PLEASE GIVE US FEEDBACK!
Advertisers have asked us about every possible ad unit:
popups, popunders, even spyware. We always refused to even
consider it – they’re just too intrusive and disgusting
. For the past five years, we’ve relied on the trusty ol’ banner ad to keep our site free (please see the top of my page).But lately, we’ve lost a bunch of ad deals because many of our advertisers aren’t even making banners anymore! Instead, they’re using Leaders (aka Leaderboards) – the ad units you can see on our front, blogring, and metro pages.
Leaders are a bit bigger, and have become the new standard for web
advertising. Our lack of leaders has been killin’ us in
advertising deals. After we lost the third big ad deal in a row,
we finally had to face the inevitable: a possible switch from banners to leaders.We asked our designers to mockup some pages with Leaders, and
showed
them around a bit. We were surprised that a lot of people didn’t
even
notice the change in ads?! So we thought we’d share the mockups
with you, and get your take. Our first mockup is pretty
barebones, while the second two are a bit more Xanga-y. Could you
take a look and let us know: are these ok? Which one do you like
the most?- Option 1: Barebones
- Option 2: Xanga Tabs
- Option 3: Lowkey Tabs
UPDATE: Thanks to everyone
for your feedback. Option 2 (Xanga Tabs) was the overwhelming
favorite with 45% of all votes! Option 3 (Lowkey Tabs) came in
second with 33% of the vote, while Option 1 (Barebones) came in dead
last with only 22%. Ha, the Barebones version was my personal
fave… which just goes to show you the importance of getting
feedback. We will get ready to switch to the most popular version
(Option 2 – Xanga Tabs), and push it live tomorrow morning.

i like 1. if the tabs would be customizable, like the text color and stuff, then either of option two and three would do. if there’d be a search area beneath the tabs, like that on the front page, that would be nice too…. OR, you can have a part in the CLAF area where people can choose to place those tabs or not, just like in the default search in a classic xanga (people can choose to show the search engine or not). OR. you guys can erase the usual “search” in the CLAF and replace it with those tabs, that is, with a textbox beneath.

i like the 2nd and 3rd one better. Because you can search a user, through anyones page instead of xanga front page. Xanga is one of the most popular site worldwide, and its a free service. I think we can sacrifice a little with advertisement in order for yall to make money. And everyone should go premium like me, whoot 1 gigs of pic.

i have np w/ any of them, but barebones is the least cluttered. they’re all fine, and it’s not much bigger than the current banner. but then i’m on 1280 x 1024. might be more noticeable at more geriatric settings.
I don’t think that any of these will really affect us all that much.

#1. the tabs aren’t necessary, since I can just go to the front page with one click.
I HATE ads that move. I find them distracting and I’d never click on an ad that moves. As a matter of fact, I try not to support companies that use moving ads.
I think that Premium Xanga members should never have to see ads anywhere on Xanga. Otherwise, whats the point of premium?

All of them are okay… but I think if I HAD to go with ads I would just do the ad…and not the toolbar with it…
since users have to be signed in to search and such… so my vote number 1 but the others are just as nice looking…
What? People are actually choosing what kind of “ad” they want to be shown??? Dang, xanga users are really different then other places. In this day and age, no ad is acceptable IMO. I spent many of my KFC cash to buy a subscription over at Deviantart.com and also here. Unfortunately here however, don’t have a nice system like DA to block ads for subscribers. It’s all good though. Do what ya hafta I guess.

It is simple and sleek… but still has all the necessary xanga tabs…

I like idea #1 the best for several reasons. A. The site just looks cleaner and less cluttered without the tabs. B. It’s repetitive to have both the tabs and the search bar, which already accomplishes the same task that the tabs would and then some. C. If the tabs are meant to replace the search bar (and you didn’t say if they did or not), I would much rather have the search bar than the tabs. Thanks for taking or imput.
I don’t think these banners are bad at all. As long as they stay up in the top area and aren’t jumping all over my screen I’m fine with them. As for a choice amongst the mockups. I would go with 2. First off number 1 is nice and clean but for first time users who get to xanga through someone else’s blog and not the front page they might not know about the extra features, especially since last i knew you have the option to turn off (make invisible) the search bar. The 2nd and 3rd are a lot alike, but as for website heuristics, the second one clearly highlights which page/tab you are currently looking at while the 3rd option only bolds the text making it less clear where you actually are. So yeah, option 2.
And I’ve said this before to the xanga gods, but I’ll say it again: Thanks for keeping the ads decent and for caring about the xanga mortals’ opinions.

