The Half Blood Prince
Speaking of “halfs”, I just finished rereading Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (the next and final Harry Potter book comes out in two weeks!). One of the things I like about the Harry Potter series is how JK Rowling works so much discussion of race and class into her books – albeit disguised in little allegories, so it’s less controversial. It kinda reminds me of the old Star Trek series… although a bit less ham handed.
Anyway, I did some quick research and found this overview of Class and Racial Prejudice in Harry Potter. I thought the stuff on the Weasleys was pretty on point with the colorblind stuff we talked about earlier:
Rowling utilizes the obsession of some in the wizard world with “blood purity” as an analogy for class prejudice and racism. The wizard world is composed of a small number of “pure-blood” families, and the majority heralding from “half-blood” or “muggle-born” ancestry. These categories, while irrelevant to many within the book, are frequently cited by the more intolerant characters as a measure of personal worth. Some believe that the concept of “blood purity” within the wizard world is a reference to elements of the class-system that was previously a feature of British society, particularly within educational institutions such as universities or public schools similar in nature to Harry’s school, Hogwarts. It also references World War II era Germany, particularly that the leader of the rising hatred and oppression against the so-called “half-breeds”, Lord Voldemort, is in fact a “half-blood” himself, much like Adolf Hitler didn’t fit his own Aryan ideal.
Harry Potter makes statements about real issues of prejudice by assuming that they do not exist. For example, it is taken for granted that every profession in Rowling’s world has personnel who are both male and female; even the sports teams are mixed.
Even families who ignore the concept of “blood purity” are generally prejudiced against “non-humans” or “half-breeds”. This theme is explored with characters such as Remus Lupin, a werewolf, and Rubeus Hagrid, a half-human, half-giant. Additionally, house-elves are considered fit only for subjugation and slavery, despite their human-like feelings and their own powerful magic (demonstrated by Dobby in Chamber of Secrets).
Rowling also uses the Weasleys, an extremely tolerant “pure-blood” family, as examples of people that hold prejudices without even realizing it. Harry’s friend, Ron Weasley, is shocked to learn of Lupin’s affliction in Prisoner of Azkaban, and Hagrid’s ancestry in Goblet of Fire. Ron’s mother, Molly Weasley, also unwittingly expresses open prejudice against werewolves in Order of the Phoenix.
I don’t mind Muggles… but I can’t stand those filthy werewolves.
15 days til Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows comes out… can’t wait!

Be careful, John…you don’t want to upset any werewolves who may be reading this…
I am so behind on the whole Harry Potter thing. Maybe someday I will catch up… alas.
Hugs, Tricia
i havent read this one yet–only because the last and final one is coming out and i rather read them one after the other. the wait for the next installment is just too long for me and at times, i even forget parts of the plots. im really looking forward to it. im the kind of person who can’t wait to know what happens next, but is sad when the book ends.

I think I’ll reread OotP and HBP. I’ve read GoF many times, since it’s my favourite of the six so far.
Harry Potter is rather amazing – it’s taken the literary world by storm. It is a children’s book in vocabulary (in my opinion, at least) but in theme, etc. it is most definitely an adult work. Commentary on racism is just one example.
I have not even read one of the books, should I?
On the NYC subway there’s ads for the Harry Potter movie which feature an Asian girl in the back. In Paris, there were the same ads, but the Asian girl wasn’t in them. Very odd…
just wanted to say…
im rereading the half blood prince tooo!
i swore i’d never read the harry potter series. finished the half blood prince about a month ago [cried like the big baby i am] and now and looking forward to and dreading the final book. don’t want it to end but can’t wait to find out what JK has in store for the crew.
as for muggles…when i was little. VERY little, one of many nicknames my dad had for me was “muggle.”

so i guess i know where i stand in the world of potter.
and the werewolves? c’mon, man…you can’t say you don’t like lupin.
what wow.. in 15 days deathly hallows is coming out, I need to go and reread half blood prince again
I am still way behind on Harry Potter…
I am holding a werewolf sensitivity training class if your interested in making some changes.
interesting! i already pre-ordered my harry potter book. i should re-read from order of the phoenix to refresh my memory tho. i saw the hbo special for order of the phoenix and now i’m excited!
I am a little excited, too. I like Harry Potter a lot.
15 Days to my wedding! The world is counting down and they dont even know it!
I’m not entirely sure how relevant that last paragraph is, or at least its examples. While the Weasleys may show limited prejudices to those who aren’t full human, their prejudice against werewolves is probably somewhat founded in the fact that werewolves really are dangerous creatures.
ryc: hahahaha… yeah, i spend a lot of time criticizing the cgi in the sequels to Matrix too… but they’re still pretty good movies. i might be a tad biased cuz i’m a bit geeky.
hmmm, good idea as far as re-reading half blood prince. I wonder if I can get it read before the final comes out. I love these books. I’ll be in the plane the day after it comes out for a very, very, long trip. I hope I can get a copy to take with me!
(yeah i just sounded like a total nerd. hahahahh k)
I’ll be there at midnight (0 hour) to buy that book.
I’m rereading too… can’t wait for the book. It’s too late to comment on anything else you’ve written with even a half way intelligent responce and since there still isn’t an EDIT button available for comments… I’m not going to risk it. I’ll be back after sleep… ZZZzzzzz…
You haven’t figured out i’m a werewolf yet?
Don’t listen to Harry Potter on what a Werewolf is…

I consider you part of my pack.

