CLEAN AND SIMPLE ADDRESSES
Now, Xanga site address are a bit more clean and simple (thanks to Joel!). For example, check out my site here:
Notice how the site address doesn’t redirect to http://www.xanga.com/home.aspx?user=john… or skin.asp?user=john? It just stays nice and clean, as xanga.com/john.
Don’t worry tho – if anyone is still using your old site address (e.g.
xanga.com/home.aspx?user=john), it will still work just fine.I
don’t know why I find this so exciting… after all,
xanga.com/john has always redirected to my xanga site. But
somehow, having the site address stick around makes it seem so much
cleaner… and somehow, a bit more personal? Anyway -

the skin calendar needs to be cleared up a little tho. month-to-month transition (say, going back or forward one month at a time) still has the “skin.asp”.

Sorry if this seems like a negative comment, but if you are not aware of a problem we are ALL experiencing, you need to be. The problem is:
When we scroll past page one, even if we’re logged in, it’s as if we are guests at our own sites. We can no longer edit an old post, we can no longer change an old post from private to public, or vice versa, and we no longer have access to our private posts. That is, unless the entry in question is on page one, i.e., one of the last five posted.
Could this problem possibly be related to the cleaner addresses? Regardless, the problem needs fixing. Thank you for your kind attention to this matter, and I am truly appreciative of all of your wonderful work. Xanga is a great service. I love it.

It only works when you type the “www” part of the URL, however, not if you just type “xanga.com/name_of_user.”

Twoberry is correct. When logged in as “private,” the URL automatically truncates the “private” subdomain when selecting the next five entries. Attempting to manually type the word “private” between the Xanga.com and the user name (with appropriate back slashes, of course) results in an error message. Your new system does not allow users to edit posts beyond the last five entries.

o and newfndglry585 it’s cause you put a layout on it and the layout appears to have a mistake in the codeing just go to look and feel and delete all the code in your custom header box… if you still want another layout try a different site like xo_layouts_n_watnot_xo I know all of thiers work.

umm…. I have this code that only shows one entry instead of five and after Thursday night (Eastern Time), it didn’t work. It seems to be working when you “preview” your xanga under look & feel, but when you save it, it shows the most recent 5 entries instead of only the most recent one.

okay, i seriously think you need to do something about all the porn websites circulating on xanga now. Pictures with babnanas up their vag? Total nudity? That is not something that I think xanga should be supporting. If you do, im sure many many people will be leaving for livejournal soon enough. WE do not want to see naked girls, that is what porn sites are for. WE should not have to look at these things if we do not want to, and I do not want to. Please take these people off xanga, or I will remove myself. Im sure many people feel the same.
Everything is fantastic and greatly appreciated..but the ads on the first page are getting ridonkulous. The other day, some tacky Bubblicious ad flew out at me through the computer screen, followed me to the shower, followed me to school, and when I was trying to take notes in psychology, it followed my pencil everywhere and I couldn’t click the little X to close it…. and when I managed to click the little X it just stayed there anyway. These shits are getting advanced.

This hasn’t been fixed yet in the subscription page. When I clicked on your name through my subscribed list the address in the URL field changed was still set to http://www.xanga.com/home.aspx?user=john - it didn’t stay as http://www.xanga.com/john. Maybe you guys just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

This looks like a major bug, because there’s no way I can post from a public address. Please let us know what to do about this problem.

hey bro, it’s not likely you will ever see this…but in the strange case that you do…Xanga would probably turn over some massive cash if they began offering yearly journals in which they publish a xangan’s entries and comments for an entire year in a book and sell the xangan the book at the end of the year. just a thought…if xanga makes millions cut me in on some profit!