The new web standard is 1024×768 anyways, so I dont think leaders would be bad.
John, any of them would do. Just PLEASE don’t go to popups. Even though I’m using Firefox, popups are still annoying, and it would suck to see Xanga slip to popups. Although, if I did have to choose, I’d go with color-customizable tabs. Maybe if they could just be the color of regular text?

Id say first. Their really not that much different from the first ads at all.. Maybe to make them less intrusive you could give us the option of putting them on the bottom of our pages? Under the next button?
2 and 3 look good. And they aren’t any more distracting than banners.

The second one seems best to me.
And, an explanation, since I generally do speak my mind around here. The color scheme of the tabs on the second one matches the Xanga “image” that users recognize as tres Xanga. These are the colors copied by other spinoff Xanga communities such as blogring.net and others, and to me, as to many longtime users, they are Xanga, for better or for worse.
And as far as the tabs go, I see them as a nice addition to the Leaders. It gives options on all of those Classic sites that are currently unavailable to anyone. In fact, I would like to see an option for all users to adopt a tab interface similar to what is offered on the home page, etc. now, since it would speed up navigation of the site. I say option because some people find change difficult and would undoubtedly kick and scream about the desecration of their bleeding goth layouts. If it were a choice like, say, the search bar, it might grow on people.

I am sorry, after one week xanga is still not capable of displaying simplified Chinese characters on its skins ( all of them)! It happened all of a sudden and we were really at a loss. Everything seems to be fine but our posts are automatically converted into unrecognizeble symbols. Who changed something in the skins maybe?
True, I can practise my English writing by posting in English , but Chinese is really my mother tongue and is it comfortable to post every entry in a way of writing something like a composition in a second language test?
If this problem cannot be solved promptly, I believe a number of Chinese premium users will quit. Skin is the only distinctive premium feature now, since xanga had given rich text editing mode to classic users. But now there is something wrong with the skin, and who want to continue like this?

personally, i think anything that isn’t spyware or pop-ups is fine. especially if it keeps our beloved xanga free. but, i think the first one is the best. i’d never use the tabs, so i dont need them. the other two are fine aswell, i jsut wont really use them.

i like the simple, clean approach of #1.
option #2. This option seems best suited for the advertisers because a xangian’s eyes automatically fall upon the ad as he/she attempts to find the right xanga tab. The bolder, blue words (as opposed to the finer, black words of the 3rd option) also have a tendancy to attract the xangians eyes more quickly.

i like the first one – that’s because then it uses up the least amount of space on the top of my xanga so i have more room to fill on the bottom… otherwise that’s another amount of space that isn’t viewed right away when my page loads. i wouldn’t use the tabs that much either.

I didn’t notice much of a difference either way. I tend to just look beyond the ads myself, and as long as they don’t have little cockroaches running around, I accept them as part of internet life. I really appreciate that you decided against popups and popunders from the get-go as well. I’ve always been so happy with the Xanga team and how much you care about us. Thanks so much.

Well according to a few already who have posted I like 2&3. They are easy to use and they are clean. Personally I would like to see them on the sites themselves. I think it would make it easier for everyone to keep up with things. A few people who read but dont post to my site, have even asked how I found the xanga team. It might be worth while to put up a link for those who dont know how.

Wow, it took me forever to find the difference between the three. I don’t really care about how customizable they are, considering I’ve never changed my layout from that first choice of pre-made layouts. And btw, thank God for you guys making those. K think about it this way: nobody likes ads. Either make them useful, or keep them as minimalistic as possible. I like the aesthetics of the 3rd one, but I would like to see some customizability in the colors of the ads or whatever.

I don’t really like bloated interfaces, so I’d be tempted to say sans tabs, even though they do look kind nice, they don’t really enhance the experience. 1. maybe 2.
please, please take leaders if you need to, especially over popups or spyware (!!!). I, too, barely noticed the size difference. The tabs are a nice touch, although haha, I gotta say… I don’t think I noticed them much, nor would I really use them. If I had to choose, though, I’d pick 1. I really agree with oinx’s comment.