At my age, I love Harry Potter books and have read them all and the new one is on order. I can hardly wait and I am one of the readers who really hopes he doesn’t die in this one. Not sure what will be a good ending but I read one of the publishers reviews and he said he cried. I can hardly wait. Bad thing, I have my book on order with Amazon and it will be at least a week after it’s out before I get it. I could pick it up at Sams but I wanted the library binding on this last one. I would love to have copies of the British prints of all the books. Not sure that will ever happen. They have one of the first copies of The Philosophers Stone, British edition going on auction in the UK and expect to get upwards to $20,000. for it. I have been keeping so much info about it I could write a book.
Good post in fact I enjoyed it a lot.
P.S. thanks so much for the link, its super.
hey! what is wrong with werewolves
If my parents didn’t like dressing me in those awful plaid jackets that were fashionable for kids back then, i’d have posted a picture of a little me sitting on Queen Elizabeth’s lap shortly after Jamaica got it’s independence
When i came to this cuntry in ’65 and got wind of civil rights and prejudice and all that other crap i wondered—Are these mofos out of their effing minds
Classism was something i had to overcome…but RACISM was foreign to Jamaicans back then…it has since been imported
So far, i’ve yet to find a biology book listing any other homonoid race on the planet other than homo sapien
OOOOOH I cant wait im on prisoner of Askaban oo its really good and good point with the Pure blood stuff
I am waiting until they are all out. Then I will read them all. I learned a long time ago to avoid putting myself in that position. lol
Old Hat
Great post!
i havent read any of the harry potter books nor seen any of the movies, although everyone keeps telling me i’m missing out!
Eh. JK Rowling may be against classicism and racism, but she has always struck me as homophobic.
I have never ever read anything about Molly Weasley saying anything prejudiced against werewolves. Ever.
And I’ve read them way too many times.
Sorry…don’t think it’s in there.
so i’ve never left you a comment before, but i always read your entries.
just wanted to say that i’m glad some people actually take Harry Potter seriously. i was going to put some philosophical thing about glad to know that HP is imoportant to some as it is to me and i’m not the only weird one.
but i’m too tired.
can’t wait either for the book!!
I’ve resisited the urge so far to get into the whole Harry Potter thing. I’ve yet to read any of the books. Maybe a few years down the line when the Harry Potter hype is gone and I can find the books discarded in an obscure section of the public library…then I’ll read them. Have a good one, man.
Hey, were-wolves rock! ^_^
Yea, that was an awesome book. <3
I am just loving that these books are making kids want to read and not the ones that would anyway (but those too of course). Shoot, I love that they make adults want to read for that matter. I don’t care if it is audio or visual reading, it’s the decoding that is going down that is working those brains. Sweet! (yes, I know it is the last but there will be plenty to take up the torch.)
Hope you enjoy the movie!
ryc: lol. it would have to be ex-wife for anything to happen. =X

thanks for subscribing
rowling is really quite genius. and man, can she tell a story.
Thanks John!
I never realised there was such depth of thought involved … perhaps I should pick up a copy somewhere.
My tendencies are towards reading of wars and great explorations.. my love is in fact more than fiction, Mr. Nice, Papillion…
Thanks for the insight
Don’t worry about the ads…Xanga kicks MySpace butt anyday. Unlike MySpace, Xanga actually WORKS 99% of the time. lol
I understand that Xanga has to make money somehow, but it did throw me for a loop for a minute seeing nearly the whole screen covered in ads. Shhhh, don’t tell anyone this, but I think I secretly like the ads. They add color and give me a nice little surprise when I come back to Xanga. Now I’d better creep off back to my site before someone flogs me for saying that I actually quite enjoy the pretty colors of the ads. E gads.
Why’s Xanga have Kelly Rowland all over it with the Live Feed too? I kind of liked Xanga when it was plain and simple.
I don’t really care for Kelly Rowland or the celebrities who also use it either. Becoming an advertising machine makes it less easy on the eyes.
I am completely and underly confused on how this new xanga thing works. why can’t we use the old Xanga anymore? Or can we? if we work on the public page instead of the privet one, is it like having old xanga?
please answer.