My site looks differently in public preview (http://www.xanga.com/airglow) than it does on the old site name. In the new public preview, my profile module shows up on the left side.
In the old address (which still functions under my “Home” link at the top of my Xanga), the public profile does not show up, as I had it removed with a code on my Look and Feel.
Can you iron this out, or do I have to find another code to make my public profile disappear on the front page of my Xanga.

i would appreciate it if you made the browsing simplified by collating previous into groups. for example instead of simply “next 5″ on each page, displaying links on each page to others (similar to you anti-stalking module where you have the ability to view pages by dropdown bar).
in addition it would help if you could make blogring browsing simplified for large blogrings such as UC Berkeley. by simplified i mean if you could do the same as i asked for above with your display by username (instead of a link to the next page, include links to next 50 or 100).

excuse me, i dont like this new feature, because i have tracker and whenever i check it, i cant seem to find out the referrer the user used to get to my site. this new feature has messed up my tracker.
I use to do xanga almost everyday and never had a problem. But i had to stop because i didnt have internet. Now that i’m back on, i’ve been have some major problems. I don’t know if its my computer or internet or what but everytime I get on my xanga is not updated. I mean its not showing any of my last weblogs and when it does I try to go read my comments (which says I do) but once I click it it says that I have zero. also when my friend tried to sign on and look at her personal profile it somehow it would go to my personal profile and also shes automatically signed off and my xanga name is up on top. Its crazy! I don’t know what do to. I also tried upgrading to premium. I paid for a month and nothing has changed. email me back and tell me what the hell is going on.

It was on John’s blog some time ago. I voted against tabs…oh well. Anyways, advertisements are one of Xanga’s sources of revenue, so there’s no point blocking ads unless you want Xanga to have less funding for the services it provides. However, being human, I disagree with ads.
Well, this new “feature” will make linking easier, at least. I’ll still stress, though, that Xanga should have pages with valid code, not table-based layouts and other such 1995 A.D. design techniques. There’s simply too much extra code.

Hello, I am sorry to bother you. I was hesitant about asking a question, but I thought maybe I should ask, just in case you or the other xanga team members would approve. Anyway, what I wanted to ask was… on your front page, are you allowed to host anything going to another site, such as OutOfTheShadows.com? It is a site that soon will be updated and spread the foundation held for Epilepsy. Amy Lee is working on it. I have the banner, if maybe you can just put that on your site.. all it is is a picture. And the actual epilepsy website…. http://www.epilepsyfoundation.com. I was hoping we can do more than just on our xangas and other blogs….. that if it was on the front page, that maybe it would spread faster. If not, I guess we will just have to try to spread it all by word of mouth on our xangas and in blogrings. If you can not put this on your front page, I understand completely. Ok this is pissing me off… how come everytime I type “love” on my xanga it turns all different color and into a link?! Like my xanga at the top in big letters it used to say “I love you…” but then it got screwed up & turned all small cuz it turned it into a link! What’s up with that?!
needs more “clean” ads. i hate haveing to look at dating ads, and “sex-related” stuff! please make ads more cleaner, or just drop then at all.
Given that I’ve spent the 100 bucks for the lifetime premium, I appreciate any improvement.
And I find it funny that so many people are pissing and moaning about the ads yet won’t put up the cash for premium.
I don’t know whether all you Xanga users realize this, but running a huge site like Xanga takes lots of this green substance I like to call “money”. And so when you buy premium, you’re covering what Xanga would be receiving from the advertiser.
So really, there’s no reason to criticize Xanga. I don’t find the ads all that obtrusive when visiting the pages of other in the first place. Try going on MySpace half an hour and Xanga will feel like paradise.

I hate the new ads. They just seem too bulky and take up much too much of the page when you first bring it up. I’d rather have the “bareskeleton” version that extends more across the page if you want more ad space. Also, may I suggest making the three ad layouts a choice under look and feel? Just a suggestion. Something I pulled from my own site designing.