Option 3: Lowkey Tabs. I think you guys got rid of it. I’m not sure. But the other day, I was looking at the front page and there was this terrible flash popup. It wasn’t a regular window popup. Sort of embedded within the page itself. I really hate those because it usually forces me to click the close button and then losing the page I was trying to get to. Just letting you know.

As a matter of fact, I’d rather you concentrate on giving me my premium for two accounts I had to close after two months, because you didn’t respond to my previous requests regarding problems on my site. the second and third are good. The only thing that might be bothersome is that they sort of intrude on the layout of the xanga because they look like they’re a part of it.
Financing is hard, and advertising is a …very BAD person sometimes, I hope you guys find a way.
Yeah, if you hadn’t said anything I prolly wouldn’t have noticed the difference. Of course, no ads are why I pay for premium, but since I still have to see the ads on other peoples xanga sites, I think it would be cool if they could choose between those three options.

The only thing I care about at this point are the damn adds that cover the screen without you so much as rolling over the ad.
I hate it when i’m reading a blog only to have a POP UP add come up without warning. Then it takes forever for the X to come up so I can close it. The ones that play out like movies and take forever to get rid of.
Don’t put those up on the blogs and I will never complain about ads.

I’m fine with anything that keeps xanga free and without pop-ups/pop-unders/spyware. The leaders are fine. I like #2 best. The only problem I have with it is that it’ll mess up div layouts but that’s easily fixable

To be totally honest after really studying the options, I prefer the #1Barebones as it has the Xanga name and link at the left of the ad. In actuality, they all appear about the same to me but that one is my choice.

There’s a technology that will allow for any words in a paragraph to be double underlined, and when a mouseover occurs, an ad quickly shows up. That may be interesting.

Aesthetically and functionally, the LOWKEY TABS is best. It gives the reader quick access to the major sections of Xanga without interfering too much on design. Sure, it’s more real estate away from the page, especially for those who use custom banners, but overall, I think it’s the best.
P.S. If you choose to go for the barebones, I suggest remove the border. It looks tacky.

How about placing the tabs UNDER the banner? I hate accidentally clicking on ads.
It would be easier to ignore the ads that way. Also, please refuse ads that flash. Those are especially annoying & to those of us with light sensitivity; they can give us headaches (as do combining black on white & vice-versa or ‘hot colors’). Also, those flashing ads can cause seizures for epileptics.

just a thought. coming from a human computer interaction (with knowledge interaction design) background, wouldn’t it be more useful if you tested these designs with users to figure out what works best for them? for example, is it really necessary to include those links at the very top? what links are most relevant for people–e.g. the users, the metros?

I say no to advertising.
I’ve been a premium member of Xanga since 11/6/2002. My membership expires in 2 months, and I’d hate to see Xanga go the route of many of the inferior blogging sites — it’s ruined those sites. I feel the leader-free design has appealed to many of the members, and I’m not sure what I’ll do with my blogging should Xanga decide to step up ads.
I also foresee that should Xanga begin to use spyware, lawsuits could result, unless you heavily advertise that your website uses spyware — and that will scare away many of the members, and make it more difficult to attract new members. Nobody likes spyware, and a majority of the people don’t even know that spyware exists on their computer. But as a member of the community that is computer savvy, I know the second spyware attaches itself to my PC, and I know how to handle it. (The Xangans that are part of this group won’t stand for the spyware, either, and lemme tell ya, there’s quite a few of them.)
But, being as Xanga hasn’t even flinched by my words in the past — I’ve even had attorneys send letters to Xanga, threatening action if a Xanga wasn’t removed, I doubt my words will do any good here.
There’s a Xanga that exists that defames me, and I’ve done everything I can to try to hide it — it hurts my career as a musician and a producer. If you want more info, email me.

John, please remember load time for dial up users. Sure, alot of shipmates have DSL or modem, but you do have a solid core of dial up users as well. While I understand the absolute need for advertisement to pay the salaries of the x-gods, servers, etc., you are offering above the crease headlining. I suggest you try to stick with ADS and layouts that load as fast as possible for your users. If you base your concept design on this premise, you will have much happier users and MORE users.

I definitely like the second one the best. It gives you the option to search those areas of xanga without moving from the page you are currently on, and the tabs in in harmony with the front page look of xanga.
However if you are looking for something that would not contrast with the design of various xangan’s pages – the third option is probably your best bet since it doesn’t impose the xanga blue on the personal blogs.
My question is, how is this going to affect premium members? Will this change make it so we have to have the leaders on our pages?

