SUMMER SICKNESS
I’ve been sick a lot this summer… I wasn’t really comfortable talking about it until I started getting better. I dunno, it’s just a bit personal for me.
But recently, I have started to feel better. Plus, I’ve been feeling really guilty about falling behind on emails… so I figured an explanation was in order.
I finally wrote up an explanation of my sickness and thought I’d share:
On June 13th, I got attacked while walking home. It was late at night, somewhere near City Hall — the street seemed so well lit, and yet some street goons ambushed me from the dark alleys. Two of them ran screaming towards me, while the third snuck up behind me with a two-by-four. I’ve seen a lot of street scams, but I didn’t see this one coming.
Even though I was knocked to the ground, I was lucky: I’ve done enough amateur sparring that I was able to block most of the kicks. But kicks are a lot harder to block than punches and one of them slipped through, cracking me in the head. This got me fairly upset, and somehow that anger got me back up on my feet. Then all the boxing training came back and I was ok again. At least, I’m assuming that’s what happened because the next thing I remember, my knuckles were bleeding and the three guys were running off.
I figured the memory loss was just part of the massive adrenaline rush from the encounter. I didn’t really notice the raging headache either, what with the assorted cuts and bruises from the beating I took. Over the next few weeks I kept up my usual publishing schedule, putting out an article on Blogs as Disruptive Tech and doing an interview on the Blogosphere.
But it slowly got harder and harder to write, and soon I noticed an unusually constant headache. After a while I couldn’t write any articles at all – and some weeks, I couldn’t even blog. I started getting dizzy just watching TV or going to the movies.
I went to see a neurologist and we did a full battery of tests. Something about my reflexes got my doctor all concerned, so he ordered an MRI workup. I lucked out: no bleeding in the brain (good news – that would be life-threatening). But my symptoms got worse rather than better, so a few weeks later I went back in for another round of testing. Twelve hours of tests later, we had a diagnosis: Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.
It sounds worse than it is, which is just a fancy word for “I’m ain’t as smaaht no more”. To be more specific, it’s hard to focus and concentrate, and my mental stamina has diminished. It’s slowly coming back though, as I work through a full course of “cognitive rehabilitation therapy”. Basically, I spend a few hours a day doing basic cognitive tasks: alphabetizing words in sentences, categorizing things, making patterns out of shapes, etc. Afterwards, my brain just aches from all that thinking (they say that’s a good sign).
I think that all the rehab is paying off, and I’m feeling better and better. In the meantime, I’ve offloaded a lot of my Xanga responsibilities to Marc. I’ve slacked a bit on my personal email… I get so much email, it’s hard to keep up.
I’m feeling a lot better and will try to post more on my blog, especially to give updates on what we’ve been up to at Xanga these past few weeks. In the meantime, thanks to everyone who sent me nice emails during my time off from blogging!

Oh My God…I’m so sorry this happened to you. Please don’t over-do, trying to “catch up”…We are patient Peeps, once we know the scoop…
…Take care and hope you feel better soon….RoseMary
I wish you had told us about it sooner. A lot of us would have been much more patient about problems. And maybe some of the loudest assholes attacking you would have at least toned it down.
I’m sure you’ll get all your faculties back. Stick with the therapy. Despite your problems, you’ve done a yeoman’s job here.
Catch up when you can, John - we’ll survive. You just concentrate on getting better and trying to take things easy until then. All the best.

I’m glad you’re feeling better. What a horrible thing to go through, getting ambushed and attacked by three guys! You sound like you held your own, though, and sent them running.
Glad to hear you’re on the mend. Give yourself the time and patience to heal. I don’t think folks realize what a big ol knock to the head can do until it either happens to em or they know of it happening to someone else. My hubby’s bonk on the head after a car wreck in August, tho it wasn’t a concussion or anything, had noticable after effects. Its very good your listened to your body’s signals and got yourself to a doctor.
You are most definitely a survivor. I just read that article before coming here. I am so glad that you have returned, but, I just hope that you’re recovery is 200%. You shouldn’t feel guilty. That shows me that you are a good person…thinking of your readers the way that you do. Now, how awesome is that. I understand not wanting to talk about it. Thank you for letting us know that you are o.k.
I’m glad it wasn’t worse, and that you’re on the mend. A close relative survived a subdural hematoma not that long ago, so stories like this make me wince extra special hard…
The relative with the hematoma said she now knows what it was like to have ADD, since she now has it.
Good luck with the therapy!
Oh my gosh, what an ordeal! Did they ever catch the guys who did this? I’m glad you are doing better. Keep resting up, ok?
Props to you for fighting off those asses, and taking the time to recover properly.
Here’s hoping you get to feeling better soon. Let us all know if there is anything we can do.
Blessings and wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.
-Paul
I’m so sorry for you! I hope you get well soon.

wow, john. thanks for sharing this with us. even if you’re not as smaaart as you used to be, that’s still heads above most. rock on and heal quickly.
To quote Homer J. Simpson.
“I’m smart I’m smart, I’m S-M-R-T… I mean… S-M-A-R-T!!!”
Oh…I’m so sorry to hear about the incident which would have been traumatic enough…but the injury too?
I hope that you’re feeling (and thinking) better real soon! {{{hugs}}} Spot
John, I’m so sorry to hear about this. How terrible. If it will help with your load, you can ignore any and all emails you got from me (I think that equals one, but I could be mistaken
). Please take all the time you need to recuperate; pushing yourself too far will only do more harm than good. {{Hugs}}

Crap. Sorry about the double posting above. But thanks for the link to microcontent news!
Oh John, what an awful thing to have happened to you! Now I’m sorry I bother(ed) you with my mundane little problems that don’t amount to a hill of beans in this world (wanted to make ya smile w/ that semi quote from you-know-what-movie).
Glad you’re on the mend.
Thanks for sharing that with us John…….you will be in my prayers for a speedy recovery……thats is such an awful thing to happen to someone…..but I have always believed, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger! I have faith, you will be stronger!! Keep up with the therapy…….sounds like it is doing good.
If I could give you a hundred e-props for kicking those guys asses, I would!! But, here is at least the two you so well deserve!
Damn… I hate that this happened to you, John. I know you will work very hard to get back to your par, which, by the way, I suspect is far above par for most of us.
{{{{{ hugs to my favorite xanga god }}}}}
I hope it all works out for you. A couple of us were afraid of “losing” you. Do you remember your first email–how exciting that was? I bet all the incoming seems a little less enchanting now.
…talk about life in the jungle! You WERE lucky! Delighted you are on the mend and hoping you are being kind to yourself.

