. There is no question whatsoever that your hard work is appreciated.
But many of us have poured hours and hours of time over the years into our blogs, and Xanga’s unpredictability is bothersome/nerve-wracking/distressing/can lead one to suicidal tendencies. Maybe some free premium for everyone is in order? Maybe there are better ideas for compensation out there?
Bottom line, I’m not here to whine. So thank you, thank you, and thank you.
If I recall correctly, this is the first time Xanga has been down for such a significant period of time since Thanksgiving. All in all, that seems to me to be a good track record… esp. since every time it goes down, y’all work so hard to make sure it doesn’t go down in the future. Good work. Have some restful sleep.

thank you soo much… i was so lost without my xanga… but just to add my 2 cents to the list of ideas for you guys to “make it up” to us… lol, i would have to say maybe theres something you can permanently do about that annoying banner, like some other way, or make it smaller and have it sit at the bottom… there are people out there that just dont have a random $20 to spend on premium of all things… just a thought.. and i def agree with that idea on a photo log or something… we should have a limit to how many photots or something, so some of us dont go over board, but def something so we “nonpremium” users can get some pictures up… does anyone else agree?

Many were having Xang withdrawls! Glad to see you back up & running. It’s interesting to learn that you were able to trace back to the actual source of the DDOS. I’ll bet when the Feds knock on their door, they won’t think it’s so funny anymore.
It’s too bad that those who use the free service complain about an almost innocuous banner & can’t find a host for their images. It wasn’t difficult for me, even with as little funds as I had at the time, to come up with the CHEAP annual amount for Xanga premium. After all, it’s only $2/mo! Most spend more than that in a week on Starbucks coffee!

you guys are awesome. the jerks who did the DDOS should be tracked down and prosecuted for every cent they’re worth. more people should be encouraged to pay for premium to help support the new move and the new ISP! and, i bet you, if you laid enough of a guilt trip, you could probably get more people to pay for premium!
AboveNet MFN doesnt have any customer service or support. We have a cage at abovenet and I can only wonder if you are in LGA1 or LGA2. But they are an exquisite IP backbone provider, however.

Have you taken the necessary steps to help ensure that your computer is clean and protected from the second phase MSBLAST.exe virus or Lov San Web Worm? if not we reccommend that you that you immediatly follow our suggested steps below.
If your using the following Microsoft operating systems we recommend that you follow the instructions below to remove or safegguard your computer from the MSBLAST.exe virus or lovsan Web Worm. Even if your computer isnt affected now, it could be in the future.

Please take the time to follow the steps outlined below to help ensure that your computer is safe and clear of the MSBLAST.exe virus or Lov San Web Worm. [ This and other related info can be also be found on our website at http://www.microsoft.com]
1. Close all open programs and press and hold down the following keys simultaneosly: Ctrl (Control), ALt and Delete
2. Click the Task Manager button (if a pop-up box appears with a options list)
3. Select the Process tab
4.Click the IMAGE NAME column to sort the list into alphabetical order
5.Slete the msblast.exe file by clicking on it once. then clikc the End Process button. If you do not see the msblast.exe in th list of running tasks please proceed to step 6 as you should still check your system for the worm and apply the Microsoft patch.(Some operating system require that you log in as the onwer/administrator in order to install this patch)
6. Now you can close the windows task manager screen by clicking the X in the upper right hand corner.
7. Next determine which operating system you are using. Microsoft has different patches to protect each operating system , you will need to know which operating system you have on your computer.
8. click on the start button, go up to RUN. Type winver and press the enter key. the window display will indicate wich operating system is being used( windows 2000, windows xp ect.)
9.Once you have determined your operatinging system got http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treewiewdefault/asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp and click on the link for your operating system.
10. Click download on the right side of the page
11. Choose Run or Open from the pop-up box that appears.
12. Confirm secruity warning pop-up by clicking yes.
13.Follow pop-up instructions.
14.Once your computer has finished go to http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/fixblast.exe , when prompted click open.
15.When it has finished you will have sucessfully checked your system for the MSBlast Worm and install the patch

I can’t believe anyone would attack a site such as xanga… you guyz provide a free page for everyone to let it all out and get what they want said onto the internet. I’m so glad you guyz were able to overcome the difficulties and get everything up and running again.
Forgive me for being cynical, but I’ll believe it after I see it. I hear the boy crying wolf. When I run down the notices for the last year on the front page, nearly 2/3 of them are “Were back after….” or “We were down because…” etc.
Xanga is down more than any other self-proclaimed “professional” web-site I have ever visited. And I don’t pay to play on those…
That being said, I’m sure you all worked hard to get things going again. But I’m doubtful that this is the last time.

Could the attacks be anything to do with the massive slowdown we have been having over here in the UK??? A virus called “Sobig” attacked hundreds of people. The virus made you think there were errors on your computer by not fully-opening programs, uninstalling things and chnaging account passwords. It came as an email attachment nmaed something like “Your Details” from your server provider. It also put BT (equivilent of AT&t) on the internet blacklist so any emails entering into big companies using blacklisting services denied and bounced back. The entire UK’s internet service was shut down and re-started. Could this have had an effect on Xanga???

Man I’m all happy to have this back. This thing has my whole summer life in it. I have to admitt that I did lose faith, and I tried to get another site journal. But it wasn’t the same, I didnt like it. I love this place, and I promise I wont lose faith ever again. So, great job on getting it back, even though it was like a long time ago.