I agree with a previous comment that said that we should perhaps have the option of choosing in the CLAF. For those who don’t know what RSS is….it is a set of code that allows you to read what is going on with a certain site from a different website. XML.

I agree with the simplicity of the first one, but because the second one would be easier to move around, it is a very good choice. The third one is just a not so good version of the second one. So go with the second one.

Barebones probably – I have premium, but if I didn’t – that would be it. The tabs seem redundant since we can click on XANGA to get to that – also, if there were tabs – it would be easier if they could be on the bottom of the adds since we wouldn’t want to accidentally click on the ads if we aren’t interested.

I say stick with the leaders… it’s only an extra quarter of an inch at the top and, like you said, most people don’t even notice. They’re so anxious to get to the meat of the page (i.e. the blog) that they just scroll down as soon as the page loads.

Leaders aren’t that obtrusive when you look at it compared to the banner ad. You have more width than the usual banner but height isn’t to much more and the incorperation of the xanga tab module is a nice touch. I say go with #2.

I think they all work as decently as possible as far as advertising is concerned. Never switch to popups or popunders. You are guaranteed to lose a lot of members and irritate visitors that way. Barebones seems the most similar to the current ad type, which might be appreciated by the members since that is what they are used to seeing, but tabs are fine, too. They are a bit more noticeable, though. People who use xanga for the first time will find the tabs helpful and easier to navigate, so that could definitely help keep the number of members up since many people sign up and then never use them because they lose interest or can’t figure it out. I’m glad that you have considered the thoughts of Xanga members on this one. Personally, I want advertising to be discrete and out of the way. Popups, popunders, and sidebars of any kind will annoy your users. A banner ad is a nice way to go on this one. Even though it would be more preferable at the bottom, the top is fine and at least it isn’t interfering with the content below on the page. All three options are decent. I hope my input has helped you with the various aspects, as well as pros and cons of each. Thanks!

I prefer plain old ads without navigation elements put in as well. The ads themselves are distracting enough without the possible confusion of thinking the tabs are part of the ads. Also, the semantic meaning of tabs (displaying the same information in a different way) isn’t conveyed through tab-like navigation elements.

I like the idea of having the tabs at the top because it would be easy to access some of the xanga links, such as the search bar, especially for those pages that choose to have the search bar be hidden. The regular xanga tabs are okay because the coloring represents the main xanga page, however, the lowkey tabs add distinction between the main page and a user’s page. Either one works. I love xanga. Keep up the good work.

I really doubt anyone would have even noticed if you made the switch without saying anything. It was very upstanding of you to even mention it and ask for feedback when most owners would have did what was best for their bottom line. The AD rev would be used for the good of Xanga anyway, I think you should go ahead with what Xanga needs.

Thanks for keeping popups out of the picture! That’s one of the major reason why I’ve stayed so loyal to Xanga, unlike how I’ve been with other web sites in the past that have bow there heads to “The Man”.

the third is more classy and less…flashy….or campy. something like that, while still remaining practical.
The second and third ones look nice, but I don’t like the fact that the tabs are so close to the ad. Especially since my mouse is kind of sticky and doesn’t always click where I want it to. The first one is plain, but acceptable. It doesn’t seem to work in my resolution (which is 800 x 600, I think.) I have to use the horizontal scroll bar, which I don’t like at all. So…one if you can get the resolution right, one of the other two if you can’t. Maybe get some distance between the tabs and the ad.
To be perfectly honest, it doesn’t really matter. When I see shit like that the first thing I do is nail it with Adblock. Firefox is marvelous, eh?

The differences between options 2 and 3 are very minimal, so there is really no need to vote between the two, I think. I do prefer their setup over that of option 1, however, and belive that they are the way to go, minute differences aside.

I think switching over to leaders instead of banners. It’s not too much different then the banners you already use and if it enables you to get a lot more ads to keep xanga going, then by all means, DO IT!

Yeah, I agree with the majority, definitely 2. The little tabs keep the page from looking like it’s been overridden from the advertising, and who knows… perhaps it’ll be better for the people advertising since you might have to look up at the tabs whereas before you didn’t at all. Oh yeah, smoooth.