Glad you’re feeling better! I can sympathise ~ I had my skull fractured in two places by my event horse when I was 16. It does take a long while but I’m sure you’ll be feeling as good as new eventually!
Sure…. First ya blame the cashews…..
Sorry about that dude. Violence blows.

Damn them for doing that to you….. I’m outraged!! I hope you hurt them too real bad!!
OH, John, this is terrible! I’m so sorry that you’ve been going through this alone. Now that we know, much Xanga LOVE to you. I’ll bet you feel better soon because there’s a lot of positive energy that’s being sent your way. {{{hugs}}}
So sorry to hear that this happened to you! Your injury sounds a like what happens to boxers, for sure. I hope with time you recovery fully. Sending xanga (((hugs))) for that to be soon!
This week’s ZangaZine is dedicated to you for coming to work and doing what you can in spite of all you’ve been through. Take care!
oh john!!!!!! i’m soooo sorry to hear about your attack! how horrible…i’m glad that you lived to blog about it though!!!!! wow…..i’m really glad that your “physical therapy” for the brain is working as well!! things could have been much much worse, i’m glad that they weren’t
sending you lots of love and light
Jesus, man….that’s horrrible (I just read this on ZangaZine). I hope you have a full recovery and I’m sure you will….the human brain is an amazing piece of biological art….it always seems to work much better than we expect.
If you need anything, just give a yell. Really.
Prayers and support,
WFH
Wow, John… that is frightening. Glad you got through that as well as you did. Knowing you handled threee punks by yourself will make me think twice before griping about Xanga again.
Looking forward to you being back at full speed soon.
sheesh!! feel better and more power to you!
*gasp* Geeeeez. I’m so sorry that happened to you! Those moronic goons … I’m so glad you were able to defend yourself, though – it could’ve been so much worse. *shudders*
The road to recovery (both physically and mentally) can be really taxing, but it sounds like you’re doing better on all fronts … take care of yourself …

Sorry to hear that. MTBI is nothing to take lightly. I used to be a tech writer in a university dept. of phys med & rehab, so I’ve read about and seen the effects you’re struggling with. I wish you well…
I’ll pray that you have a speedy recovery
take care
OMG what a horrible story. I’m so sorry you have been struggling with this. I wish you peace and a very rapid recovery. From the parental side I do know a little of the therapy you are receiving.
Take care of yourself, John.
i’m so sorry that happened to you. my lord, what an awful place we live in sometimes. i am glad things are getting better. much love =)
Wow, you are one tough cookie!! I am glad you are ok. Now I am going to worry about you. Geez, you need to remember there are sensitive people out there that are worry warts… and that is me.
Take care and be careful and travel in groups!!
I pray that your health will be restored fully and that you don’t lose your zest for life.
God Bless – Dale
EEPS! Hope you’re feeling better and mending steadily
Although I don’t know you personally, John, I love Xanga too much and a big thanks to you! Keep you chin up! I hope you will recover fully soon. Sending positive thoughts.
So sorry…sending you a Nannyhug…a whole bunch of them
I’m so sorry to hear of your experience. I say this with complete sincerity that you might want to look into “energy work” to supplement your healing. In any case I’m sending supportive thoughts your way.
Be well.
wow, i had no idea something so horrible happened, good for you for holding your own with those guys! i’d love to be able to do that, but lets face it, an 115 pd girl against three thugs, i’d be down for the count. best wishes for your recovery, hope you feel better soon..
oh greaaaaat…and here I was bugging you for help w/the banner thing last night. sorry! glad you’re on the mend though.
I just heard. OUCCCCH! *cringe.
Very sorry for you.
Best wishes for a complete and speedy recovery, and hey. You will probably wind up smarter. You know… You make new connections in the brain, the brain finds ways to workaround the trauma and result is enhanced creativity.
Also mightily impressed with your fighting skills. You’re a hero.
what is this world coming to?…..gosh hope you feel better
Whew. I’m glad your were able to defend yourself in some way,but I’m sorry for the end result. I would focus on healing and don’t let petty emails discourage that
So glad you are feeling better.
hope u feel better
wow. that’s a lot to keep to yourself for so long. I mean, I know it is personal but it is niced you shared. There is something to “well-wishing”, spreading good vibes that can be helpful in an odd sort of way.
that’s terrible!
I’m sorry that happened… but how fortunate that you’ve had training that enabled you to defend yourself… :
best wishes for continued recovery
that’s awful, how can people do that to another human being, i hope everything gets better
How scary this must have been for you. I have dealt with my own share of violence, not something that easily talked about.. something I am not ready to discuss myself really. Props to you for finding the courage to cope and move on.. many people don’t do so. And EXTRA props for the can of whoop ass you opened up. ;o) Makes me feel good to know the good guys win sometimes! Very encouraging!
Best wishes in your continued recovery.
I’m glad to hear you’re on the road to recovery… Sending good thoughts and prayers your way as you continue on this journey!
Take care,
Tamm