I just want to get this off my chest: the Xanga admin team is horribly inept; empirically, and in comparison to their peers. Consider the competition, they:
* Allow the user to use a third-party, or client side app to create, edit, and manage your entries; no more IE crashes destroying your posts, or any other supernatural occurance between your machine and the Xanga server eating what you wrote. Furthermore, since everything starts on your machine, there is a plethora of archival options so you can have a local copy of your entire journal.
* Offer ownership of the comments you make on others’ sites; if you leave a comment elsewhere, you can edit it and/or delete it.
* Offer multiple, customizable views of your community (or “subscriptions” as they are called here). Livejournal also lets you have multiple protected lists, which means you can protect entries to different circles of friends depending on how personal the post is.
* So far as I can tell, they offer easy access to real people when you need help or have a suggestion to make, instead of an endless web of FAQ referrals; livejournal even has a forum where the admins frequently visit and post responses.
* Update, upgrade, and improve their services/system in a timely and perpetual manner–a brief inquiry into the FAQs or the Xanga “updates” blog reveal that a) there exist tons of requested features that are listed as “coming soon” without having been implemented in the 1.5 years I’ve been here and b) barely useful and elementary changes (ones that should have been part of the original feature set) are made less than monthly; respectively.

What if, on the xanga sites, there was a place to show your “other” sites instead of just showing a link to them on your entries? So, people wouldn’t have to go searching through your entries to find it, but it be conveniently located near the “About Me” section or the “My Interests” thing. It’d sure be cool!

i’m having problems with my xanga. (i dont know if its my web browser). It keeps saying that I’m logged in and won’t let me log out. And it seems like the pages that are displayed when i’m ‘logged in’ are old ones that havn’t been refreshed. So when I press refresh on my browser, it will display the updated pages, and show that i am signed out. BUT… for some reason, when i do sign in, it asks me for my signin info when i’m browsing my friends’ pages. And for one site in particular, it asks me to sign in to view comments, and will repost the previous comment i left (yesterday i think) automatically. It’s really annoying. Can you fix it?

I was wondering if you can help me … I had a protected xanga site (Adastra_Peraspera) a while back, up until Oct. 14 this year. I started it last year in Oct. 2004. Anyway, I accidentally locked myself out of it because I was changing the password. there are five girls on xanga that i have been fighting w/ outside of xanga and it got brought to it.

I know this has nothing to do with your post, but why doesn’t Xanga have the option to assign categories to related posts. I know we have the events and review tabs, but I’d like more. I see alot of people has their old sites shut down… well one of my sites got shut down too its called DarkAmyAngel and its because of Violation and my friend had da same problem too. her site is called VietBunnyChan. everyone wants their site restored asap bcuz they luv it soo much yes me and my friend too. we make layouts for people and help them with their xangas. Now we cant because the sites are now shutdown. We really want to continue or else the whole xanga team will be losing members and then everyone will be at MySpace.TagWorld,Friendster,Hi5,Piczo,GeoCities stuff like dat. PLEASE restore all xangas.BTW alot of members have Premium and wasted their money because its shut down. and some people even think all you guys want is MONEY. PLEASE RESTORE ALL SITES ASAP

I know this is off the topic, but, nobody seems to be answering me in the help section or anywhere else. I’d like to kno why my second site has been shut down. I try to log on and it tell me I havent reached the eligibility requirements. Some people have been talking about being underage. But I kno that isnt an issue because I knew I was fine when I created it.
Now. If at all the site can be resurrected, will all the information from day one be on there?? If no, why not? I will be devastated…

Is there any way we can search within our own blogs for old posts, particularly if you have alot of them and you are searching for a certain one?
It’s also disconcerting to try and access the photoblog… I have to click a certain way before I can access the title menu bar that will have other options when my mouse hovers over my xanga name but i have to click on photomanager to get the photoblog option… is there any way to stream line accessing all these different parts of the xanga?
I also discovered that there was a dash board function and if someone had not given a direct link to it, i would not have been able to access it and now without that link there is no way for to access it from my own account, is it a premium plus feature?
Is there anyway to make private entries older than a certain date automatically? Or see all private posts or all protected posts only for your xanga?