I like the Barebones because I don’t use any of the other Xanga features described in the tabs. Maybe it’s because I’m on the old side of the Xanga user (age 24) but all I do is check for comments on my site and read my subscriptons.
From a design standpoint, I think the Barebones is a lot cleaner looking than even the current banner ads. (I’m an advertising art director so I notice these things.) And actually I think it blends a bit nicer into the whole heading section so it’s not as prominent (which, as a user, I like much better).

Mm. it seems that it’s only a bit bigger, no? To be completely honest, that might be a good thing. On thing that always bugged me as an up and coming web designer was how “off” the banner adds seemed, like an afterthought. Rather, if you make them more the size of the whole page itself, it’s more integrated into the flow of the design, and as a result, more seamless.

The leaderboards really aren’t that bad. Appreciate you guys staying away from the popunders/overs. Also, why don’t you guys do AdWords? I like them. You could get three of them in the same room as a traditional banner and they can be focused to the content of the page.

Well…it took me a minute to figure out the difference, but i say option 2!
I like having some color on the tabs, and the barebones one has some problems in Opera, so I have to pick option 2.

I think option number ONE brings the least attention to the ad which makes it ideal for me.
if we used the second one, would one of those be blue? if that’s not customizable, that’s going to drive people nuts…
i’d say keep it bare. when you put more into it, it’ll often bother people.

Honestly, I’m not sure what you are trying to show me.
Barebones! The others will take up extra vertical space, which might be a problem for pages with custom banners or small screen sizes.

Xanga tabs is the best IMO.
Maybe you should put different size ads on pages depending on their bandwidth. i.e. i have 1-2 people checking my xanga every few days i.e. VERY low bandwidth so i would have a small banner, people with more bandwidth would have a larger banner.
I really think no one uses the tabs and is just a waste of space, i vote bare bones if its not too late. i realllly don’t like the larger ads, its becoming rediculious.

Why dont we link a banner from a favorite band, or from a favorite brand of canned turkey, or shoes or whatnot..
anyway, what im getting at is that, if Xanga suddenly requires each user to have at least four links to a big brand name item, such as GAP brand Clothing or Froot Loops brand Cereal…
no matter what the sponsor, if you get a couple, say, a hundred thousand, users to Place their OWN banners and/or links, the recipiants of this traffic will be MUCH obliged, and should, in return, Provide Xanga with its nessecities.

I think option 2 looks better, although the only difference I see in 2 and 3 are text color and active tab indicator. Saw one person suggested customizable, and I think that would be cool … but it would make “branding” consistancy … perhaps a few pre-designed options for look and feel? Wouldn’t be too hard to implement them using a with the header being pulled from a database field and a drop down box to select the one that strikes yer fancy. *shrug* could even implement all three if you do it that way. just a thought.

I have found the difference in Option Xanga Tabs and LowKey tabs, and The Xanga Tabs, (Option 2) is the best, because where as LowKey Tabs merly “Bolds” the Name of the Location you are @ the Xanga Tabs, heighlites the Page title…. More Easily Destinguishable on what page you are stationed. From personal web-design experiance I know that Neither will be widly used, And it does not matter… Although Option 1 Does take up less room, for those users users who hate Banners as a whole, or have low Screen-RES… like 800×600 for Ex. If you are having such problems from choosing a banner because of ‘hosting’ problems, I would agree to host part, if not ALL of your site, supporting up to 1.9 or 2.0 Gigs of Bandwidth… for free.. simply because I use this site, and I despise Banners…. Plz Email me

To be honest, I don’t like the banners at the top at all. They are too big and make our xangas look really ugly. Do you think that they could make them a little smaller and better looking? Maybe even something where we could change it a little ourselves (the color, size, writing, etc.) Yeah, I know that is probably going to be a lot, but think about it. I don’t want to smash your ideas because it seems to be very important to advertise, but those are just too big. Thanks!

I think that you guys should make it a choice… Like in your look and feel, How would you like your banners? And then give a buttload of options. If you want to know how big a buttload is your going to have to see how much your butt weighs. Then take a large trash bag and fill it with peanuts until it and your butt are the same. How ever many peanuts that is is equal to a buttload, more or less.

Barebones is much better. Considering the fact, people don’t like what they’re reading to be cluttered, just as they don’t like having to write on a table with no room to place your pen and paper without feeling confined to one space. Barebones is most definietly the way to go, seeing as we already have navigation/search bars on the sites, why must we need two?
